[Archive of Correspondence, Typescripts, and Manuscripts]

Various (Northampton, MA; Paros, Greece; and elsewhere), (1991-2008). Four (4) typed letters signed (TLS), twelve (12) autograph letters signed (ALS), and eight (8) signed autograph postcards, from poet Jack Gilbert, all addressed to friend Mike Edwards. Some 7000+ words in total. WITH: Eleven (11) original typescript draft poems (both laser-printed and typewriter) and one (1) holograph poem. ALSO INCLUDES: 34 draft poems photomechanically reproduced from Gilbert's holograph and typescript (for use in workshop setting, see details below), as well as complete photomechanically-reproduced copies (from Gilbert's original typescripts) of his final two books: REFUSING HEAVEN and THE DANCE MOST OF ALL, the latter INSCRIBED to Edwards by Gilbert in his late hand. Generally near fine or better overall. An intimate nearly two-decade-long archive of correspondence and related materials from poet Jack Gilbert to his friend Mike Edwards. The archive is composed of four parts: photomechanically reproduced poems from Gilbert's original holograph and typescript (created for use in the writing group); original holograph and typescript drafts of GilbertÂ’s poems (given to Edwards directly and conveyed via mail); original correspondence (both typed and autograph letters as well as postcards); and copies (from his original typescript) of Gilbert's final two books: REFUSING HEAVEN and THE DANCE MOST OF ALL. The archive begins with the poems reproduced for workshop use. There are some 34 in total, of which at least 12 are by our reckoning unpublished, with at least another ten representing drafts differing substantially from their final versions. Only seven examples are largely or entirely as published. Though undated these workshop poems date ca. 1991-96 and provide a valuable window into GilbertÂ’s compositional methods, as well as offering significant unpublished materials for study. 11 original typescript poems are also present, as is one entirely in GilbertÂ’s holograph. Again, at least two are unpublished, with most of the others representing drafts, usually with substantive changes when compared again the final published versions. Most of these originals are later, ca. 1998-2000. In all, 45 draft poems, at least 15 apparently unpublished, with fewer than a dozen as (or largely as) published and most demonstrating substations revisions. Though Gilbert was often known for prickliness and distance, these letters bely that reputation. They find him entirely warm, open, and generous. Gilbert offers comments on EdwardsÂ’ poems and on several occasions encloses poems of his own (see above). He variously discusses his own ideas about poetry, his travel plans, his youth, health, publishing, relationships, the deaths of friends and family, and numerous other topics. The letters reveal a tender relationship, one clearly born of trust and mutual admiration, and a voice that is the same as that of the poems: utterly sincere and unembarrassed. The correspondence ends in 2002, but the friendship continued, as the presence of copies of Gilbert's final two book attests. These typescripts, like the individual draft poems previously discussed, show substantial variation from their final published forms. The typescript for REFUSING HEAVEN demonstrates perhaps the most significant revisions between the draft included and the ultimate version. First and most obviously, the order of the poems in the book is radically different. More than that, however, many of the poems themselves differ from their final forms: several title changes and numerous edits (both large and small) are evident throughout. In addition, several poems originally slotted for REFUSING HEAVEN were removed between this version and the final, only to be included later in THE DANCE MOST OF ALL. And most importantly, one poem exists in two drafts, both of which differ from the final, and another two poems were cut from the published edition that apparently remain unpublished. THE DANCE MOST OF ALL typescript differs most significantly in the order of the poems, while the poems themselves show fewer changes than the previous typescript for REFUSING HEAVEN. Nonetheless, numerous smaller edits are evident throughout, and the presence of GilbertÂ’s inscription at a time when he was signing very few books lends this final piece of the archive an undeniable poignancy. In his shunning of public attention, infrequent appearances and interviews, slender and careful output, regular self-imposed exile, and unique mix of both popular acclaim and peer respect, GilbertÂ’s career resembled less those of his contemporaries and more the careers of beloved poetic figures like T.S. Eliot and Elizabeth Bishop. Indeed, at the time of his death, Gilbert was one of the most widely-read and influential of American poets, a combination that gave him an almost singular stature. A detailed, descriptive inventory of the archive is available on request, as are additional images. More than 200 printed pages in total, this collection represents a long-lived correspondence with a major American poet during what was arguably his most fertile period, one rich in personal and biographical detail. It offers a rare window into both GilbertÂ’s working methods and creative process, as well as containing a significant trove of unpublished material. An archive worthy of prominent institutional placement, with a scope and depth that has clear potential for original scholarship.

CYCLE OF THE DAY, A BOOK OF HOURS |THE

N.P.: The Press at Colorado College, 1991. 8 loose singature and a colophon section folded in three and loosely inserted in a clamshell box. Press at Colorado College. oblong 4to. 8 loose singature and a colophon section folded in three and loosely inserted in a clamshell box. Unpaginated. Limited to 50 numbered copies.Illustrations, designs and diagrams. Color plates printed letterpress, a few hand-done inclusions and hot-stamped foil. Bird drawings are from photographs, altered by James Trissel. This contemporary Book of Hours was influenced by the Rule of St. Benedict and other Books of Hours printed from 1460-1800. The materials chosen for this Book are those of the designer and printer tempered with advice from friends. Each Book of Hours is an invention; no two are alike. The opening diagrams and schemes are obvious references to the daily cycle. The emphasis upon the Psalms is traditional and meant to be ecumenical, "The color printing of the central panel of each section is entirely consistent with elements found in manuscript paintings of the hours." - Colophon. This great production by the late James Trissel is a tour de force, with both printing and illustrations of fine quality. Slight bump to top right-hand corner of box, else fine.

Billesberger, Mosinning/München 1992, Kat. Nr. 24; Süddeutscher Privatbesitz. Literatur: Ausst. Katalog: A. Stolzenburg: Der Landschafts- und Genremaler Franz Ludwig Catel (1778-1856), Rom, Casa di Goethe, 2007, S. 16 (hier wird unsere Zeichnung erwähnt), Anmerkungen 38.. Am 28.01.1801 heiratete Catel in Berlin Sophie Frederike Kolbe, Schwester des Berliner Malers C.W. Kolbe d.J. (1781-1853).

Archive of Leaflets and Flyers Documenting Early 90s Throbbing Gristle / Psychic TV Rave Events

(n.p.): [self published] 1991 -1994 - A collection of 35 pieces of promotional ephemera from the early California Rave scene. Genesis Breyer P-Orridge is best known as the godfather of industrial music; a genre created in U.K. during the mid-seventies, marked by an aggressive blend of hard rock and electronic music. The sound can be traced back to the Velvet Underground and electronic pioneers like Kraftwerk and would later spawn groups like Trent Reznor's Nine Inch Nails. Relocating to California in the early 90s, P-Orridge aligned himself with neo-psychedelic thinkers like Terence McKenna and the cyber-prophets at MONDO 2000. With those collaborators, Breyer P-Orridge helped founder what would become Rave Culture with 'Hyperdelic" happenings held at industrial locations in and around San Francisco. The cultural relevance of this movement cannot be over-exaggerated. In addition to the flyers is a letter from P-Orridge: "dearest Mike, / Here is the first loan repayment. / Hopefully, will get thee / rest to you early Sept. / Also thee loose / flyers are all from / England prior to our leaving. / For your box. / Also Flyers in brown / padded envelope etc / are for your stash. / L-ov-E / Genesis." Fine on printed multi-colored advertising card.

Travelling or NeoPostModrinPreMortemism or Dieser Rasen ist kein Hundeklo (II) or Interminable Gabberjabb Number Seven

Mt. Horeb, WI: The Perishable Press. 1991-1996. One of 125 copies on various papers (hand, mould and machine-made) numbered at least 19 times and signed at least 10, employing an "unthinkable number" of typefaces, ink colors, and press runs. With "Front Matter" as follows: "1. Just about all books start out from an idea. 2. Everything in the world is waiting to become a book. 3. Before ideas can be read they need to become words..." Page size: 10-1/4 x 7-1/4 inches (164cm x 184cm), 154 pages. Bound by the printer/publisher: old paper maps over boards (no two alike), variegated cloth spine, new. Pages are printed, collaged, rubber stamped, drilled, notched, pigment patterned, (ticket) punched, grommeted, scribed, ear tattooed, drawn, camouflaged or time clocked. The critic, Mary Lydon tells us that this No. 7 GABBERJABB also involves, "...iconoclasm/craft, art/daily life and sophistication grounded in physiology and earthiness...a reflective vehicle in its ability to break and intersect narrative lines, play with syntax, integrate found materials, convey enigma, paradox and information all at once." Walter Hamady, noted artist, printer and publisher, has been making books since 1964; the current list totals 131. In a 1991 article for "Visible Language" by Mary Lydon, "The Book as the Trojan Horse of Art. Walter Hamady, The Perishable Press Limited", the author elucidates Hamady's theory that "literacy blinds us...to the 'bookform' itself..." In order to become a purveyor of information "the picture plane" disappears from view in favor of its sole "content." Hamady is quoted, "[T]he book is perhaps the most personal form an artist can deal with. It encompasses a multiple and sequential picture plane, it is tactile, and to be understood it must be handled by the viewer, who then becomes a participant...The book as a structure is the Trojan horse of art - it is not feared by average people." The Gabberjabbs are particularly fine examples of Hamady's theory. The reader is obliged to read and re-read letters jammed together, bookmaking and the book form itself. Compared to Kurt Schwitters, Duchamp and Joseph Cornell, Hamady has been a major influence on at least one generation of book artists. He is the recipient of numerous grants and awards and one-man and group exhibitions. He has been the subject of many articles, and his works are in most of this country's important rare book libraries, i.e. the Houghton, Yale, Getty Center, Newberry, Walker Art Center, Cleveland Institute of Art, as well as outside the U.S.: Bodleian Library, British Library, Klingspor Museum, Lenin Library, Royal Library Stockholm, Victoria & Albert, etc. This GABBERJABB is from one of this country's most important artists -- at the top of his game.         Collected Ukiyo-e 1: Harunobu [Meihin Soroemono Ukiyo-e 1: Harunobu]

[Tokyo]: Gyousei, 1991 [Tokyo]: Gyousei, 1991. First edition. Sumptuous exhibition of numerous Harunobu Suzuki ukiyo-e prints, in color, and others in black and white, with text in Japanese. Folio, 14 1/2" x 10 1/2"; olive cloth; glossy pictorial jacket, slipcase. Book, jacket and slipcase all in fine, as new condition. An extraordinarily scarce and beautiful reference on master ukiyo-e printmaker Harunobu Suzuki (about 1724/25 to 1770), assembled and described by three of the world's most learned authorities on the subject: Muneshige Narazaki, Juzo Suzuki, and Tadashi Kobayashi. Clearly designed as a collectible form, this Gyousei offering was printed for only a short time, only in Japan, and only in Japanese. 98 Harunobu prints are reproduced full-color, full-page, and full sized; the unusual dimensions chosen for these oversized pages allowed reproduction of the prints at their actual size. That dazzling display is accompanied by critical commentary in Japanese and many more prints and illustrations in black and white. This volume is part of a series by this trio of experts, who combed the museums of Japan and the world to find the best preserved examples of the best work of each of the master ukiyo-e masters. Hard to imagine an better-preserved example of this beautifully constructed art reference collectible than this one; even the slip-case, which by its nature generally absorbs something of a beating, has only the minutest flaws. The book, jacket and contents are flawless. L49

        Interbeing

Santa Ynez, California:: Pamela Zwehl-Burke,, 1991.. Edition of 5. 8 x 11.25"; 11 pages. Horizontal concertina. 11 zinc etchings, printed, scraped, drawn, and printed from a single plate. Collagraph illustrated cover. Housed in plexiglass slipcase that sits in a detachable plexiglas stand. Etchings — flowers and vegetation — suggest the teem of interconnected life. Pamela Zwehl-Burke: "From one zinc plate, drawn, etched, printed, burnished and drawn again, a sequence describing the cycle, the interdependence of the rose and the compost (garbage). I study Buddhism daily; I was deeply moved by Thich Naht Hanh's use of the term 'interbeing,' used to explain the continual interface among all things. In this case, the stuff that supports and becomes what we so prize comes from and becomes the humble, nourishing, ground of being. The back cover is a direct print from inked stems and thorns and rose leaves."

        Swimming

New York: Library Fellows of the Whitney Museum of Art, 1991. ONLY EDITION. Edition limited to 175 copies. Commissioned by the Whitney Museum of Art, the colophone is signed "Tina Barney & Tina Howe" in pencil on the colophon page. Nine original chromogenic prints in a quarter-leather binding, 13 x 17 in. (33.0 x 43.0 cm), presented in a cloth portfolio case. Includes a previously unpublished play by Tina Howe. Preserved in an protective chemise Tina Barney (born 1945, New York City) is an American photographer, born into a wealthy, upper class New York family. Her grandfather introduced her to photography when she was a young girl, and Barney began collecting photographs at the age of 26. It was not until the mid-1970's that Barney personally started working with photography. Initially, as a bored housewife living a life of leisure, Barney focused on candid snapshots of her well-to-do family and relatives set amongst an array of lavishly decorated backdrops, including classy New York apartments and plush New England vacation homes. With a 35mm camera she was able to reveal both the familial relationships and sheer extravagance of material wealth she was accustomed to. During the 1980's, Barney became one of the first photographers to work in the ?"directional style?" when she forfeited the spontaneous freedom of the 35mm for a more detail-oriented, large-format camera. The direction she uses in her photography ranges from posing her subjects amidst their elaborately ornate living environment to requesting that her subjects repeat a certain unplanned gesture. Barney's photography, with its mundane subject matter and stiffly posed subjects, recalls works of 19th century portraiture in which every detail included alludes to the social status of the individual being portrayed. This notion becomes clear in works such as Jill & Polly in the Bathroom (1987) and The Daughters (2002), in which the background possesses the same intricacy and significance as the subjects themselves. In her later work, Barney favors personality over context, successfully establishing a more intimate connection between viewer and subject by bringing her camera closer into their lives. For example, in Marina and Peter (1997), father and daughter are shown sharing a private moment, but at the same time acknowledge the presence of the photographer. Here Barney revives the individualism and spontaneity of a snapshot by allowing her sitters to choose their own poses instead of giving direction. According to Barney, ?"when people say that there is a distance, a stiffness in my photographs, that the people look like they do not connect, my answer is, that this is the best that we can do. This inability to show physical affection is in our heritage.?" (The Art Institute of Chicago) For almost thirty years, Tina Barney has realistically showcased the human condition through the eyes of the social elite, and has been described as a Diane Arbus of the rich. Barney currently lives and works in Rhode Island. The last copy that appeared at auction was at Swann Galleries (Photographic Literature, May 22, 2007, lot 485A) which realized $6,720
