London: Privately Printed, 1991. Limited to 35 numbered copies and 7 proof copies, this number 25. Very rare (2 copies only, one in The British Library and the other at The Royal Academy of Music, ex libris Yehudi Menuhin). The Five Songs were commissioned by the BBC for the 1988-89 Winter Season and first performed at the Royal Festival Hall on April 23, 1989 by Elizabeth Laurence and the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Lothar Zagrosek. The songs " show [Elias] in command of a technique able to clothe words in emotionally descriptive music that places the work alongside the great orchestral song cycles of the past." Susan Bradshaw in Grove Music Online. Elias was educated at the Royal College of Music, where he studied with Searle, Bernhard Stevens, and privately with Elisabeth Lutyens. For a time he earned his living as a statistician in New York and London. In 1979 he resumed a full-time career as a composer and freelance teacher. The artist, Andres Vogt, was born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1945. His artwork is held in collections in the United States, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Israel. For her incendiary poems and political activism, Ratushinskaya was arrested by the KGB and sentenced to seven years' hard labor in 1983. In 1986, on the eve of the Reykjavik summit between President Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachov, she was released. The poems in this collection were written between 1978 and 1982.. Elephant folio.         Or the Nomocanon of Saint Sava. The Ilovica Manuscript from 1262. Photoprint reproduction. Edited and appendices written by Decje Novine.

- Sehr gut erhalten.         24 Nights / Twenty Four Nights. The Music of Eric Clapton. The Drawings of Peter Blake.

Guildford: Genesis Publications, 1991., 1991. LIMITED EDITION, SIGNED by Eric Clapton and Peter Blake. Slim Quarto. Colour plates and illustrations. Book and scrapbook, with additional material. Original green morocco boards, gilt edges, together with a laminated stage pass, guitar picks, and a pack of guitar strings, plus limited double CD '24 Nights', the whole contained in custom-made clamshell box with card tray. A fine production, as expected from Genesis, the pioneers of high quality art-rock publications. 24 Nights is a unique collaboration between Eric Clapton, Peter Blake and Derek Taylor. Issued to commemorate Eric Clapton's record 24-night performance at the Royal Albert Hall in 1991. Peter Blake's scrapbook is a collection of pencil sketches, charcoal drawings and montages showing Eric and the band during rehearsals and performances. Blake was the Associate Artist of the National Gallery and is probably best known for his graphic cover of The Beatles' 'Sergeant Pepper' album cover. A vast selection of original memorabilia from the concert tour including back stage passes, hotel room lists, polaroid photographs, seating plans, set lists, laminates and sheet music are reproduced in the scrapbook, many of them tip-ins pasted in by hand. The scrapbook is accompanied by a commentary book by Derek Taylor. Taylor attended rehearsals in Dublin, performances at the Royal Albert Hall and the after-show party. His account provides a unique insight into the backstage and on-the-road world of Eric Clapton and his band. A former publicist for the Beatles' Apple Corps (as well as the Mamas and Papas, The Beach Boys and The Byrds), Taylor was one of the most influential music industry professionals of the time. His commentary offers the reader a rare opportunity to experience an insider's perspective on the man who is universally recognised as the world's greatest blues guitarist, labelled 'God' during his time with John Mayall, Cream, and Blind Faith in the mid to late sixties. Fine throughout, with a couple of tiny marks to box. A very early pop title from Genesis, who have published well in excess of 50 music books; preceeded only by I Me Mine (1980), Fifty Years Adrift (1984), Twenty Years Ago Today (1987), Songs by George Harrison (1987) and Blinds and Shutters (1990).

Thirty-Three Sonnets of Guido Cavalcanti

The Arion Press, San Francisco 1991 - Limited edition of 150 copies (plus 26 NFS), this no. 137, WITH AN ETCHING IN COLOUR SIGNED BY THE ARTIST, Joseph Goldyne. Guido Cavalcanti (ca. 1255-1300) was the first major poet of Italian literature and an influence on Dante, who called Cavalcanti "mentor". His influence extended to Dante Gabriel Rossetti, whom the young Ezra Pound admired. Pound published his own translations of Cavalcanti as early as 1912, and this volume pairs a selection of those sonnets with a colour etching by Joseph Goldyne (b. 1942), who first achieved prominence in 1973 with a solo exhibit in San Francisco. Throughout his career he had focused on creating unique works, not items meant to be released in editions; since 1985 he has created a number of livres d'artiste, working with printers and designers such as Andrew Hoyem of the Arion Press, of which this book is one (N.B., artist info from the web site of The Annex Galleries). ***DESCRIPTION: Quarter bound in tan leather with gilt lettering over boards covered in olive green silk, fore- and bottom edges uncut, ivory endpapers, title page in red and black, colour etching by Joseph Goldyne bound in following the introductory essays entitled "Messagger del core", etching signed by the artist in pencil, each poem has its initial capital in red; type Centaur roman and Arrighi italic, paper handmade Umbria from the Fabriano Mill of Italy, folio size (approximately 13.25" tall), unpaginated with 42 printed leaves; limited edition of 176 copies total, this no. 137. ***CONDITION: Fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings - crisp, as new. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the Abe standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
