Gould, Steven Jay
New York and London: W. W. Norton & Company, 1981 First edition, first printing of one of Gould's most famous and controversial books. Here he analyses craniometry and IQ testing to point out the unconscious biases and a priori assumptions built into much "scientific" research. Researchers recently made the case that Gould was incorrect about one aspect of the book's argument, it still stands as an important indictment of biological determinism and a lucid reminder that those engaged in research of any type must be aware of their own privilege and biases. A superb copy, rare to find this book. This book is an excellent and crisp copy.

Carranco, Lynwood and Beard, Estle
Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1981. 1st. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo. x, 403 pp. Bibliography. Photo-illustrations. A fine copy in fine dustjacket of this relatively scarce book. After an accusation of plagiarism (determined to be "unintentional," but nonetheless damning) was brought forward by Virginia P. Miller, a former student of Estle Beard, in 1985, the book was immediately withdrawn by University of Oklahoma Press and has not been re-printed. Here is the history of one of the darkest chapters in California history - the literal genocide ("a war of extermination" as the first governor of California, Peter Hardeman Burnett, enthusiastically phrased it in 1851) of Native Americans by European Americans in Round Valley, CA, in Mendocino County. The first six chapters present the history of the Yolla Bolly country up to 1865, describing the region, the culture of the Yuki and their neighbors, and the depredations of the white settlers. The second part of the book, covering the years from 1865 to 1905, describes the lives and fortunes of the victorious white settlers.
