Luigi Serafini
Franco Maria Ricci, Milano, 1981.

Kodansha, 1981. First Edition. Hardcover. Quarto, 221pp., illustrated. A nice, clean, square copy, very good, with some foxing to the first and last couple of leaves. Internally bright and clean. SIGNED by Nakashima on the front free endpaper, and dated in the year of publication. Price-clipped dust jacket is near fine, perhaps a bit sunned on the front panel, and with an old sticker at the bottom of hte front flap. Also includes an interesting blueprint, which folds out to show several designs for chairs, uncluding multiple views and Nakashima's ideas behind the designs. We have not found any similar blueprints on cursory internet searches, but find it to be a compelling companion to this excellent book. The blueprint is stapled to a leaf of green cardstock. Very good / near fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

DICK, Philip K. (1928-1992)
New York: Bantam Books, 1981. 8vo. 204pp. Lacking one leaf (pp.101-2), possibly from the time of binding. Original green printed wrappers, green linen backstrip, publication date of January 1, 1981 changed in manuscript to February. Item #401190 Scarce proof of Dick's 'Valis', of which only a small number were prepared (by one account only 19 copies), none of which were sent to reviewers. The leaf adjacent to the lacking leaf is slightly extended from the block and discolored along the fore-edge. Although it is possible that these two leaves were at one point sprung, the tightness of the binding and lack of an obvious gap at the gutter suggest the binding error may have been present from the start. Laid-in is Bantam's "Brief Description" for the book, mimeographed typescript, 4to, three paragraphs. [Attributes: First Edition]

GOCHO, Shigeo
Japan. Self Published.1981. Japan Self Published 1981, 1981. First edition, limited to 500 copies. Unpaginated. 47 colour plates. Black cloth with title and author stamped in English in silver on upper board and in Japanese on the spine. White card slip-case with a photograph on its front and the title and author printed in black in English and Japanese. Slip-case is protected by a plastic wrapper. Both book and case are in fine condition. The photographs in this, the last of Gocho's three published works were taken between April 1978 and October 1980. As with his other work, there is a sense of Gocho's detachment from the world around him, born in part perhaps from his own difficult circumstances. He was born in 1946 with a rare degenerative illness which prevented him from growing to full adult height; he was only four feet tall. Furthermore Gocho knew from an early age that he would not live beyond middle age; he died in 1983. "Shigeo Gocho's final series, Familiar Street Scenes, marks a significant departure from the style of portraits for which he had become known. He used color film for the first time and sought out fleeting formal patterns in the bustle and flow of the streets of downtown Tokyo while moving closer to his subjects, which he then presented in larger, bold prints. The diminished distance between the photographer and his subjects leads to a more confrontational relationship. Though some return his gaze, their expressions convey an admonishment rather than a shared acceptance". (Catalogue of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston)

Quigley, Carroll
Books in Focus New York 1981 First Edition 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Hardcover Good 354 pages. Index. Footnotes. "On very rare occasions a book appears which forever changes the way in which we perceive the world around us. Within a short while it becomes hard to understand how we could have functioned without the knowledge gained from it. This is such a book. Quigley presents certain 'keys' crucial to the understanding of 20th century political, economic and military events - events of the past, present, and future... The fact that Carroll Quigley, a highly respected professor at Georgetown University and an instructor at Princeton and Harvard, could not find a publisher for this work, is in itself significant." - Stephen A. Zarlenga, Publisher. Light wear to book which is clean and unmarked but for prior owner's neat signature atop front free endpaper. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1981. Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume V, Part 1, The Exchequer Years, 1922-1929 Martin Gilbert Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1981 First U.S. edition, in dust jacket Condition: Fine Jacket Condition: Very Good This is the U.S. first edition of Companion Volume V, Part 1 of the Official Biography of Sir Winston Churchill. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and numerous accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were originally published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. The Companion volumes for Volume V of the Official Biography are perhaps the most keenly sought and most prohibitive to acquire of all Official Biography volumes. The British and U.S. first editions saw just a single printing and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes - meaning that many first edition Official Biography sets will forever do without. The British first editions were bound in solid red cloth. The U.S. editions were published using British sheets, but more elaborately bound, with tan linen spines over blue buckram boards with blue spine title panels printed in red and gilt. The bindings also feature head and foot bands and vertical red transition rules between the tan linen and blue buckram. This U.S. first edition of Companion Vo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume V, Part 2, The Wilderness Years, 1929-1935 Martin Gilbert London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1981 First British edition, in dust jacket Condition: Fine Jacket Condition: Fine The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - nineteen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. The Companion volumes for Volume V of the Official Biography are the most keenly sought and most prohibitive to acquire of all Official Biography volumes. There was only a single printing in England and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes - meaning that many Official Biography sets will forever do without. This is the second of the three Volume V Companions, a superlative copy of the British first edition, only printing. Condition is truly fine in a fine dust jacket. This is about as good as they come; the book appears unread. The red cloth binding is clean, tight, and square, showing virtually no wear and retaining a nicely rounded spine, sharp corners, and bright spine gilt. The contents are pristine. There is no sign of the looseness or gutter breaks that so often occur with this massive volume. There is no spotting and no previous ownership marks. The r … [Click Below for Full Description]

Volume 2 1950-1954 - During this time, he received the commission for Chandigarh, began working on projects for two villas and the Millowners' Building at Ahmedabad. The sketchbooks demonstrate how he converted new experiences into unique and very personal designs. They also record his bitter disappointment at being excluded from work on the United Nations building in New York. They also document the years when he transformed his strict, glass-and-metal International Style into aggressively sculptural forms. Here are the initial drawings for the Unité d'habitation at Marseille and the chapel at Ronchamp. 1981. Condition: Very Good. Very good condition. Front and back covers are in excellent shape. No marks, writing or underling inside the report itself. Some light fading along the top left of the front cover and along the spine of the cover. Are you a huge Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger fan? If you are, this report is like a delightful walk down memory lane. This listing is for a super rare 1981 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Report. As has often been said, these Berkshire Hathaway annual reports, including the Chairman's Letter written by Warren Buffett, are pure solid gold loaded with investing wisdom. This 1981 annual report was the first year that the return address on the back cover changed from 97 Cove Street, New Bedford, Massachusetts, 02744, to 1440 Kiewit Plaza, Omaha, Nebraska, 68131. This copy is used but in very good condition. The front and back covers are in great shape. Inside the report is totally clean with no underlinings, marks or writing on it. No bends and staples are solid! The only flaw is some light fading on the top left part of the front and back cover and a small amount along the spine of the cover. 56 total pages, which also includes the 1981 annual report letters from Charlie Munger for Blue Chips Stamps (read up on See's Candies, Buffalo Evening News, Precision Steel and Pinkerton's!) and Louis Vincenti for Wesco Financial. Makes an incredible addition to your Berkshire annual report collection. It probably goes without saying, but I only have this one '81 Berkshire annual report, so when it's gone, it's gone forever. That's it. In fact, to give … [Click Below for Full Description]
