        Valis

New York: Bantam Books, 1981. Uncorrected page proofs. 8vo. 204pp. Lacking one leaf (pp.101-2), possibly from the time of binding. Original green printed wrappers, green linen backstrip, publication date of January 1, 1981 changed in manuscript to February. Scarce proof of Dick's 'Valis', of which only a small number were prepared (by one account only 19 copies), none of which were sent to reviewers. The leaf adjacent to the lacking leaf is slightly extended from the block and discolored along the fore-edge. Although it is possible that these two leaves were at one point sprung, the tightness of the binding and lack of an obvious gap at the gutter suggest the binding error may have been present from the start. Laid-in is Bantam's "Brief Description" for the book, mimeographed typescript, 4to, three paragraphs.

        Two Old Men

Gwasg Gregynog, Newton, Powys 1981 - 27x18cm, 80pp. With 26 linocuts by Kyffin Williams printed in black directly from the blocks. Copy 115 of 260 (277) bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in quarter-black goatskin over grey buckram-covered boards, stamped 'Sangorski & Sutcliffe' on the f.f.e.p. verso, white buckram inset on front cover with linocut printed in black, gilt title to spine. An early Gwasg Gregynog title and always one of the most sought-after, thanks principally to the vigorous Kyffin Williams linocuts printed directly from the blocks. A substantial (and surprisingly heavy) book, with a very high-quality binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe (only copies 1 - 132 were thus bound, the remainder of the edition being bound either by James Brockman or at Gregynog to a very similar design). Only the S&S copies were issued with a slipcase, but this copy (like several we have seen) is without it - it was a very thin plain card construction and we can only assume that many have been discarded over the years due to their insubstantial nature. Fine (Esslemont & Hughes 5). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

WARRIOR OF MARS: THE CITY OF THE BEAST, LORD OF THE SPIDERS, MASTERS OF THE PIT Pristine Signed Copy

New English Library, UK 1981 - NEL, UK. 1981. Immaculate copy of the rare first hardcover/omnibus edition of the author's early Mars novels. Flawless sharp boards, a spotless spine that oozes perfection, clean, unread pages, a pristine dustjacket and even a mint copy of the NEL promotional band around the book's waist advertising the "legendary trilogy". Published in the days when I lived in Westminster and one could cut through Downing Street unhindered en route from St James's Park to Whitehall and via Trafalgar Square on to glorious Soho, there to meet other layabouts willing to explore the joys of ennui. In those days the ICA, Nash House was graced by the presence of James Blish during sf debates, Scotland Yard had not yet relocated to Victoria Street and many bent Old Bill ruffians from West End Central were still working overtime planting dope on innocent Piccadilly pissoir patrons. May the rotters drown in hell's foulest smelling urine fountain. The book is AS NEW and SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. A rare treasure. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Produced in India on very heavy handmade stock, and bound by hand. The copies distributed in the UK had a laid in sheet (not present here), with the publisher's explanation of the 'used' appearance of copies due to the nature of the materials and production. "In 1976 and 1977, Clemente spent time at Madras’s Theosophical Society, where he delved into its library of religious and spiritual texts. His interest in Hindu spiritual life and in other non- European cultures was combined with an enthusiasm for local popular culture and crafts. Clemente began collaborating with Indian sign painters, miniaturists, and papermakers, as in Francesco Clemente Pinxit, a 1980–81 series of miniatures in gouache on handmade paper, for which young miniaturists from Jaipur and Orissa painted the decorative elements" - Guggenheim Online.

1981 - "HICKS, John R. Collected Essays on Economic Theory. Wealth and Welfare. WITH: Money, Interest and Wages. WITH: Classics and Moderns. Cambridge, Massachusetts: Harvard University, (1981). Octavo, original blue, green, and red cloth and paper boards, original dust jacket. $1500.First edition of this collection of essays on money and growth, including two previously unpublished essays. This three-volume series comprises Hicks' most important theoretical papers. It covers topics such as price and income; welfare economics; monetary theory; the differences between Hicks and Keynes; Hicks' views on earlier economists; mathematical economics; and trade. "One of the most important and influential economists of the 20th century, the trail of the eternally eclectic John Hicks is found all over economic theory The quintessential 'economist's economist,' Hicks cannot be said to have founded a 'school If any, his school was 'economics Hicks' scholarly output is a perfect demonstration of how economics should be done: without partisanship for pet theories, without ideological quibbling, his own strictest critic, learning from all and everywhere, constantly searching for new ideas and staying glued to none No economist, before or since Hicks, has achieved such 'Olympian' scholarship" (Fonseca). "Hicks will probably appear in the history of economics as the greatest British theorist of the century" (Niehans, 371). Hicks was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics in 1972. The essays in these volumes were previously published in a variety of journals and books. Fine condition." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
