        Poster signed. Aspens. Camera

1981. Signed. ADAMS, Ansel. Poster signed. Aspens. Camera. Boston: New York Graphic Society, 1981. Large photographic poster (image measures 19 by 23-1/2 inches), printed caption below image, signature on recto, framed (total measures 26 by 36-inches). $5000.Large 1981 poster boldly signed by Ansel Adams, featuring an exceptionally fine image of his soaring Aspens, Northern New Mexico, 1958—""an Adams masterpiece""—one of the first in a select grouping to feature an image personally chosen by Ansel for a poster to replicate ""as closely as possible the quality of his originalsÂ… Adams supervised the first print runs; the posters were so good that he chuckled that the one of Aspens in particular looked better than a print made in the darkroom""(Alinder), issued to commemorate his photobook, The Camera, a splendid framed exhibition-size poster, scarce signed.Near the end of his life, Ansel Adams ""decided to produce a series of posters replicating as closely as possible the quality of his originals. Ansel chose three images to begin with—Moonrise, Clearing Winter Storm, and Aspens (vertical)—and made extra-large prints of each so that they could be directly laser-scanned with no enlargement. Each poster was designed to highlight a recent book. Ansel's favorite printer, David Gardner of Gardner Lithograph, made superb duotone reproductions on heavy coated stock, and the combination of laser-scanning and exquisite printing resulted in an image with a huge range of clearly defined tonesÂ… Ansel supervised the first press runs; the posters were so good that he chuckled that the one of Aspens in particular looked better than a print made in the darkroom."" This scarce exhibition-size signed poster, with its soaring image of Aspens, Northern New Mexico, 1958—""an Adams masterpiece""—is within that select first group, and highlights his photobook, The Camera. To famed MoMA director of photography, John Szarkowski, these landscapes by Adams ""are his greatest picturesÂ… where his most original, most intense work has been done. Ultimately that's going to be how we remember him"" (Alinder, 337-8, 305, 313). ""Adams photographed landscapes with razor-sharp precision and an incomparable eyeÂ… He elevated the act of photography to a religious experience"" (Icons of Photography, 96). Precedes the limited series of 350 signed photolithographs. Poster designed by Steven Harvard; printed by Gardner/Fulmer. With printed copyright of the Trustees of the Ansel Adams Published Trust at lower edge. A fine signed print, handsomely framed.

        Tottel's -- 10 issues, including numbers 1-5, 10, 12, 14, 15 and 18

Oakland, CA / San Francisco, CA: Ron Silliman, 1981. First edition. Paperback. Near Fine. Collection of 10 issues of this scarce journal that was edited by Ron Silliman and featured many of the L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poets. Includes the first 5 issues, plus numbers 10, 12, 14, 15 and 18. Each copy stapled in the top corner, text on one side only. Near Fine to Fine copies, only a few with minor shelfwear; clean and bright contents; issues 1 and 3 each with 2 soft horizontal folds. According to Silliman, the earlier issues were done in a run of only 50 copies, and the later ones just 150. Only 18 were ever produced, so this run includes over half of the entire output. The first 5 issues which we have here are extremely scarce. Tottel's started as 'a newsletter among friends.' The first issue had only 5 pages, but other issues expanded to twice or three times that size. Most issues included a range of poets, but single author issues for Ray DiPalma, Rae Armantrout and Robert Grenier, among others, were also produced. The first issue predates the famous 'L=a=n=g=u=a=g=e' journal by 8 years and Tottel's in considered to be the first Language poetry journal in print. Contributors include Jerome Rothenberg, Robert Kelly, Robert Grenier, David Melnick, Rae Armantrout, Larry Eigner, Raymond DiPalma, Bruce Andrews, Steve Benson, David Gitin.

        Poster signed. Moonrise. Images 1923-1974

1981. Signed. ADAMS, Ansel. Signed poster for Images 1923-1974. Boston: New York Graphic Society, 1981. Large photographic poster (24 by 36 inches), mounted on foam core. $5000.Striking original poster advertising the republication of AdamsÂ’ Images 1923-1974, signed by him at the bottom.Near the end of his life, Ansel Adams ""decided to produce a series of posters replicating as closely as possible the quality of his originals. Ansel chose three images to begin with—Moonrise, Clearing Winter Storm, and Aspens (vertical)—and made extra-large prints of each so that they could be directly laser-scanned with no enlargement. Ansel's favorite printer, David Gardner of Gardner Lithograph, made superb duotone reproductions on heavy coated stock, and the combination of laser-scanning and exquisite printing resulted in an image with a huge range of clearly defined tonesÂ… Ansel supervised the first press runs"" (Alinder, 337). This scarce exhibibition-size signed poster, with its striking image of Moonrise, is within that select first group, and highlights his photobook, Images 1923-1974 (1974). Often viewed as “the greatest photograph ever made,"" Moonrise was photographed by Adams in 1941 on a road near Hernandez. He released the shutter as “the sun sank below the clouds behind himÂ… The creation of Moonrise was serendipitous: while a painter or sculptor can work from stored memories and imagination, something must happen in the real world in order for a photographer to make a photograph"" (Alinder, 185-191). “The stunning contrast between light and dark, as if we stand in this photograph at the very cusp of dayÂ’s transition into night, captures the emotional feeling that Adams first visualized when he saw the sceneÂ… It represents the essence, he felt, of a changing world” (Sayre, World of Art, 265). “Ansel knew that it was among the very best photographs he had ever made” (Alinder, 193). Light faint foxing to top margin. An impressive signed image.

        Early Years 1900-1927

1981. First Edition . Signed. STEICHEN, Edward. The Early Years 1900-1927. (New York: Aperture, 1981). Large elephant folio (17 by 21 inches), original ivory self-wrappers; pp. 8. WITH: Elephant folio suite of 12 original photogravures. Housed in publisher’s woven-silk portfolio. $7800.Signed limited first edition, number 182 of 1000 copies, signed by photographer Beaumont Newhall and Steichen’s daughter Mary Steichen Calderone on text pages three and five, respectively. Included are Steichen’s “The Flatiron,” “In Memoriam,” Moonrise” and “Heavy Roses.”“In a career that spanned 77 years, Steichen became the country’s most celebrated and highest-priced photographer… a craftsman of genius” (McDarrah & McDarrah, 468). Toward the end of his life Steichen approached Aperture with the idea of publishing his early photographs as hand-pulled photogravures. Intrigued by the project, they enlisted “many years and the talents of many people” to recapture this “exquisite, all-but-forgotten process.” This limited edition of 12 hand-pulled photogravures features some of Steichen’s most memorable images. Perhaps most renowned is his 1905 rendering of New York’s Flatiron Building, a photograph that “is a dramatic representation of that moment at dusk when the sky turns a leaden blue-green and highlights glow in the half-light… There is no clearer example of an early modernist photographic composition, one that combines contemporary Pictorial expression in art… alive with the gestures of living in New York just as it becomes a vital, international metropolis” (Frizot, 318). This edition is one of 500 using photogravures printed on Rives BFK, with the remaining 500 editions printed on Papier Duchene. An additional 100 artist proofs of the suite of 12 photogravures were also produced. With essays by Newhall and Calderone. A fine copy of a splendid volume.

NAMIBIA - THE SUN WILL RISE

MEDU Art Ensemble 1981 - Silkscreen on Paper. Unique. 50.5 x 38 cm. Due to the fact that Thami Mnyele and 13 other cultural workers were murdered in Gabarone , Botswana by the SADF in the early hours of 14 June 1985 in a covert cross-border raid MEDU ceased to exist from this day forward. Their archives and workshops were destroyed and/or confiscated and brought back to South Africa as examples of communist inspired "art treason". As a result very few original posters survive today, in some cases one estimates less than 5 copies. In some cases only 50 or 80 copies were printed which were all made by hand and were usually silkscreened. Illustrated "The rationalism of nationalism?" published by Warren Siebrits, Johannesburg in 2008. pg21 (colour)and is the exact poster used for the exhibition and making of the catalogue. This particular poster is so rare that it did not form part of the collection exhibited at the Johannesburg Art Gallery in 2009. This collection has recently been donated in entirety to Freedom Park, Pretoria, where it remains on permanent display. It is a variation of SWAPO WILL MAKE THE SUN RISE where the text was originally THE SUN WILL RISE. This poster is sold together with "The rationalism of nationalism?".       Oxford: The Roxburghe Club, 1981. Limited Edition. 1/2 Morocco. Very good. Oxford: The Roxburghe Club, 1981. Limited Edition. 1/2 Morocco. "The Boke of Idrography, also known as The Rotz Atlas, was originally presented to Henry VIII around 1542, and it shows the approximate placing of part of Australia as well as charts of the coastlines of the world. This lavish reproduction was produced for The Roxburghe Library by The Viscount Eccles in 1981, being one of only 200 copies for sale, and long out of print. This was the first publication of the Roxburghe Club to be offered for general sale outside the club's very exclusive membership." Jean Rotz, also called Johne Rotz, was a 16th-century French artist-cartographer. His work was greatly influenced by these early French explorations, which induced him to create highly decorative maps. Failing to find employment with King Francois I, Rotz went to England in 1542 and entered the service of Henry VIII.". The Roxburghe Club. Large folio, ½ morocco over cloth, xvi + 96 pages + 32 full color leaves of plates. Limited edition. Top edge gilt. This large folio measures 25 inches by 16 inches. Light surface and edge wear. Faint spotting at lower corner near spine. Very good.

        Archive of Crow and Weasel

1981-1983. Lopez's Crow and Weasel, a fable in the style of North American Indian tales, with beautiful water color illustrations by Tom Pohrt, was published by North Point Press in 1990. This archive predates publication by 7-9 years, and represents a path not taken, documenting the guidance of Lopez, the painstaking work by Pohrt, and the over-arching influence of designer Joel Schick, who amassed this collection during the collaboration, but who did not ultimately serve as the book's designer. According to Lopez, worked stopped on this title in 1983 and began again in 1989, by which time David Bullen had replaced Schick as the designer. Much of the groundwork for the finished product remains visible however, in over 60 pages of text and images, including three signed letters from Lopez to Schick; three copies of letters from Lopez to Pohrt; 6-1/2 (one page missing) letters from Pohrt to Schick; nine retained copies of letters from Schick to Pohrt, Lopez, or both; one retained letter from Schick to Lopez's agent, Peter Schultz; and approximately 15 pages of sketches by Pohrt. Included are meticulously detailed discussions on how to involve the reader; how to anthropomorphize the characters; the characters' motivations at the points of illustration; the overall aesthetic of the book; the smoothing over of the personalities collaborating; etc., all carried out via the primitive means of type, pen, and postal service. As just one example, of Schick writing to Pohrt: "You give up a lot in order to avoid drawing that fore-shortened muzzle and the farther eye. An aspect of composition that we should probably not discuss in front of Barry. Better that our motives always be pure, or at least seem to be, even if misguided...Barry's note about the horse concerned about himself may be handled by facing him away from the action, and toward the edge of the book...Back Cover: No Dead Things!..." Again, when the book was published, in 1990, David Bullen was named as designer. However, included here is a copy of the first edition, (second state, without the gold stamping on the front cover that was removed by request of the second designer, Bullen), inscribed by Lopez to Schick, "with gratitude and affection, and a sense of delight in our long friendship." It's worth noting that Schick was Lopez's designer on his 1979 John Burroughs Medal winning book, Of Wolves and Men. All items fine. First Edition. No Binding. Fine.
