        De Kafka à Kafka

Gallimard. First Edition published only in paperback and for which he was not fired large paper one of the review copies. Touching and valuable autograph dedication signed by the author to his sister Marguerite glued on a card on the first guard: "Dear Marg, this book is not a book but if you put it in those dark days, my faithful, my deep affection. Maurice. " Envelope bearing the address of Marguerite Blanchot written by his brother Maurice glued on half-title page. Marguerite Blanchot, renowned organist Chalon Cathedral, remained all his life in the family home with his mother and aunt. "It will gradually become, for the family, as the memory of origins." Very close to Maurice, she regularly corresponded with the writer who reflects him great recognition for his dedication to their helpless mother. If intense affection Blanchot for his mother and his sister shines in dedications of it, we know almost nothing of their relationship. In the only biographical essay on Blanchot, Christophe Bident reveals, however: "Marguerite Maurice Blanchot worshiped his brother very proud of him, (...) it attached great importance to his political ideas (...) She read a lot (.... .) They phoned corresponded. A distance, they shared the same natural authority, the same concern for discretion. " Blanchot address him indeed many books from his library, now with her continuous intellectual link. A trace of marginal fold in the first flat foot. Nice copy. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! Gallimard Paris 1981 11x18cm broché

        Pictures from the New World

1st Edition Millertown, NY: Aperture, 1981. FIRST TRADE EDITION, DANNY LYON'S OWN ANNOTATED COPY. ?This copy, Lyon's own, was sent to the former executive editor of Camera Arts, Fred Ritchen. Lyon's enclosed letter states, "I've marked some pages which I think makes a good progression over the years, showing a change in subject and style... For the most part I have also marked pictures that are less well known, and often have only appeared in print in this book. Nothing was run by any magazines when the hard back was printed... P.S. I'll need this particular copy back when you're done, as it is my own; though I'm sure I can get you another from Aperture" (December 17, 1982). The resultant May 1983 issue of Camera Arts is included, as is a provenance letter by Tom Ridinger, co-founder of Camera Arts, stating this "must be the rarest copy of Danny Lyon's Pictures from the New World."Lyon critiques his most famous subject in this copy, scrawling, "A BAD reproduction of my BEST picture Bike riders" (pg. 30). This copy features around a dozen pages with pencilled layout drawings and instructions, and over a dozen pages marked with Lyon's original paper clips and sticky tabs.Danny Lyon was a twentieth-century photographic luminary who released Pictures from the New World in 1981 on the dynamic work of his past eighteen years. In the introduction he writes, "In order to to make this book I have had to face directly everything I have done in photography... Now I give it back to you, America, from whom I took it all in the first place. The slate is clean, and I am free to begin again.""Among a group of revolutionaries whose work rose to prominence in the late 1960s and '70s and transformed the nature of documentary photography -- a group that includes friends and colleagues of Mr. Lyon's like Mary Ellen Mark and Larry Clark -- the idea of conscience has been imbedded more deeply in Mr. Lyon's photographs than in those of all but a few of his contemporaries" (The New York Times April 24, 2009).The Focal Encyclopedia of Photography recounts,"He was self-taught as a photographer and his first images document the social struggle. It was a pattern to be repeated throughout his career -- to actively live with subgroups or participate with segments of society he would document. He became a member of a Chicago motorcycle gang, The Outlaws, before producing the book, The Bike Riders in 1968. Later he spent time with construction workers, stock care races, prison inmates, and peoples of the Third World to make his books and films" (pg. 268).Millertown, NY: Aperture, 1981. Oblong quarto, original cloth, original dust jacket; custom silk box. Text block sprung from binding; very clean text. Dust jacket with only a centimeter closed tear and light toning. Also with: a letter from Danny Lyon about this copy, an additional letter of provenance from Tom Ridinger, and associated magazine copy. A significant ensemble illustrating Lyon's own assessment of his work. Good / Very Good.

        Archive of Crow and Weasel

1981-1983. Lopez's Crow and Weasel, a fable in the style of North American Indian tales, with beautiful water color illustrations by Tom Pohrt, was published by North Point Press in 1990. This archive predates publication by 7-9 years, and represents a path not taken, documenting the guidance of Lopez, the painstaking work by Pohrt, and the over-arching influence of designer Joel Schick, who amassed this collection during the collaboration, but who did not ultimately serve as the book's designer. According to Lopez, worked stopped on this title in 1983 and began again in 1989, by which time David Bullen had replaced Schick as the designer. Much of the groundwork for the finished product remains visible however, in over 60 pages of text and images, including three signed letters from Lopez to Schick; three copies of letters from Lopez to Pohrt; 6-1/2 (one page missing) letters from Pohrt to Schick; nine retained copies of letters from Schick to Pohrt, Lopez, or both; one retained letter from Schick to Lopez's agent, Peter Schultz; and approximately 15 pages of sketches by Pohrt. Included are meticulously detailed discussions on how to involve the reader; how to anthropomorphize the characters; the characters' motivations at the points of illustration; the overall aesthetic of the book; the smoothing over of the personalities collaborating; etc., all carried out via the primitive means of type, pen, and postal service. As just one example, of Schick writing to Pohrt: "You give up a lot in order to avoid drawing that fore-shortened muzzle and the farther eye. An aspect of composition that we should probably not discuss in front of Barry. Better that our motives always be pure, or at least seem to be, even if misguided...Barry's note about the horse concerned about himself may be handled by facing him away from the action, and toward the edge of the book...Back Cover: No Dead Things!..." Again, when the book was published, in 1990, David Bullen was named as designer. However, included here is a copy of the first edition, (second state, without the gold stamping on the front cover that was removed by request of the second designer, Bullen), inscribed by Lopez to Schick, "with gratitude and affection, and a sense of delight in our long friendship." It's worth noting that Schick was Lopez's designer on his 1979 John Burroughs Medal winning book, Of Wolves and Men. All items fine. First Edition. No Binding. Fine.
