Brilliant in their intensity, sensitive to the nuances of the Los Angeles landscape and to Harvey Mudd's powerful text, remarkable in their detail, they have the painterly quality that can emerge only from the hand of a master. They offered the printer the supreme challenge and opportunity of his career. [Lichtenstein] has been equal to that challenge, as this incomparable suite of prints eloquently attests."         Illustrated Cold War Current Event Calendar, 1981-1989

Leavenworth, Kansas: Robert Wilderson, 1981-1989. Calendars lightly worn in hand-bound cardboard wrappers, newsletters overall near fine.. Unique illustrated desk calendars. Folios. Collection of eight unique, illustrated desk calendars, US Government issued, folded and bound into cardboard wrappers. The calendars document 1981 though 1987, and 1989. Additionally, the collection contains eleven pieces of Pagan/Wiccan ephemera, mostly newsletters, apparently from the early 1990s. Wilderson was a midlevel (GS-11/12) civilian planner and operations officer/analyst who worked for the Department of Defense at the US Army's Combined Arms Combat Development Activities (CACDA). During the years 1981 though 1984, nearly every day of the calendar is brightly illustrated with marker and colored pencil drawings and text, recording in a single square either current event news, pagan and other holidays, the weather, or events of personal significance. With a particular interest in conflict in Lebanon and the Middle East, relations with the USSR, the development of NASA's Space Shuttle program, Wilderson's calendar appears to track an eminent global apocalypse, presided over by a dangerously impulsive Ronald Reagan. Notations of pagan holidays and the lunar calendar add further color to this bizarre geopolitical document. An able draftsman and cartoonist, Wilderson's private desk calendars are a wildly unique perspective from an individual who was both an insider in the government and an outsider to mainstream American society. Apparently Wilderson retired after 1989, just before CACDA was downsized following the end of the Cold War. The collection of Wiccian newsletters give a glimpse into a separate life in Oregon's "Southern Williamette Pagan Network" and the "Lane County Pagan Network". The newsletters, designed on what appears to be an early Apple Macintosh, themselves document the flowering of micro-community desktop publishing enabled by the graphic interface computers that presaged the coming of the World Wide Web.

        Poster signed. Aspens. Camera

1981. Signed. ADAMS, Ansel. Poster signed. Aspens. Camera. Boston: New York Graphic Society, 1981. Large photographic poster (image measures 19 by 23-1/2 inches), printed caption below image, signature on recto, framed (total measures 26 by 36-inches). $5000.Large 1981 poster boldly signed by Ansel Adams, featuring an exceptionally fine image of his soaring Aspens, Northern New Mexico, 1958—""an Adams masterpiece""—one of the first in a select grouping to feature an image personally chosen by Ansel for a poster to replicate ""as closely as possible the quality of his originalsÂ… Adams supervised the first print runs; the posters were so good that he chuckled that the one of Aspens in particular looked better than a print made in the darkroom""(Alinder), issued to commemorate his photobook, The Camera, a splendid framed exhibition-size poster, scarce signed.Near the end of his life, Ansel Adams ""decided to produce a series of posters replicating as closely as possible the quality of his originals. Ansel chose three images to begin with—Moonrise, Clearing Winter Storm, and Aspens (vertical)—and made extra-large prints of each so that they could be directly laser-scanned with no enlargement. Each poster was designed to highlight a recent book. Ansel's favorite printer, David Gardner of Gardner Lithograph, made superb duotone reproductions on heavy coated stock, and the combination of laser-scanning and exquisite printing resulted in an image with a huge range of clearly defined tonesÂ… Ansel supervised the first press runs; the posters were so good that he chuckled that the one of Aspens in particular looked better than a print made in the darkroom."" This scarce exhibition-size signed poster, with its soaring image of Aspens, Northern New Mexico, 1958—""an Adams masterpiece""—is within that select first group, and highlights his photobook, The Camera. To famed MoMA director of photography, John Szarkowski, these landscapes by Adams ""are his greatest picturesÂ… where his most original, most intense work has been done. Ultimately that's going to be how we remember him"" (Alinder, 337-8, 305, 313). ""Adams photographed landscapes with razor-sharp precision and an incomparable eyeÂ… He elevated the act of photography to a religious experience"" (Icons of Photography, 96). Precedes the limited series of 350 signed photolithographs. Poster designed by Steven Harvard; printed by Gardner/Fulmer. With printed copyright of the Trustees of the Ansel Adams Published Trust at lower edge. A fine signed print, handsomely framed.
