        Lijiang River Guilin.

Number 25 of a limited edition of 99.. 1981.. Large limited edition photolithograph of the Li River from a series by Sir Sidney Nolan. 72 x 57cm. Framed 97 x 82cm. Very good in a handsome gold frame. Striking image of the Li River and limestone karst hills near Guilin in Guangxi Province by Australian painter Sir Sidney Nolan. Sidney Nolan was emotionally and intellectually engaged and inspired by China and the work of Chinese artists. He visited China on at least seven occasions, returning home to paint the feeling and emotion that the glorious landscapes he saw had inspired. The expressionist landscape depicted here is one in a series of paintings of the Lijian River inspired by Nolan's visit to the famous area around Guilin. It strikes the viewer as both Chinese while simultaneously very Western. In a conversation between Sidney Nolan and Edmund Capon, Sidney Nolan in China, published by the Art Gallery of NSW in 1981, Sidney Nolan talked about his first impressions of the extraordinary landscape around Guilin. "When I got out of the aeroplane at Kweilin, first I looked at these mountains, which of course, I knew from some [Chinese] paintings, but I was amazed at the intensity and the actuality of the mountains and my first thought was, "Oh, so that is how they did those over lapping blots, and that is where it comes from, it is actually real". Sidney Nolan's paintings of the Li River are a stunning example of the power of mixing Chinese and Western influences and aesthetics. These works deserve to hold an important place in the Australia-China relationship. .

Midnight's Children - Complete with wrap-around band and SIGNED by artist and author

Cape 1981 - A first edition, first printing published by Jonathan Cape in 1981. A fine book (one minute spot to the bottom of the ffep) – a superb example of the book with the original 'rough cut' pages – no inscriptions, no marks or stains. SIGNED without dedication to the title page by the author and the dust wrapper artist, Bill Botten. In a near fine wrapper with the usual sunning (light sunning) to the spine and a little wear to the top of the rear end-flap.         Ordinancie, statuyt ende policie gemaect byden coninck onsen aldernadichsten Heere, op tfeyt vande contracten vande asseurancien ende versekeringen in dese Nederlanden. Antwerp, Christoffel Plantin, 1571. 4to. With armorial woodcut on title-page. Modern vellum.

USTC 401508 (6 copies); Voet 1981 (4 copies, incl. 3 the same); WorldCat (3 the same copies); cf. M. Huybrechts (ed.), Marine insurance at the turn of the millennium II (2000), p. 18. Rare royal decree on marine insurance addressed to the Council of Brabant, replacing the decree of 27 October 1570. In 1569 the Duke of Alfa took a radical measure by banning all marine insurance. "This "provisional" decree of 31 March 1569 was abolished by an ordinance of 27 October 1570 of Philips II. Marine insurances were again allowed. … Ships could only leave the port with the permission of an officer after an inspection of their armament. This decree also charged that all policies should contain a detailed report of the goods on board. … Diego Gonzalez Gante was appointed to inspect these contracts. He also had to prepare an new instruction. This decree contained as well a formulary of an marine insurance. After a petition of the merchants and Nations of Antwerp, a new ordinance was promulgated three months later, on 20 January 1571. This decree provided that only ten percent remained to the own risk of the insurance taker. The goods, the name of the vessel and the captain had to be mentioned in the insurance policy. To prevent fraud, Diego Gonzalez Gante was also appointed to control everything. An insurance policy which was not recorded by him was to be declared null and void. Not only in Antwerp, but also in Bruges, Amsterdam and Middelburg people under his authority had full powers to verify this" (Huybrechts). This decree also prohibited life assurance. With three lines underscored, otherwise a very good copy and wholly untrimmed.

        Museum für (Sub-) Kultur

West Berlin: Museum für (Sub-) Kultur, 1981. First edition. 4to, [4], 83 pp. + index. Xeroxed on various colors of paper stock. Clipbound into orange card wraps. Illustrated with b/w photographs and reproductions. One of 150 copies printed. Texts in German and English. Artists' publication documenting exhibitions at the Museum für (Sub-) Kultur from 1980-1981. The Museum was an artist-run alternate arts venue created and operated by Detlef Carl, Gerti Fietzek, and Andreas Stucken, and financed by "surplus gained through the jobs of" the three. It was connected to a library and collection of works from the 1960's and 1970's at Stucken's private flat. The group was associated with COLAB and Fashion Moda as part of Collectiva International, a group of alternate art groups in the early 1980's. This connection with the New York downtown scene is exemplified here by the inclusion of work by Jenny Holzer & Peter Nadin (including photographs of altered graffiti and photographs of posters in situ from their early 1981 exhibition at the gallery), Reese Williams, Sean Scully, Catherine Porter-Scully, and Judy Rifka. Other artists included are Onze Rue Clavel, Goran Djordjevi , Zvi Goldstein, Gerard Hemsworth, Jochen Krüger, and Dominique Pasqualini. Rare. This is the first example we've seen, and OCLC locates only one holding. Fine.

        Philosophical Explanations.

Cambridge, MA: The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 1981. First edition of Nozick's metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical treatise. Octavo, original cloth. Warmly inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Frank Murphy, a constant and interesting presence in my office hour(s)? Best, Robert Nozick Dec. 1982." From the library of Harvard, fine in a very good dust jacket with some wear and rubbing. Uncommon signed and inscribed and with noted provenance. "An important book...[Nozick is] a philosopher who is answering the questions posed by such philosophers as Kierkegaard, Sartre, Marcel and Buber with the aid of tools produced by such very different philosophers as W. V. Quine, Saul Kripke and Hilary Putnam...[He displays a] striking and imaginative originality. For he does nothing less than propose a new way of doing philosophy...Perhaps one good way for the serious general reader to attack this often difficult but always rewarding book would be to begin at the end. First read the fine last chapter on 'Philosophy and the Meaning of Life'...It should then be very clear why it is important for you, whoever you are, to go back and read the rest of this book" (Alasdair MacIntyre New York Times Book Review). Michael E. Bratman describes Philosophical Explanations as "a rich and wide-ranging exploration of some of the deepest issues in philosophy." He praises Nozick's discussion of free will, writing that there is much about it that is, "fascinating, suggestive, and worth our further reflection."

      - USTC 401508 (6 copies); Voet 1981 (4 copies, incl. Ships could only leave the port with the permission of an officer after an inspection of their armament. This decree also charged that all policies should contain a detailed report of the goods on board. Diego Gonzalez Gante was appointed to inspect these contracts.

Without DJ, as issued. Presents Robert Rauschenberg's "Photos In + Out City Limits: Boston". The great artist's collection of black-and-white photographs on Boston. It is the partial fulfillment of his 30-year-old wish to photograph the entire United States, a project he never completed. Showcases his unique approach to photography as a process of discovery, selection, and assemblage of objects from everyday life. One of the least well-known facts about Rauschenberg is that he began his career as a photographer. He makes no distinction between his photography and his painting, and he brings the same acute eye to both. The photographs, like the paintings, are formally rigorous, sensuous, and piercing. His celebrated method of appropriating found images and objects to capture the fabric, tempo, and "feel" of modern life is photographically-inspired and characterizes his large body of work. The idea of appropriation is not unique to Rauschenberg. It is a central tenet of Surrealism and continues to be the latter Movement's enduring legacy. What makes Rauschenberg's work unique is the way he has "set in motion an interplay of shapes in which the human form is integrated to a rigorous yet flamboyant sense of design, pictures in which art and real life coincide" (Pontus Hulten) . "A protean genius who showed America that all of life could be open to art. Rauschenberg didn't give a fig for consistency or curating his reputation; his taste was always facile, omnivorous, and hit-or-miss, yet he had a big-ness of soul and a richness of temperament that recalled Walt Whitman" (Robert Hughes) . "Mine is the need to be where it will always never be the same again. Photography is the most direct communication of non-violent contacts" (Robert Rauschenberg) . An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Rauschenberg collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in pencil by Robert Rauschenberg. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great art photography book. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Many copies available online have major flaws because the color white soils very easily. According to dealers who knew him, Rauschenberg basically stopped signing books in the 1990's. Signed copies still available online are vintage, not recent, and very few. A rare signed copy thus. 45 tritone plates. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy.         Superman: multi-panel page of original Sunday newspaper strip artwork by George Tuska, black ink on Strathmore paper. Dated, upper left, "Sunday,10-11"

New York: D.C. Comics, Inc, 1981. 1 vols. 16 x 22 inches. Fine. 1 vols. 16 x 22 inches. A vigorous multi-panel drawing, by Tuska, fully lettered, of the exploits of the first and greatest superhero. Tuska specialized in particularly intense action scenes; he also illustrated such series as Green Lantern, Teen Titans, Justice League, Infinity, and Power Man. A fine, original example of 1970s action comic art. George Tuska finished his studies at the National Academy School of Art at age 21. In 1939, he became John Terry's assistant on 'Scorchy Smith'. At the same time, he joined the graphic studios of Jerry Iger and Will Eisner. There he worked on several comic books, like 'Jungle', 'Wings', 'Planet Wonderworld' and 'Mystery Men'. In the 1940s, Tuska created the character 'Hercule' for Quality Comics and, as a member of Studio Chesler, he drew several episodes of 'Captain Marvel', 'Golden Arrow', 'Uncle Sam' and 'El Carim'. Tuska was mobilized during World War II, so he had to postpone his comic activities. After the war, he continued in the comic field with 'The Crime Does Not Pay', and as the illustrator on 'Scorchy Smith'. In 1959, he took over the daily and weekly 'Buck Rogers' pages, which he continued until 1967. In the late 1960s, Tuska started working for Marvel, where he contributed to the series 'Ghost Rider', 'Planet of the Apes', 'X-Men', 'Daredevil' and 'Iron Man'. He continued drawing superhero comics for DC, like 'Superman', 'Superboy' and 'Challengers of the Unknown'. In 1978, along with José Delbo, Paul Kupperberg and Martin Pasko, Tuska started a new version of the daily 'Superman' comic. Tuska worked on this series until 1993.
