Imagines septem planetarum. [Paris], Thomas Leu, [1606/10]. Small folio leaves (22 x 15.5 cm) in a large 8vo album (25 x 19.5 cm). With an engraved title-print and 7 numbered engraved allegorical prints of the seven planets. The title probably engraved by Leu himself but the rest by Henri Le Roy (plate size 17 x 11.5 cm to 18 x 12 cm). Recased in late 18th-century green half goatskin morocco, with the leaves tipped onto modern pink laid paper.

      - KVK & WorldCat (1 copy); J. Seznec, The survival of the pagan gods (1981), pp. 69-71. Very rare and beautiful print series of astrological allegories by Henri Le Roy and Thomas Leu, engravers and print publishers in Paris. At the head of each of the 7 prints appears the planet god riding across the sky in a chariot pulled by appropriate animals or beasts (or in the case of Luna by her maidens) in Ptolemaic order from outermost to innermost: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sol (the sun), Venus, Mercury and Luna (the moon) with their names and astrological symbols. The twelve zodiac signs with their symbols appear at the head (1 each for the sun and moon and two each for the others). The earthly scene below each figure, filling about two-thirds of the image, shows a landscape or cityscape (sometimes by the sea or a harbour) with numerous people engaged in activities associated with the god and planet: mining for Saturn, commerce for Mercury, etc. At the foot of each print is a three-line engraved caption. Allegorical representations of the planets became popular in the 15th-century and several engravers produced planetary print series. A ca. 1568 series without title by Maarten van Heemskerk was perhaps the first to depict each planet god riding across the sky in a chariot with an earthly scene below. The Bibliotheque Nationale has a fifteenth-century manuscript with the title "Imagines septem planetarum" giving descriptions rather than images. After the present series other engravers produced similar print series, though we have not noticed another with the present title, matching that of the 15th-century manuscript. The prints have been trimmed leaving a margin of about 2 cm around the plate edges and show an occasional minor spot or smudge, but are otherwise in fine condition. The binding is slightly rubbed but still very good. A very rare and beautiful print series, one of the earliest allegorical series of the seven planets and their influences on earth.

Presence: Photographs with Observation by Shirley C. Burden [SIGNED]

Aperture, New York 1981 - 1/100. Sm. 4to. Unpaginated. Mottled tan cloth with silver lettering on cover and spine in original slipcase. Signed on colophon by artist. Profusely illustrated with b/w reproductions of photographs on glossy paper. Preface by Thomas Keating. Accompanied by an original 9" x 12" silver print 'Ellis Island 1956', signed on verso in pencil by Burden, window-mounted on stiff board (16" x 20") in original portfolio of tan paper-covered boards with white folding flaps and silver lettering on front cover. With original wrapping paper of portfolio. Book and slipcase in fine, portfolio and photo as new, all in publisher's original shipping box. Rare. "What is presence? It is a relationship to something or someone. Shirley Burden's sensitive presence to concrete things is recorded in these photographs and in his commentary. He details patterns on a street in Los Angeles and discovers humorous groupings of chairs in a French park. A dead pigeon epitomizes the fruit of his search through the abandoned buildings of Ellis Island. He reveals a special presence to people like Dorothea Lange and the pilgrims at Lourdes - and they reveal theirs to him. He is also present to the invisible world of faith through his experience at the Abbey of our Lady of Gethsemani and at Lourdes, where the past, present, and future seem to come together for him in the realization of a Presence that is beyond all words and photographs - yet is nonetheless somehow present in them." (Thomas Keating). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES (INSCRIBED BY TOOLE'S MOTHER)

Louisiana State University Press 1981 - BOLDLY SIGNED WITH A LARGE INSCRIPTION BY JOHN KENNEDY TOOLE'S MOTHER (THELMA TOOLE) BY JOHN KENNEDY TOOLE Louisiana State University Press, 1981 First Edition, Sixth Printing: Important Signed with a large personal inscription by John Kennedy Toole's mother as: "Sept. 2, 1981 Appreciation and regards from John Kennedy Toole's mother, Thelma Ducoing Toole, to the Dedicated Wives of LSU's Medical Faculty". The incredible story behind the publication of this amazing Pulitzer Prize winning novel is quite unique: A Confederacy of Dunces was a posthumously published novel that was the first work of fiction published by the LSU Press: and which had a very small first printing (reportedly 2500 copies), Initially the book was rejected by dozens of publishers and the author committed suicide in 1969. Years later the author's mother brought the manuscript to Walker Percy, insisting that he read it. Percy overcame his initial hesitations and championed the book, arranging for its publication and contributing an introduction. Ultimately it long deserving acknowledgment for excellence, reviews and word of mouth led to its becoming a best-seller, and it won the Pulitzer Prize. (For this obvious reason one will never find this book ever signed by the author), however the person who was instrumental is having the book published and recognized was John's mother, albeit after her son's death -- but at least his wonderful novel made the mark in literature that John would have always dreamed of. A Confederacy of Dunces is considered a comic-satiric-tragic and one of a kind rendering of life in New Orleans. First Edition, Sixth Printing: Near fine crisp, clean book with a very good plus dust jacket. The book is in beautiful condition, with crisp beige boards with strong unfaded titles. The book has sharp corners and a tight and square binding. The internal pages are clean, bright and flat with No marks, No writing, No stains, No smudges, No bent pages and No foxing. Beautiful clean book internally appearing as unread. Important boldly large inscription by by John Kennedy Toole's mother who was the catalyst to making this book published long after the death of her son and author of the novel. The original slightly nicked and rubbed dust jacket is in very good condition and is not price clipped and has the stated price of $12.95. The jacket is now protected in a new clear removable archival cover. Please see detailed images. A incredible, scarce example of this title! ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.         Familiar Street Scenes

First edition, limited to 500 copies. 247 by 267mm. Unpaginated. 47 colour plates. Black cloth with title and author stamped in English in silver on upper board and in Japanese on the spine. White card slip-case with a photograph on its front and the title and author printed in black in English and Japanese. Slip-case is protected by a plastic wrapper. Both book and case are in fine condition. The photographs in this, the last of Gocho's three published works were taken between April 1978 and October 1980. As with his other work, there is a sense of Gocho's detachment from the world around him, born in part perhaps from his own difficult circumstances. He was born in 1946 with a rare degenerative illness which prevented him from growing to full adult height; he was only four feet tall. Furthermore Gocho knew from an early age that he would not live beyond middle age; he died in 1983. "Shigeo Gochō's final series, Familiar Street Scenes, marks a significant departure from the style of portraits for which he had become known. He used color film for the first time and sought out fleeting formal patterns in the bustle and flow of the streets of downtown Tokyo while moving closer to his subjects, which he then presented in larger, bold prints. The diminished distance between the photographer and his subjects leads to a more confrontational relationship. Though some return his gaze, their expressions convey an admonishment rather than a shared acceptance". (Catalogue of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston)

        DANGLING IN THE TOURNEFORTIA

Santa Barbara: Black Sparrow, 1981. First edition, signed limited and enhanced. Hardcover. A very good plus, to near fine, clean copy with red backstrip and decorated boards with acetate jacket. #119 of 350 hardcover copies numbered and signed by the author. Occasionally, Bukowski would take a break from the tedium of signing, and, let his mind wander and, he would write down whatever came into his head in that instant. Like a mental erection, that had to explode on the page, and, in this copy, though only his signature was called for, he wrote down his thoughts; "People Who Constantly / Talk About "Love" / Remind Me Very Much / Of A Pair Of Gloves / Lost In That Compart- / ment of an automobile / Far To The Right And / Forgotten Until Found / In A Junkyard A / Decade Later To Be / Worn Upon The / Hands Of A / Sadist. For Further / Use." Signed "Charles Bukowski." With two original drawings, a dog, and a large flower. A one-of-a-kind copy, 281pp of poetry with an impromptue short story at the end!

        Valis

New York: Bantam Books, 1981. 8vo. 204pp. Lacking one leaf (pp.101-2), possibly from the time of binding. Original green printed wrappers, green linen backstrip, publication date of January 1, 1981 changed in manuscript to February. Scarce proof of Dick's 'Valis', of which only a small number were prepared (by one account only 19 copies), none of which were sent to reviewers. The leaf adjacent to the lacking leaf is slightly extended from the block and discolored along the fore-edge. Although it is possible that these two leaves were at one point sprung, the tightness of the binding and lack of an obvious gap at the gutter suggest the binding error may have been present from the start. Laid-in is Bantam's "Brief Description" for the book, mimeographed typescript, 4to, three paragraphs.

Fine Art of Walt Disney's Donald Duck

Another Rainbow 1981 - This is the famous McDuck Edition. The book is maroon with a maroon slipcase. The slipcase and the book each have a different picture on the front cover. The book is fine while the slipcase has some slight scuffs which would render it very good. The maroon cover seems to be rarer than the blue.311 pages, limited to1875 copies of which this is 638.         Presentation volume commemorating the opening of King Abdulaziz International Airport.

Riyadh: Tihama, [1981] - Original button-fastened dark red leatherette folio presentation box (415 × 260 mm), gilded metal roundel with relief of the hajj terminal mounted to front panel, green velvet lining. Containing 3 pamphlets in pictorial wrappers (2 wire-stitched) and a large (80 mm diameter) commemorative coin engraved with a relief portrait of King Abdulaziz, as issued. Leatherette very slightly lifting in isolated sections along edges on rear panel with a few faint creases, one pamphlet ("Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ministry of Defence and Aviation International Airports Projects") lightly rubbed at extremities, coin with one very faint scratch to verso. Overall very good. Pamphlets all with text in Arabic and English, and illustrated throughout from colour photographs. King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah, was opened in 1981, and was the first airport in the world to contain a hajj terminal specifically for Muslims making the pilgrimage to Mecca. It was designed by the noted Bangladeshi-American engineer Fazlur Rahman Khan, and was awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1983 chiefly for its innovative tent-like roofing system. One pamphlet, titled "King Abdulaziz International Airport", in wrappers printed with symbols for amenities, comprises sections titled "Asset to the Kingdom", "A City Within a City", "Gateway to Mecca", and "World's Newest Airport". Another, "King Abdulaziz International Airport – Jeddah", in wrappers illustrated with photographs of Saudi royals, provides a more strictly factual overview of the airport and its facilities. The third pamphlet, "Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ministry of Defence and Aviation International Airports Projects", shows the luxury interiors and art collections of the airport's VIP areas.
