        Littlewoods Computer Center

Liverpool, 1981. Album of photographs from the Littlewoods Computer Center, showing then state-of-the-art (now obsolete) computer technology, being a presentation album made by Service Engineers John Laing Design Associates Limited, one of the four notable firms involved in the project. Contains 14 colour photographs, measuring approximately 12 x 17 cm, mounted recto and verso onto heavy sage green cardstock leaves, each captioned in typescript, and preserved with plastic sleeves in a ring binder measuring approximately 28 x 32 x 4 cm. Also containing a dedication page and specifications sheet. At the time housing and utilising the latest in computer technology, the "New Computer Building" was owned by Littlewoods Organisation Ltd., a notable Liverpool firm whose own architects were part of the design team. It was a four storey building, 3600 square meters, with limited access for security reasons. Indeed advanced for the time, a card key operated the turnstile entrance door. By today's standards, the machines were behemoth-sized. Ventilation and refrigeration were of utmost importance, and are well illustrated in these views, with ventilated ceilings and floor air returns for continuous circulation, immense water chilling machines and chilled water pumps to produce cool air for the building, air cooled condensers, "heat rejection voids" a separate room for an air conditioning plant, and giant filter systems throughout. The cooling requirements were 200 tonnes flowing at all times, and 100 tonnes on standby. For an uninterrupted power source, rows upon rows of batteries were lined up like soldiers, each connected to the other, in the special battery chamber. Three computer rooms are shown, where one cannot help but to notice the infamous DOS screens, and again, the sheer physical size of the equipment. The "data preparation area" is a room with a half a dozen desks, and male employees working in mounds of paper documents. The main processing unit was a Honeywell Levell 66. [The Honeywell 6000 series computers were rebadged versions of General Electric's 600-series mainframes manufactured by Honeywell International Inc from 1970 to 1989. Honeywell acquired the line when it purchased GE's computer division in 1966 and continued to develop them under a variety of names for many years. In 1975 the 6000-series systems were renamed as Level 66, which were slightly faster (to 1.2 MIPS) and offered larger memories. In 1977 the line was again renamed 66/DPS, and in 1979 to DPS-8, again with a small performance improvement to 1.7 MIPS.] A fascinating visual reminder of the foundational inventions which would change the world in then inconceivable ways, not only improving communications, finance, and transport, but every industry large and small, and every future household too.

Party at the Ritz Hotel. Jacques Henri Lartigue and Bill Brandt. 1981.

745 x 520mm. Giclée Print using Archival pigment inks on Hahnemüle Fine Art Pearl 285gsm paper. Limited edition of 10 numbered copies signed by the photographer. Alan Davidson is a press photographer based in London for more than 30 years, Alan has photographed the rich, the famous, the before-they-were-famous to those that have fallen from grace. Going through his vast archive, with new treasures found within the old brown manilla envelopes, reads like a who's who of the great and good (and the very bad) of London society. Cinema stars rub shoulders with pop stars, royalty with politicians. Working from the late 1960s to the present day Alan remembers the days before celebrities became surrounded by 30 young publicists and before there were 50 photographers at every event you went to, allowing him to take intimate and relaxed portraits, unlike the anodyne syndicated press shots of today.

Smegma the Magazine. No. 1 (October 1978) through no. 4 (1981); with Smegma calendar for 1981 (all published)

A complete run in four issues (26, 22, 26, 22 pp.) plus "Calendar 1981, a By-Product of Smegma The Magazine" of the influential and irreverant underground art magazine, directed by "Torridzone Igloo" (Alexander Hirka) and "Scarlatina Lust", devoted to recent developments in the New York avant garde art scene including Mail Art, Stamp Art, photography, collage, Xerox Art, etc., with contributions by dozens of artists, profusely illustrated throughout each issue with Xerox montage images, photographs, drawings, and cartoons. Issue no. 3 includes Cavelini 1914-2014 sticker and Smegatronics flexidisc, issue no. 4 with rubber-stamped Bible page. 4to., calendar tall 4to. Illus. self-wrpps., calendar ring-bound. New York 1978-1981. The ephemeral serial is rare and includes contributions from Buster Cleveland, John Evans, E.F.Higgins III, Ray Johnson, G. A. Cavellini, Tuli Kupfergerg, Lance Loud and a host of others. The audio-montage flexidisc included with issue no. 4, titled "Hot Dog, You Bet!", was cited as a favorite by Lester Bangs in the November 1980 "Village Voice Pazz & Jop" survey. Wildly anarchic in layout, design and editorial vision, SMEGMA pre-figured the photocopy montage aesthetics of later punk fanzines and explicitly acknowledged its own historical antecedents in Dada and Futurism. It offers a fascinating window into an overlooked avant-garde movement of lower Manhattan in the late-70s-early-80s with clear links to the international correspondence art movement of the same period.

A Boy's Life [Working title for E.T. the Extra Terrestrial]

Culver City, CA: Extra-Terrestrial Productions, Inc, 1981. 4to. 113 pages. Original printed wrappers, closed with three brass brads. Slightest handling wear. Spielberg's classic film 'E.T. the Extra Terrestrial' began filming in September 1981 under the cover name 'A Boy's Life,' to prevent discovery and plagiarism on the plot. Everyone on set had to wear an ID card, and actors had to read the script behind closed doors. The film was shot mostly in chronological order, to produce as convincing an emotional development as possible. The shoot completed in 61 days, four days ahead of schedule. The title-page of this shooting script bears the same date as the front cover. Several of the leaves were updated during shooting, and are dated 8/26-9/8/81. 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' was directed by Steven Spielberg, written by Melissa Mathison, produced by Spielberg and Kathleen Keneedy, and starred Henry Thomas, Drew Barrymore, Dee Wallace, Peter Coyote, and Robert McNaughton. The film won four Oscars: Best Sound, Best Effects - Visual Effects (including Carlo Rambaldi), Best Effects-Sound Effects Editing, and Best Music-Original Score (by John Williams). It was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Writing-Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen, Best Cinematography, and Best Film Editing.

        A Confederacy Of Dunces

London: Allen Lane, 1981. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First UK Impression, one of only 1500 copies, with a foreword by Walker Percy. 8vo: xii,338pp. Publisher's parchment-colored paper-covered boards, spine lettered in gilt; illustrated dust jacket, repriced with publisher's sticker £7.95. A superlative copy (indeed As New) and yet another example of the value to be found in UK editions of American authors's works. This cult classic (and now mainstream success) first appeared eleven years after Toole's suicide, published through the efforts of Walker Percy and Toole's mother, earning Toole a posthumous Pulitzer Prize. The book's title is drawn from Jonathan Swift's essay Thoughts on Various Subjects, Moral and Diverting: "When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him." The book chronicles the "misadventures of Ignatius Jacques Reilly, an obese, lazy, obnoxious, opinionated, erudite, quixotic thirty-year-old medievalist who views himself as "an anachronism": he criticizes, and alienates himself from, the contemporary reality of 1960s New Orleans, preferring, in the "Miltonic isolation" of his bedroom, an idealized medieval world view inspired by Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy and determined by Fortuna, the goddess of fortune." the misadventures of Ignatius J. Reilly, a lazy, obese, misanthropic, self-styled scholar who lives at home with his mother in the Uptown neighborhood of early 1960s New Orleans." (Literary Encyclopedia) Toole wrote the novel in 1963, during his final few months in Puerto Rico. The novel has sold some 1.5 million copies and has been translated into more than 20 languages. Toole is now widely regarded as a gifted prose stylist who has immortalized the eccentricity of New Orleans. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.       MEDU Art Ensemble - Lithograph. Unique. c.1981. 42 x 63 cm. Due to the fact that Thami Mnyele and 13 other cultural workers were murdered in Gabarone , Botswana by the SADF in the early hours of 14 June 1985 in a covert cross-border raid MEDU ceased to exist from this day forward. Their archives and workshops were destroyed and/or confiscated and brought back to South Africa as examples of communist inspired "art treason". As a result very few original posters survive today, in some cases one estimates less than 5 copies. In some cases only 50 or 80 copies were printed which were all made by hand and were usually silkscreened. Illustrated "The rationalism of nationalism?" published by Warren Siebrits, Johannesburg in 2008. pg27 (colour) and is the exact poster used for the exhibition and making of the catalogue. This particular poster is so rare that it did not form part of the collection exhibited at the Johannesburg Art Gallery in 2009. This poster is sold together with "The rationalism of nationalism?". The poster is in very good condition. Photos on request. ONCO (Or Nearest Cash Offer). Free Shipping Worldwide. Registered Airmail. Extra Charge for Courier Service.

        Midnight’s Children

NY: Knopf, (1981) - New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1981. First edition of the author’s Booker Prize-winning novel, also acclaimed as the Booker of Bookers. Fine (but for a previous owner quite small name and address on the front free endpaper) in a fine dust jacket with the ubiquitous standard sunning to the spine panel. A beautiful example. Midnight’s Children chronicles modern India through the lives of the one thousand and one children born within the country’s first hour of independence on August 15, 1947. “An extraordinary novel one of the most important to come out of the English-speaking world in this generation” (Robert Towers, The New York Times Book Review). Listed by Modern Library as one of the 100 greatest novels of the 20th century. A serious collectible example made even more special as this sharp Booker of Bookers First Edition is signed on the title page by Salman Rushdie. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
