THE DIARY OF ANAIS NIN. Volume 7: 1966-1974. Signed

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Jovanovich, 1981 Nin, Anais. THE DIARY OF ANAIS NIN. Volume 7: 1966-1974. New York: Harcourt, Brace & Jovavich, 1981. First Edition; First Printing. 8vo., 432pp. A fine copy in like dustwrapper. An excellent TLS tipped to the front free endpaper. [Anais Nin] Rupert Pole. TLS to Henry Miller, Oct 23rd 1979 8vo., on their printed letterhead with monogram. Signed "Rupert". Great content about Vol 7 of the diaries which is approaching a major deadline requiring miller to review the part related to himself & to give his OK, etc. Nice letter. There is a photo [not included] of Anais Nin & Rupert Pole, holding their poodle, Piccola, at their home in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles. Mr. Pole, who erroneously believed Nin was divorced when their relationship began, hoped the house would help entice Nin to stay instead of returning to her other husband. (1963 Photo By Christian Dubois Larsen Via Los Angeles Times). Rupert Pole, the husband of Anais Nin was guardian of the diarist's erotic literary legacy. For many years, Nin was married at the same time to Mr. Pole & to a banker in New York, Hugh "Hugo" Guiler. She & Mr. Pole divorced but continued to live together until her death in 1977. After her death, Mr. Pole oversaw the publication of four unabridged volumes of her erotic journals, which detail her affairs with such men as Henry Miller, psychoanalyst Otto Rank and her own father, Spanish composer Joaquin Nin. Seven previous volumes, which had been purged of much of the salacious material - as well as most references to her husbands - had established Nin as a cult figure, revered by many in the women's movement for her embrace of sexual freedom & exploration of the female psyche. The uncensored diaries overseen by Mr. Pole introduced Nin's work to a broader audience. Provenance: The Henry Miller Archive.. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

        Pastel drawing of Peter Pan

1981. An original drawing of Peter Pan, in pencil and pastel on gray paper. Together with a manuscript poem written by Gould upon completion of the work. The drawing shows the face of Peter Pan gazing through a thicket of leaves and branches. His “ageless” eyes, as Gould describes them in his poem, are two slightly different earthy shades, hazel-brown and green, which give him an otherworldly appearance. The leaves are delicately colored with yellow pastel and highlighted with white. The color and texture of Peter’s hair echoes that of the branches; he is truly part of nature. In the accompanying poem, Gould writes in Peter’s voice: “At the wood’s heart you will find me, / In each leaf and blade, / Beneath each rock and loam, / In shadows I wait.” Signed in the bottom-left corner with Gould’s initials. The drawing was commissioned by Anne Bromer when Gould was an emerging Massachusetts-based artist. Gould began his career as a fantasy artist, book designer, and illustrator, and his work has appeared on the covers of many popular fantasy series. In 1991, he left the field of book design to work in the film industry. The drawing measures approximately 16 1/4 by 12 inches, in a wooden frame measuring 19 1/2 by 15 3/4 inches. Later reproduced as a limited-edition poster.

Andy Warhol - Philippe. Photographies Originales

S.l.: Par l'auteur, 1981.

Satan in Goray ... With a new introductory essay by the author The Making of a First Book

New York: Sweetwater Editions, 1981. 4to. (11 1/2 x 8 3/4 inches). Frontispiece and illustrations after Moskowitz, 10 etched plates by Moskowitz, each signed in pencil by the artist. Purple morocco, the upper cover and spine tooled in gilt. Limited edition of 475 copies, this copy out-of-series and un-numbered, with the limitation leaf signed by the author and artist, and all the etchings signed by the artist. "For this edition ... the author has made certain revisions in the English language text. He also wrote a new, introductory essay ... Ira Moskowitz has created ten original copperplate etchings and forty drawings for the text. The etchings have been pulled at the Emiliano Sorini studio, New York, on Arches paper. The text and the drawings have been printed by the Meridien Gravure Company, Meridien, Connencticut on Linweave text" (limitation leaf). "I. B. Singer's first novel was Satan in Goray which he first published in installments in a literary magazine, Globus, which he had founded with his life-long friend, the Yiddish poet Aaron Zeitlin in 1935. It tells the story of the events in the village of Goraj (close to Bilgoraj), after the terrible catastrophe of 1648, where the Jews of Poland lost a third of their population in a cruel uprising by Cossacks and the effects of the seventeenth century faraway false messiah Shabbatai Zvi on the local population. Its last chapter is written in the style imitative of medieval Yiddish chronicle. In its stark depiction of innocence crushed by circumstance it appears like a foreboding of the coming danger."         Sonate und Sonatine für Streichquartett. 1. Sonate "Brinje." 2. Sonatine "Das reine Gedicht." Autograph musical manuscript full score, dated October 1981 at conclusion. Complete

[1] (title), 2-59 pp. Folio (304 x 220 mm.). Full dark orange leather with titling and decorative devices stamped in gilt to upper and "Sammlung Dr. Heinz-Georg v. Kamler, Wien" stamped in gilt to lower board. Notated in pencil on 12-stave music manuscript paper. With an autograph presentation from the composer to Dr. Heinz-Georg and Michaela von Kamler to title, signed and dated Vienna, November 9, 1981. Together with: Two autograph letters from the composer to the von Kamlers providing a description of the work, a performance of it, and news of the players (suggesting that the von Kamlers may have actually have commissioned the work) and copies of the published score and parts issued by Doblinger in 1990. . Kont studied composition with Lechthaler, Polnauer, Swarowsky and Krips in Vienna and later with Milhaud, Messiaen and Honegger in Paris. The present work was inspired by the folk music Kont heard while serving as a soldier in Croatia in World War II. "Progressive pioneer who... startled musically insecure post-war Austria, or a traditionalist who is sometimes labelled a "Conservative"? - More contradictory verdicts have been applied to hardly any other composer in recent Austria's music scene than to Paul Kont. The notion of the "avant-gardist" ha[d] become manifest already in the first years after the war, when Kont - unlike many of his contemporaries - did not so much follow tendencies originating in Hindemith (and, to a lesser degree, in Webern and Schoenberg), but developed a polytonal style deriving from piano improvisation - resulting in the so-called phase of "captured improvisation". The course of his later studies in the years following 1947 resulted in the evolution of the "complex technique", in which... individual parts are treated independently and are joined together in complexes of exclusively metrical and tonal consolidation. His studies of dodecaphony from the year 1951 onwards led to an alternative concept to serialism: the employment of "statistic values". In this technique, it is of paramount importance that the distribution of pitches and other parameters result in a harmonically feasible.. [whole], within the bounds of which free development is possible. Kont's most important innovation is the development of the "third tonality" (also called "new" or "wide" tonality) in the years following 1963..." "... In Kont's "third tonality" functional harmony is abolished, and the diatonic and pure-interval voice-leading of the separate parts leads to a sometimes widely branching writing, which, in polyphony, often brings about surreal harmonies. [This]... theory, as formulated in his book, Antianorganikum, finds its most strident application in the Weinheber oratorio, Vom Manne und vom Weibe (" Of Man and of Woman", 1964). Parallel to these innovative concepts, Kont worked - most notably in his Lieder, which were melodically sketched during the war and worked out until 1977 - with a "method of metrical motives", in which motives, melody and form are derived from the metre, verse and stanza of the text. Kont's late work forms an applied synthesis of these various innovations." Christian Heindl, translated by Nicolas Radulescu, in Paul Kont: Music Published by Doblinger, pp. 4-5. The von Kammlers were also the dedicatees of Gottfried von Einem's 4th String Quartet, op. 63.

        The Ultimate Good Luck

Houghton Mifflin Boston: Houghton Mifflin. 1981. A review copy of his second novel, a hard-boiled thriller involving American expatriates in Mexico. Signed by the author. Partly because of the weak construction at the rear hinge, which tends to crack, this title has become harder to locate, particularly in fine condition, than his first book. This copy has just a hint of the start of a crack at the lower rear joint and is otherwise fine in a very near fine dust jacket with one tiny, closed edge tear at the heel. With publisher's review slip laid in. . First Edition. Hardcover.
