        A Confederacy Of Dunces

London: Allen Lane, 1981. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First UK Impression, one of only 1500 copies, with a foreword by Walker Percy. 8vo: xii,338pp. Publisher's parchment-colored paper-covered boards, spine lettered in gilt; illustrated dust jacket, repriced with publisher's sticker £7.95. A superlative copy (indeed As New) and yet another example of the value to be found in UK editions of American authors's works. This cult classic (and now mainstream success) first appeared eleven years after Toole's suicide, published through the efforts of Walker Percy and Toole's mother, earning Toole a posthumous Pulitzer Prize. The book's title is drawn from Jonathan Swift's essay Thoughts on Various Subjects, Moral and Diverting: "When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him." The book chronicles the "misadventures of Ignatius Jacques Reilly, an obese, lazy, obnoxious, opinionated, erudite, quixotic thirty-year-old medievalist who views himself as "an anachronism": he criticizes, and alienates himself from, the contemporary reality of 1960s New Orleans, preferring, in the "Miltonic isolation" of his bedroom, an idealized medieval world view inspired by Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy and determined by Fortuna, the goddess of fortune." the misadventures of Ignatius J. Reilly, a lazy, obese, misanthropic, self-styled scholar who lives at home with his mother in the Uptown neighborhood of early 1960s New Orleans." (Literary Encyclopedia) Toole wrote the novel in 1963, during his final few months in Puerto Rico. The novel has sold some 1.5 million copies and has been translated into more than 20 languages. Toole is now widely regarded as a gifted prose stylist who has immortalized the eccentricity of New Orleans. N. B.         Little Mama Sarah Stories and Pictures by Fan Crow

(Austin, Texas: Printed by David Holman of the Wind River Press for Roger Beacham, 1981), 1981. First edition, one of twelve copies (of an edition of 100 copies) hand-colored by Barbara Holman. OCLC records ten copies, eight of which are in Texas libraries; the two other wayward copies are in Missoula PL and Occidental College; LC also surely has an example. Fine copy in a decorated paper dust jacket.. Folio, blue-green cloth, printed labels on the spine and upper board. 34 pages + colophon leaf. Hand-colored illustrations. A whimsical book for children. A letter from the publisher laid in states "This work is unlike any other book we have experienced. It certainly doesn't have any 'Western Americana' feeling. It has a child like - one might say a rather naive quality to its overall effect. / David [Holman] took the illustrations & created the book. And Barbara has made it come to life with a broad array of luminous colors . . . / Sincerely / Bill Holman." The printed part of the colophon states "100 copies / printed by David Holman using hand-set Univers type." Below that is David Holman's signature with the notation "One of Twelve Copies hand colored by Barbara Holman / No. 4."

        Midnight’s Children

NY: Knopf, (1981) - New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1981. First edition of the author’s Booker Prize-winning novel, also acclaimed as the Booker of Bookers. Fine (but for a previous owner quite small name and address on the front free endpaper) in a fine dust jacket with the ubiquitous standard sunning to the spine panel. A beautiful example. Midnight’s Children chronicles modern India through the lives of the one thousand and one children born within the country’s first hour of independence on August 15, 1947. “An extraordinary novel one of the most important to come out of the English-speaking world in this generation” (Robert Towers, The New York Times Book Review). Listed by Modern Library as one of the 100 greatest novels of the 20th century. A serious collectible example made even more special as this sharp Booker of Bookers First Edition is signed on the title page by Salman Rushdie. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Martin Bormann: Nazi in Exile

Seacaucus, NJ: Lyle Stuart, 1981. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Signed by Author. Signed first edition. 302pp. Original red cloth lettered in gilt with black paper-covered boards. Near Fine with slightly bumped corner in Very Good dust jacket with light edge wear and small closed tear near foot, indent from paperclip on front panel. Presentation copy inscribed to film producer and German-born Jewish emigree Sam Spiegel of Horizon Pictures Inc. on the front free endpaper. Manning explains in the typed, signed letter that is laid in that he is seeing if any film studios might interested in adapting the book. This was not to be: Manning, despite his reputation as a broadcast journalist and speechwriter, soon found the book either studiously ignored or ridiculed by the mainstream media, its publisher attacked by unknown assailants and both his legs broken, and his own son mysteriously murdered. Interest in the possible postwar whereabouts of Martin Bormann has persisted since then, some researchers claiming Manning has been vindicated. Signed copies of his work are rare.

Kurt Vonnegut Collection: Signed first editions and uncorrected proofs, including Palm Sunday, Deadeye Dick, Galapagos, Hocus Pocus, Timequake, Bagombo Snuff Box, and A Man without a Country

New York: G.P. Putnam, 1981. 1st edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. An extensive Kurt Vonnegut collection: 7 books in total including many signed first editions and uncorrected proofs, complete with self-portrait drawings by the author. The novels within this collection include: Palm Sunday. New York: Delacorte Press, 1981. "I believe that reading and writing are the most nourishing forms of meditation anyone has so far found. By reading the writings of the most interesting minds in history, we meditate with our own minds and theirs as well. This to me is a miracle" (Kurt Vonnegut, Palm Sunday). - First edition, first printing. SIGNED and INSCRIBED "For Don, Peace! Joy!" with SELF-PORTRAIT on front-free endpaper. Deadeye Dick. New York: Delacorte Press/Seymour Lawrence, 1982. "To the As-Yet-Unborn, to all innocent wisps of undifferentiated nothingness: Watch out for life. I have caught life. I have come down with life. I was a wisp of undifferentiated nothingness, and then a little peephole opened quite suddenly. Light and sound poured in. Voices began to describe me and my surroundings. Nothing they said could be appealed. They said I was a boy named Rudolf Waltz, and that was that. They said the year was 1932, and that was that. They said I was in Midland City, Ohio, and that was that. They never shut up. Year after year they piled detail upon detail. They do it still. You know what they say now? They say the year is 1982, and that i am fifty years old. Blah blah blah." - First edition, later (unspecified) printing. SIGNED and inscribed "Don! Hey!" with SELF PORTRAIT on front-free endpaper. Galapagos. New York: Delacorte Press/Seymour Lawrence, 1985. "YES, American culture is more smart than wise. But Kurt Vonnegut, that clown-poet of homesickness and Armageddon, might be the rare American writer who is both. He dances the witty and informed dances of the literary smart, but while he does, he casts a wide eye about, and he sees. He is a postmodern Mark Twain: grumpy and sentimental, antic and religious. He is that paradoxical guy who goes to church both to pray fervently and to blow loud, snappy gum bubbles at the choir." (Lorie Moore, on Kurt Vonnegut and Galapagos) . - Uncorrected proof of the first edition. SIGNED and INSCRIBED several times: inscribed "Peace Don! My Friend" with SELF-PORTRAIT on half title, SIGNED on title-page, and INSCRIBED "Peace and Plenty Again my Friend!" as well as "HA!" commentary next to prefatory quote on epigraph page. Hocus Pocus. New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1990. "Among the most original stylists in America today, Vonnegut vents his disgust and moral outrage with government and humanity and the entire universe in yet another scathing social/political/philosophical satire [...] The narrative is composed of short takes in which Hartke's thoughts skip between the inconsequential and the profound, giving Vonnegut occasion to interject interesting tidbits of information, scientific and historical and otherwise. The cumulative power of the novel is considerable, revealing Vonnegut at his fanciful and playful best." ( (Publisher's Weekly, on Hocus Pocus). - First edition. SIGNED and inscribed "Peace and Plenty, My Friend Don - Joy" with SELF PORTRAIT on front-free endpaper. Timequake. New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1997. "The real pleasure lies in Vonnegut's transforming his continuing interest in the highly suspicious relationship between fact and fiction into the neatest trick yet played on a publishing world consumed with the furor over novel versus memoir" (Valerie Sayer, New York Times Book Review). VONNEGUT'S FINAL NOVEL. - First edition. SIGNED and INSCRIBED "Peace and Plenty my Friend, Joy." with large SELF-PORTRAIT on half-title. Bagombo Snuff Box. New York: G. P Putnam's Sons, 1999. A collection of Kurt Vonnegut's previously unpublished short fiction, this collection persists as one of the most celebrated selection of short stories. - Limited first edition. SIGNED and INSCRIBED "Peace and Plenty My Friend" on front-free endpaper. A Man Without a Country. New York: Seven Stories Press, 2005 This essay collection is Vonnegut's final work; it is a comprehensive and highly acclaimed work that illuminates the author's markedly humanist opinions on politics and other contemporary issues. - First edition, seventh printing (as noted on copyright page). SIGNED with SELF PORTRAIT in bold blue ink on half-title. Provenance : From the collection of Don Olsen (to which these books are inscribed), Seattle architect and prolific bookman.

Everyone on set had to wear an ID card, and actors had to read the script behind closed doors. The film was shot mostly in chronological order, to produce as convincing an emotional development as possible. The shoot completed in 61 days, four days ahead of schedule. The title-page of this shooting script bears the same date as the front cover. Several of the leaves were updated during shooting, and are dated 8/26-9/8/81. 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' was directed by Steven Spielberg, written by Melissa Mathison, produced by Spielberg and Kathleen Keneedy, and starred Henry Thomas, Drew Barrymore, Dee Wallace, Peter Coyote, and Robert McNaughton. The film won four Oscars: Best Sound, Best Effects - Visual Effects (including Carlo Rambaldi), Best Effects-Sound Effects Editing, and Best Music-Original Score (by John Williams). It was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Writing-Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen, Best Cinematography, and Best Film Editing.

James Bond. The Paradise Plot. Original Comic Strip artwork, signed by the Illustrator.

Copyright, Glidrose 1981-2. A three strip panel, being board number 256 drawn in pen and ink on artboard, with pasteover sections of text. Twice SIGNED by John McLusky, firstlly beneath central illustration and again, to revese side, together with adoodled '007' motif, below his 6-linehand-written description. In a simple matt black frame, being glazed to both sides, displaying both front and back of board. Attractively presented. Fine condition. Overall dimensions 54 x 19 cms. Written by Jim Lawrence, 'The Paradise Plot' was first serialised in the Daily Express from August 1981-June 1982. It did not appear in a book-form edition until paired with 'Deathmask', published by Titan in 2008. This particular panel shows a key point in the story where Bond is about to investigate Project Polestar, based on the mysterious Estrellita Island in the West Indies. John McLusky is the original and most significant of the James Bond comic strip artists, contributing to over 50 story arcs between 1958 and 1983 and being responsible for portraying what many feel to be the 'Face of Bond' in 1958, drawn notably similar to Sean Connery, some four years prior to the actor landing the role! His original comic panels are hard to find, with many early examples suffering from damp whilst stored at the Daily Express.
