Photos In + Out City Limits: Boston ("photos In & Out City Limits: Boston")

New York City, NY: ULAE Incorporated(1981). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 70 pages. Retrospective collection of photographs on subject. The first of a planned series on American cities, the project ended with a companion volume on New York City. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. There is NO Hardcover Edition. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Robert Rauschenberg: Oversize-volume format. White softcovers with metallic-silver titles beautifully embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Robert Rauschenberg. Essay by Clifford Ackley. Matching white hard board slipcase. Printed on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Robert Rauschenberg's "Photos In + Out City Limits: Boston". The great artist's collection of black-and-white photographs on Boston. It is the partial fulfillment of his 30-year-old wish to photograph the entire United States, a project he never completed. Showcases his unique approach to photography as a process of discovery, selection, and assemblage of objects from everyday life. One of the least well-known facts about Rauschenberg is that he began his career as a photographer. He makes no distinction between his photography and his painting, and he brings the same acute eye to both. The photographs, like the paintings, are formally rigorous, sensuous, and piercing. His celebrated method of appropriating found images and objects to capture the fabric, tempo, and "feel" of modern life is photographically-inspired and characterizes his large body of work. The idea of appropriation is not unique to Rauschenberg. It is a central tenet of Surrealism and continues to be the latter Movement's enduring legacy. What makes Rauschenberg's work unique is the way he has "set in motion an interplay of shapes in which the human form is integrated to a rigorous yet flamboyant sense of design, pictures in which art and real life coincide" (Pontus Hulten). "A protean genius who showed America that all of life could be open to art. Rauschenberg didn't give a fig for consistency or curating his reputation; his taste was always facile, omnivorous, and hit-or-miss, yet he had a big-ness of soul and a richness of temperament that recalled Walt Whitman" (Robert Hughes). "Mine is the need to be where it will always never be the same again. Photography is the most direct communication of non-violent contacts" (Robert Rauschenberg). An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Rauschenberg collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in pencil by Robert Rauschenberg. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great art photography book. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Many copies available online have major flaws because the color white soils very easily. According to dealers who knew him, Rauschenberg basically stopped signing books in the 1990's. Signed copies still available online are vintage, not recent, and very few. A rare signed copy thus. 45 tritone plates. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. Presents Robert Rauschenberg's "Photographs". The artist's photographic work in its very first retrospective. One of the least well-known facts about Rauschenberg is that he began his career as a photographer. Furthermore, he makes no distinction between his photography and his painting. He has said that he brings the same pair of eyes to both. The photographs, like the paintings, are rigorous, acute, and sensuous. His celebrated method of appropriating "found" images and objects to capture the fabric, tempo, and "feel" of modern life is photographically-inspired and characterizes his large body of work. The idea of appropriation is not unique to Rauschenberg. It is a central tenet of Surrealism, and continues to be the latter Movement's enduring legacy. What makes Rauschenberg's work unique is the way he has "set in motion an interplay of shapes in which the human form is integrated to a rigorous yet flamboyant sense of design, pictures in which art and real life coincide" (Pontus Hulten). The photographs are presented in two parts: The first is the Series taken between 1945 and 1946, in such places as Tangiers, Rome, New York, and North Carolina. The second consists of photographs taken between 1979 and 1980, in Captiva Island (where he lived) as well as Boston, Atlantic City, Baltimore, and Charleston. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Robert Rauschenberg. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The signature brilliantly matches his facsimile signature on the DJ cover. This title is a great art photography book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First American Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Unlike most copies available online, it is not remainder-marked, all of the internal pages are in pristine condition, and the boards are not bumped. According to dealers who knew him, Rauschenberg basically stopped signing books in the 1990's. Signed copies still available online are vintage, not recent, and very few. Er malte im Rahmen einer späten Neusachlichkeit. Dies gilt auch für seine anderen Motive wie Bilder aus den Alpen, Landschaftsstudien, Stilleben.         The Complete EC Library: Shock Suspenstories (3 Volume Boxed Set)

Russ Cochran, 1981. Hard Cover. VF - Very Fine. Various. 3 Volume Slipcased set. Published originally by William M. Gaines. When Shock SuspenStories appeared in 1951 it was designed as a showcase title with examples of EC's (Entertaining Comics) crime, horror & science fiction stories. The second issue featured a shock story designed to provoke a reaction, In Gratitude. In subsequent issues, these "preachies" as publisher William M. Gaines liked to call them, dealt with race relations, rape, bigotry, hazing & all manner of formerly taboo subject. These stories lift Shock SuspenStories into the upper echelons of EC's output. Whilst not a horror Comic, two issues of Entertaining Comic's (EC) Crime SuspenStories were the subject of US Senate Committees investigations. The crowbar murder Issue (#23) & its predecessor, the notorious severed head cover. As the investigating Senator Kefauver said at the time “You have blood coming out of her mouth.” After publisher William M. Gaines coy admission, Kefauver continued "There is blood on the axe. I think most adults are shocked by that." With Russ Cochran's Complete Crime SuspenStories you can enjoy all of these graphic masterpieces, illustrated by Johnny Craig, Jack Kamen, Graham “Ghastly” Ingels, Jack Davis, Reed Crandall & several other top-flight illustrators from the EC stable. There is also an adaptation of a Ray Bradbury short story in issue #9 (The October Game). There are several late stories by one of the masters of visual story telling, Berni Krigstein. Whilst Al Williamson's artistry was demonstrated in two stories, the second assisted by Frank Frazetta (Fired! #17). There are also the stark yet oddly beautiful covers of Johnny Craig, which will linger and play in the imagination. Each book is smyth sewn and deluxe bound to last a lifetime of re-reading. Very Fine condition with only minor shelf-wear to slipcase. Black & White illustrations. 10" x 13" (25cm x 33cm). Slipcase.

( Artikelnummer 15769 )

        Martin Bormann: Nazi in Exile

Lyle Stuart 1981 - Signed first edition. 302pp. Original red cloth lettered in gilt with black paper-covered boards. Near Fine with slightly bumped corner in Very Good dust jacket with light edge wear and small closed tear near foot, indent from paperclip on front panel. Presentation copy inscribed to film producer and German-born Jewish emigree Sam Spiegel of Horizon Pictures Inc. on the front free endpaper. Manning explains in the typed, signed letter that is laid in that he is seeing if any film studios might interested in adapting the book. This was not to be: Manning, despite his reputation as a broadcast journalist and speechwriter, soon found the book either studiously ignored or ridiculed by the mainstream media, its publisher attacked by unknown assailants and both his legs broken, and his own son mysteriously murdered. Interest in the possible postwar whereabouts of Martin Bormann has persisted since then, some researchers claiming Manning has been vindicated. Signed copies of his work are rare.
