Lettre autographe signée à l'écrivain Christian Maurel [2 août 1981]

Lettre. Très bon. Couverture souple.

FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH: A TRUE STORY (Inscribed Association Copy)

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1981. First Edition. Near Fine/Very Good +. The debut novel of one of the great writer/directors of modern cinema. Book is Near Fine with toning to board edges otherwise clean. Dust jacket is Very Good+ with minor bends and wrinkles, but no rips, tears or missing chips. The author, employed by Rolling Stone magazine, posed as a student and enrolled in high school at age 21. His experiences were the basis for Rolling Stones articles as well as this comedic, coming-of-age novel, from which the 1982 film was adapted. & & And here's where it gets interesting, that movie had an all-star cast, including: Jenifer Jason Leigh, Brian Backer, Phoebe Cates, Robert Ramanus, Sean Penn, Judge Reinhold, Nicolas Cage and Forest Whitaker, among others. This book is dated November 17, 1981 and is inscribed to Robert Romanus as follows: "Dear Bob - Talking about a book, traveling around the country on a 'promo tour' - it gives you a deep appreciation for the few people who really GET IT. Needless to say, you understand this book - and before you put me out of business with your own writing, thanks for helping bring this story to life . . . from whence it came. Isn't this great? Your friend, Cameron P.s. No checks." In addition, Romanus has written a note describing how Cameron gave him the copy to read prior to shooting the movie and that he asked Cameron to sign it while they were shooting the "great iced-tea" scene at Stacy's House. A wonderful association and a warm, early inscription. Near Fine in Very Good +. dust jacket.

A Leaf from the Letters of St. Jerome First Printed by Sixtus Reissinger, Rome, C.1466 - 1467 [Leaf Book]

Los Angeles and London: Zeitlin & Ver Brugge - H.M. Fletcher 1981, edition limited to 300 copies. () [vi], 30pp. Fine. Folio. Quarter vellum over marbled boards. Vellum spine label with gilt title. Lightest of shelfwear to corners. The original leaf is contained in a paper folder bound before the half-title. The leaf has some age toning and old water damage, but is quite striking, printed in two columns with very wide margins. Limited to 300 numbered copies, this being #27. An attractive, letter-press book containing a leaf from St. Jerome's Epistolae Hieronymi, likely one of the first few, if not the very first, book printed in Rome. The evidence, collected and explained herein, indicated that Epistolae Hieronymi was printed in 1466, shortly after Reissinger and another printing house, Sweynheim and Pannartz, established their presses. The leaf offered her represents an excellent example of a very early incunable and is from the editio princeps of the Letters of St. Jerome, one of the greatest collections of literary letters in the Western canon. A very good or better copy in dustwrapper. 8vo., 396pp. Extraordinary Family Copy signed on the title page & inscribed by Findley to his father" For Father with much love / Tiff". His father has decorated the front pastedown with a coloured portrait of Queen Mary & has added a full page commentary about the novel on the front fly: "...Tiff has written one of the greatest pyrotechnic displays ever seen against the twilit skies of English literature... / Dad". A wonderful copy of this very highly regarded novel which explores the difference between truth & lies, fact & fictions. $7500.00 "Like its 1977 predecessor The Wars, Timothy Findley's 1981 Famous Last Words ruthlessly examines the (often violent) nature of social division and union, as well as the making of history. Together these two novels mark the peak of Findley's career. While the slim Wars focuses largely on a single Canadian soldier in the First World War, Famous Last Words observes the next war--sometimes in the wings, sometimes from a distant office--through expatriate American writer Hugh Selwyn Mauberley. The title character in a well-known poem by the infamous Ezra Pound ("born / In a half savage country-- / Bent resolutely on wringing lilies from the acorn"), Mauberley gives Findley a focus point for his forceful moral questions. Can bad people produce good art? (Good anything?) Are actions really excused by explanations? - Darryl Whetter. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

        Cetacea, The Great Whale

Easthampton, MA: Cheloniidae Press, [1981]. Hard Cover. Fine. Hard Cover. Number 23 of 100 copies, signed by the artist (Alan James Robinson), binders (David Bourbeau and Gray Parrot), and printer (Harold Patrick McGrath). The total issue was 110 copies including 10 artists' proofs. This copy includes an autographed letter signed from Robinson to Joel Bernstein written on card printed by Robinson with a whale wood engraving. Also included is an original water color of Bernstein's "favorite" whale species which Robinson has included to thank him for his patience while waiting for the edition to be completed. The prospectus is laid in. & "Roaming the seas in the course of their yearly migration, these largest of creatures ever known to inhabit our water planet have been held in fear and affection, awe and fascination by humankind. As a result, whales are an integral part of our oral, written and artistic history. The oldest known detailed drawings of whales were found in caves in Norway and date back to at least 4000 BC. The publication of this portfolio thus expands upon a 6000 year old tradition depicting whales as the subject of human focus and expression" (Thomas B. Grooms). & The artist Alan Robinson is also a master printer who established the Cheloniidae Press, later called The Press of the Sea Turtle, in 1979. The press has published 27 letterpress books. This book includes seven striking bleed etchings by Robinson which depict twelve major species of whales including the Bowhead, Beluga, Killer, Blue, Sperm, Minke, Finback, Humpback, Gray, Sei, Narwhal, and Right Whale. Each etching is accompanied by a page of text detailing biological information about the species and a two-color map showing migration routes and breeding areas. The title page and colophon feature wood engravings and there are blind stamped line-cuts of whales along the margins of the text on several pages. The etchings, each of which are signed by the artist were printed by him at the Cheloniidae Press. The text and wood engravings were printed by Harold Patrick McGrath at the Hampshire Typothetae. There are tissue guards for each print and blue patterned end pages. The illustrations and text are loose as issued and are housed in an oblong folder. The front panel and spine of the folder are covered in Niger oasis goat skin which has been sculpted with the head of a Right Whale in low relief by David Bourbeau of the Thistle Bindery. Heavy item, may incur additional shipping costs for international delivery. , David Jones (1895-1974) is best known as a poet and a painter. His education included four years (1910-1914) at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and from there he enlisted as a private in the Welch Fusiliers and was wounded on the Somme. After the war he converted to Catholicism and went to work under Eric Gill, first at Ditchling and then at Capel-y-ffin. For a time Jones was engaged to one of Gill's daughters but she called off the engagement. Jones never would marry, his absorption in his work making such a relationship near impossible, but he maintained a circle of friends who were devoted to him, including Douglas Cleverdon and Robert Gibbings, owner of the Golden Cockerel Press. Jones had an intensity that perhaps underlies the brilliance of his work and which may have also contributed to his several breakdowns, but it is that intensity that made one of the foremost engravers of his generation. , 4to 11" - 13" tall, x + 58 [2] + 96 leaves pp .

THE DIARY OF ANAIS NIN. Volume 7: 1966-1974. Signed

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Jovanovich, 1981 Nin, Anais. THE DIARY OF ANAIS NIN. Volume 7: 1966-1974. New York: Harcourt, Brace & Jovavich, 1981. First Edition; First Printing. 8vo., 432pp. A fine copy in like dustwrapper. An excellent TLS tipped to the front free endpaper. [Anais Nin] Rupert Pole. TLS to Henry Miller, Oct 23rd 1979 8vo., on their printed letterhead with monogram. Signed "Rupert". Great content about Vol 7 of the diaries which is approaching a major deadline requiring miller to review the part related to himself & to give his OK, etc. Nice letter. There is a photo [not included] of Anais Nin & Rupert Pole, holding their poodle, Piccola, at their home in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles. Mr. Pole, who erroneously believed Nin was divorced when their relationship began, hoped the house would help entice Nin to stay instead of returning to her other husband. (1963 Photo By Christian Dubois Larsen Via Los Angeles Times). Rupert Pole, the husband of Anais Nin was guardian of the diarist's erotic literary legacy. For many years, Nin was married at the same time to Mr. Pole & to a banker in New York, Hugh "Hugo" Guiler. She & Mr. Pole divorced but continued to live together until her death in 1977. After her death, Mr. Pole oversaw the publication of four unabridged volumes of her erotic journals, which detail her affairs with such men as Henry Miller, psychoanalyst Otto Rank and her own father, Spanish composer Joaquin Nin. Seven previous volumes, which had been purged of much of the salacious material - as well as most references to her husbands - had established Nin as a cult figure, revered by many in the women's movement for her embrace of sexual freedom & exploration of the female psyche. The uncensored diaries overseen by Mr. Pole introduced Nin's work to a broader audience. Provenance: The Henry Miller Archive.. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.
