[Winston-Salem, NC]: Palaemon Press Limited, (December 1981). First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good and quite uncommon. Bound in full blue cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. Prints Carter's 9-page farewell address on heavy paper. Copy #105 of only 300 printed and SIGNED by the former President as "Jimmy Carter" on the title page. Half of the edition was reserved for Carter; the other half was issued for sale by the publisher. Quite possibly the most difficult Carter title to find and a poorly made book. Of the half dozen copies we have examined over the years, all were loosely stitched in their casings causing the text block to slide up and down. This copy is no different. In addition at the bottom outside corner of the rear cover is a small hole, @1/8" x 1/4", caused by insect damage. It seems that not all copies were issued with a slipcase; in any case this copy does not have one. Still a most collectible copy of a difficult book to locate.

Russian Army Soldier's Photo Album and Scrapbook

[Russia: n.p., c. 1980s.]. Minor tearing and edgewear to some pages, else near fine in plush boards, with light soiling to the front and rear panels.. Unique photo album and scrapbook, featuring original artwork, titled "730 Soldier Days" by the author. Collection comprises over one hundred portraits and candid photographs of Soviet military life, from 1981 to 1983 in the city of Ivanovo (158 lmiles from Moscow) where the soldier was stationed in the radio and technology department. Most portraits are signed or inscribed to the author of the album. Original pen and color pencil cartoons and tracings, depicting soldier life, drawn on the tissue guards. Several pages are covered with colorful swathes of felt, with cut-out felt letters, numbers, and other designs fixed to the surface. A series of postcards, showcasing Soviet Russian scenery and industry have been adhered to the pages in the form of collage; an additional twelve postcards and one photograph have been laid into the album. With his acute design sensibility, the author could have established a successful career as a graphic artist after his discharge from the army; this album exemplifies his exceptional skill for compelling composition and illustration.

New York, [6 October 1981]. Letter. Normal creases from mailing. Near Fine with wonderful content. Two pages with envelope on Parker Meridien Hotel letterhead to Fred Martin of New Directions. In part: "Very regrettably Mitch Douglas didn't let you know that I was not releasing 'Now the Cats with Jewelled Claws' but holding it back for rewrites of a considerable nature and all quite essential. This play was written while I was quite ill in the sixties and the fact is embarrassingly [sic] evident in the text, especially as I read it in print. I'm afraid that everything about my professional relationship with Douglas was regrettable.... I am a slow and consientious [sic] writer if permitted to be. Not an electric rabbit at a dog race. Of course these misapprehensions are finally set right. I've done two verysions [sic] of 'Clothes' since the one thrown with such cavalier haste onto Broadway. SIGNED as "Tennessee." In holograph: "Please remember me to Jay [James Laughlin, founder of New Directions] who introduced me to the 'world of Letters.' I never want him to be ashamed of a work of mine that bears the N.D. imprimateur [sic]." And in another color ink and likely added at the last minute: "P.P.S. There is also a now definitive "Red Devil Battery Sign"-- a controversial but major work.

Lettre. Très bon. Couverture souple.

      A. & P. Gonin, Lausanne 1981. (Giroud 72)
