Chinese Porcelain Collections in the Near East: three volumes in case Topkapi and Ardebil

Hong Kong University, 1981 - Three quarto hardcover volumes, frontispiece, xi, 1000pp., 84 colour and 424 monochrome plates, maps, bibliography, index. Black cloth boards with white titling. All in fine condition encased in a slightly scuffed, blue clip-up cloth covered bookcase with cream peg fasteners and white decoration and lettering. The introductory volume together with that on the collections of Chinese porcelain from the Topkapi Sarayi in Istanbul and the Ardebil Shrine in Tehran were first published in 1972 in a three volume Japanese limited edition, now out of print. Volume one broadly outlines the history of porcelain in China, the trade routes, the foreign influence on blue and white porcelain along with its design and stylistic characteristics. Volumes two and three give details of individual pieces and wares in the Topkapi and Ardebil collections (many of these are presented as tipped-in images). From the eighth century onwards Chinese porcelain has been exported along overland routes across Iran, Turkey, the Silk Road and even into Russia as well as the sea routes both in Southeast Asia and from ports in Africa to the Black Sea. These wares were valued as symbols of authority and status and collected by appreciative users. The collections at Topkapi and Ardebil date back to the mid fourteenth century. The background, origins, stylistic techniques and decoration is analysed by the author. The Yuan dynasty saw the rapid development in China of the Persian techniques of blue and white decoration, but applied to existing Chinese designs. The cobalt pigment often referred to in Chinese sources as Mohammedan blue had the advantage that it could be applied with comparative ease and this made possible the use of the high firing temperatures above 1300 degrees C required to produce fine porcelain without loss of colour. The demands of Arab traders for particular styles of pottery were of great influence at this time along with the export of cobalt from the Middle East and Africa. The author discusses in detail the design characteristics of the porcelain both in terms of dating as well as artistic expression. Chinese blue and white porcelain was a medium for the expression of artistic, social, historical and religious beliefs as well as displaying foreign influences and elements from its early Buddhist, Islamic, Persian and Arab associations such as the lotus, Arabic script and abstract designs. Well organised and brilliantly researched.

Robert Crumb. Sketchbooks 1982-2011 (volumes 7 -12) (Signed) (Limited Edition)

Taschen, 2012. Hard Cover. New. Robert Crumb. SIX BOOK BOXED SET limited to just 1,000 copies worldwide with signed color art print. First Edition. This six-book boxed set is the first collection of Robert Crumb sketches to be printed from the original art since the hard-bound, slipcased, seven volume series issued by the German publisher Zweitausendeins between 1981 and 1997. Unlike the Zweitausendeins edition, which included every doodle ever made by the preeminent underground artist, this best-of edition has been personally edited by the notoriously picky artist to include only what he considers his finest work, including hundreds of late period drawings not published in previous sketchbook collections. Robert Crumb requested that the books representing the second half of his career be published first due to fan demand for new Crumb material (Volume 1 covers the period 1982-2011, and Volume 2 covers the period 1964-1981). In the last 20 years Crumb's artistic output has slowed considerably, making new works more rare and highly prized. This collection of over 600 unseen drawings created between 1996 and 2011 makes this a must-have collectible for every Crumb fan. The slipcased set is made with loving attention to detail in a size and format selected by the artist. Each book in the boxed set contains 224 pages, for a total of 1,344 pages of prime Crumb. The set includes a hand-written introduction, and marbleized page edges from a design created by the artist. Each set of this 1,000-copy limited edition also includes a signed color art print of a Crumb original. 1344 pages. Full Colour illustrations. 8" x 11" (203mm x 279mm).

Berlin (später Berlin, Heidelberg, New York), Springer Verlag, 1920 – 1981. Spanking the Maid. Red Satin Bound Limited Edition of 95, with Fair Copy page tipped in

Bruccoli Clark, Bloomfield Hills, MI [Columbia, SC] 1981 - Bloomfield Hills, MI and Columbia, SC: Bruccoli Clark, 1981. First Edition. Illustrated by Erica (Rikki) Ducornet. Quarto, 53 pp. As new, pristine and flawless. The special signed, limited edition - of 95 copies only - in cushioned red silk fine binding, gilt imprinting, Artemis paper, marbled endpapers, and with a page of Coover's own fair-copy handwritten manuscript tipped in on the verso of the half-title. Not to be confused with the larger limited run of 505 copies, this one is definitely meant for display; a stunning visual treat. Coover's often [and usually humorously] misunderstood farce-masterpiece of soft erotica and allegory, in its most collectible form; buy the trade issue if you want to read it. Visual sumptuousness of the book itself befits the character of the tale, and soft, symbolic illustrations by Rikki (Erica Ducornet) carry the tone. Eye candy on the cocktail table, but cosset it between soirees. One of Daphne Merkin's favorite S/M books. L-19 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Shashinron (The Theory of Photography)

Toujusha 1981 - Interesting work by Araki on the theory of photography, including sections of particularly provocotive photographs to bring the points of the book home. Apparently, Araki personalized a number of copies of this work (first edition, second printings) with his signature, a short poem, and an illustration of a -- well, please refer to the picture in this listing for the subject of the illustration -- and sent the copies to his photography and professional contacts. While the book itself is not particularly rare in Japan, copies personalized to Araki's contacts in this matter are scarce. This copy in good condition inside and out; personalized to an insider in the publishing industry. Certainly, a must-have in any collection of Araki's work. Take it! 1-6 [Complete Run]

Boston, Massachusetts: Take It! Magazine. 1981-1982. A complete run of this short-lived but pioneering Boston-based magazine, including the elusive final issue. Folios and one quarto. Between 32pp. and 48pp. Illustrated self-wrappers, the quarto issue stapled. Fine. Created by Michael Koenig, with help from longtime music critic and independent music historian Byron Coley, Take It! covered the punk, hardcore, and newly emerging indy music scenes. Each issue included a flexi-disc with music from Dead Kennedys, Angry Samoans, The Trademarks, The Creamers, Yello, Renaldo and The Loaf, The Mutants, 1/2 Japanese, and Flipper. The run features articles, interviews, essays, and reviews from Richard Meltzer, John Holmstrom, Jonathan Borofsky, Gang of Four, Mission of Burma, Black Flag, Flesh Eaters, The Slits, The Psychedelic Furs, and many others. A nice run of this influential music magazine. .

(Manchester): Babylon Books, (1981). First Edition. Wraps. Very good +. 4to. Pictorial wraps. Offset printed. Some mild rubbing, edgewear. Very good plus or better overall. [44]pp. Published before the formation of The Smiths, Morrissey's first book consists of 8 pages of text by the singer followed by reproductions of Dolls photographs and press clippings. A direct outgrowth of articles Morrissey penned for various zines (among them KID'S STUFF and THE NEXT BIG THING), the future singer's "book- zine" appeared in 1981 from hometown publisher Babylon Books, a one-man operation headed by John Muir. Muir has claimed the book sold upwards of 3000 copies, but if that's so most of those were undoubtedly from a second printing done to take advantage of The Smith's growing popularity and likely coinciding with the similarly-motivated reprint of Morrissey's second book for Baby- lon, JAMES DEAN IS NOT DEAD (1983). Even accounting for this title's ephemeral production, however, with OCLC recording just three copies worldwide (and *all* of those a 1995 reprint), we strongly suspect Muir's claims are inflated. It would be difficult to overstate the Doll's influence on Morrissey’s development as an artist. He was the president of their UK fan club; and their albums, performances, and perhaps most of all personae were foundational experiences for the young singer-songwriter. A book we've been looking for for almost ten years and the first we've seen offered in that time.

PHOTOS IN + OUT CITY LIMITS: BOSTON ("PHOTOS IN & OUT CITY LIMITS: BOSTON") - Rare Signed Copy of The First And Only Edition

New York City, NY: ULAE Incorporated, 1981 - 1st Printing. Signed. 70 pages. Published in 1981. Collection of photographs on subject. The first of a planned series on American cities, the project ended with a companion volume on New York City. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. There is no ISBN. The book is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Robert Rauschenberg: Oversize-volume format. White softcovers with metallic-silver titles beautifully embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Robert Rauschenberg. Essay by Clifford Ackley. Matching white hard board slipcase. Printed on thick uncoated stock paper in the United States to the very highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents the great artist's collection of black-and-white photographs on Boston, the partial fulfillment of his 30-year-old wish to photograph the entire United States, a project he never completed. Showcases his unique approach to photography as a process of discovery, selection, and assemblage of objects from everyday life. One of the least well-known facts about Rauschenberg is that he began his career as a photographer. He makes no distinction between his photography and his painting, and he brings the same acute eye to both. The photographs, like the paintings, are formally rigorous, sensuous, and piercing. His celebrated method of appropriating found images and objects to capture the fabric, tempo, and "feel" of modern life is photographically-inspired and characterizes his large body of work. The idea of appropriation is not unique to Rauschenberg. It is a central tenet of Surrealism and continues to be the latter Movement's enduring legacy. What makes Rauschenberg's work unique is the way he has "set in motion an interplay of shapes in which the human form is integrated to a rigorous yet flamboyant sense of design, pictures in which art and real life coincide" (Pontus Hulten). "A protean genius who showed America that all of life could be open to art. Rauschenberg didn't give a fig for consistency or curating his reputation; his taste was always facile, omnivorous, and hit-or-miss, yet he had a big-ness of soul and a richness of temperament that recalled Walt Whitman" (Robert Hughes). "Mine is the need to be where it will always never be the same again. Photography is the most direct communication of non-violent contacts" (Robert Rauschenberg). An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Rauschenberg collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in pencil by Robert Rauschenberg. This title is now highly collectible. This is one of few signed copies still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Many copies have major flaws because the color white soils very easily. According to dealers who knew him, Rauschenberg basically stopped signing books in the 1990's. Signed copies still available online are vintage, not recent, and very few. A rare signed copy thus. 45 tritone plates. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. Andy Warhol - Philippe. Photographies Originales.

[Attributes: First Edition]

For the Hundredth Time: Gabberjabb Number 5

Minor Confluence: Perishable Press. 1981. Selected as one of AIGA's 50 Best Books of the Year. One of 200 copies printed, this copy is inscribed by Hamady on the back cover: "This is a special copy for our friend ___ ____ there in Salisbury/ the cigar box label was given to me a long time ago (along with some cigar molds) by Paul Blackburn. If you subtract 14,500 from copy number you will see this is copy number five. All best, Walter the Hamady 15 VIII 81." Laid in is an autograph note signed by Hamady from Labor Day of the same year; in part: "Your words do cheer me up in a world that seems so bossy & indifferent." Approximately 50 words, written on the back of a postcard, but mailed in an envelope (included). Both the book and the letter are fine. Hamady's Interminable Gabberjabb series, begun in 1973 and comprising eight books by its end in 2005, is considered to have "changed the face of contemporary book arts in the United States" (Univ. of Arizona Poetry Center). Number 5 is considered by some to be one of the finest in the series, in its playfulness and the variety of its collage elements, which contrast with and complement the very serious content pertaining to his relief at his wife's return from the hospital after successful surgery. The Gabberjabbs collectively challenge the "reader" to slow down, discard the usual assumptions and attitudes toward the printed work, and engage the material in a manner that is interactive and collaborative: one feels almost as though one is creating the book as one reads it -- a conceit carefully engendered by the author. Since the books were created from the leftover materials from Hamady's other projects, each copy tends to be unique in some fashion. Gabberjabbs were recognized quickly for their importance and the small print runs quickly disappeared. OCLC locates 57 copies of Number 5, an extraordinarily high number for a book with such a small limitation. Copies seldom turn up on the market, let alone copies that are annotated by the author, as this one is, with the additional inserted letter as well as the original 1981 invoice for the subscriber's purchase. A fine copy of a landmark artist's book, and a rarity in the market. First Edition. Hardcover.
