Typed Letter Signed to Amiri Baraka [with] Typed Manuscript Signed of McClure's "Poem by Amiri Baraka from a dream"

One page Typed Letter Signed ("Miguel") to Amiri Baraka. Old folds from mailing else about fine with original envelope postmarked in 1981. An interesting letter, McClure celebrates the fact that Baraka is out of jail, and then later, in part: "The other night - the night of the Summer Solstice - Joanna and I were sleeping out under the stars on the porch and I dreamed that I was typing a poem of yours. It was a really gorgeous (as most of yours are) piece and it had a column of sounds running down the side. When I got up in the morning the shape of the poem was very clear in my mind and I began typing what I saw. Here 'tis." McClure goes on to relate a similar dream about a broadside poem by Philip Whalen. [With] One page Typed Manuscript Signed ("Michael McClure") of the poem in question. Old mailing folds, else fine. The 46-line poem was later published in McClure's Fragments of Perseus in 1983 by New Directions. .

Chinese Porcelain Collections in the Near East: three volumes in case Topkapi and Ardebil

Hong Kong University, 1981 - Three quarto hardcover volumes, frontispiece, xi, 1000pp., 84 colour and 424 monochrome plates, maps, bibliography, index. Black cloth boards with white titling. All in fine condition encased in a slightly scuffed, blue clip-up cloth covered bookcase with cream peg fasteners and white decoration and lettering. The introductory volume together with that on the collections of Chinese porcelain from the Topkapi Sarayi in Istanbul and the Ardebil Shrine in Tehran were first published in 1972 in a three volume Japanese limited edition, now out of print. Volume one broadly outlines the history of porcelain in China, the trade routes, the foreign influence on blue and white porcelain along with its design and stylistic characteristics. Volumes two and three give details of individual pieces and wares in the Topkapi and Ardebil collections (many of these are presented as tipped-in images). From the eighth century onwards Chinese porcelain has been exported along overland routes across Iran, Turkey, the Silk Road and even into Russia as well as the sea routes both in Southeast Asia and from ports in Africa to the Black Sea. These wares were valued as symbols of authority and status and collected by appreciative users. The collections at Topkapi and Ardebil date back to the mid fourteenth century. The background, origins, stylistic techniques and decoration is analysed by the author. The Yuan dynasty saw the rapid development in China of the Persian techniques of blue and white decoration, but applied to existing Chinese designs. The cobalt pigment often referred to in Chinese sources as Mohammedan blue had the advantage that it could be applied with comparative ease and this made possible the use of the high firing temperatures above 1300 degrees C required to produce fine porcelain without loss of colour. The demands of Arab traders for particular styles of pottery were of great influence at this time along with the export of cobalt from the Middle East and Africa. The author discusses in detail the design characteristics of the porcelain both in terms of dating as well as artistic expression. Chinese blue and white porcelain was a medium for the expression of artistic, social, historical and religious beliefs as well as displaying foreign influences and elements from its early Buddhist, Islamic, Persian and Arab associations such as the lotus, Arabic script and abstract designs. Well organised and brilliantly researched.

Robert Crumb. Sketchbooks 1982-2011 (volumes 7 -12) (Signed) (Limited Edition)

Taschen, 2012. Hard Cover. New. Robert Crumb. SIX BOOK BOXED SET limited to just 1,000 copies worldwide with signed color art print. First Edition. This six-book boxed set is the first collection of Robert Crumb sketches to be printed from the original art since the hard-bound, slipcased, seven volume series issued by the German publisher Zweitausendeins between 1981 and 1997. Unlike the Zweitausendeins edition, which included every doodle ever made by the preeminent underground artist, this best-of edition has been personally edited by the notoriously picky artist to include only what he considers his finest work, including hundreds of late period drawings not published in previous sketchbook collections. Robert Crumb requested that the books representing the second half of his career be published first due to fan demand for new Crumb material (Volume 1 covers the period 1982-2011, and Volume 2 covers the period 1964-1981). In the last 20 years Crumb's artistic output has slowed considerably, making new works more rare and highly prized. This collection of over 600 unseen drawings created between 1996 and 2011 makes this a must-have collectible for every Crumb fan. The slipcased set is made with loving attention to detail in a size and format selected by the artist. Each book in the boxed set contains 224 pages, for a total of 1,344 pages of prime Crumb. The set includes a hand-written introduction, and marbleized page edges from a design created by the artist. Each set of this 1,000-copy limited edition also includes a signed color art print of a Crumb original. 1344 pages. Full Colour illustrations. 8" x 11" (203mm x 279mm).

[Glasgow: D. Bryce & Son, c1906]. ?The [miniature] Koran is another almost legendary title published by Bryce...During World War I many copies were issued to Muslim soldiers fighting with the Allied troops and were often regarded as talismans. Lately it has become increasingly difficult to find copies of this book which thirty years ago was so common that an oriental bookseller of my acquaintance had an entire drawer full of them...The great economic, political and spiritual revival which has taken place in the Arab world may perhaps account for the present scarcity and have led to the absorption of most of the remaining copies.? (Bondy, 1981) Bondy p. 111. 2.7 x 1.8 cm. Arabic text. unpaginated. india-paper. title within decorated border. headpieces & marginal decorations. contemporary gilt-stamped limp brown morocco, kept in original metal locket (3.3 x 2.7 x 1.2 cm.) with inset magnifying glass in upper lid (metal locket rusty & not closing)

Spanking the Maid. Red Satin Bound Limited Edition of 95, with Fair Copy page tipped in

Bruccoli Clark, Bloomfield Hills, MI [Columbia, SC] 1981 - Bloomfield Hills, MI and Columbia, SC: Bruccoli Clark, 1981. First Edition. Illustrated by Erica (Rikki) Ducornet. Quarto, 53 pp. As new, pristine and flawless. The special signed, limited edition - of 95 copies only - in cushioned red silk fine binding, gilt imprinting, Artemis paper, marbled endpapers, and with a page of Coover's own fair-copy handwritten manuscript tipped in on the verso of the half-title. Not to be confused with the larger limited run of 505 copies, this one is definitely meant for display; a stunning visual treat. Coover's often [and usually humorously] misunderstood farce-masterpiece of soft erotica and allegory, in its most collectible form; buy the trade issue if you want to read it. Visual sumptuousness of the book itself befits the character of the tale, and soft, symbolic illustrations by Rikki (Erica Ducornet) carry the tone. Eye candy on the cocktail table, but cosset it between soirees. One of Daphne Merkin's favorite S/M books. L-19 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Paul Outerbridge. A Singular Aesthetic: Photographs and Drawings 1921-1941. A Catalogue Raisonne

Arabesque Books 1981 - Santa Barbara, CA: Arabesque Books, 1981. (12.25 x 9.5 in, 31.2 x 24.5 cm). Limited to 1500 deluxe copies hardbound, mounted and matted photograph on upper panel (see images) and with a printed acetate dust jacket. Introductory essay by Bernard Barryte. Also included "The Carbro Process" by Paul Outerbridge. Profusely illustrated with both black and white and color photographs. A beautiful production in fine condition, uncommon thus. Original cloth covered boards with title printed on panel mounted to spine and matted color reproduction mounted to the upper panel (in fine, as new condition, internally and externally); original printed somewhat frosted acetate dust jacket (fine condition with only very minimal rubbing and an 8cm scratch on the lower panel). A beautifully preserved copy. "The three dimensional front cover of this volume with its mounted hinged mat displays one of Outerbridge's most famous Carbro-color prints, "Woman with Claws". With the hinged mat lifted, that part of the original image subsequently edited out by Outerbridge can be examined, allowing the viewer to study the aesthetic of Outerbridge's editorial process. His original intention was to objectify the model, evidenced by the mask; however, the full intention was not achieved until the final presentation-the overmatting." A fine copy of the deluxe edition of the Paul Outerbridge catalogue raisonne. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
