The Maps and Text of the Boke of Idrography presented by Jean Rotz to Henry VIII now in the British Library. Edited by Helen Wallis with a Foreword by Viscount Eccles

Oxford: Roxburghe Club, 1981. Large folio, with a coloured illustration on the title, 16 double-page coloured plates, and 11 illustrations in the text; original brown half-morocco, top edges gilt; a fine copy. FINISHED. Dieppe school: the Rotz atlas. First edition: one of only 200 copies for sale, and long out of print. This was the first publication of the Roxburghe Club to be offered for general sale outside the club's very exclusive membership. This is a magnificent production, reproducing in full colour Rotz's superb atlas of 1542, now in the British Library, with its celebrated charts of the coastlines of the world. Rotz's {i Boke }is the earliest surviving work of Dieppe hydrography to show "the Londe of Java", called by later Dieppe hydrographers "Java-la-Grande", and provides some of the strongest evidence in favour of an early Portuguese discovery of Australia, discussed by Helen Wallis in the Introduction ("Java-la-Grande: the first sight of Australia"). Rotz's life, times and works are also examined in detail and the plates are preceded by a transcription of the {i Boke}. Wallis's approach to the Dieppe maps and specifically to the issue of Java-la-Grande has been challenged, notably by W.A.R. Richardson in {i Was Australia Charted before 1606? The Jave La Grande Inscriptions} (National Library of Australia, 2006). Wallis provides one of the more sober approaches to a topic that has been a flypaper for crackpots (the well-named Trickett, one of many less than scholarly writers who have enthusiastically embraced the notion, even claimed in {i Beyond Capricorn }(Adelaide, 2007) that the Vallard map (see following item) showed Botany Bay so precisely that the Mascot runways could be drawn on it. From the Norman Wettenhall collection, with bookplate.

Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume V, Part 2, The Wilderness Years 1929 -1935

William Heinemann Ltd., London 1981 - The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - seventeen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. The Companion volumes for Volume V of the Official Biography are the most keenly sought and most prohibitive to acquire of all Official Biography volumes. There was only a single printing in England and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes - meaning that many Official Biography sets will forever do without. This is the second of the three Volume V Companions, a superlative copy of the British first edition, only printing. Condition is truly fine in a fine dust jacket. This is about as good as they come; the book appears unread. The red cloth binding is clean, tight, and square, showing virtually no wear and retaining a nicely rounded spine, sharp corners, and bright spine gilt. The contents are pristine. There is no sign of the looseness or gutter breaks that so often occur with this massive volume. There is no spotting and no previous ownership marks. The red topstain retains deep unfaded color. The fore and bottom edges are as clean and bright as the contents. The dust jacket is crisp, bright, and complete. There were two prices on the dust jacket flap - an original introductory price and then a higher price specified after 1 September 1981. Both prices are intact on this unclipped dust jacket. The spine print remains bright. We note no losses, tears, sunning, or soiling. Searching for flaws, we can report only a fractional hint of wrinkling at the bottom of the spine. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Please note that this large, heavy book may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302e2.         The Ultimate Good Luck [Review Copy]

Houghton Mifflin, Boston 1981 - A review copy of his second novel, a hard-boiled thriller involving American expatriates in Mexico. Signed by the author. Partly because of the weak construction at the rear hinge, which tends to crack, this title has become harder to locate, particularly in fine condition, than his first book. This copy has just a hint of the start of a crack at the lower rear joint and is otherwise fine in a very near fine dust jacket with one tiny, closed edge tear at the heel. With publisher's review slip laid in. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Typed Letter Signed to Amiri Baraka [with] Typed Manuscript Signed of McClure's "Poem by Amiri Baraka from a dream"

One page Typed Letter Signed ("Miguel") to Amiri Baraka. Old folds from mailing else about fine with original envelope postmarked in 1981. An interesting letter, McClure celebrates the fact that Baraka is out of jail, and then later, in part: "The other night - the night of the Summer Solstice - Joanna and I were sleeping out under the stars on the porch and I dreamed that I was typing a poem of yours. It was a really gorgeous (as most of yours are) piece and it had a column of sounds running down the side. When I got up in the morning the shape of the poem was very clear in my mind and I began typing what I saw. Here 'tis." McClure goes on to relate a similar dream about a broadside poem by Philip Whalen. [With] One page Typed Manuscript Signed ("Michael McClure") of the poem in question. Old mailing folds, else fine. The 46-line poem was later published in McClure's Fragments of Perseus in 1983 by New Directions. .
