Commencement. Kent State University, December 18, 1981

Kent, Ohio: Kent State University. 1981. First. First edition. Octavo. 42pp. Stapled illustrated wrappers. Slight age-toning on the wrappers, one pencil note in text, else very near fine. Commencement program that hides a literary hoax. On page 25, which lists the graduates from the University from the College of Arts and Sciences, the first listed of the six graduates in Geography is Nelson Springer Angstrom, the son of Rabbit Angstrom, both of whom existed only in the fertile mind of John Updike, who sent Nelson to Kent State in the third Rabbit book, Rabbit is Rich (1981). Updike corresponded with the assistant to the President of Kent State in order to gather details of the school for the book; the same employee was responsible for the University print shop, and awarded Nelson with a degree. Copy of a clipping detailing the hoax is laid in. Presumably missing from most Updike collections. OCLC locates a single run of the commencement program, but seems to lack any issues after 1963. .

The Jessup Dimension / Anna Genzlinger, 1981. Carlos Allende Annotated Copy. UFO

Clarksburg, WV: Saucerian Press, 1981 Good. See scans (some intentionally very reduced). Clarksburg, WV: Saucerian Press, 1981. First Edition. The Jessup Dimension / Anna Genzlinger, 1981. Carlos Allende Annotated Copy. Anna Lykins Genzlinger?s memorable account of her investigation into the still-controversial death of UFO researcher/writer Morris K. Jessup ?" a title so scarce and so seminal that it has just recently (2014) been re-published by Andy Colvin (Mothman Photographer, et al). This copy of the original 1981 first edition is thoroughly annotated by none other than Carlos Miguel Allende (Carl Meredith Allen / reputed), an eccentric and enigmatic figure from the second decade of the widening and evolving American cultural UFO interest (latter fifties to latter sixties, approximately); also accompanied by a wonderfully expressed letter of provenance from Genzlinger?s daughter. Octavo, design perfect-bound wraps, 163 + 1 pp. Good Only; covers are stained (see scans), and of course there are the profuse hand-inked Allende annotations - adversely affecting condition, but of course very positively affecting value. Still quite stoutly bound, as well. ?Carlos Miguel Allende? inserted himself into both the Philadelphia Experiment event (or non-event) ?" ref.: the 1984 movie of that name - and the Morris K. Jessup controversy itself, which is presumed to have stemmed from his book ?The Case For the UFO?. Both are linked because of their stated or presumed focus on a group of electromagnetic fringe-science directions ?" directions which are claimed by some to have caused what allegedly happened in the Philadelphia Experiment, and to include - somewhere in them - the means for interstellar travel. In 1957 UFO author Jessup was asked by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to analyze a number of intercommunicating three-color annotations in a copy of his book ?The Case for the UFO? that had been received by the ONR; the annotations presented as being by three entities, one self-named ?Jemi?, the other two designated ?Mr. A? and Mr. B? (by the ONR), and all three referring to themselves as ?Gypsies?. The annotations referred to two types of alien entities, among other things, largely remarks on points Jessup?s book. Jessup decided that Allende ?" from whom he had received communications that sounded similar ?" was the actual source of all those annotations, no doubt also partly from his tendency to annotate things, as he has here. The Navy actually did produce a small-run facsimile of the annotated book (by Varo Corp. of Texas), for internal distribution. Morris Jessup was found dead in April of 1959. Because he had been depressive, his death was ruled a suicide. Others, pointing to various suspicious circumstance, felt very differently. That suicide and what preceded it are the subject of this Anna Lykins Genzlinger landmark investigative book, The Jessup Dimension, of which this is the only known Allende-annotated copy. At the time ?" her researches were largely in the 3rd decade ?" not many UFOlogists wanted to involve themselves, in-depth, with a compound case involving the ONR, The Philadelphia Experiment, electromagnetic fringe researches and, especially, the (possible) murder of Jessup - an investigator involved in those very subjects. In short ?" Genzlinger was a bold, inquisitive pioneer into substance, at a time when people willing to do that in that field were in rather short supply. Things have been gradually changing since, but evidence fades. Carlos Miguel Allende / Carl Meredith Allen is largely thought of now, by many, as having been a mentally imbalanced eccentric. But some of the things he said, and some of the things he seemed to know and have familiarity with, and his passion and energy on a rather specific area of inquiry, give many folks unease about such a short and simple disposition of his identity. The presumed-by-some suicide of Dr. Morris K. Jessup only adds fuel to that still-unquenched fire. Please feel free to inquire in any regard. L19n

        Pictures from the New World

Millertown, NY: Aperture, 1981. FIRST TRADE EDITION, DANNY LYON?S OWN ANNOTATED COPY. ?This copy, Lyon's own, was sent to the former executive editor of Camera Arts, Fred Ritchen. Lyon's enclosed letter states, ?I?ve marked some pages which I think makes a good progression over the years, showing a change in subject and style... For the most part I have also marked pictures that are less well known, and often have only appeared in print in this book. Nothing was run by any magazines when the hard back was printed... P.S. I?ll need this particular copy back when you?re done, as it is my own; though I?m sure I can get you another from Aperture? (December 17, 1982). The resultant May 1983 issue of Camera Arts is included, as is a provenance letter by Tom Ridinger, co-founder of Camera Arts, stating this ?must be the rarest copy of Danny Lyon?s Pictures from the New World."Lyon critiques his most famous subject in this copy, scrawling, ?A BAD reproduction of my BEST picture Bike riders? (pg. 30). This copy features around a dozen pages with pencilled layout drawings and instructions, and over a dozen pages marked with Lyon?s original paper clips and sticky tabs.Danny Lyon was a twentieth-century photographic luminary who released Pictures from the New World in 1981 on the dynamic work of his past eighteen years. In the introduction he writes, ?In order to to make this book I have had to face directly everything I have done in photography... Now I give it back to you, America, from whom I took it all in the first place. The slate is clean, and I am free to begin again.??Among a group of revolutionaries whose work rose to prominence in the late 1960s and ?70s and transformed the nature of documentary photography -- a group that includes friends and colleagues of Mr. Lyon?s like Mary Ellen Mark and Larry Clark -- the idea of conscience has been imbedded more deeply in Mr. Lyon?s photographs than in those of all but a few of his contemporaries? (The New York Times April 24, 2009).The Focal Encyclopedia of Photography recounts,?He was self-taught as a photographer and his first images document the social struggle. It was a pattern to be repeated throughout his career -- to actively live with subgroups or participate with segments of society he would document. He became a member of a Chicago motorcycle gang, The Outlaws, before producing the book, The Bike Riders in 1968. Later he spent time with construction workers, stock care races, prison inmates, and peoples of the Third World to make his books and films? (pg. 268).Millertown, NY: Aperture, 1981. Oblong quarto, original cloth, original dust jacket; custom silk box. Text block sprung from binding; very clean text. Dust jacket with only a centimeter closed tear and light toning. Also with: a letter from Danny Lyon about this copy, an additional letter of provenance from Tom Ridinger, and associated magazine copy. A significant ensemble illustrating Lyon's own assessment of his work. Good / Very Good.

Bukowski's collection Erections, Ejaculations, Exhibitions and General Tales of Ordinary Madness was published in 1972; there wasn't a collection entitled Tales of Ordinary Madness until 1983. Ben Gazzara starred in the well-received film, which won a number of awards in Italy where it was made: the screenplay won a David di Donatello award, roughly the equivalent of the Oscar, and Marco Ferreri also won a Best Director David, as well as a Golden Goblet and Silver Ribbon for Best Director, Italy's other major cinema awards. This copy is signed by Bukowski on the front cover. Velobound, with gray cardstock covers and a typed label on the front cover. Near fine.         SKYSTONES [LAS PIEDRAS DEL CIELO]. POEMS DE PABLO NERUDA. [DUAL TEXT.]

(Easthampton. MA: Emanon Press, 1981. Edition bound by Gray Parrot in Fabriano over boards printed to a design by Debra Weier and brown leather trim, beige cloth clam. Emanon Press. 4to. Edition bound by Gray Parrot in Fabriano over boards printed to a design by Debra Weier and brown leather trim, beige cloth clam. Unpaginated. Translated by Ben Belitt. Limited to 60 numbered copies, signed by Ben Belitt, Debra Weier and Bill Bridgers. The signature of Pable Nerudo is embossed in relief above that of the collaborators. Designed by Debra Weier and William D. Bridgers. Handset in Virgin Bodoni Book by the artists and Bill Bridgers. Printed on Arches buff and Rives BFK tan, with one page of Japanese paper. Five two-plate color etchings printed on Rives BFK and Arches. "Four of Nerudas poems about the sky and earth were selected for this book and each of the poems rests inside its own multi-colored, two-plate, bleed etching textured by Weier. The flow of six signatures is realized through an extra etching, various color stencil rolls, type-high plates, collage and sculpted paper constructions. After many runs through the etching press and many more through the letterpress, after more than a year of meeting and talking with friends and advisors scattered among various states of mind and of America, after the inevitable delays of collecting type and paper, after waiting so long, this complex pop-up, fold-out, bilingual edition [was] completed ... in October, 1981." - from Prospectus. Skystones has become a very scarce book to find. It is a classic of contemporary good American Artists' Books.

Selected Poems [Signed by Elytis, by Keeley, and by Philip Sherrard; Douglas Fairbanks' Copy]: Chosen and Introduced by Edmund Keeley and Philip Sherrard

Anvil Press Poetry Ltd., 1981, Hardcover, Book Condition: Fine, Dust Jacket Condition: fine, First editionA Near Fine copy of the first UK edition, first printing, in a Very Good + or better dust jacket, SIGNED BY ODYSSEUS ELYTIS on the title page (using the Greek form of his full name rather than being merely signed "Elytis" as is the case in all but one of the other few signed copies of this book that we have seen). Odysseus Elytis (the pen name of Odysseus Alepoudhiéis) published his first poem at the encouragement of, among others, his friend George Seferis, winner of the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature, was soon thereafter himself praised as an important writer, and ultimately he too won the (1979) Nobel Prize in Literature "for his poetry, which, against the background of Greek tradition, depicts with sensuous strength and intellectual clear-sightedness modern man's struggle for freedom and creativeness". The Poems contained in this Volume were chosen by Edmund Keeley and Phillip Sherrard, the leading translators of modern Greek Poetry, who also provided the book's Introduction. Not only is this copy signed by Odysseus Elytis, but it also is SIGNED BY EDMUND KEELEY on the page immediately preceding the title page and is on the same page SIGNED BY PHILIP SHERRARD with his inscription to the famed actor Douglas Fairbanks from whose Estate this book came and whose bookplate resides on the front pastedown.Signed copies of Odysseus Elytis' works are quite scarce to the market, and signed copies of his trade editions, especially in English translation, are scarcer still.(At our last check, auction records revealed only 2 signed copies of his work having come to auction in the last 25 years, each a Limited Edition.) A Near Fine copy, SIGNED BY ODYSSEUS ELYTIS, also SIGNED BY EDMUND KEELEY, and further SIGNED and INSCRIBED BY PHILIP SHERRARD TO DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS; QUITE POSSIBLY THE BEST COPY OF THIS BOOK FOR A COLLECTOR TO HAVE. A remarkable copy.SCARCE/RARE.

OCLC locates a single run of the commencement program, but seems to lack any issues after 1963. .
