        De Kafka à Kafka

First Edition published only in paperback and for which he was not fired large paper copies of a press service. Touching and valuable autograph dedication signed by the author to his sister Marguerite glued on a card on the first guard: "Dear Marg, this book is not a book but if you put it in those dark days, my faithful, my deep affection. Maurice. " Envelope bearing the address of Marguerite Blanchot written by his brother Maurice glued on half-title page. Marguerite Blanchot, renowned organist Chalon Cathedral, remained all his life in the family home with his mother and aunt. "It will gradually become, for the family, as the memory of origins." Very close to Maurice, she regularly corresponded with the writer who reflects him great recognition for his dedication to their helpless mother. If intense affection Blanchot for his mother and his sister shines in dedications of it, we know almost nothing of their relationship. In the only biographical essay on Blanchot, Christophe Bident reveals, however: "Marguerite Maurice Blanchot worshiped his brother very proud of him, (...) it attached great importance to his political ideas (...) She read a lot (.... .) They phoned corresponded. A distance, they shared the same natural authority, the same concern for discretion. " Blanchot address him indeed many books from his library, now with her continuous intellectual link. A trace of marginal fold in the first flat foot. Nice copy. Gallimard Paris 1981 11x18cm broché

        Studley Royal Print Folio

New Arcadian Press 1981 - Subtitle: 'STUDLEY cannot fail of striking the spectator'. Thirty seven colour lithographs by Patrick Eyres (texts) and John Tetley (images) in hand-bound embossed folio (455 x 330 mm). Edition of 100 - this copy is no. 20. Signed in black ink by both authors. The folio comprises text and image documentation of the Augustan garden that encompasses the ruins of Fountains Abbey. Fifteen landscape images by Tetley (using a mixture of drawing, etching and photography) and 22 poem-texts serve as a discourse not only on the pastoral 18th century garden (now restored) - but also the darker past of the garden: the feudal abuse of the estate workers, for example. Eyres¿s texts are largely compiled from 18th century sources, particularly from the estate archives' correspondence accounts. New Arcadian Press (publisher of New Arcadian Journal) is dedicated to landscape theory - this being their most substantial and rarest production. Condition: minor bumps to corners of hardcover folio resulting in some small scuff marks; minor toning to fabric boards; contents clean and fresh with minor curling at the edges due to the nature of the case and minor yellowing to the outer edges of occasional pages. Near fine. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Winston S Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume V, Part 2, The Wilderness Years 1929-1935

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1981. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Very good . This is the U.S. first edition of Companion Volume V, Part 2 of the Official Biography of Sir Winston Churchill. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - seventeen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were originally published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. The Companion volumes for Volume V of the Official Biography are perhaps the most keenly sought and most prohibitive to acquire of all Official Biography volumes. The British and U.S. first editions saw just a single printing and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes - meaning that many first edition Official Biography sets will forever do without. The British first editions were bound in solid red cloth. The U.S. editions were published using British sheets, but more elaborately bound, with tan linen spines over blue buckram boards with blue spine title panels printed in red and gilt. The bindings also feature head and foot bands and vertical red transition rules between the tan linen and blue buckram. This U.S. first edition of Companion Volume V, Part 2, is in near fine condition in a very good dust jacket. The binding is immaculate - clean, tight, and square with no discernible wear. The only flaws we find are a trivial wrinkle to the binding cloth at the head of the front hinge - perhaps a binding flaw, perhaps a tiny bump. The contents are bright and crisp, the volume clearly unread. We find no spotting and no previous ownership marks. We note a light, .75 inch pen mark at the top edge near the spine (clearly a stray pen rather than a remainder mark). The dust jacket is bright and complete, with no losses and retaining the original front flap price. There is some incidental soiling at the hinges, flap folds, and upper rear face, modest wrinkling to the bottom edge at the spine and front face, and .25 inch closed tears at the spine ends and bottom edge of the front face. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Please note that this large, heavy book may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302e2.

On the Coordination of the Riemannian and Kinematic Techniques in Theoretical Cosmology. With Particular Reference to the Shift-Distance Law" in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Volume 116, 1957, pp. 335-350

      - FIRST EDITION OF WOLFGANG RINDLER'S 'EVENT HORIZON' PAPER, a concept Alan Guth cites and employs as an important part of his 'Inflationary Universe' theory. Guth needed to solve what was known as 'the horizon problem' in order to further his theory. Guth explained the problem in his seminal 1981 paper: "The standard model of hot big-bang cosmology requires initial conditions which are problematic in two ways: (1) The early universe is assumed to be highly homogeneous, in spite of the fact that separated regions were causally disconnected (horizon problem) and (2) the initial value of the Hubble constant must be fine tuned to extraordinary accuracy (flatness problem)" (Guth 1981, 347). "By simply examining the horizon as a function of epoch, Rindler showed that as we go back in time, a smaller and smaller fraction of all of the photons in the universe could be observed. none was within the horizon. Thus as we go back in time a larger and larger fraction of the universe was unobservable, and since the particles could not communicate, there was no way to smooth out any irregularities. Thus we are forced to the conclusion that if the universe is homogeneous and isotropic now as we believe it is, this is because it was created this way. This. means that we must believe that this initial condition is a metaphysical construct. Many physicists reject metaphysical arguments, and this is where Guth's inflation comes in" (Iyer, Highlights in Gravitation and Cosmology, 230). By supposing the inflationary event lasted from 10 36 seconds after the Big Bang to sometime between 10 33 and 10 32 seconds, Guth was able to explain both flatness and isotropy (the flatness problem and the horizon problem).         On the Coordination of the Riemannian and Kinematic Techniques in Theoretical Cosmology. With Particular Reference to the Shift-Distance Law" in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Volume 116, 1957, pp. 335-350

FIRST EDITION OF WOLFGANG RINDLER'S 'EVENT HORIZON' PAPER, a concept Alan Guth cites and employs as an important part of his 'Inflationary Universe' theory. CISTERN WORKERS".

circa 1981-83., Lafayette: - Gouache on paper, measuring 40 x 48 inches. Double-framed in cream cloth under glass and blonde wood. Colorful image with a free-flowing geometricity evoking cubism of two men hoisting water from a brick-lined cistern . William Tolliver (1951-2000) was a brilliant self-taught, Mississippi-born artist. He arose during the mid-1980's as a brilliant regional talent, an individual impelled by a desire to capture the landscapes and peoples of his native deep South. Whether dealing with everyday workers or back-alley jazzmen, he conveys a universal message through the common human experience. He was born in Vicksburg. His mother worked in the cotton fields by day, but also raised 14 children. To stimulate their interest in learning, she often challenged William and his older brother to drawing contests. Discovering William’s talent, she borrowed art books from the library that exposed her son to the works of the European masters. At age 14, Tolliver dropped out of school and left Mississippi to join the Job Corps program in Los Angeles. During his year-and-a-half stint with Job Corps, he studied carpentry at a government-sponsored trade school. Assisted by an instructor at the trade school who was also a visual artist, Tolliver received additional instruction and information about the techniques of painting. He married in 1977 and, in 1981, he moved his family to Lafayette, Louisiana, where an oil boom had created employment opportunities in the construction trades. In Lafayette, he worked as a wallpaper hanger and a house painter. Two years later, however, the city’s building industry fell into decline, leaving Tolliver unemployed. Laid off from his job and without income, he set out to relax in his free hours by painting with his daughters paint kit. Tolliver soon began to paint in a new and unique style that has been termed "representational abstract expressionism." Able to work in numerous mediums- oil, acrylic, watercolor, oil pastel, and dimensional reliefs- Tolliver was forever exploring new techniques.Critically ranked with such famous African American artists as Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence, Tolliver soon gained the reputation as one of America’s most renowned contemporary artists. He has received numerous awards and recognitions for his contributions in the field of art. He also produced the poster for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, the city where he finally settled.         Endless Night

Asahi Sonorama 1981 - 4to.; illustrated in black-and-white throughout, interior pages are clean, pictorial wrapper, without slipcase else fine. As one of Miyako Ishiuchi's most important early books, Endless Night presents deceptively quiet images of an abandoned building near the American military base Yokosuka in Japan. The decrepit hallways and uninhabited interiors hint at the space's former use as a brothel. Ishiuchi's strength as a photographer is her ability to convey meaning through suggestion and Endless Night does this masterfully. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
