Faces of the 20s. Portfolio of 12 signed prints

1981 - Signed. ABBOTT, Berenice.Faces of the 20s. Portfolio of 12 Signed Gelatin Silver Prints.New York: Parasol, 1981.Rare limited portfolio of 12 large gelatin silver prints, number 35 of only 60 issued, each impressive print signed and numbered in pencil on the matt by Abbott—"the dean of American photographers"—featuring her legendary 1920s portraits of James Joyce, Eugène Atget, Janet Flanner, Jean Cocteau, Edna St. Vincent Millay and others, in the original clamshell box. This rare portfolio, one of only 60 issued, contains 12 large gelatin silver prints, each boldly signed on the matt by Berenice Abbott, "the dean of American photographers" (New York Times). With these defining images Abbott illuminates the particular brilliance of major 20th-century figures such as James Joyce, Eugène Atget, Janet Flanner and Jean Cocteau. Abbott began her career in Paris, when in 1923 she took a job as darkroom assistant to Man Ray. Impressed by her skill he "offered Abbott his studio to make her own portraits, and soon her reputation rivaled his. Their styles differed— Man Ray excelled at stylization and abstract composition, while Abbott sought naturalness and spontaneity— and many sitters who hired Man Ray wished to pose for Abbott as well. ‘To be ‘done’ by Man Ray or Berenice Abbott meant you rated as somebody,’ remarked Sylvia Beach, proprietor of the avant-garde bookstore Shakespeare & Co. In 1926, after a well-received one-person exhibition at a small Parisian art gallery, Abbott opened her own studio Playing an important role in the lively critical debate on photography and modern art, she forged her own artistic philosophy." That approach was further realized with Abbott’s return to New York in 1929 and a series of cityscapes inspired by the Parisian images of Atget, a major "precursor of modern photography" whose influence was assured through Abbott’s efforts (Yochelson, Fantastic Passion for New York). This collection of Faces of the 20s is especially significant in its inclusion of Abbott’s 1925 portrait of Atget, taken shortly before his death, and her iconic 1928 portrait of Joyce, seen in a pensive yet elegant pose—images that define both the genius and humanity of these two legendary artists. Also contained in this impressive portfolio are Abbott’s portraits of her close friend André Gide, of Edna St. Vincent Millay framed by velvety blackness, a portrait of Janet Flanner in a whimsical top hat and one of her partner Solita Solano, a portrait of Jean Cocteau gesturing at the camera and an evocative print of his hands at rest, as well as Abbott’s portraits of Princess Eugène Murat, drummer Buddy Gilmore, Mrs. Raymond Massey, and Princess Marthe Bibesco, a writer and close friend of Gide and Cocteau. These exceptional signed prints genuinely express Abbott’s firmly expressed belief that "Photography helps people to see" (New York Times). An impressive suite of 12 signed prints in fine condition.         GRAFFITI SKIRT

New York: Original Artwork c.1981. Spray paint, marker pen and ink on a leather skirt. Painted circa 1981 for Joy "Joystick" Bouldin. Authentic hand painted clothing from the early days of hip hop are exceptionally rare. Cey Adams was a NYC subway writer in the late 70s and early 80s. He appeared in the historic PBS documentary "Style Wars" and studied at New York's School of Visual Arts. He emerged from train writing and was early into the gallery scene exhibiting alongside Jean Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. Cey was the founding creative director of Def Jam Recordings and worked with hip hop artists such as Run DMC, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z. Provenance: Joy "Joystick" Bouldin was a key figure in the New York club scene of the early 1980s. Aged 18, she arrived in New York and, eschewing her plans to go to college, found work at the Mudd Club. Here she was befriended by Andy Warhol, who introduced her to his inner circle, including Jean-Michel Basquiat (for whom she modelled) and Keith Haring. In 1982 she quit her job in a law firm to "work the elevator" at Danceteria. Deciding who to let in to the private club gave her a key position at the forefront of the emerging culture of the time, positioned at the intersection between fashion, Pop Art, Hip Hop and graffiti. Like key door-people everywhere, Joy knew everyone and everyone knew her. She came up with the idea of having the best known and most applauded graffiti writers, pop artists and musicians tag or draw on her clothing as they came in and out of the club. In doing so she created a wearable original artwork merging fashion, art and music that now also serves as a significant historical document. In true graffiti spirit, the writers wanted to be seen and learning of Joy's legendary art coats were keen to have their name displayed at the hottest club in town. As a result Joy was gifted items of hand-painted clothing in the hope she would wear them out. This skirt by Cey was once such item that she loved and wore regularly. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

[Original art work]: Johnny Rotten and Margaret Thatcher

[No place]: New West Magazine. [circa 1981]. Pen, ink, and collage on artist board. Image is approximately 9" x 9.75" mounted on larger artists board with opaque paper overlay with printing instructions, New West rubber stamp, and name of the art director (Nancy Butkus). A little bumped and soiled, but near fine. A particularly pleasing image of a tuxedoed and angelic-looking Johnny Rotten dancing the Charleston with a short-skirted and spiky-haired Maggie Thatcher as vinyl records fly about. Thatcher was the embodiment of pretty much everything the Sex Pistols were rebelling against. Suitable for, nay - crying out for, framing. .

Codex Seraphinianus - Deluxe Limited Edition

New York: Rizzoli, 2013. Limited Edition. Hard Cover. New. Serafini, Luigi. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. This is #263 of the deluxe numbered, limited edition of 600. It also includes an additional limited postercard (#38 of 150). Signed by Serafini. From the publisher: "An extraordinary and surreal art book, this edition has been redesigned by the author and includes new illustrations. Ever since the Codex Seraphinianus was first published in 1981, the book has been recognized as one of the strangest and most beautiful art books ever made. This visual encyclopedia of an unknown world written in an unknown language has fueled much debate over its meaning. Written for the information age and addressing the import of coding and decoding in genetics, literary criticism, and computer science, the Codex confused, fascinated, and enchanted a generation. While its message may be unclear, its appeal is obvious: it is a most exquisite artifact. Blurring the distinction between art book and art object, this anniversary edition-redesigned by the author and featuring new illustrations-presents this unique work in a new, unparalleled light. With the advent of new media and forms of communication and continuous streams of information, the Codex is now more relevant and timely than ever." Still in the publisher's shrinkwrapped shipping box. (I also have another identical "like new" copy of this book and poster without the original shrinkwrap available at $700.).

        GRAFFITI SKIRT

New York: Original Artwork c 1981 - Spray paint, marker pen and ink on a leather skirt. Painted circa 1981 for Joy "Joystick" Bouldin. Authentic hand painted clothing from the early days of hip hop are exceptionally rare.Cey Adams was a NYC subway writer in the late 70s and early 80s. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Genocide and Vendetta: The Round Valley Wars in Northern California

Norman, OK: University of Oklahoma Press, (1981). First Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good/Fine. 403 pages. An account of the often brutal interactions between white settlers and the Native Americans living in the Round Valley, in Northern Mendocino County, California. Since descendants of some of the worst offenders still live in the region, rumors of their attempts to supress the book abound, Its relative scarcity is due to a more prosaic chain of events. After an allegation of (unintentional) plagiarism was leveled against the section written by Estle Beard, the publisher investigated, agreed with the complaint, and withdrew the book from sale. Since both authors have since passed away, it seems unlikely that this book will ever be republished or converted into an e-book. The original hardcover is the only way to read about this troubled era in Northern California's history. First edition (first printing). A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. Review copy with publisher's review notice and press release enclosed.
