        Christopher Pratt

Toronto: Quintus Press, 1981. First Edition. Quarter Leather. Fine. 43 p. + plates. Edition limited to 279 signed copies. Signed screenprint Hawke Bay is from an edition of 93 of which this is no. 52. Screenprint loosely laid in, 15 b&w figures, self portrait, and 81 tipped-in colour and b&w plates. 4 colour prints in separate folder. Brown leather spine with beige cloth boards. Separate cloth and paper covered folder for prints. In brown leather and cloth slipcase. When Christopher Pratt first entered Mount Allison University in 1953 it was in pre-medicine. But after being encouraged to paint by Lawren Harris and Alex Colville, Pratt turned his attention to fine arts. Summer work as a construction surveyor at the American Naval Base at Argentia explains the precise measuring found in his paintings. In 1961, Pratt accepted the position of curator at the newly opened Memorial University Art Gallery in St. John's. He remained at the gallery for two and a half years before deciding to concentrate on his painting full-time. The result has been a prolific number of iconic clapboard houses and boats on the seashore as well as more unsettling images like building demolitions and bleak landscapes. Though some of his images supply a feeling of calm, others seem to convey the sharp, northeast winds of his native Newfoundland. Signed by Artist and Essayists

Rock Rodondo. Sketches Third & Fourth of "The Encantadas"

Bremen, Maine and New York: Red Angel Press, 1981. Signed, Limited Edition, one of 100 copies, all on Fabriano paper, each signed on and numbered by the artist/printer on the colophon. Page size: 12 x 12-1/4 inches. 26 pp; plus triple-page wood engraving. Bound: beige linen cloth that has been printed in very pale blue and gray at the out third front and back panels, title stamped in black on spine. Front pastedown is an original paper mache sculpture of grayish-tan handmade paper of the "Rock Rodondo" with the Frigate-bird, according to Melville, the "...man of-war hawk...[that] makes his first land at Rodondo", flying towards it. The back pastedown has a tan fold over with wood engraving of Frigate-birds in flight, protecting a triple-page fold-up wood engraving printed on ivory Japanese paper of the "Rock Redondo," with the aquatic birds that inhabit it. The back flyleaf contains an "Artist's Note" with a key to the birds pictured on the "tower." The binding is the result of the collaboration between Ron Keller of Red Angel Press and Philip Warner who designed and screen-printed the image on the covers. Mr. Warner, who lives and works in New York City, teaches at the Parsons School of Design; and his work, on textiles and papers has been exhibited in numerous one-man and group shows throughout the country. This is an elaborate and unique presentation of Melville's text. Hand-set and printed in Bembo, the text is handsomely set off by Keller's graceful birds. The title page also features the Frigate-bird in flight; these are blind stamped. An elegant presentation, an homage to Melville. Out of print for several years, it is available only on the secondary market.

Something Wicked This Way Comes (Original screenplay for the 1983 film)

Burbank, CA: Walt Disney Pictures, 1981. Revised script for the 1983 film. Written for the screen by Ray Bradbury, based on his 1962 novel. After a carnival comes to Green Town, the good citizens are compelled to follow their deepest desires, caught under the spell of the malevolent Mr. Dark (Jonathan Pryce) who can grant those desires on one condition: that the grantees will forever join his freak show. In 1977, Bradbury sold the film rights to his novel to Paramount. He and director Jack Clayton, whom Bradbury had previously worked with on Moby Dick, produced a completed script. However, production never began and the film was eventually put into turnaround. At the time Walt Disney Pictures was concentrating on films with more mature themes in an attempt to break free from their stereotype as an animation and family film studio. After the success of darker children's fantasy pictures by competing studios, such as Time Bandits and The Dark Crystal, Disney decided to purchase the adaptation's rights and hired Bradbury to produce a new script from scratch. .Set in Greentown, Illinois, but shot on location in Morrisville and Waterville, Vermont. Gray titled wrappers, noted as Revised on the front wrapper, marked production No. 0233, dated 8/24/81, with credits for novelist and screenwriter Bradbury. Title page wit integral with the first page of the text, dated 8/24/81. 127 leaves, mechanically reproduced, with blue revision pages throughout, dated 9/30/81. Pages about Fine, wrapper Near Fine bound internally with three gold brads. Weldon (1996), p. 519.

      G. P. Putnam's Sons 1981 - G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1981. 1/4 Cloth. Book Condition: Near Fine (some rubbing along the spine). Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 8vo; [2, 3-12] 13-348, [4] pages. A Fine first printing of the first edition in equally unblemished dust-jacket, inscribed by author Thomas Harris on the title page. In this book, Harris introduces Hannibal Lecter, one of literature's most memorable villains of the 21st century. This copy is unique because of its personal inscription and history. Harris inscribed this lovely copy to his personal friends at whose isolated shotgun-style house he stayed for 18 months writing "Red Dragon" and where he conceived the character of Hannibal Lecter amidst his nocturnal breaks in the cotton fields. Inscription: "For Toby and Milly with my thanks for their hospitality + friendship. Thomas Harris, October 21, 1981." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Fast Times at Ridgemont High [Advance Uncorrected Proofs -- Quite Scarce and Likely Rare]

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1981. First edition. A Near Fine copy of the ADVANCE UNCORRECTED PROOFS (within called the BOUND GALLEY) for the first edition, first printing of this highly-notable book (minor sticker residue to the front wrapper's upper right corner -- otherwise Fine with light soiling and with toning to the spine and a faint crease line to each wrapper's lower leading corner) and containing a few samples of the illustrations planned to be used in the book; Crowe's tale of his 1979 return under an assumed name to Clairemont High School in San Diego -- a School that he had briefly attended. While there, the youthful-looking Crowe (who had graduated from high school in 1972 at the age of 15) mingled freely with the students both at school and at their homes and hangouts. The book -- optioned for a film even before it was published -- provided the basis for the 1982 film of the same name starring Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh (in her breakthrough film), Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates, Brian Backer, Robert Romanus, and Ray Watson. The film also provided minor roles for Nicholas Cage (in his debut film) and Forest Whitaker ( in his first on-screen performance of note). In 2005, the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". In our experience, copies of the Advance Uncorrected Proofs for this debut novel are as scarce as hen's teeth. A Near Fine copy of the ADVANCE UNCORRECTED PROOFS (within called the BOUND GALLEY) for this notable debut novel. QUITE SCARCE INDEED and, in our opinion, likely RARE.

TYPED LETTER SIGNED (TLS) with a HOLOGRAPH ADDITION

[6 October 1981], New York - Two pages with envelope on Parker Meridien Hotel letterhead to Fred Martin of New Directions. In part: "Very regrettably Mitch Douglas didn't let you know that I was not releasing 'Now the Cats with Jewelled Claws' but holding it back for rewrites of a considerable nature and all quite essential. This play was written while I was quite ill in the sixties and the fact is embarrassingly [sic] evident in the text, especially as I read it in print. I'm afraid that everything about my professional relationship with Douglas was regrettable. I am a slow and consientious [sic] writer if permitted to be. Not an electric rabbit at a dog race. Of course these misapprehensions are finally set right. I've done two verysions [sic] of 'Clothes' since the one thrown with such cavalier haste onto Broadway. SIGNED as "Tennessee." In holograph: "Please remember me to Jay [James Laughlin, founder of New Directions] who introduced me to the 'world of Letters.' I never want him to be ashamed of a work of mine that bears the N.D. imprimateur [sic]." And in another color ink and likely added at the last minute: "P.P.S. There is also a now definitive "Red Devil Battery Sign"-- a controversial but major work." Normal creases from mailing. Near Fine with wonderful content [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Some light foxing to edges, the occasional faint spot to contents; an excellent copy in the jacket with a little rubbing to extremities. First edition, first impression.

DAU AL SET. [Revista.

24,5x17,5 cm.
