        Parijs, Fotos 1950-1954

1981 - VAN DER ELSKEN, Ed. Parijs, Fotos 1950-1954. Amsterdam: Anthon Beeke, 1981. Slim quarto, original black cloth, mounted cover photograph. $1500.First edition of this revealing photo-essay on Parisian life in the early 1950s, illustrated with 172 pages of finely screened halftones, with a special segment on Australian "femme fatale" Vali Myers, featured in his first photobook, Love on the Left Bank.Parijs "derives from the years when Van der Elsken lived in Paris"" between 1950 and 1954"" focusing on an especially personal body of work that he made at the time: diaristic snapshots of girlfriends and acquaintances living on the Left Bank (Parr & Badger, 245). "Throughout these years, Van der Elsken and William Klein often seemed to be shadowing one another". always emphacizing the expressive over the reportorial and always gravitating to society's margins"" to the rebels, the gangsters, the bohemians, the artists" (Roth, 156). Van der Elsken used many existing photographs he had taken of one particular girlfriend, the "kohl-eyed" Australian beauty Vali Myers, known later as "the Witch of Positano," for the way she darkened her under-eyes with black paint. Text in Dutch. See Icons of Photography, 141; Roth, 146; Parr & Badger, 245; Open Book, 168. Fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The King of Comedy (Original screenplay for the 1982 film)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1981. Final Draft script for the 1982 film. Copy belonging to sound mixer Les Lazarowitz, with his holograph name to the title page. Noted as copy No. 78 in green holograph ink at the top right corner of same. Perhaps Scorsese's most underrated film, "The King of Comedy" is a brilliant study of celebrity worship and American media culture by way of an exploratory journey into the mind of Rupert Pupkin, a man totally lacking in self-awareness, driven only by obsession. The titular character is played by Robert De Niro, cast completely against type, in furious pursuit of his idol, Jerry Langford (Jerry Lewis), along with the genius addition of Sandra Bernhard as De Niro's crazed groupie assistant. Joyce Millman of Salon called "The King of Comedy" "Martin Scorsese's second least popular movie, after The Last Temptation of Christ. Which is a shame, because it's Scorsese's second greatest film, after Taxi Driver." Set and shot on location in New York. Brown titled wrappers, with credits for screenwriter Zimmerman. Title page present, noted as FINAL DRAFT, with credits for screenwriter Zimmerman. 105 leaves, mimeograph. Pages Very Good plus, wrapper Very Good plus bound with two gold screw brads.

        Early Years 1900-1927

1981 - STEICHEN, Edward. The Early Years 1900-1927. (New York: Aperture, 1981). Large elephant folio (17 by 21 inches), original ivory self-wrappers; pp. 8. WITH: Elephant folio suite of 12 original photogravures. Housed in publisher's woven-silk portfolio. $7800.Signed limited first edition, number 182 of 1000 copies, signed by photographer Beaumont Newhall and Steichen's daughter Mary Steichen Calderone on text pages three and five, respectively. Included are Steichen's "The Flatiron," "In Memoriam," Moonrise" and "Heavy Roses.""In a career that spanned 77 years, Steichen became the country's most celebrated and highest-priced photographer". a craftsman of genius" (McDarrah & McDarrah, 468). Toward the end of his life Steichen approached Aperture with the idea of publishing his early photographs as hand-pulled photogravures. Intrigued by the project, they enlisted "many years and the talents of many people" to recapture this "exquisite, all-but-forgotten process." This limited edition of 12 hand-pulled photogravures features some of Steichen's most memorable images. Perhaps most renowned is his 1905 rendering of New York's Flatiron Building, a photograph that "is a dramatic representation of that moment at dusk when the sky turns a leaden blue-green and highlights glow in the half-light". There is no clearer example of an early modernist photographic composition, one that combines contemporary Pictorial expression in art". alive with the gestures of living in New York just as it becomes a vital, international metropolis" (Frizot, 318). This edition is one of 500 using photogravures printed on Rives BFK, with the remaining 500 editions printed on Papier Duchene. An additional 100 artist proofs of the suite of 12 photogravures were also produced. With essays by Newhall and Calderone. A fine copy of a splendid volume.         Signed photograph.

New York: , c.1981. "10 × 8" glossy promotional photograph. Very good, docketed verso, "Blue Note 2-12-81". Signed "Thelonius Monk" together with a small self-portrait sketch with trademark beard and hat, it also appears that Monk tried to sign previously with a dry pen which has left some vague ink traces, and a couple of scratches to the emulsion. The date docketing verso places the signing unusually late in Monk's life; "In 1973, he vanished again. There were rumours that he was ill and had been taken in by his old friend and mentor the Baroness Nica de Koenigswarter, who lives in a big house in Weehawken, New Jersey. The rumours turned out to be true, and this is what the Baroness had to say about Monk before he died. 'No doctor has put his finger on what is wrong with him? He's not unhappy, and his mind works very well. He knows what is going on in the world, and I don't know how, because he doesn't read the newspapers and he only watches a little telly. He's withdrawn, that's all. It's as though he had gone into retreat. He takes walks several times a week, and Nellie comes over from New York almost every day to cook for him. He began to withdraw in 1973, and he hasn't touched the piano since 1976. He has one twenty or thirty feet from his bed, so to speak, but he never goes near it. When Barry Harris visits, he practices on it, and he'll ask Monk what the correct changes to 'Ruby, My Dear' are, and Monk will tell him. Charlie Rouse, his old tenor saxophonist, came to see him on his birthday the other day, but Monk isn't really interested in seeing anyone. The strange thing is he looks beautiful. He has never said that he won't play the piano again. He suddenly went into this, so maybe he'll suddenly come out'" (from Whitney Balliett's obituary of Monk, reprinted in Goodbyes and Other Messages: A Journal of Jazz 1981 - 1990).
