AUDUBON'S BIRDS OF AMERICA: The Audubon Society Baby Elephant Folio

New York: Abbeville, 1981. First edition and first printing, and a subscribers copy, of the very fine Baby Elephant Folio edition reorganized and updated by famed naturalists, ornithologists, artists, and educators Roger Tory and Virginia Peterson. This copy with publisher's prespectus subscription booklet with reserve form specifically for members and friends of the National Audubon Society. The subscription booklet signed by important New York publisher Kenneth Seeman Giniger beneath the photograph of him examining the 'Baby Elephant Audubon' on the rear cover of the booklet. Portrait of Audubon by John Syme as frontispiece, 435 fine colour plates, many folding, from Audubon’s original paintings, extensive additional illustrations throughout in both colour and black and white, sectional titlepages printed on heavy wove stock in gilt. Thick, Baby Elephant Folio [15.25 by 12 inches], in the publisher’s fine original binding of half black/brown morocco over white linen, the spine decorated with fine 19th century style gilt compartments, in the original slipcase of white linen backed boards with a large colour paste-down label on one board. (41), plates and descriptions, concordance, index. A very fine copy, the book is as mint and pristine as is the prospectus for Society members, the slipcase only with some minor rubbing to the label and a little expected soiling to the white linen. FIRST EDITION, AND A SUBSCRIBER'S COPY WITH ASSOCIATION, OF THIS FINE AND FITTING TRIBUTE FROM THE AUDUBON SOCIETY TO THEIR FOUNDER. This edition magnificently reproduces Aububon’s plates, but differs from previous editions in that the plates are organized phylogenetically instead of by the order of their original subscription. They are then cross-referenced to Audubon's original ordering. The plates are captioned with each bird's currently accepted vernacular name along with Audubon's identification when it differs. And an up-to-date classification by order, family, and species is included. The text is by two of the 20th century’s greatest naturalist, the Petersons, and the limitation page is signed by each of them. This edition also includes a full color illustrated survey of the work of other North American bird artists and illustrators, from the eighteenth century work of Mark Catesby to the time of publication. A fine edition of Audubon, valuable not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its scientific and artistic information.

Priestley gained considerable fame as "the voice of the common people", as he was often called, a patriotic radio broadcaster, second in popularity only to Winston Churchill. He was offered a knighthood and a peerage as a token of his homeland's esteem for his work, both of which he refused, but he did accept the Order of Merit in 1977. 10 Typed Signed Letters (TSL); 1) TLS to S. Lloyd Kay (Messrs. Banks of Cheltenham Ltd.), 2 October 1933. "Many thanks for your invitation of the 26th September. I am sorry I cannot accept it as I have already have arranged to be in the North of England at the end of this month. With the best wishes of the success of the function?." 2) TLS to A. Cecil Piper, Public Library, Richmond, Surrey, 7 September, 1934: "Many thanks for your invitation to your Rotary Club. I am sorry I cannot accept it, but I expect to be so busy this autumn with theatrical and film work, which often demands one's instant attention, and am compelled to refuse nearly all invitations of this kind." 3) TLS to [Adrian?] Brunel, 17 November 1936, informing Brunel that his play isn't suitable ("It is undoubtedly as well done as most plays that get performed but I do not feel that either its action or its dialogue are quite good enough for a big theme of this kind."). 4) TLS to Mrs. Parker, 29 August 1945, re finding a publisher for her children's poems. 5) TLS to Mr. Darwin, 23 December 1958, re "Bedlam" ("I think there is some excellent stuff in it ["Bedlam"] but I think you should put some more work in it.") 6) TLS to Miss Lanier, 17 March 1964, telling her that she is an insightful reader of his books that he has two books that will be published soon (Sir Michael and Sir George and Man and Time). 7) TLS to Mrs. Agnes Darrell-Smith, 17 April 1968, "I have not replied before to your letter of 31st March because I was abroad when it arrived here and have not long been back. Not being a film star I am afraid I have no photograph to give you and all I can offer is this letter, together with my best wishes." TLS to P.R. Threadgold, 1 September 1976, informing him that he has nothing to do with the management or business arrangements of The Good Companions musical. 8) TLS to Sir Denis Forman, 7 November 1977, thanking him for his outstanding letter ("it is both warm and witty, a rare combination."). 9) TLS to Denis Forman of Grenada Television Ltd., 7 November 1977, thanking him for his warm and witty letter. 2 short articles about Priestly; a colour Wills's cigarette card of Priestley, n.d.; 10) TLS to the Argus Book Shop of Chicago, 3 September 1933, with envelope, in which he outlines several recent works to aid in the publishing of the upcoming Argus catalogue: "Moreover, I am not-and never have been-a collector of first or special editions, though of course I include many such collectors among my friends." 2 Signed Typescripts; 1) Typescript, 5 pp., signed by Priestley, dated "Sunday, 20th 1940" on p. 1.         What We Talk About When We Talk About Love

NY: Knopf. 1981. The uncorrected proof copy of Carver's second major story collection, and his first significant commercial success: the first of his books to be published by a mainstream literary publishing house, Knopf, and the first to go into multiple printings immediately after publication. Carver's relentless paring away of the excess in his stories, which earned him the label "minimalist" -- a designation he stridently rejected throughout his career -- is evident in this collection: two of the stories had been published earlier, in the collection Furious Seasons, but here are shorter and more spare (one of them also having been re-titled). Reproduces Carver's holograph corrections to the text, including a number of small word changes, excisions, and in one case the addition of a line to the end of a story. Signed by Carver. A remarkable glimpse of the stories as works-in-progress, up to and even after they had been typeset for publication. Several small spots to the covers; near fine in wrappers. First Edition. Softcover. Near Fine.

A Confederacy of Dunces (signed Copy, Inscribed By Thelma Ducoing Toole)

New York: Grove Press Inc, 1981. First Black Cat edition (B-452), stated first printing. Paperback with cover painting by Sanjulian and design by Peter Morance. 18 × 10.5cm, 415pp + 1pp ad. Signed by the author's mother to the half-title, "May 3, 1981 - Appreciation and Regards from John Kennedy Toole's Mother, Thelma Ducoing Toole, to Dear Peter and Margaret Watson". A monument to sloth, rant and contempt, a behemoth of fat, flatulence and furious suspicion of anything modern - this is Ignatius J. Reilly of New Orleans, noble crusader against a world of dunces. The ordinary folk of New Orleans seem to think he is unhinged. Ignatius ignores them, heaving his vast bulk through the city's fleshpots in a noble crusade against vice, modernity and ignorance. But his momma has a nasty surprise in store for him: Ignatius must get a job. Undaunted, he uses his new-found employment to further his mission - and now he has a pirate costume and a hot-dog cart to do it with... John Kennedy Toole's cult novel wasn't published until ten years after his suicide, and only then after the persistent efforts of his mother Thelma Ducoing Toole who finally persuaded the author Walker Percy to read it. Percy recognised a cult classic and it soon received the recognition it deserved winning the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1981. Condition: This paperback copy has creased covers and some browning to the text. It is in basically good shape, the front cover having creases and folds to all edges, and some corner curling. The spine is creased where read, and the back cover has some creasing but to a lesser extent. The inner binding is secure with no loose pages. Thelma Ducoing Toole's inscription is clear and in very good order. A very scarce title to find signed in any capacity. . Signed. First Thus. Paperback. Good/ .

        Sötétség délben. [Darkness At Noon.]

Ujváry, Griff, München 1981 - In publisher's wrappers. First Hungarian edition. (12), 11-144, (2) p. First Hungarian edition of Koestler's anti-communist Magnum Opus the "Darkness at Noon". Arthur Koestler (1905-1983) was a Hungarian-British author and journalist, who was engaged with Communism and worked as an agent of the Comintern until his disillusionment with Stalinism in 1938. Darkness at Noon was written in German and translated into English by Koestler's companion Daphne Hardy and was published first in London, in 1941. The book gained him international fame, and was translated into many languages. Evidently it was banned in the Communist countries, and this Hungarian first edition was published in Germany by a Hungarian emigrant publisher. A few copies were smuggled into Hungary and the underground, samizdat publisher, "AB Független Kiadó" published it as a facsimile, first time in Hungary in 1984, in the Orwell-Year. Front cover slightly stained at upper edge, bumped at lower corned, inside clean. Overall in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition]
