Reprint. The monumental Standard Edition was the work of the English psychoanalysts and translators James and Alix Strachey (1887-1967 and 1892-1973), who had met and fallen in love during the Great War. Their personal relationship would develop in tandem with an interest in the nascent field of psychoanalysis, which led them both to undergo analysis with Freud in 1920, shortly after their marriage. Freud asked them to translate 'Ein Kind wird geschlagen' into English, and the publication of 'A Child is being Beaten' in the International Journal of Psycho-Analysis in 1920 marked the beginning of their translations of his writings and 'signalled the beginning of one of the most heroic undertakings in the history of psychoanalysis [...] For almost twenty years James and Alix committed themselves wholeheartedly to their task, rendering Freud's words into a unified, scientific vocabulary' (ODNB). The first of the twenty-four volumes of the Standard Edition was published by the Hogarth Press and the Institute of Psycho-Analysis in 1953 and the twenty-third in 1966, the year that James was awarded the Schlegel-Tieck prize for translation. The twenty-fourth volume, Indexes and Bibliographies, was compiled by Angela Richards and is dedicated to James and Alix Strachey (who had died the year before it was published); in her preface to this final volume Anna Freud wrote of James Strachey that, '[n]o translator of similar qualifications could have been found for his work, nor could anybody else have pursued it with the same scholarly precision, understanding and indefatigable determination through personal handicap up to his death. It is perhaps the highest praise for Strachey's achievement that for a large part of the world's reading public the Standard Edition, with its lucid editorial comments, entered into surprising competition with the author's original text' (XXIV, p. vii). This opinion is echoed by P. Meisel and W. Kendrick in Bloomsbury/Freud. The Letters of James and Alix Strachey (London: 1986): '[t]he Standard Edition is unquestionably the greatest achievement of its kind in the twentieth century. It surpasses in completeness and accuracy any Freud in any language, including German, thanks both to James's meticulous editing and to the admirable extent of its explanatory footnotes' (p. 313). Cf. Grinstein 10707a (first ed.).

THE LIFE WORK OF DARD HUNTER. A Progressive Illustrated Assemblage of His Works as Artist, Craftsman, Author, Papermaker, and Printer

Chillicothe, Ohio: Mountain House Press,, 1981-1983. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. Chillicothe, Ohio: Mountain House Press,, 1981-1983. First edition. Fine/near fine. 1981-83. Two volumes. 12 x 17. Frontis, (8), 198; frontis, (9), 131 pages, plus numerous inserts. Full chestnut morocco by Gray Parrot (binder's ticket at the back of each volume), ruled in black & gilt, Hunter armorial device gilt on Vol. I, Hunter watermark gilt on Vol. 2. Each volume in a cloth tray case with morocco title label. Fine. This is one of the great fine press works produced in the last century. It's oddly grand and whimsical at the same time. This is one of 50 deluxe sets (of a total 150 sets) signed by Dard Hunter II. In addition to the full leather bindings the deluxe copies were printed on a heavier stock of handmade paper and have many extras. Original paper and printing samples are found in super-abundance throughout. Vol. 1 covers Hunter's early career from 1904-11 with copious detail and illustrations from his work at the Roycroft Studios; the volume closes with a section on his stained glass creations from 1904 to 1943. There are 194 colored and 65 b&w tipped-in illustrations; most printed to resemble the originals in both paper and color, requiring hand-cut tinted blocks and in some cases watercolors to achieve the desired fidelity. Vol. 2 covers Hunter's life with paper from the Mill House in Marlborough, NY (1912) to Papermaking by Hand in America (1950). There are extensive photographs from all periods, about 50 tipped-in samples of Hunter's papers and watermarks -- many full-page, and a bibliography with samples from the original publications. Printed with a Washington handpress on handmade paper with Dard Hunter II's hand-cut and cast type. Both volumes as new, true fine in and out. Both slipcases (oatmeal colored cloth with leather spine labels) near fine, minor shelwear only, no bumps, no splits. One side of the box of Volume II looks a little dusty or very slightly soiled. A completely wonderful set.

AUDUBON'S BIRDS OF AMERICA: The Audubon Society Baby Elephant Folio

New York: Abbeville, 1981. First edition and first printing, and a subscribers copy, of the very fine Baby Elephant Folio edition reorganized and updated by famed naturalists, ornithologists, artists, and educators Roger Tory and Virginia Peterson. This copy with publisher's prespectus subscription booklet with reserve form specifically for members and friends of the National Audubon Society. The subscription booklet signed by important New York publisher Kenneth Seeman Giniger beneath the photograph of him examining the 'Baby Elephant Audubon' on the rear cover of the booklet. Portrait of Audubon by John Syme as frontispiece, 435 fine colour plates, many folding, from Audubon’s original paintings, extensive additional illustrations throughout in both colour and black and white, sectional titlepages printed on heavy wove stock in gilt. Thick, Baby Elephant Folio [15.25 by 12 inches], in the publisher’s fine original binding of half black/brown morocco over white linen, the spine decorated with fine 19th century style gilt compartments, in the original slipcase of white linen backed boards with a large colour paste-down label on one board. (41), plates and descriptions, concordance, index. A very fine copy, the book is as mint and pristine as is the prospectus for Society members, the slipcase only with some minor rubbing to the label and a little expected soiling to the white linen. FIRST EDITION, AND A SUBSCRIBER'S COPY WITH ASSOCIATION, OF THIS FINE AND FITTING TRIBUTE FROM THE AUDUBON SOCIETY TO THEIR FOUNDER. This edition magnificently reproduces Aububon’s plates, but differs from previous editions in that the plates are organized phylogenetically instead of by the order of their original subscription. They are then cross-referenced to Audubon's original ordering. The plates are captioned with each bird's currently accepted vernacular name along with Audubon's identification when it differs. And an up-to-date classification by order, family, and species is included. The text is by two of the 20th century’s greatest naturalist, the Petersons, and the limitation page is signed by each of them. This edition also includes a full color illustrated survey of the work of other North American bird artists and illustrators, from the eighteenth century work of Mark Catesby to the time of publication. A fine edition of Audubon, valuable not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its scientific and artistic information.

J.B. (John Boynton) Priestley collection of 10 Typed Signed Letters (TSL), 2 Signed Typescripts , 27 B&w photos and a small medal

1981 - J.B. Priestley was an English novelist, playwright, and broadcaster. He was one of England's last great writers. Priestley was a member of the last generation of freethinking British "sages" who contemplated both science and philosophy in their literary output. Priestley gained considerable fame as "the voice of the common people", as he was often called, a patriotic radio broadcaster, second in popularity only to Winston Churchill. He was offered a knighthood and a peerage as a token of his homeland's esteem for his work, both of which he refused, but he did accept the Order of Merit in 1977. 10 Typed Signed Letters (TSL); 1) TLS to S. Lloyd Kay (Messrs. Banks of Cheltenham Ltd.), 2 October 1933. "Many thanks for your invitation of the 26th September. What We Talk About When We Talk About Love

NY: Knopf. 1981. The uncorrected proof copy of Carver's second major story collection, and his first significant commercial success: the first of his books to be published by a mainstream literary publishing house, Knopf, and the first to go into multiple printings immediately after publication. Carver's relentless paring away of the excess in his stories, which earned him the label "minimalist" -- a designation he stridently rejected throughout his career -- is evident in this collection: two of the stories had been published earlier, in the collection Furious Seasons, but here are shorter and more spare (one of them also having been re-titled). Reproduces Carver's holograph corrections to the text, including a number of small word changes, excisions, and in one case the addition of a line to the end of a story. Signed by Carver. A remarkable glimpse of the stories as works-in-progress, up to and even after they had been typeset for publication. Several small spots to the covers; near fine in wrappers. First Edition. Softcover. Near Fine.

A Confederacy of Dunces (signed Copy, Inscribed By Thelma Ducoing Toole)

New York: Grove Press Inc, 1981. First Black Cat edition (B-452), stated first printing. Paperback with cover painting by Sanjulian and design by Peter Morance. 18 × 10.5cm, 415pp + 1pp ad. Signed by the author's mother to the half-title, "May 3, 1981 - Appreciation and Regards from John Kennedy Toole's Mother, Thelma Ducoing Toole, to Dear Peter and Margaret Watson". A monument to sloth, rant and contempt, a behemoth of fat, flatulence and furious suspicion of anything modern - this is Ignatius J. Reilly of New Orleans, noble crusader against a world of dunces. The ordinary folk of New Orleans seem to think he is unhinged. Ignatius ignores them, heaving his vast bulk through the city's fleshpots in a noble crusade against vice, modernity and ignorance. But his momma has a nasty surprise in store for him: Ignatius must get a job. Undaunted, he uses his new-found employment to further his mission - and now he has a pirate costume and a hot-dog cart to do it with... John Kennedy Toole's cult novel wasn't published until ten years after his suicide, and only then after the persistent efforts of his mother Thelma Ducoing Toole who finally persuaded the author Walker Percy to read it. Percy recognised a cult classic and it soon received the recognition it deserved winning the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1981. Condition: This paperback copy has creased covers and some browning to the text. It is in basically good shape, the front cover having creases and folds to all edges, and some corner curling. The spine is creased where read, and the back cover has some creasing but to a lesser extent. The inner binding is secure with no loose pages. Thelma Ducoing Toole's inscription is clear and in very good order. A very scarce title to find signed in any capacity. . Signed. First Thus. Paperback. Good/ .
