        HOWL, For Carl Solomon

New York: Gotham Book Mart, circa 1979. First edition, second issue, unauthorized. no binding. Very good. 2 leaves, printed on rectos only in purple ink: [1] title, [2] dedication to Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, Neal Cassady and Lucien Carr. The Title page signed by Allen Ginsberg, with the signature and a note by Marthe Rexroth: "I cranked the ditto master at S F State the first time around -and! was at the reading". On the verso of the title, McClure has written the lengthy note: "This first long poem of Allen's was read at the Six Gallery in San Francisco in October 1955. I was 22 years old and gave my first reading also that night. I read a poem titled FOR THE DEATHS OF 100 WHALES and other poems of nature and new consciousness. Our co-readers that night were Whalen, Snyder, & Lamantia. Kenneth Rexroth was M.C. I met Jack Kerouac that night. The group of us - minus Lamantia - read again in Berkeley, March 1956, on a rainy evening. It was a fine evening for poetry and I remember my pleasure in Allen's comic 'America'. I read mostly from a huge notebook of experimental poems of consciousness. Michael McClure." On the dedication page are the signatures of Philip Lamantia, Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and an inscription by David Meltzer: "When Allen first read Kaddish in SF, I read too. I was 22." McClure, Snyder, Lamantia and Whalen read at the Six Gallery the same night Ginsberg read "Howl," and Ferlinghetti published its first trade edition through his City Lights Press in 1956. Two leaves in a frame for presentation, the McClure "essay" on the verso of the title sheet viewable through a cutout on the back of the foam mounting. The Marthe Rexroth statement with Allen Ginsberg's signature on the title page; the McClure essay on verso; Lamantia, Snyder, Whalen, Ferlinghetti have signed the dedication page, Doug Meltzer has added his brief note (and drawing) about his reading in 1956 when AG first read KADDISH. Promoted (though promotion in this case was a 100 postcards and posters at bars on North Beach including the offer of free admission, the hat passed for the wine - a "Charming event.". In the audience was Jack Kerouac who by has own account in THE DHARMA BUMS and by others was quite drunk) as "6 Poets at 6 Gallery", five poets read with Snyder reading from MYTHS & TEXTS last following AG's first reading in public of HOWL. Kenneth Rexroth was the sixth, the elder acting as m.c. Ferlinghetti the next day sent AG a telegram: " I greet you at the beginning of a great career. When do I get the manuscript?" He published in 1956, and was greeted not long after with obscenity charges from which he and his store manager ShIg Murao were acquitted in October 1957. Peter Howard of Serendipity Books, Berkeley, handled at least one complete mimeo copy with similarities to this presentation (see below). This copy bought via another dealer who bought this directly from Mr. Howard a decade or more ago. Why just the title and dedication pages is a question only the late great bookseller could answer, but clearly his hand is in the signatures added to at least one complete copy, and the addition of the Philip Lamantia signature to the present offering. Needless to say rare, and a wonderful addition to any Beat collection. This second issue was produced without Ginsberg's permission by Gotham Book Mart using the original ditto master obtained when they were appraising the poet's papers. The project was aborted, Ginsberg told according to his bibliographer that most copies were destroyed and none sold. Copies are known to exist with and without a Gotham Book Mart stamp. Without the stamp it is very difficult to distinguish it from the original. Peter Howard acquired at least four sets (17 pages each printed on one side) of unstapled, unstamped, sheets in 1995 and had them signed and in some cases inscribed. Ginsberg was given one, three other complete sets were offered for sale. The present offering (title and dedication sheets) clearly done at the same time, although The Lamantia signature is not on all the sets. The first edition in either issue is rare. The first printing of HOWL typed by Robert Creeley run off by Marthe Rexroth on a mimeograph machine at S F State was reportedly only 25 copies, and produced and sent to the friends of the poet about three months prior to the City Lights edition. It is rare: no copies located on WorldCat (although surely some are held in institutions). We know of three copies at auction. Lot 140 Christie's NYC auction of 6 Dec., 2013, with a Peter Howard provenance which consisted of 15 leaves printed on rectos only, signed or inscribed (similarly to the present copy) by Marthe Rexroth, Snyder, Ferlinghetti, Meltzer and Whalen with the McClure essay on verso (as with Berkeley copy - see below), but not Lamantia sold for $118,750. Another copy at Bonham's auction of 12 Aug. 2012, inscribed by Ginsberg only sold for $74,500, inc. premium. The Duncan copy was auctioned in 1977. The only copy located on WorldCat for the second issue (and clearly identified as such) is at California's Bancroft Library, and from the description one of the three Peter Howard copies. One of the three Howard copies is offered by Brick Row Book Shop, San Francisco for $37,500. [N.B. I am grateful to Jeff Maser for sharing his knowledge regarding the second issue of HOWL, and for sending me the useful link regarding the Brick Row Book Shop copy with a thorough description of the aborted Gotham issue and the making of the Peter Howard copies as cataloged by John Crichton.

Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike "...liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country."       1979 - CLARK, Larry. Tulsa. (New York: Rapoport [Lustrum Press], 1971 [i.e. 1979]). Slim folio, original black cloth, original dust jacket. $2000.Signed limited first hardbound edition of Clark’s shocking first book, boldly signed and numbered "38/400" by Clark on the title page."Clark set out in his photographs to try to tell the truth about the world and about himself" (Roth, 208). Tulsa is now a photography classic— the work that established Clark’s reputation, despite its limited exposure from a small print run. It documents the violent, desperate lives of "speed freaks" in the photographer’s hometown, told from inside the story. Clark has innovatively collapsed the distance between the "objective observer" and his subjects. First published in 1971 by Ralph Gibson’s Lustrum Press and produced with funds donated by Danny Seymour, whose own book A Loud Song was printed back-to-back with Tulsa. This is the first hardcover edition, bound by Clark in 1979 from the 1971 sheets. Roth, 208-09. Open Book, 272-73. Fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Irre Kostüme. Jungs zum Knuddeln. Bunt, schrill, poppig. Gute Pop-Musik zum Tanzen. Synopsis: The Sweet started out with very typical basic fare - the "bubble-gum music" of the early 70s. Their songs "Big Wam Bum", "Poppa Joe" and "Co Co" became solid disco fox hits. However, these boys also managed to net the rock fans when they turned around on their style with songs such as "Teenage Rampage", "Ballroom Blitz", "Block Buster", "Fox on the run" and their top hit "Love is like Oxygen". Up to this day these are the essence of The Sweet for a great many people. Brian Connolly left the band in 1979 to start another band: The New Sweet. He died of a heart attack in 1997. The other three kept the project going for a long time. However, Mick Tucker died of leukemia in 2002. Steve Priest lives in the US, his musical output seems limited to his private needs. Only Andy Scott is still on the road, he put a new band together still called The Sweet, and he wrote a beautiful word of greeting for this volume. This is by far the largest volume ever published on The Sweet, illustrated and produced with lavish attention to detail, in a large format and in color throughout with just a few exceptions. It contains numerous photographs that have never been published before - a delight for every true fan! Bubi Heilemann provides in-depth information of his time with the band and the photo sessions.         Friday the 13th [Friday 13] (Original screenplay for the 1980 film)

Westport, CT: Sean S. Cunningham Films / Paramount, 1979. Third Draft script for the 1980 film. Copy belonging to actress Adrienne King ("Alice" in the film) with her name in holograph pencil on the title page. SIGNED by director Cunningham on the title page. 1980 was the year of horror films, notably Kubrick's classic "The Shining," De Palma's "Dressed to Kill," and a plethora of Italian Giallo titles from directors like Joe D'Amato, Lucio Fulci, Umberto Lenzi, Dario Argento, and Lamberto Bava. Hidden in the midst of an internationally saturated genre was Sean S. Cunningham's low-budget entry, "Friday the 13th," whose central figure Jason Voorhees would soon define the notion of a "slasher" at the popular level. Jason, part of the holy trinity of modern horror icons that includes Freddy Kreuger (Wes Craven's 1984 "Nightmare on Elm Street") and Michael Myers (John Carpenter's 1978 "Halloween"), is the son of a camp cook/murderer mother, stalking unsuspecting victims everywhere he goes. His trademark hockey mask, an identifying trait not implemented until the third installment, "Friday the 13th Part III" (1982), sets the slasher apart from Freddy Kreuger, who wore a hat, but bears similarity to Carpenter's Michael Myers, who also wore a mask. The hockey mask is arguably the most recognizable image from post-New Hollywood horror cinema, and Jason has inspired comic books, video games, and slasher character crossovers. In this, the first of what would become a twelve-film series, a group of teenagers is reopening the cursed Camp Crystal Lake, where in the summer of 1958 two counselors were murdered by an unknown assailant. The new counselors (including Kevin Bacon) are refurbishing the camp during a storm when murders begin to stack up. Shot on location in Blairstown, New Jersey. White wrappers with paper title label on the front wrapper. Title page present, dated August 21, 1979, noted as THIRD DRAFT, with credits for screenwriter Miller. 78 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 81, and 18 unbound leaves (revisions, crew call sheets). Photographically reproduced. Pages and wrapper Very Good plus, bound internally with three silver brads. Lentz, p. 1118.
