        Recollections. Ten Women of Photography

1979. First Edition . Signed. MITCHELL, Margareta K. Recollections. Ten Women of Photography. New York: Viking, (1979). Quarto, original debossed black cloth, original dust jacket. Laid-in silver gelatin print (8 by 10 inches) inscribed on the verso. $7500.First edition of this tribute to ten leading women photographers: Berenice Abbott, Ruth Bernhard, Carlotta M. Corpron, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Nell Dorr, Toni Frissell, Laura Gilpin, Lotte Jacobi, Consuelo Kanaga and Barbara Morgan. An exceptional presentation copy warmly inscribed by six of the photographers and the author to Anna Winand, long associated with New YorkÂ’s International Center of Photography, which housed the landmark exhibit accompanying this volume: “For Anna, Why canÂ’t I have met you before this farewell. This Hail and Farewell-Nell Dorr”; “For Anna, with good wishes and love, LotteÂ’; “Carlotta M. Corpron”; “Thank you, Anna, Ruth Bernhard, Berenice Abbott”; “For Anna, All best wishes-Barbara Morgan”; “For Anna, With thanks for your presence at ICP! Love from Margaretta.” This copy also with a laid-in silver gelatin print (8 by 10 inches), with “Berenice Abbott” inscribed on the verso by Winand.“Women have been active in photography from its inception,” yet it was not until the 1970s that questions arose about “their relative absence from the principal histories” and major exhibits (Lenman, 688). Leading that reappraisal was a pioneering 1979 exhibit at New YorkÂ’s International Center of Photography (ICP), which showcased ten of the living women photographers celebrated in Recollections, published in conjunction with the exhibit. This handsome volume highlights Berenice AbbottÂ’s New York cityscapes, Ruth BernhardÂ’s evocative nudes, Carlotta CorpronÂ’s luminous studies of light, Louise Dahl-WolfÂ’s crisp fashion photography, Nell DorrÂ’s poetic views of parenthood, Toni FrissellÂ’s powerful coverage of WWII, Laura GilpinÂ’s compelling images of the American Southwest, Consuelo KanagaÂ’s striking work during the Great Depression, Lotte JacobiÂ’s iconic portraiture and Barbara MorganÂ’s sublime images of modern dance. With over 180 photogravure plates; text by Mitchell. With a superb laid-in silver gelatin print inscribed “Berenice Abbott” by Winand on the verso. This rare presentation copy is from the library of Anna Winand, a leading New York critic long affiliated with International Center of Photography.Images fine and bright, light edge-wear to about-fine book; light edge-wear to near-fine dust jacket. An extraordinary presentation copy.

[A Group of Letters, Signed, to Critic Leonard Lyons and Sylvia Lyons, with Retained Copy of a Typed Letter to Orville Faubus]

New Yotk, Bermuda, and n.p., 1979. Consisting of: 4 typed letters, signed, 2 autograph letters, signed, a typed note, signed, an autograph note, signed, and an autograph postcard, signed ("Anita"). Octavo and 12mo, several on Loos's hot pink letterhead, three with original mailing envelopes. Some minor wear and creases from having been mailed, but very good. A sequence of friendly notes and letters from Loos to theatrical critic Leonard Lyons, and his wife, Sylvia Lyons, reading in part: "[30 Nov. 1959] I did not see anything offensive in your story about Gladys's mamma, and I tried to explain to Gladys that the story was a rib at television and not at all directed toward her mamma. However, people are touchy these days ... The whole thing will soon blow over. It was wonderful seeing you and Sylvia on your wedding anniversary ..."; "[23 Jan. 1964] I'm off to Jolie Gabor's Beauty Farm to recuperate from the Arthur Miller play and will call you on return ..."; "[5 Dec. 1966] I believe our Gladys has established some sort of a record by having two books dedicated to her in one season. The latest is Burt Blechman's new novel Maybe. Its dedication reads 'To Anita, Gladys and Miss Moore.' Seeing that I dedicated my own book to her, doesn't this rather mean that Mme. Gladys deKalb is a later-day ... Mme de Stael?"; "[13 Nov. 1967] When you offered us the honor of taking Mrs. Eban to the Plaza Hotel, Dick [Coe] and I were on the spot because ... [the Lowes] had told us to be waiting for Carol directly in front of the stage-door because she would be pulled apart by a mob of fans. As a matter of fact we got to the stage-door just in time to rescue her ... [W]hen we explained the incident to Carol, she gave us hell for not taking you to the Plaza. So we really committed two Faux Pas instead of one ... [O]ur Miss Moore will open on December 7th in Nutcracker with the New York City Ballet Company. To begin her career at nine in a Balanchine production isn't too bad, is it?"; "[30 Jan. 1970] This is to ask if we may add your name to our glamorous Committee for a Supper-Dance to be given May 7th at the Museum ... The ... exhibit ... will honor the Stars of the Theatre, past, present and future. Nedda Harrigan Logan is our Honorary Chairwoman; Ruth Gordon and I, co-Chairwomen. It will be the first big party of Spring; on that night all Broadway will move to Fifth Avenue, and there will be champagne ... You will really have no duties except to lend your name and be proud of the company it keeps ..." Also included is a carbon copy (unsigned) of a jesting typed letter from Loos to Governor Faubus of Little Rock, Arkansas, explaining the history of how an article by H.L. Mencken prompted her to choose "... Little Rock as the birthplace of my ignoramus heroine of 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' ... because I wanted her to come from the lowest possible stratum of intelligence. I thought these good old times were long past and that in spite of everything the Arkansans had learned to read and write and when, today on the front pages of all New York papers, there appeared that historic sign in which the word 'government' is misspelled, I realize the good old days are still with you. I am sure this makes you very happy, so I send my congratulations."

Granta. A Magazine of New Writing. Issues 1 - 20.

Granta. Cambridge and London 1979 - Publisher's printed wraps, as issued. All copies in Fine to near Fine condition. The first twenty issues of the most influential literary magazine of the last quarter-century; from its inception Granta featured the best of contemporary literary prose, travel writing and cultural commentary. Bill Buford and Pete de Bolla first published this 'New Series' whilst at King's College, Cambridge, in 1979; although their magazine had little in common with its older namesake. Their editorial policy ensured the early inclusion of new work from some of the best contemporary writers: issue three featured substantial portions of Salman Rushdie's as yet unpublished 'Midnight's Children' and Russell Hoban's 'Ridley Walker,' both novels to appear later that year. The original editions of the first three issues were not robust productions and are now uncommon; despite one (albeit very small) reprinting, that of the the first issue is of such scarcity that we have handled only two copies in the past two decades (the copy in this set is near-fine and is exceptionally scarce in such condition.) ISSUE 1: 'New American Writing' [Second printing, Autumn 1979]: contributions from Susan Sontag & Joyce Carol Oates et al; ISSUE 2, 'The Portage to San Christobel of A.H.' [First printing]: includes contributions from George Steiner, Walter Abish & John Barth; ISSUE 3: 'The End of the English Novel' [First printing]: includes contributions from Salman Rushdie, Angela Carter, Russell Hoban, Emma Tennant & Alan Sillitoe; ISSUE 4, 'Beyond the Publishing Crisis' [First printing]: includes contributions from Martin Amis, Blake Morrison, Raymond Carver & Mario Vargas Llosa; ISSUE 5, 'The Modern Common Wind' [First printing]: includes contributions from Don Bloch, Russell Hoban (twice), Susan Sontag & T. Coaghessan Boyle; ISSUE 6, 'A Literature for Politics' [First printing]: includes contributions from Milan Kundera, Ariel Dorfman, Uwe Johnson, Jeremy Seabrook & Nadime Gordimer; ISSUE 7, 'Best of Young British Novelists' [First printing]: includes contributions from Pat Barker, Julian Barnes, William Boyd, Kazuo Ishiguro, Adam Mars-Jones, Ian McEwan, Shiva Naipaul, Salman Rushdie, Graham Swift & Rose Tremain; ISSUE 8, 'Dirty Realism: New Writing from America' [First printing]: includes contributions from Michael Herr, Russell Hoban, Richard Ford, Raymond Carver, Tobias Wolff, Angela Carter & Todd McEwen; ISSUE 9, 'Boris' [First printing]: includes contributions from G. Cabrera Infante, Russell Hoban, John Berger, Gabriel Garia Marquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Patrick Marnham, Don McCullin, Sheila Rowbotham & Graham Swift; ISSUE 10, 'Travel Writing' [First printing]: includes contributions from Gabriel Garia Marquez, Russell Hoban, Jonathan Raban, James Fenton, Redmond O'Hanlon, Colin Thubron, Martha Gellhorn, Bruce Chatwin, Richard Holmes, Norman Lewis, Saul Bellow, Patrick Marnham, Jan Morris, Paul Theroux & William Weaver; ISSUE 11, 'Greetings from Prague' [First printing]: includes contributions from Ian McEwan, Milan Kundera, Salman Rushdie, Martha Gellhorn, Gabriel Garia Marquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Don DeLillo, Redmond O'Hanlon & Ariel Dorfman; ISSUE 12, 'The True Adventures of the Rolling Stones' [First printing]: includes contributions from Raymond Carver, Richard Ford, Jayne Anne Phillips, David Caute, Gunter Grass, Gabriel Garia Marquez, Bernard Crick, David Lodge & Mario Vargas Llosa; ISSUE 13, 'After the Revolution' [First printing]: includes contributions from Milan Kundera, Josef Skvorecky, James Fenton, Edward Said, Someth May, John Berger, Doris Lessing, Anita Brookner, Martin Amis, Russell Hoban & Timothy Garton-Ash; ISSUE 14, 'Autobiography' [First printing]: includes contributions from Norman Lewis, Raymond Carver, Beryl Bainbridge, Doris Lessing, William Boyd & Don McCullin; ISSUE 15, 'The Fall of Saigon' [First printing]: includes contributions from George Steiner, Nadine Gordimer, Gunter Grass, Salman Rushdie, John Berger, Ryszard Kapuscinski, [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

A bright clean, copy with fading to spine commonly associated with this book. Plain rear panel. A clean, sharp copy of a milestone book.A modern classic to which many of us owe immense gratitude if only for the manner in which it proved that geeky and funny weren't necessarily polar opposites and could occasionally be found inside the same person, whom hypothetical women might then conceivably want to snog, hypothetically. Mr.Adams, we who found love and acceptance through your humour, thus saving us from a lifetime of shunned solitude and crippling self loathing, salute you.
