Translation of a Comparative Vocabulary of the Chinese, Corean, and Japanese Languages: To Which is Added The Thousand Character Classic The Chinese and Corean; The Whole Accompanied by Copious Indexes, of all the Chinese and English Words. Occuring in the Work....

Tokyo: Yushodo. 1979. Printed on Japanese style folded leaves, stab binding presented in a Japanese folding cloth covered case with toggle ties. New introduction booklet with red ribbon ties loosely inserted. A handsome work in excellent condition. This attractive facsimile is said by some authorities to have been adapted by Walter Henry Medhurst under the pseudonym Philo Sinensis. It was first published at the Parapattan Press in Batavia in 1835 [under the supervision of Walter Henry Medhurst]. This adaptation of a Korean classified vocabulary was apparently accomplished without the help of a Korean speaker. The publication from which it was developed was written for Koreans learning Japanese. The adaptation added romanizations of the Japanese and Korean, deduced from Japanese and English lists. (Lust - Western Books on China).Although standard bibliographies such as Lust 'Western Books on China Published up to 1850' state that Philo Sinensis was the pseudonym of Walter Henry Medhurst, "Philo Sinensis" is usually accepted as the pseudonym used by Carl Gutzlaff at the time and appears in publications such as the Chinese Repository. Its presence is therefore likely to indicate some level of involvement of Carl Gutzlaff. However, most authorities attribute the greater role in the adaptation to Walter Henry Medhurst. Accompanying this copy of the facsimile is a typescript note in English from Nitta Yuji, (founder of Yushodo Booksellers, Tokyo) explaining that he published this facsimile on the occasion of his 70th birthday "in order to share its value to everyone in the scholarly world. It is my hope that this small tribute would be of use." A very fitting contribution to the scholarly world indeed. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 142690)....

Codex Vaticanus 3738 (Cod Vat A, Cod Rios) der Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana

Graz: Akademische Druck and Verlagasanstalt, 1979 [i-viii]+96 pages of the reproduction of the codex. Folio (13 3/4" x 10") bound in quarter brown leather with brown lettering to spine and cover over beige boards. Codices Selecti Volume LXV; Codices E Vaticanis Selecti Volumen XXVI. First edition of the publication.Codex Rios. Codex Vaticanus A. Codex Vaticanus 3738. Biblioteca Apostoica Vaticana, Rome. Ritual calendarical, historical and ethnographic. Valley of Mexico. c1566-89 on European paper with 101 leaves (48 x 29 cm). Codex Rios and Codex Telleriano-Remensis are currently believed to be copies of a common original, the lost Codex Hutzilopochtli. Codex Rios is believed to have been copied by a non-Indian artist in Italy and its long Italian texts to be based on a commentary by Friar Pedro de los Rios. The date 1566 occurs in the text as a reference to a past event; the paper appears not to have been made until 1569-70. The manuscript has seven major sections: (1) cosmogenic and mythological traditions with some emphasis on the four epochs and including notices about Quetzalcoatl and the Toltecs, (2) a 260-day divinatory almanac, (3) calendrical tables without drawings for the years 1558-1619, (4) an 18-month festival calendar with drawings of the gods of each period, (5) sacrificial and other customs including portraits of Indian types, (6) pictorial annals for the years 1195-62 beginning with the migration from Chicomoztoc and covering later events in the Valley of Mexico, and (7) year glyphs for the years 1556-62 without written or pictorial entries. Most of the codex has a long written commentary in Italian, but only three pages of the historical section are annotated. Details from four pages were published in Cartari (1615). These were obtained by the editor, Pignoria, from Octavio Malipiero and had formerly been owned by Cardinal Amulio, the Vatican librarian. A detail from the fifth page which appears in a later edition (1626) was obtained from Filippo Winghernio. Paso y Troncoso identifies these details as copied form the Codex Rios and not from Codex Telleriano-Remensis or from Codex Huitzilopochtli. Twelve pages were reproduced by Humboldt (1810). The first edition was by Kingsborough (1831-48) with paleography and English translation of the Italian text. Innumerable studies of Mexican Indian religion have commented on the cosmological section of the manuscript, particularly its drawings of the four world eras (Handbook of Middle American Indians volume 14 186-7).Condition:Light soiling, corners gently rubbed else a near fine copy.

Geschichtliche Grundbegriffe. 8 Bände in 9 Bänden. Historisches Lexikon zur politisch-sozialen Sprache in Deutschland.

Stuttgart: Klett-Cotta, 1979 - Gute Exemplare, Band 2 ohne Schutzumschlag. - Führende Wissenschaftler vieler Fakultäten (u. a. A Bend in the River

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1979. First edition, first printing. Not Set. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to upper board and spine gilt. With the dust jacket Cloth a trifle marked but a very good copy in the somewhat beaten-up dust jacket. A presentation copy with the author's typically terse presentation inscription to the title page, "V S. Naipaul for Al Murray". Naipaul recalls in A Turn in the South, "I was given the name of a writer who had been educated at Tuskegee, Al Murray. He was, or had been, a protégé of Ralph Ellison's, and he lived in New Yorkâ?¦He was a brown man, and older than I had thoughtâ?¦Al had just turned seventyâ?¦His sitting room was full of books and records. A moment's looking showed that the books were a serious collection of twentieth-century American writing in first or very early editions."Al Murray, a Tuskegee-educated writer on jazz and one of those interviewed in "A Turn in the South," would later say, "Naipaul is like a satellite in orbit. He's got an objectivity that no one else has, and he knows that the past is an albatross." Proper inscribed, literary association copies of Naipaul's works are distinctly uncommon.

The tension between Kitajima's flamboyant, contrasty, edgy monochrome and his matter-of-fact, understated colour makes this one of the most distinctive books in the wide bibliography on Shinjuku nightlife."
