Ratificatio facta p[er] m[agnifi]cu[m] d[ominum] Jo[hannes] Carolu[s] de Affaytalis, in favorem m[agnifi]ci et r[everen]di d[omino]. Guidi d[e] Crema et Rafaelis Krumani p[e]r Castro S[anc]ti Laurentii et terris.Antwerp, 20 January 1546. Manuscript notarial document in Latin, written in a Latin hand on one side of a single piece of sheepskin parchment (31 x 54.5 cm), opening with a large capital and closing with the notary's decorative signature, with the title and "M. Johan Carlo" on the back. Folded and loosely inserted in a paper folder (ca. 1690s?).

For Affaitati: Kellenbenz, “Die Konkurrenten der Fugger als bankiers der Spanischen Krone”, in: Zeitsch. Unternehmensgeschichte XXIV (1979), pp. 81-98. An Antwerp notarial declaration made voluntarily by Giovan Carlo Affaitati, also known as Johannes Carolus de Affaytadi (Cremona 1500 or 1510-Lier 1555 or Ghistelle 1587) soon after he moved to Antwerp, on behalf of Guido de Crema, citizen of Mantua, and Raphael Brumani, citizen of Cremona. It was drawn up before the Antwerp notary Anthony Amala and three named witnesses and appears to concern De Crema and Brumani's inheritance. Affaitati testified to the content of a document drawn up on 31 December 1545 before the Mantua notary Hieronimus de Zizolis. Affitati came from a merchant banking family in Cremona. He set up in Lisbon but moved to Antwerp in 1545, when the Holy Roman Emperor Karl V made him Baron of Ghistelle. He was active in the spice trade and is said to have been the most important financier of the wars of the Holy Roman Emperor Karl V and King Philip II of Spain.Formerly folded to a smaller size, leaving traces of the old folds, but still in very good condition. A primary document recording Karl V's financier in Antwerp, only months after he moved there.

        Endgame.

London: Faber and Faber,, 1979. A Play in one Act followed by Act Without Words, A Mime for one Player. Translated from the original French by the author. Octavo. Original photographic paper wrappers, titles to spine black on white, to front cover white. Slight creasing to spine, light toning to margins; an excellent copy. Superb presentation copy inscribed to David Mamet by the author on the title page, "for David, with all good wishes, Sam Beckett". This copy, which is a reprint of the second edition, also has Mamet's card laid in, inscribed "Greetings and love from Copenhagen. September 1977, D.M." This book first came to market after Mamet's divorce from his first wife the actress Lindsay Crouse in 1990, and a subsequent library sale through Strand, New York. This card was inscribed, presumably to her, in the year their married, and evidently found its way back into this copy. This is an excellent theatrical association for Beckett, and notably early in Mamet's career. The Pulitzer Prize winning author of Lakeboat (1970) said in 1977, "Beckett and Pinter - of course I'm influenced by them". Buning adds, "Mamet is influenced by Beckett, because, as it were, he can't help it".

Folio. With engraved frontispiece, 1 folding map with travel routes in Japan, 20 double-page and 4 larger folding engraved plates, and 71 half-page engravings in the text. Early 18-century tanned sheepskin, gold-tooled spine with label; rebacked with the original backstrip laid down.

Cordier, Japonica, col. 383; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 522; Tiele, Bibl. 762; cf. V. Eeghen, "Arnoldus Montanus's book on Japan," in: Quaerendo II (1979), pp. 250-272. Second edition (often erroneously described as the first) of Montanus's very detailed and thoroughly illustrated account of Japan, containing the first known printed images of the small island of Dejima, in Nagasaki harbour, the Japanese outpost of the VOC (Dutch East India Company), connected to the mainland by a bridge. The title-page notes that the book is based on the manuscripts and notes of the VOC delegations (to the Shogun), and that the illustrations were drawn in Japan. The folding map shows the sea route along the coast from Nagasaki to Osaka andthe land route along the coast from Osaka to Yedo (Tokyo). The four folding views show profiles of the cities of Osaka, Miaco (Kyoto), Yedo and Kagoshima. The double-page plates showing the plan of the city of Batavia in the Dutch East Indies, the island of Dejima and the castle at Osaka, and the half-page view of the quarters at Firando (p. 28) are particularly important as authentic sources, never before published. From 1641 the Dutch were the only foreigners allowed to trade with Japan, although subject to rigid restrictions outside the VOC outpost on Dejima island. They had to renew permission to trade with Japan annually, for which they sent a delegation from Dejima to the Shogun in Yedo. Montanus based the present work on the unpublished reports of these journeys, from the VOC archives. Montanus also digresses onto the subjects of Japanese religion, history and natural history. Rebacked as noted and binding scuffed but structurally sound. Frontispiece slightly thumbed and some minor smudges throughout, otherwise in very good condition.

Nederduytsche poemata.Amsterdam, Willem Jansz. Blaeu, 1616. 4to. With engraved allegorical title-page and 66 engraved illustrations, all on integral leaves and mostly emblematic, by Crispijn de Passe, his two sons Crispijn Jr. and Simon, Michel le Blon after Jacob de Gheyn, and Jacob Matham after David Vinckboons. Late 19th-century gold-tooled dark brown morocco by Henri-Joseph Pierson, each board with the crowned and supported arms of Victor Masséna (1836-1910) in Paris , Prince d'Essling and Duc de Rivoli.

De la Fontaine Verwey, "Willem Jansz en de Nederlandse emblematiek. I. Daniel Heinsius als Nederlands dichter", in: Uit de wereld van het boek, III (1979), pp. 97-113, esp. pp. 108-109; Franken, De Passe 1348. First issue of the second and best edition of Daniel Heinsius's poetical works in Dutch, edited by Petrus Scriverius and probably published in the second half of 1616. The first edition, using all of the present copper plates, had appeared around the beginning of the year, but the typesetting and layout were so sloppy that Scriverius had to add an extensive list of corrigenda and convinced Blaeu to produce the present corrected edition. This handsome book, containing the collected Dutch poems of the famous Leiden professor and Neo-Latin and Dutch poet Daniel Heisius (1580-1655), was edited by the famous humanist and scholar Petrus Scriverius (1576-1660). It was a milestone in the history of Dutch literature, introducing a new and more Renaissance orientated style and vocabulary, and promoting the acceptance of Dutch as a literary language. With a later bookplate. Very good copy with an interesting provenance. Washed, and with tears repaired in 2 leaves, slightly affecting the text, but generally in very good condition. Binding fine, with only very slight wear at the edges of the boards and spine.

      - For Affaitati: Kellenbenz, "Die Konkurrenten der Fugger als bankiers der Spanischen Krone", in: Zeitsch.

Translation of a Comparative Vocabulary of the Chinese, Corean, and Japanese Languages: To Which is Added The Thousand Character Classic The Chinese and Corean; The Whole Accompanied by Copious Indexes, of all the Chinese and English Words. Occuring in the Work.

Tokyo: Yushodo.. Number 25 of a Limited Edition of 100 copies.. 1979.. Printed on Japanese style folded leaves, stab binding presented in a Japanese folding cloth covered case with toggle ties. New introduction booklet with red ribbon ties loosely inserted. A handsome work in excellent condition. This attractive facsimile is said by some authorities to have been adapted by Walter Henry Medhurst under the pseudonym Philo Sinensis. It was first published at the Parapattan Press in Batavia in 1835 [under the supervision of Walter Henry Medhurst]. This adaptation of a Korean classified vocabulary was apparently accomplished without the help of a Korean speaker. The publication from which it was developed was written for Koreans learning Japanese. The adaptation added romanizations of the Japanese and Korean, deduced from Japanese and English lists. (Lust - Western Books on China). Although standard bibliographies such as Lust 'Western Books on China Published up to 1850' state that Philo Sinensis was the pseudonym of Walter Henry Medhurst, ?Philo Sinensis? is usually accepted as the pseudonym used by Carl Gutzlaff at the time and appears in publications such as the Chinese Repository. Its presence is therefore likely to indicate some level of involvement of Carl Gutzlaff. However, most authorities attribute the greater role in the adaptation to Walter Henry Medhurst. Accompanying this copy of the facsimile is a typescript note in English from Nitta Yuji, (founder of Yushodo Booksellers, Tokyo) explaining that he published this facsimile on the occasion of his 70th birthday "in order to share its value to everyone in the scholarly world. It is my hope that this small tribute would be of use." A very fitting contribution to the scholarly world indeed. .

      - De la Fontaine Verwey, "Willem Jansz en de Nederlandse emblematiek. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Various flowers. (On verso): a sketch of a grape branch with grapes and leaves].[Netherlands, 17th century]. Drawings (48.8 x 28.9-29.2 cm). Black chalk drawings, occasionally heightened with white chalk, including some light brown watercolours, on grey 17th-century handmade paper without watermark. In manuscript 'Martagon' in brown ink. In lower right corner in manuscript the number "3" in ink. Framed.

Cf. Bernt, Die niederländischen Maler und Zeichner des 17. Jahrhunderts, vol. 4, nr. 209 (München 1979); Schatborn, 'Een toeschrijving aan Govert Flinck', in: Bulletin van het Rijksmuseum 22 nr. 2/3 (1974), pp. 111-121. We have not succeeded in identifying the artist of these beautiful drawings. We know no other drawing that is clearly from the same hand. Two artists are mentioned as possible candidates, Govert Flinck (Cleves 1615-1660 Amsterdam) and Gerbrand van den Eeckhout (1621 - Amsterdam - 1674). The present drawings are probably made around the middle of the 17th century in Holland. The composition is similar to some papers in florilegia, such as Theodor de Bry (1611/1612 to 1641 and later), but they never show so many species and the flowers on a sheet. This study could be a sketch for a painting, not necessarily a floral still life, possibly a landscape. In fine condition.
