The World's Greatest Superheroes: multi-panel page of original Sunday newspaper strip artwork by George Tuska, black ink on Strathmore paper. Marked, upper left, "76, Sunday, 9/16"

New York: D.C. Comics, Inc, 1979. 1 vols. 16 x 22 inches. Fine. George Tuska. 1 vols. 16 x 22 inches. A vigorous multi-panel drawing, by Tuska, fully lettered, of the exploits of the first and greatest superhero, featuring Perscilla Pertwillie. Tuska specialized in particularly intense action scenes; he also illustrated such series as Green Lantern, Teen Titans, Justice League, Infinity, and Power Man. A fine, original example of 1970s action comic art. George Tuska finished his studies at the National Academy School of Art at age 21. In 1939, he became John Terry's assistant on 'Scorchy Smith'. At the same time, he joined the graphic studios of Jerry Iger and Will Eisner. There he worked on several comic books, like 'Jungle', 'Wings', 'Planet Wonderworld' and 'Mystery Men'. In the 1940s, Tuska created the character 'Hercule' for Quality Comics and, as a member of Studio Chesler, he drew several episodes of 'Captain Marvel', 'Golden Arrow', 'Uncle Sam' and 'El Carim'. Tuska was mobilized during World War II, so he had to postpone his comic activities. After the war, he continued in the comic field with 'The Crime Does Not Pay', and as the illustrator on 'Scorchy Smith'. In 1959, he took over the daily and weekly 'Buck Rogers' pages, which he continued until 1967. In the late 1960s, Tuska started working for Marvel, where he contributed to the series 'Ghost Rider', 'Planet of the Apes', 'X-Men', 'Daredevil' and 'Iron Man'. He continued drawing superhero comics for DC, like 'Superman', 'Superboy' and 'Challengers of the Unknown'. In 1978, along with José Delbo, Paul Kupperberg and Martin Pasko, Tuska started a new version of the daily 'Superman' comic. Tuska worked on this series until 1993.

Eeuwigduurende almanach 1815[-1823].[The Netherlands, 1814?]. Oblong 4to (19 x 24 cm). Engraved perpetual almanac (engraved image 17.8 x 22.0 cm) with three engraved roundel scenes with windows cut out of them to view engraved dials mounted behind them that can be set to show the year (ranging from 1815 to 1823), the month (also the zodiac sign, the hour of sunrise and sunset, and the length of the day and night) and the days of the week (showing 7 days of the month simultaneously, each with the day of the week and one of the five planets or the sun or moon). The main engraving and the three dials mounted on millboard, each dial turning on a brass pin secured in a small iron plate, and the main engraving partly coloured in red, blue, green and black. In a contemporary wooden frame (21 x 26 cm), with 3 holes cut in the backing board for setting the dials.

Nothing similar found in Grand-Carteret; Köhring; KVK & WorldCat; NCC; Vandenhole, Inventaris van almanakken en kalenders (1979). A unique engraved perpetual "almanac" (we would now call it a wall calendar) with three dials, the year dial for use in the years 1815 to 1823, so probably published around October or November 1814 for use in the new year. We have found no record of this or any similar calendar. The three dials are mounted behind roundel scenes with windows cut out of them to reveal the date and other information set using the dials. Those for the year and the days of the week have one window each to show one year and 7 days of the week, so that the calendar would normally be set only once a week. In a month with less than 31 days, the dial for the days of the week would require an extra adjustment during the last week to skip the extraneous day or days. The month dial has 6 windows: if one sets it to the month it also shows the number of days in the month (in the same window as the month itself), the zodiac sign for that month, the hour of sunrise and sunset and the number of hours in the day and night. The scenes in the roundels are traditional Dutch views whose general style dates back to the 17th century, but we have not identified specific models. The large (10.5 cm diameter) roundel for the month on the right shows a three-masted ship in full sail with 6 cannons visible on the port side, flying the Dutch flag, and several ships in the background. These are all scenes of production, trade and commerce, suggesting it might have been intended for a merchant's office, but it might also have hung on the wall or a door in a private home. With a few small abrasions in the sky of the ship scene and minor stains and dirt, mostly in the open areas at the head, but still in good condition. With one corner of the frame chipped and some gaps in the gilding. A unique engraved, illustrated perpetual wall calendar, with three dials.

Important Typed Letter Signed on "Secretary of State" letterhead

Washington, D.C., 1979. unbound. 1 page, 10.5 x 8 inches, Washington, D.C., June 19, 1979. Written to George Ball, former Under Secretary of State under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, informing him that President Carter would like him to review the prospectus relevant to the "newly signed" Salt Treaty, in full: "As you know, the President and President Brezhnev have signed a new strategic arms limitation treaty between the United States and the Soviet Union. In review of the critical importance of this undertaking, the President wanted you to see and review the relevant documents at the earliest opportunity. I am enclosing advance texts of the Treaty and the Protocol to the Treaty (with their associated Agreed Statements and Common Understandings); the Joint Statement of Principles and Basic Guidelines for Subsequent Negotiations on the Limitation of Strategic Arms; A Memorandum Regarding the Establishment of a Data Base on the Numbers of Strategic Offensive Arms (together with a Statement of Data on the Numbers of Strategic Offensive Arms as of the date of signature of the Treaty); and a Soviet Statement on Backfire. The President will transmit the official texts of these documents to the Senate upon his return from Vienna. I hope that you will give these documents your most careful consideration." George Ball (1909 - 1994) was Under Secretary of State 1961 to 1966. He is remembered as the only dissenter against the escalation of the Vietnam War. He shaped American policy regarding trade expansion, the Congo, the Multilateral Force, policy toward de Gaulle France, Israel and the Middle East, and the Iranian Revolution. George Ball knew Cyrus Vance when the later was Deputy Secretary of Defense under President Johnson and both were very influential in augmenting American Foreign Policy, as both had the ear of the President. At the time this letter was written, the Carter Administration had provided Ball with some of the greatest military secrets of the United States and the Soviet Union, yet he did not possess even the minimal of Security Clearances. Paperclip impression and gentle browning at the top; unfolded and in very good condition. United States Secretary of State under President Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1980. Prior to that position, he was the Secretary of the Army and the Deputy Secretary of Defense.
