Folio. With engraved frontispiece, 1 folding map with travel routes in Japan, 20 double-page and 4 larger folding engraved plates, and 71 half-page engravings in the text. Early 18-century tanned sheepskin, gold-tooled spine with label; rebacked with the original backstrip laid down.

      - Cordier, Japonica, col. 383; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 522; Tiele, Bibl. 762; cf. V. Eeghen, "Arnoldus Montanus's book on Japan," in: Quaerendo II (1979), pp. 250-272. Second edition (often erroneously described as the first) of Montanus's very detailed and thoroughly illustrated account of Japan, containing the first known printed images of the small island of Dejima, in Nagasaki harbour, the Japanese outpost of the VOC (Dutch East India Company), connected to the mainland by a bridge. The title-page notes that the book is based on the manuscripts and notes of the VOC delegations (to the Shogun), and that the illustrations were drawn in Japan. The folding map shows the sea route along the coast from Nagasaki to Osaka andthe land route along the coast from Osaka to Yedo (Tokyo). The four folding views show profiles of the cities of Osaka, Miaco (Kyoto), Yedo and Kagoshima. The double-page plates showing the plan of the city of Batavia in the Dutch East Indies, the island of Dejima and the castle at Osaka, and the half-page view of the quarters at Firando (p. 28) are particularly important as authentic sources, never before published. From 1641 the Dutch were the only foreigners allowed to trade with Japan, although subject to rigid restrictions outside the VOC outpost on Dejima island. They had to renew permission to trade with Japan annually, for which they sent a delegation from Dejima to the Shogun in Yedo. Montanus based the present work on the unpublished reports of these journeys, from the VOC archives. Montanus also digresses onto the subjects of Japanese religion, history and natural history. Rebacked as noted and binding scuffed but structurally sound. Frontispiece slightly thumbed and some minor smudges throughout, otherwise in very good condition.

[Various flowers. (On verso): a sketch of a grape branch with grapes and leaves].[Netherlands, 17th century]. Drawings (48.8 x 28.9-29.2 cm). Black chalk drawings, occasionally heightened with white chalk, including some light brown watercolours, on grey 17th-century handmade paper without watermark. In manuscript 'Martagon' in brown ink. In lower right corner in manuscript the number "3" in ink. Framed.

Cf. Bernt, Die niederländischen Maler und Zeichner des 17. Jahrhunderts, vol. 4, nr. 209 (München 1979); Schatborn, 'Een toeschrijving aan Govert Flinck', in: Bulletin van het Rijksmuseum 22 nr. 2/3 (1974), pp. 111-121. We have not succeeded in identifying the artist of these beautiful drawings. We know no other drawing that is clearly from the same hand. Two artists are mentioned as possible candidates, Govert Flinck (Cleves 1615-1660 Amsterdam) and Gerbrand van den Eeckhout (1621 - Amsterdam - 1674). The present drawings are probably made around the middle of the 17th century in Holland. The composition is similar to some papers in florilegia, such as Theodor de Bry (1611/1612 to 1641 and later), but they never show so many species and the flowers on a sheet. This study could be a sketch for a painting, not necessarily a floral still life, possibly a landscape. In fine condition.

British Intelligence in the Second World War: Its Influence on Strategy and Operations, in Six Volumes (History of the Second World War United Kingdom Military Series)

xiii, 601; xv, 850; xv, 693; xv, 1038; xii, 408; xiii, 271 pp. 8vo. A history of England's intelligence and counter-intelligence efforts during World War II, and the effects these efforts had on Allied strategy overall. Compiled by a number of men directly involved in various aspects of it, from codes and ciphers, to naval intelligence, to scientific intelligence and the development of experimental weaponry. The set was released volume by volume between 1979 and 1990. Fold-out maps throughout text. From the jacket: "... provides the only reliable account yet published - or ever likely to be published - of the part played by British Intelligence in Allied strategy and operations in the Second World War. No such account could have been written without the unrestricted access which was afforded to Professor Hinsley and his colleagues to the full range of British government intelligence records and to political and military archives of the war and the inter-war years... The first three volumes of the series [deal] with the influence of intelligence on strategy and operations. Volume 4 analyses the contribution made by Intelligence to the work of the authorities responsible for countering the threats of subversion, sabotage and intelligence-gathering by the enemy in the United Kingdom and British territories overseas, and against Allied forces in the field and British interests in neutral countries. It describes the evolution of the security intelligence agencies between the wars and the security situation in September 1939... Volume 5... brings the series to an end. It complements Volume 4 which describes the activities of Nazi Agents who had been persuaded to work for the Allies by considering how their work for the Allied side was turned to direct military advantage."KEYWORDS: MILITARY WWII WW2 SECOND WORLD WAR II TOP SECRET OPERATIONS PRICE IS FOR THIS SET PLUS THE REST OF THE 'HISTORY OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR UNITED KINGDOM' SET (92 VOLUMES TOTAL). 2nd printing of volume 1, first printings of all other volumes.         Superman: multi-panel page of original Sunday newspaper strip artwork by George Tuska, black ink on Strathmore paper. Dated, upper left, "Sunday,12-17"

New York: D.C. Comics, Inc, 1979. 1 vols. 16 x 22 inches. Fine. 1 vols. 16 x 22 inches. A vigorous multi-panel drawing, by Tuska, fully lettered, of the exploits of the first and greatest superhero. Tuska specialized in particularly intense action scenes; he also illustrated such series as Green Lantern, Teen Titans, Justice League, Infinity, and Power Man. A fine, original example of 1970s action comic art. George Tuska finished his studies at the National Academy School of Art at age 21. In 1939, he became John Terry's assistant on 'Scorchy Smith'. At the same time, he joined the graphic studios of Jerry Iger and Will Eisner. There he worked on several comic books, like 'Jungle', 'Wings', 'Planet Wonderworld' and 'Mystery Men'. In the 1940s, Tuska created the character 'Hercule' for Quality Comics and, as a member of Studio Chesler, he drew several episodes of 'Captain Marvel', 'Golden Arrow', 'Uncle Sam' and 'El Carim'. Tuska was mobilized during World War II, so he had to postpone his comic activities. After the war, he continued in the comic field with 'The Crime Does Not Pay', and as the illustrator on 'Scorchy Smith'. In 1959, he took over the daily and weekly 'Buck Rogers' pages, which he continued until 1967. In the late 1960s, Tuska started working for Marvel, where he contributed to the series 'Ghost Rider', 'Planet of the Apes', 'X-Men', 'Daredevil' and 'Iron Man'. He continued drawing superhero comics for DC, like 'Superman', 'Superboy' and 'Challengers of the Unknown'. In 1978, along with José Delbo, Paul Kupperberg and Martin Pasko, Tuska started a new version of the daily 'Superman' comic. Tuska worked on this series until 1993.

        The book of the hackle.

      - Edinburgh, Scottish Academy Press, 1979. 8vo (23.2 x 14.8 cm). xi, 140 pp., coloured frontispiece, six peculiar plates with original hackles including 29 different types. Original red morocco in original slipcase (25.0 x 16.1 x 3.1 cm) by A. Lumsden. Gilt edges.l On artificial insects which are largely based on Ephemeroptera (Mayflies) in morphology and "behaviour". One of 85 numbered copies, of which this is no. 55, in a fine fresh copy. "My father's interest in dry-fly fishing for trout developed within him an interest in breeding poultry to provide the feathers which have the essential qualities necessary to keep the artificial fly floating on the surface of the water. In the last fifteen years or so of his life, during which he bred poultry exclusively for this purpose, he was forced to ask fundamental questions not only about how different characteristics and colours could be produced through selective breeding but more fundamentally, what exactly is a "good" hackle and what purpose is the hackle on a dry-fly intended to fulfil" (from the introduction). This edition should not be confused with the cheaper one without real hackles. A very good copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Eeuwigduurende almanach 1815[-1823].[The Netherlands, 1814?]. Oblong 4to (19 x 24 cm). Engraved perpetual almanac (engraved image 17.8 x 22.0 cm) with three engraved roundel scenes with windows cut out of them to view engraved dials mounted behind them that can be set to show the year (ranging from 1815 to 1823), the month (also the zodiac sign, the hour of sunrise and sunset, and the length of the day and night) and the days of the week (showing 7 days of the month simultaneously, each with the day of the week and one of the five planets or the sun or moon). The main engraving and the three dials mounted on millboard, each dial turning on a brass pin secured in a small iron plate, and the main engraving partly coloured in red, blue, green

      - Nothing similar found in Grand-Carteret; Köhring; KVK & WorldCat; NCC; Vandenhole, Inventaris van almanakken en kalenders (1979). A unique engraved perpetual "almanac" (we would now call it a wall calendar) with three dials, the year dial for use in the years 1815 to 1823, so probably published around October or November 1814 for use in the new year. We have found no record of this or any similar calendar. The three dials are mounted behind roundel scenes with windows cut out of them to reveal the date and other information set using the dials. Those for the year and the days of the week have one window each to show one year and 7 days of the week, so that the calendar would normally be set only once a week. In a month with less than 31 days, the dial for the days of the week would require an extra adjustment during the last week to skip the extraneous day or days. The month dial has 6 windows: if one sets it to the month it also shows the number of days in the month (in the same window as the month itself), the zodiac sign for that month, the hour of sunrise and sunset and the number of hours in the day and night. The scenes in the roundels are traditional Dutch views whose general style dates back to the 17th century, but we have not identified specific models. The large (10.5 cm diameter) roundel for the month on the right shows a three-masted ship in full sail with 6 cannons visible on the port side, flying the Dutch flag, and several ships in the background. These are all scenes of production, trade and commerce, suggesting it might have been intended for a merchant's office, but it might also have hung on the wall or a door in a private home. With a few small abrasions in the sky of the ship scene and minor stains and dirt, mostly in the open areas at the head, but still in good condition. With one corner of the frame chipped and some gaps in the gilding. A unique engraved, illustrated perpetual wall calendar, with three dials.

He then discusses his work at hand: "I'm pleased with RIVER NOTES, the second book in the trilogy that began with DESERT NOTES. A vigorous multi-panel drawing, by Tuska, fully lettered, of the exploits of the first and greatest superhero, featuring Perscilla Pertwillie.

Original dust jacket is price-clipped and has a few small nicks and tears to the top and a little rubbing to front and rear panels. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The main engraving and the three dials mounted on millboard, each dial turning on a brass pin secured in a small iron plate, and the main engraving partly coloured in red, blue, green and black. In a contemporary wooden frame (21 x 26 cm), with 3 holes cut in the backing board for setting the dials.

Nothing similar found in Grand-Carteret; Köhring; KVK & WorldCat; NCC; Vandenhole, Inventaris van almanakken en kalenders (1979).
