Broca’s Brain: Reflections on the Romance of Science.

New York: Random House, 1979. First edition of this work, in which Sagan explores and explains a mind-boggling future of intelligent robots and extraterrestrial life and its consequences. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by Carl Sagan on the half-title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket illustration by Jon Lomberg. Jacket design by Robert Aulicino. Uncommon signed. Broca's Brain is a collection of essays written by astrophysicist Carl Sagan. Its chapters were originally articles published between 1974 and 1979 in various magazines, including The Atlantic Monthly, The New Republic, Physics Today, Playboy and Scientific American. The title essay is named in honor of the French physician, anatomist and anthropologist, Paul Broca (1824-1880). He is best known for his discovery that different functions are assigned to different parts of the brain. He believed that by studying the brains of cadavers and correlating the known experiences of the former owners of the organs, human behavior could eventually be discovered and understood. To that end, he saved hundreds of human brains in jars of formalin; among the collection is his own neural organ. When Sagan finds it in Musee de l'Homme, he poses questions that challenge some core ideas of human existence such as "How much of that man known as Paul Broca can still be found in this jar?" - a question that evokes both religious and scientific argument.

        Our Day And Generation

U.S.A.: Simon & Schuster 1979 - A fine first edition in a fine dust jacket, inscribed by Kennedy in 1982 and also signed by Tip O'Neill, on the front free endpaper. Complete row of numbers to 1 on the copyright page and original price of $12.95 on the front flap. A collection of extracts from Kennedy's speeches, published in 1979, a year after he reached his Senate peak as Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. This book was clearly a calculated part of his effort in 1979 and 1980 to run for President of the United States. After years of delay in the shadow of the Chappaquiddick tragedy in 1969, Kennedy finally decided to seek the Democratic nomination in the 1980 presidential election by launching an unusual, insurgent campaign against the incumbent Carter, a member of his own party. A midsummer 1978 poll had shown Democrats preferring Kennedy over Carter by a 5-to-3 margin. During spring and summer 1979, as Kennedy deliberated whether to run (and published this book of his speeches), Carter was not intimidated despite his 28 percent approval rating, saying publicly: "If Kennedy runs, I'll whip his ass." And he did. Kennedy formally announced his campaign on November 7, 1979, at Boston's Faneuil Hall. He had already received substantial negative press from a rambling response to the question "Why do you want to be President?" during an interview with Roger Mudd of CBS News broadcast a few days earlier. More importantly, Kennedy's disgraceful behavior at Chappaquiddick 10 years earlier came back to haunt him. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

New York: Atheneum, 1979. Fine. Typescript copy. Loose quarto sheets. 134pp. Near fine with a light wear and oxidation marks on the first sheet. Accompanied by a TNS from Atheneum poetry editor Harry Ford to Daniel Hoffman: "Here's the typescript copy of Bill Merwin's book of translations which we'll be publishing in September. Hoffman served as the Consultant in Poetry of the Library of Congress (the equivalent of the United States Poet Laureate) in 1973-1974 and published several additional books of poetry and literary scholarship. Hoffman appears to have typed a three-page table of contents on the rectos of Swarthmore College Library list from 1968. An interesting artifact connecting two noted American poets.

6 eigenh. (Bild-)Postkarten und 5 ms. Briefe mit eigenh. U.

Ottobrunn, Honolulu, Delos u. a. O., 1970-1979. - 8 SS. (Br. v. 20. VIII. 1979). - Die mit zahlreichen eh. Korrekturen versehenen Briefe auf Briefpapier mit gedr. Briefkopf, die Postkarten mit Ansichten von Hawaii, Delos, dem Bienek-Portrait von David Hockney sowie einer Holzplastik von Tut-Ench-Amun. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Handwritten Manuscript Lyrics of Dreamin'

1979. Near fine. Debbie Harry's handwritten manuscript (fair copy), titled at the top, and signed twice, of Dreaming Is Free, her brawny and lusty, gold selling single. The complete lyrics, all in her own handwriting, 27 lines (169 words), in blue ink, all of them on the recto side of an 8 1/2" X 13" sheet of yellow paper. Celestial Debbie has sealed her signature at the end with a kiss in pink lipstick. Ably framed (UV) with a color photograph of D. H. (white skirt and top, hands in pockets, head tilted, big smile). Lightening of the ink in a few places, otherwise fine condition, and this MS is so fair to behold, that if I had a tail, I'd wag it. Dreamin' was the lead single from Blondie's 4th album, Eat to the Beat, a red hot, new wave, punk rock hit, a sorceress' mix of beauty and power, from the "Buddy Holly/Rave On" school of songwriting, released in the gentler days of punk, just before the '70s gave way to the body piercing generation of living wind chimes, whose only fear was a junkyard magnet. The manuscript was gifted to a poorly promoted and lightly attended charity auction in 1992 and she came away from the encounter soured by the experience. So if you plan to get your own Debbie Harry manuscript, you better start stalking her right now, and be sure to come equipped with a donut for bait, a 3 layer blindfold, a rag soaked in chloroform, and a trunk lid that won't open from the inside.
