Good as Gold

New York: Simon and Schuster,, 1979. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine gilt, yellow endpapers. With the dust jacket. An excellent copy in the dust jacket very slightly faded at the spine. First edition, first printing. THE FLIGHT TO LUCIFER: A GNOSTIC FANTASY

New York City, NY: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1979. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1979. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 240 pages. The author's debut and only novel. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Harold Bloom's first and only novel, an epic set in another world, where time has been arrested and where the conflicts of the ancient world still prevail. Harold Bloom's greatest love is literature, especially Shakespeare. His obsession, on the other hand, is religion, particularly American Gnosticism. His arresting insight, that what we really have in America is an anti-materialistic Gnostic religion (examined in his great book, "The American Religion"), is given literary, counter-narrative expression in this mythical novel. Bloom, ever precise with words, explicitly calls it a "Gnostic fantasy" (rather than a novel). One of the central beliefs of Gnosticism centers around Lucifer and the problem of evil in Creation. Another great Gnostic novelist/critic sums it up beautifully: "How can there be such monstrousness in the world if a good God created it? The Gnostic answer is that there is not one Creator but two. The true God is concealed in His realm of light. The affairs of the material world are handled by the secondary Creator God, the Demiurge. The Demiurge is powerful and bars humanity's way to its true purpose. In Gnostic imagery, he is the jailer who holds us all captive in the prison of matter. Only escape from the prison of the body leads the soul into the otherworldly realm of light. At most, sparks of this light are scattered in the material world" (Vladimir Nabokov). Ours is an imperfect, hence often evil, world at best (rather than a "fallen" one). "Goodness" and "beauty" are the masks worn by Lucifer's children. A "must-have" title for Harold Bloom and Czeslaw Milosz collectors. This presentation copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, dated (in the month and year of publication), and inscribed in blue pen on the front free endpaper by the author: "For Czeslaw Milosz, This Gnostic novel in homage & friendship. Harold Bloom. 12 Oct 1979". Bloom is subtly alluding to Milosz's nihilism being one and the same as Gnosticism. This title is now highly collectible. This is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online, a matchless association copy: Milosz, one of the greatest writers of the 20th century and Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1980, and Harold Bloom, our greatest living literary critic. Czeslaw Milosz died on August 14, 2004 at the age of 93, the last of the constellation of great Polish nihilist writers such as Bruno Schulz, Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz, and Witold Gombrowicz. A rare association copy thus. The greatest living literary critic and one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER HAROLD BLOOM AND CZESLAW MILOSZ TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0374156441.
