Mayday

Richard Marek Publishers New York: Richard Marek Publishers. (1979). First. First edition. Slightly cocked with accompanying waviness along the spine, a tiny abrasion on the front paste down and bumped corner, about near fine in about near fine dustwrapper with a touch of wear at the heel of the spine and wrinkling along the bottom front edge. Signed by the DeMille. The true first edition of this scarce title, a thriller co-written with Block, a pilot and DeMille's childhood friend. DeMille's co-authorship was originally unattributed, and the book club edition (lacking a priced jacket as this has) is sometimes mistakenly offered as a first edition. Very likely the most difficult DeMille book to obtain, particularly in this condition and signed. Although not marked in any way, this copy is from the distinguished modern first edition collection of Bruce Kahn. .

Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid

New York: Basic Books, 1979. First edition of the author's Pulitzer Prize-winning work. Signed by the author on the title page. Octavo, original brown cloth. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with the usual spine fade. Uncommon signed. Hofstadter's great achievement in Gödel, Escher, Bach was making abstruse mathematical topics (like undecidability, recursion, and 'strange loops') accessible and remarkably entertaining. Borrowing a page from Lewis Carroll (who might well have been a fan of this book), each chapter presents dialogue between the Tortoise and Achilles, as well as other characters who dramatize concepts discussed later in more detail. Allusions to Bach's music (centering on his Musical Offering) and Escher's continually paradoxical artwork are plentiful here. This more approachable material lets the author delve into serious number theory (concentrating on the ramifications of Gödel's Theorem of Incompleteness) while stopping along the way to ponder the work of a host of other mathematicians, artists, and thinkers.

        Plate 48

This superb watercolor of woodpeckers, measuring 20.75" x 29.25" framed, was executed by the noted natural history artist George Sandstrom, in preparation for the 1979 publication of Lester L. Short's Woodpeckers of the World. Sandstrom's watercolors represent a high point in modern natural history illustration, combining naturalistic compositions with meticulous attention to physical detail. Dean Amadon, commenting on these works in the foreword to the book, wrote: "The success of artist George Sandstrom's labors will be evident to anyone who leafs through the plates. They permit an efficient comparison of woodpeckers, particularly of closely related species, often grouped on the same or adjacent plates, from all quarters of the globe..." The woodpeckers he painted, numbering about 200 species and found on all the major land masses except Australia, are a prominent and conspicuous family of birds, both to the ornithologist and to the general public. Over the entire Northern Temperate region, woodpeckers, with a few exceptions, are among the very few small birds that are non-migratory. Their distinctive behavior and corresponding physical attributes have long captivated bird watchers and inspired artists, from Catesby to Audubon and beyond. Sandstrom's highly accomplished watercolors take their place in this sequence of artistic inspiration, and bear witness to a continuing fascination with these charming birds.

        James Bond and Moonraker

London: Jonathan Cape. 1979, 1979. FIRST EDITION, pp.221. Novelisation of the film 'Moonraker'. Publisher's cloth with pictorial dust-wrapper. Minor shelfwear, no inscriptions or price-clipping; a fine copy. This was written under licence from Ian Fleming's copyright holders Glidrose Publications- when Fleming sold the film rights to his novels he would not consent to this and 'The Spy Who Loved Me' being filmed as written; he felt 'The Spy Who Loved Me' was an experimental novel (with female perspective and narrative), and 'Moonraker' was somewhat dated; therefore both would need re-writing and Christopher Wood was brought in by director Lewis Gilbert to produce a screenplay and subsequent novel for the two titles Gilbert: Ian Fleming The Bibliography, pp.112, 612.

Signed poster for the 1979 Guggenheim retrospective

New York, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, , 1979. Offset lithograph exhibition poster, (830 × 560 mm) signed by Beuys in pencil. Framed and glazed. Image by Ute Klophaus from the 1968 action "Vacuum<->Mass" printed in dark blue. Excellent condition. Presented float mounted in ablack wooden frame with UV glass. First edition, one of 100 signed by Beuys at the vernissage of his only lifetime American retrospective. Claudia Schmuckli describes the Guggenheim exhibition as a "lightning rod for American criticism," opening the way for a number of radical assaults on Beuys's reputation, on his perceived messianism and his "infantile utopian rhetoric." Thirty years on, critical appreciation has shifted its ground from such literalism, and Beuys remains one of the most conceptually influential artists of the last century.

Lector in Fabula [Signed and Contemporarily Dated; a remarkably Intimate Association Copy] la cooperazione interpretativa nei testi narrativi [cooperation in the interpretative narrative texts]

Milano: Bompiani, 1979. First edition. Wrappers. Fine. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing -- properly stating "I edizione febbraio 1979" and with the Publisher's blindstamp to the title page, in the Publisher's original orange wrappers (light edge wear, minor spine creasing, modest mark to the leading edge of the closed page block -- not affecting the page margins or text), SIGNED BY UMBERTO ECO on the first page and there intimately and cryptically inscribed and contemporarily dated as follows: "A Lucrezia,/ sperando in tutto / quello che i / stato detto di / noi due (PW)/ Umberto/ Rio agosto 79" (a fabulous and intimate inscription which, translated to English, reads: "To Lucrezia, I am hoping for all those things that have been said of the two of us (PW) Umberto Rio August 79" -- by using the intimate plural "noi" Eco's inscription strongly implies that a relationship exists between Lucrezia and himself and and that even better things are to come). An important contribution to semiotics and discourse analysis in which Eco analyzes the theme of interpretation as textual work to be done by the reader. After an introduction that ties the search to the problem of the text, Eco presents his “reader model", that “a text wants someone to help him work” and that it is “a product whose interpretative fate is part of its generative mechanism.” There, the author provides a textual strategy, but it is distinct from the reader’s strategy. It is the meeting of these two strategies that forms a “textual cooperation.” Signed copies of the book are as scarce as hen's teeth. A Fine copy, SIGNED BY UMBERTO ECO AND QUITE INTIMATELY INSCRIBED. EXCEPTIONAL AND RARE.

        Mining My Antonia

Portland, OR: Triangular Press, 2012. Hard Cover. Fine. Hard Cover. Number 10 of 30 copies. Signed and numbered by the book artist. A fascinating and complex artist book from the highly regarded Barbara Tetenbaum. Barbara has created and printed books under the name Triangular Press since 1979. Her books can be found in public and private collections in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. In her book A Close Read: The Cather Projects, Barbara writes about how the book, along with two art installations, came about. She writes: "In the summer of 2010 I spent a month in the gallery at Reed College...listening to a recording of Willa Catherh's 1918 novel, My Antonia. I wanted to put myself in the position of a first-time reader and respond to the story however it moved me....I became amazed at the pure gorgeousness of Cather's writing - in particular her descriptions of the landscape and the sky. I surrendered myself to her words, retyping sentences and paragraphs onto many scraps of paper and pinning them to the walls...or suspending tem from fishing line for viewers to bump into. On the floor...I mapped out the novel using colored drafting and elecctrical tapes, assigning color or tape width to each character....the room was a kind of exploded view of the novel." The resulting book is a portfolio containing a soft, cloth-covered book held witing a hinged wooden frame. Housed behind the frame is a suite of five copperplate etchings made as automatic drawings in response to Cather's text. The book includes excerts from My Antonia and a large pullout print that maps the interior landscape of the novel. It is bound in patterned fabric and letterpress printed on Zerkall papers. In fine condition. Unpaginated. ARTISTSBOOKS/051413.
