TIME TO HEAL [Manuscript]

1979. FORD, Gerald R. TIME TO HEAL. (New York): Harper & Row, (1979). THE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT OF FORD'S MEMOIRS. 668 pages, with editorial/design marks in several hands. Also includes 12 pages of preliminary material-- including a two page publicity blurb. A few portions of the text have been cut and taped/stapled onto new pages. Much research reveals that none of this original manuscript appears to contain holographic markings of Gerald Ford. The substantive holographic changes are most likely in the hand of Trevor Armbrister. In Ford's Acknowledgements he states "Above all, A Time to Heal would never have come to fruition had it not been for the assistance of Trevor Armbrister ...". The material in the Gerald Ford Library relevant to researching this question is restricted from public access. This is none-the-less the original manuscript of the memoirs of a former American president and accordingly of historical significance and unique.

Industrial Design Deluxe Edition (Number 3/250 signed) + Signed Limited Raymond Loewy Portfolio "Automobiles" (1975)

New York: Overlook Hardcover. 1979. First printing. Hardcover. Fine. Number 3 of 250 signed copies, bound in vertically ribbed raspberry cloth in similarly bound slipcase, 250 pp., quarto, illustrated, including some in color including folding plate. Fine copy. ACCOMPANIED BY: Raymond Loewy Portfolio of 4 AUTOMOBILES, published in Fort Wayne, IN by the Bleifeld Group, c. 1975. Apparently limited to 1000 sets, this is number 13. Has 4 photo-offset prints on heavy paper in color, measuring 17 x 22 inches, each numbered 13 and three are initialed in ink by Loewy, the fourth signed in full. The four prints depict 4 Loewy designs of automobiles: a Thunderbird, an Avanti, a Studebaker and one other more futuristic design. Accompanied by tan cover sheet printed in brown telling about the Bleifeld Company and artist Van Dyan, who assisted Loewy in the production of these prints. Housed in thick tan folder with brown wax seal with RL embossed in the wax, and additionally housed in original cardboard mailing container. FINE. This portfolio was apparently limited to 1000 copies. The signatures by Loewy were done using some kind of oil pen that was prone to bleeding - there is a shadowy blur around each signature. Great prints by this major designer and the limited edition of the book is rare, rare, rare.

        A Model of Leptons

Physical Review Letters: American Physical Society. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. FIRST EDITION of Steven Weinberg's model of the electroweak force, one of the essential components of the standard model of particle physics. Weinberg shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics for his "contribution to the theory of the unified and weak electromagnetic interaction." "As Steven Weinberg tells the story, there was Isaac Newton's theory of gravity, 'intended to explain the movements of the celestial bodies and how such things as apples fall to the ground; and there was James Clerk Maxwell's account of electromagnetism as a way to explain light, radiation, magnetism, and the forces that operate between electrically charged particles.'" The quantum revolution "introduced two new forces, both operating at very short range, within the nucleus of the atom. The strong force holds the particles of the nucleus together and is very strong... The other is known as the weak force, which is responsible for radioactive decay. And so, until the 1960s there were four forces that needed to be reconciled: gravity, electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force, and the weak radioactive force" (Peter Watson, The Modern Mind). At Berkeley in 1967, "Weinberg produced a gauge theory that correctly predicted electromagnetic and weak nuclear forces. This was later to become known as the electroweak theory. In his paper, 'A model of leptons', he showed that although electromagnetism is much stronger than the weak force of everyday energies, the only way to devise a theory of the weak force is to include the electromagnetic force. Weinberg showed how what was seemingly impossible could be achieved and the forces could be unified through the interchange of particles in spite of the difference in their strengths. Abdus Salam had independently reached the same conclusions and what became known as the Weinberg-Salam model was a major advance on earlier models that had originally been applied to leptons... In 1979 Weinberg shared the Nobel Prize for Physics for this work with Salam and his old school friend Sheldon Glashow, who had extended the work that Weinberg and Salam had independently developed" (Chris Cooper, Physics). The discovery and description of the electroweak force has been confirmed experimentally and now is one of the essential elements of the "standard model" of particle physics. "By 1988, Weinberg's three-page paper in the Physical Review was the most frequently cited paper in elementary particle physics since the end of World War II" (Lightman, The Discoveries). Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries; Brian Greene, The Elegant Universe. In: Physical Review Letters, Vol. 19, 1967, pp. 1264-66. Quarto, modern wrappers (without original wrappers); custom box. Fine condition.

Franklin Center, PA: Franklin Mint, 1979. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Franklin Center, PA: Franklin Mint, 1979. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 194 pages. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the most sensational American literary debuts of the 20th century. Limited Edition, as stated. There is no ISBN. The book is now rare. A dazzling production by Franklin Mint: Regular-sized volume format. Handsome brown leather boards with gilt design embossed on the cover and gilt titles embossed on the spine, as issued. Text by Truman Capote. Art by Bob Dacey. Capote has written a lovely and nostalgic Introduction which appears in this edition only. Gilt paper edges. Stunning silk cloth endpapers. Bound-in satin ribbon marker. Printed on acid-free archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Re-presents "Other Voices, Other Rooms" in a handsome collectible production format. Capote was twenty-four years old when the book was first published in 1948. From the beginning, Capote aspired to and achieved a clean, immaculate style, what he once called the "authentic American voice", which only John Updike and Joan Didion have matched since. The purity of his prose helped define the post-Hemingway and Faulkner American literary style, remains refreshingly contemporary, and is an effective "antibiotic" against far too many toxic "post-modern" writers who cannot write a single decent sentence in the English language. As a writer, Capote had an equal number of admirers and detractors. But to have someone like Cynthia Ozick wax rhapsodic over the first time she read "Other Voices, Other Rooms" is worth more than a thousand words from any other writer. Another great fellow writer considers him F. Scott Fitzgerald's successor: "The scene stirring with rightness and strangeness, the compressed phrase, the exact yet imaginative word, the devastating metaphorical aptness, a feeling of concentrated excess which at the same time gives the effect of being crystalline" (James Dickey) . A "must-have" edition for Truman Capote collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Edition, indicated as such on the Front Limited-Edition Statement Page, and is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue ink-pen by Truman Capote. This edition is now highly collectible. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. Copies of the 1948 First Edition command about $4000 online. Copies of this edition command as much as $1000. A rare signed copy thus. Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" is widely regarded as one of the greatest books of the 20th century. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER TRUMAN CAPOTE TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

        The Right Stuff [Signed]

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1979. First edition / First printing.. Hardcover.. A fine copy in a very near fine dust jacket.. Octavo. The author's eighth book and basis for the 1983 Academy Award-winning film, directed by Philip Kaufman and starring Sam Shepard, Scott Glenn, Ed Harris, Dennis Quaid, Fred Ward, Barbara Hershey and Veronica Cartwright. ~An extraordinary association copy elaborately SIGNED and INSCRIBED on the front flyleaf in brown ink by the author to personal friend, the artist Richard Merkin, "For Richard, Veteran of the Air Force and Miss Black Burn Campaigns, who forgives (Pace Frazier) clip-on dollar-pins and immortalizes sinners nonetheless, From Tom Wolfe - December 1, 1979." ~An apparently unread copy, bright and clean, with a very tight tight binding in a very near fine dust jacket, which would be considered fine but for the slightest light crease to the spine panel at it's head, and an associated light crease toward the upper left edge of the front panel. An exceptionally unique copy, beautifully inscribed in the year of publication by the author and highly collectible. From the Richard Merkin Collection.

Richard Marek Publishers New York: Richard Marek Publishers. (1979). First. First edition. Slightly cocked with accompanying waviness along the spine, a tiny abrasion on the front paste down and bumped corner, about near fine in about near fine dustwrapper with a touch of wear at the heel of the spine and wrinkling along the bottom front edge. Signed by the DeMille. The true first edition of this scarce title, a thriller co-written with Block, a pilot and DeMille's childhood friend. DeMille's co-authorship was originally unattributed, and the book club edition (lacking a priced jacket as this has) is sometimes mistakenly offered as a first edition. Very likely the most difficult DeMille book to obtain, particularly in this condition and signed. Although not marked in any way, this copy is from the distinguished modern first edition collection of Bruce Kahn. .

Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid

New York: Basic Books, 1979. First edition of the author's Pulitzer Prize-winning work. Signed by the author on the title page. Octavo, original brown cloth. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with the usual spine fade. Uncommon signed. Hofstadter's great achievement in Gödel, Escher, Bach was making abstruse mathematical topics (like undecidability, recursion, and 'strange loops') accessible and remarkably entertaining. Borrowing a page from Lewis Carroll (who might well have been a fan of this book), each chapter presents dialogue between the Tortoise and Achilles, as well as other characters who dramatize concepts discussed later in more detail. Allusions to Bach's music (centering on his Musical Offering) and Escher's continually paradoxical artwork are plentiful here. This more approachable material lets the author delve into serious number theory (concentrating on the ramifications of Gödel's Theorem of Incompleteness) while stopping along the way to ponder the work of a host of other mathematicians, artists, and thinkers.
