Lives of the Most Eminent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects

New York - Harry N. Abrams, 1979 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. An attractive collection of biographies of eminent artists, translated from the original 1550 Italian by Giorgio Vasari. First edition thus. Translated by Gaston du C. de Vere, with an introduction by Kenneth Clark. The work has a consistent and notorious bias in favour of Florentines and tends to attribute to them all the developments in Renaissance art for example, the invention of engraving. Venetian art in particular (along with arts from other parts of Europe), is systematically ignored in the first edition. Between the first and second editions, Vasari visited Venice and while the second edition gave more attention to Venetian art (finally including Titian) it did so without achieving a neutral point of view. Vasari's biographies are interspersed with amusing gossip. Many of his anecdotes have the ring of truth, while others are inventions or generic fictions, such as the tale of young Giotto painting a fly on the surface of a painting by Cimabue that the older master repeatedly tried to brush away, a genre tale that echoes anecdotes told of the Greek painter Apelles. With a few exceptions, however, Vasari's aesthetic judgement was acute and unbiased. Lavishly illustrated with many colour and monochrome vignettes. Complete in three volumes. Condition: In half-morocco bindings with gilt tooling to the spines and front boards. Externally smart, with just a few marks. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Overall: FINE..

The Journal of Lewis and Clark Expedition

13 volumes including the Atlas volume of maps, Herbarium volume of plats and index. Small quarto (10 1/4" x 7") for all the volumes except volume 12 Herbarium Large Quarto (12 1/4" x 9 1/4") and the Atlas Folio (19 3/4" x 13 3/4"). Mixed printings. In 1979 a project to publish a completely re-edited version of the journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition was started at the University of Nebraska. This new version was co-sponsored by the Center for Great Plains Studies and by the American Philosophical Society, and the Editor was Dr. Gary Moulton. For the next 20 years Dr. Moulton would be knee deep in journal entries, maps and scientific notes. The new addition would number 13 regular volumes, including an atlas of maps and Herbarium, the journals of Lewis, Clark, John Ordway, Charles Floyd, Patrick Gass, and Joseph Whitehouse, a volume of the expedition’s botanical specimens, plus a comprehensive index. Dr. Moulton had to decipher the hand written text of these journals from micro film or the original texts to get the most accurate reading possible. This could be a real challenge with poor penmanship, improper spelling and the age of the entries. (Captain Clark spelled the Indian tribe Sioux 27 different ways ). It was Dr. Moulton’s dedication to this project that produced most comprehensive works of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in print today.Condition:A near fine set in like jacket. Atlas volume issued without jacket.

        TIME TO HEAL [Manuscript]

1979 - FORD, Gerald R. TIME TO HEAL. (New York): Harper & Row, (1979). THE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT OF FORD'S MEMOIRS. 668 pages, with editorial/design marks in several hands. Also includes 12 pages of preliminary material-- including a two page publicity blurb. A few portions of the text have been cut and taped/stapled onto new pages. Much research reveals that none of this original manuscript appears to contain holographic markings of Gerald Ford. The substantive holographic changes are most likely in the hand of Trevor Armbrister. In Ford's Acknowledgements he states "Above all, A Time to Heal would never have come to fruition had it not been for the assistance of Trevor Armbrister .". The material in the Gerald Ford Library relevant to researching this question is restricted from public access. This is none-the-less the original manuscript of the memoirs of a former American president and accordingly of historical significance and unique.

        A Model of Leptons

Physical Review Letters: American Physical Society. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. FIRST EDITION of Steven Weinberg's model of the electroweak force, one of the essential components of the standard model of particle physics. Weinberg shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics for his "contribution to the theory of the unified and weak electromagnetic interaction." "As Steven Weinberg tells the story, there was Isaac Newton's theory of gravity, 'intended to explain the movements of the celestial bodies and how such things as apples fall to the ground; and there was James Clerk Maxwell's account of electromagnetism as a way to explain light, radiation, magnetism, and the forces that operate between electrically charged particles.'" The quantum revolution "introduced two new forces, both operating at very short range, within the nucleus of the atom. The strong force holds the particles of the nucleus together and is very strong... The other is known as the weak force, which is responsible for radioactive decay. And so, until the 1960s there were four forces that needed to be reconciled: gravity, electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force, and the weak radioactive force" (Peter Watson, The Modern Mind). At Berkeley in 1967, "Weinberg produced a gauge theory that correctly predicted electromagnetic and weak nuclear forces. This was later to become known as the electroweak theory. In his paper, 'A model of leptons', he showed that although electromagnetism is much stronger than the weak force of everyday energies, the only way to devise a theory of the weak force is to include the electromagnetic force. Weinberg showed how what was seemingly impossible could be achieved and the forces could be unified through the interchange of particles in spite of the difference in their strengths. Abdus Salam had independently reached the same conclusions and what became known as the Weinberg-Salam model was a major advance on earlier models that had originally been applied to leptons... In 1979 Weinberg shared the Nobel Prize for Physics for this work with Salam and his old school friend Sheldon Glashow, who had extended the work that Weinberg and Salam had independently developed" (Chris Cooper, Physics). The discovery and description of the electroweak force has been confirmed experimentally and now is one of the essential elements of the "standard model" of particle physics. "By 1988, Weinberg's three-page paper in the Physical Review was the most frequently cited paper in elementary particle physics since the end of World War II" (Lightman, The Discoveries). Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries; Brian Greene, The Elegant Universe. In: Physical Review Letters, Vol. 19, 1967, pp. 1264-66. Quarto, modern wrappers (without original wrappers); custom box. Fine condition.

Franklin Center, PA: Franklin Mint, 1979. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Franklin Center, PA: Franklin Mint, 1979. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 194 pages. The author&#39;s breakthrough debut novel. One of the most sensational American literary debuts of the 20th century. Limited Edition, as stated. There is no ISBN. The book is now rare. A dazzling production by Franklin Mint: Regular-sized volume format. Handsome brown leather boards with gilt design embossed on the cover and gilt titles embossed on the spine, as issued. Text by Truman Capote. Art by Bob Dacey. Capote has written a lovely and nostalgic Introduction which appears in this edition only. Gilt paper edges. Stunning silk cloth endpapers. Bound-in satin ribbon marker. Printed on acid-free archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Re-presents "Other Voices, Other Rooms" in a handsome collectible production format. Capote was twenty-four years old when the book was first published in 1948. From the beginning, Capote aspired to and achieved a clean, immaculate style, what he once called the "authentic American voice", which only John Updike and Joan Didion have matched since. The purity of his prose helped define the post-Hemingway and Faulkner American literary style, remains refreshingly contemporary, and is an effective "antibiotic" against far too many toxic "post-modern" writers who cannot write a single decent sentence in the English language. As a writer, Capote had an equal number of admirers and detractors. But to have someone like Cynthia Ozick wax rhapsodic over the first time she read "Other Voices, Other Rooms" is worth more than a thousand words from any other writer. Another great fellow writer considers him F. Scott Fitzgerald&#39;s successor: "The scene stirring with rightness and strangeness, the compressed phrase, the exact yet imaginative word, the devastating metaphorical aptness, a feeling of concentrated excess which at the same time gives the effect of being crystalline" (James Dickey) . A "must-have" edition for Truman Capote collectors. <b><i> This copy is one of the Limited Edition, indicated as such on the Front Limited-Edition Statement Page, and is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue ink-pen by Truman Capote. This edition is now highly collectible. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. Copies of the 1948 First Edition command about $4000 online. Copies of this edition command as much as $1000. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> Truman Capote&#39;s "In Cold Blood" is widely regarded as one of the greatest books of the 20th century. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER TRUMAN CAPOTE TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).
