Hand Cast and Photos (from The Bandaged Poets Series)

1979. Plaster cast of William S. Burroughs's right hand created by Caroline Gosselin as part of her Bandaged Poets Series with several accompanying photographs taken by Gerard Malanga of the casting process, Burroughs holding the finished hand, and of Gregory Corso. The unsigned hand is 5" x 2.75" x 7" with a rectangular base and is assembled from two separate molds of the front and back of Burroughs's hand which were then affixed together. Fine with a touch of toning from being handled. Accompanied by four original photographic prints of Burroughs holding the hand, each a different size: 13.75" x 11", 9.75" x 8", 7" x 5.5", and 7" x 5". All are fine except one which has been cut down from a larger photo and has a somewhat ragged top and foredge, near fine. Also included is a long, narrow photo strip measuring 63" x 3.5" with 36 separate images: twenty-four of Burroughs's hand being cast; four of Burroughs holding the hand (but different from the larger images); and eight of Gregory Corso, presumably present when the cast was made, sitting by a window. The strip is Signed on the verso: "Gerard Malanga '79" with "739" stamped nearby, though there is some reason to believe the photographs, (or at least a few) were taken by Ira Cohen who helped conceive of the series and married Gosselin in 1981. Supposedly only two copies of the cast were made; the other is reportedly at the Beinecke Library at Yale. .

THE ROMANCE OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE. Inscribed by the King of Horror to the Father of Horror Films

(New York): Macmillan and Co., Limited, (1979). First Thus. Hardcover. Fine in a Fine dustwrapper. Arthur Rackham. Abridged by Alfred W. Pollard and illustrated in color and black-and-white by Arthur Rackham. INSCRIBED on the title page by Stephen King to filmmaker George Romero: George--/I want to congratulate you again on a/stunning and beautiful piece of filmmaking./Here's something that I thought might, in view/of the Knightriders subject-matter, ring a bell--/Steve King/2-6-81." The allusion by King is to the 1981 Romero film KNIGHTRIDERS, based on Arthurian legend about a group of modern-day jousters who reenact tournaments on motorcycles. King and his wife Tabitha had a 20-second cameo in the film. The following year the Romero film CREEPSHOW, written by King, came out. Romero would later make one of the better film adaptions of a King book, THE DARK HALF. George Romero was inspired to make horror films after making a segment for Mister Rogers' Neighborhood in which Mr. Rogers underwent a tonsillectomy. His first film, Night of the Living Dead (1968), sparked interest in zombies, currently in full blossom.

        Suttree

Random House, New York, New York, U.S.A. 1979 - Beautiful copy of this novel by Cormac McCarthy. It is a first edition, first printing of his first book, although others were published before it. Book is in excellent condition, but hinge is beginning to come loose and there are some small stains (coffee?) on the fore-edge. Binding is otherwise tight and pages are clean and bright. Previous owner, Dallas Wiebe, a Cincinnati poet and novelist, has written his name in the first paste-down end-paper. Suttree is the fourth of McCarthy's novels to be published, but was started well before his first novel, The Orchard Keeper, which appeared in 1965. Suttree is the story of Cornelius Suttree, a Knoxville, TN fisherman who is estranged from his prominent family and lives in a dilapidated houseboat on the river. Withdrawn from the society his well-to-do family represents, he chooses instead to live in a world inhabited by people who live precarious, desperate, and often violent lives. Cormac McCarthy was born in Rhode Island. He later went to Chicago, where he worked as an auto mechanic while writing his first novel, The Orchard Keeper. The Orchard Keeper was published by Random House in 1965; McCarthy's editor there was Albert Erskine, William Faulkner's long-time editor. Before publication, McCarthy received a traveling fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, which he used to travel to Ireland. In 1966 he also received the Rockefeller Foundation Grant, with which he continued to tour Europe, settling on the island of Ibiza. Here, McCarthy completed revisions of his next novel, Outer Dark. In 1967, McCarthy returned to the United States, moving to Tennessee. Outer Dark was published by Random House in 1968, and McCarthy received the Guggenheim Fellowship for Creative Writing in 1969. His next novel, Child of God, was published in 1973. From 1974 to 1975, McCarthy worked on the screenplay for a PBS film called The Gardener's Son, which premiered in 1977. A revised version of the screenplay was later published by Ecco Press. In the late 1970s, McCarthy moved to Texas, and in 1979 published his fourth novel, Suttree, a book that had occupied his writing life on and off for twenty years. He received a MacArthur Fellowship in 1981, and published his fifth novel, Blood Meridian, in 1985. All the Pretty Horses, the first volume of The Border Trilogy, was published by Knopf in 1992. It won both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award and was later turned into a feature film. The Stonemason, a play that McCarthy had written in the mid-1970s and subsequently revised, was published by Ecco Press in 1994. Soon thereafter, Knopf released the second volume of The Border Trilogy, The Crossing; the third volume, Cities of the Plain, was published in 1998.McCarthy's next novel, No Country for Old Men was published in 2005. This was followed in 2006 by a novel in dramatic form, The Sunset Limited, originally performed by Steppenwolf Theatre Company of Chicago and published in paperback by Vintage Books. McCarthy's most recent novel, The Road, was published in 2006 and won the Pulitzer Prize. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Antonio's View of the 1979 Coty American Fashion Critics Award Winners and Nominees

Coty, NP 1979 - 408/500. Elephant Portfolio, 15 1/2 x 11 1/2" - (2) 14pp., 14 plates. Original light brown portfolio with gilt lettering on cover with lithographs laid in. Extraordinary portfolio of one of the fashion industry's leading illustrators of the 1960s. Working for Harper's Bazaar, British Vogue, and Elle Antonio introduced ethnic models to the haute couture and became known for his irreverent pop art illustrations destroying the notion that fashion art had to be serious and rose to become an acknowledged harbinger of new trends. The 14 plates of lithographs included here, accompanied by 14 brief bios of fashion designers printed on mottled ochre vellum paper, are described by Antonio as follows: "In each of these plates I tried to reflect the mood and spirit of both the designer and the clothes, relating each drawing to its own historical art period." Among the fashion designers addressed here Perry Ellis, Ralph Lauren, Alexander Julian, Jhane Barnes, and others. Portfolio lightly rubbed and scuffed with small stain on cover. One of the bio pages is missing and Mary McFadden's bio in duplicate. Portfolio in overall good, interior in very good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Factory Records Newsletter and Shareholder's Analysis [with] Joy Division "Bandthe, Bandthe, Bandthe..." [Promotional sheet]

Manchester: Factory Records. September 1979. Original photocopied newsletter with promotional sheet. [2]pp + [2]pp. Two sets of loose sheets printed versos only attached with one staple. Near fine with some light wear at a staple and some corners, particularly the final sheet. A rare example of two seminal documents from Factory Records. The first, a "polemical newsletter written by Tony Wilson in September 1979, detailing Factory's activities to date, and future plans" (Peter Saville Estate 1-127 #10), is in essence a press release/bibliography describing in an often-sarcastic tone everything Factory Records had released up until that point, including items of dubious legitimacy ("Factory egg timer; menstrual art..."). Together with the newsletter is the first Joy Division promotional sheet, written by Ian Curtis, typed and signed Steve Morris which was sent out with the "Ideal For Living" EP in 1978. Rare. .

Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume V, Part 1, The Exchequer Years 1922 - 1929

London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1979. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - sixteen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. The Companion volumes for Volume V of the Official Biography are the most keenly sought and most prohibitive to acquire of all Official Biography volumes. There was only a single printing in England and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes - meaning that many Official Biography sets will forever do without. Here is a truly fine copy of the first of the three Volume V Companions, the British first edition, only printing. The white dust jacket is immaculate with absolutely no flaws to report - crisp, bright, clean, and complete with no discernible wear. There were two prices on the dust jacket flap - an original introductory price and then a higher price specified after 1 February 1981. Both prices are intact on this unclipped dust jacket. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. The book beneath is likewise truly fine and appears unread. The red cloth binding is clean, tight, and square, showing virtually no wear and retaining a nicely rounded spine, sharp corners, and bright spine gilt. The contents are pristine. There is no sign of the looseness or gutter breaks that so often occur with this massive volume. There is no spotting and no previous ownership marks. The fore and bottom edges are as clean and bright as the contents. The sole trivial flaw noted is that the first half inch of topstain immediately adjacent to the spine is very slightly sunned. The balance of the red topstain retains deep unfaded color. Please note that this large, heavy book may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302e1.

        Suttree

Random House, 1979-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Acceptable. Association Copy. New York: Random House, 1979. First Edition, First Printing, with "First Edition" stated on the copyright page, as well as the proper printing code of "24689753" to denote a first printing. In the original dust jacket with the price of $12.95 intact. In Fair condition, in a Good Minus dust jacket. The boards show soiling, with heavy wear at the corners. Spine cloth heavily worn. Front hinge starting. Pages are in fair condition as well, with water warping, light pencil marking. The dust jacket shows edge wear, surface wear and creasing. It seems the book was lent out by a woman named Kit, who had each reader write an inscription. The front free end paper and the following page have a total of four gift inscriptions to a Kit and Barb, and the inscriptions suggest the people who wrote them knew Cormac McCarthy personally, or found themselves written into the book itself. A truly one-of-a-kind copy, offering an interesting glimpse into the background of the novel. The inscriptions, as far as can be deciphered, are as follows: 6/15/82A wonderful view of Knoxville's netherside. A fantastic(?) collection of stamps and beautiful description of life.Bob Kronick(Most likely Robert Kronick, currently a professor of University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where Suttree is set; he earned his PhD there in 1971)Kit-Memories came Rushing back...of places and more than a few people, too. Charlie (Cormac) and I saw some of his images together. Now I wonder if it was as hard as Charlie saw...or as soft and clouded as I remember.         JACOB BIGELOW'S AMERICAN MEDICAL BOTANY, 1817-1821, AN EXAMINATION OF THE ORIGIN, PRINTING, BINDING AND DISTRIBUTION OF AMERICA'S FIRST COLOR PLATE BOOK. WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON THE MANNER OF MAKING AND PRINTING ITS COLORED PLATES

North Hills, PA: Bird & Bull Press, 1979. quarter leather over decorated paper-covered boards. 33382|61557|89153|100363/PR. Bird & Bull Press. tall 8vo. quarter leather over decorated paper-covered boards. 123 pages. Limited to 300 numbered copies, this work (Taylor A21) is an excellent, scholarly study, finely printed by Henry Morris. With two original plates intended for Bigelow's book, Jacob Bigelow's American Medical Botany shows a plate that Bigelow had meant to use in his work but didn't. "The two illustrations mounted into this study comprise original, engraved plates--one hand-colored and one left uncolored--which Jacob Bigelow had made up when he initially intended to illustrate his edition in the usual, hand-colored way. As this study shows, the burdensome aspects of this method led him and his cohorts to invent a mechanical method of printing the plates and coloring them concurrently. This resulted in the abandonment of these initial plates, some of which had been colored by artists and some left untouched. These surplus plates, amounting to several thousand, came into the Boston Medical Library in 1927 through the bequest of Jacob Bigelow's grandson, Dr. William Sturgis Bigelow, and it was deemed desirable to mount two of them--a colored and an uncolored specimen--into each copy of this edition, in this way enhancing it with an air of originality and added interest.
