Factory Records Newsletter and Shareholder's Analysis [with] Joy Division "Bandthe, Bandthe, Bandthe..." [Promotional sheet]

Manchester: Factory Records. September 1979. Original photocopied newsletter with promotional sheet. [2]pp + [2]pp. Two sets of loose sheets printed versos only attached with one staple. Near fine with some light wear at a staple and some corners, particularly the final sheet. A rare example of two seminal documents from Factory Records. The first, a "polemical newsletter written by Tony Wilson in September 1979, detailing Factory's activities to date, and future plans" (Peter Saville Estate 1-127 #10), is in essence a press release/bibliography describing in an often-sarcastic tone everything Factory Records had released up until that point, including items of dubious legitimacy ("Factory egg timer; menstrual art..."). Together with the newsletter is the first Joy Division promotional sheet, written by Ian Curtis, typed and signed Steve Morris which was sent out with the "Ideal For Living" EP in 1978. Rare. .

Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume V, Part 1, The Exchequer Years 1922 - 1929

London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1979. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - sixteen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. The Companion volumes for Volume V of the Official Biography are the most keenly sought and most prohibitive to acquire of all Official Biography volumes. There was only a single printing in England and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes - meaning that many Official Biography sets will forever do without. Here is a truly fine copy of the first of the three Volume V Companions, the British first edition, only printing. The white dust jacket is immaculate with absolutely no flaws to report - crisp, bright, clean, and complete with no discernible wear. There were two prices on the dust jacket flap - an original introductory price and then a higher price specified after 1 February 1981. Both prices are intact on this unclipped dust jacket. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. The book beneath is likewise truly fine and appears unread. The red cloth binding is clean, tight, and square, showing virtually no wear and retaining a nicely rounded spine, sharp corners, and bright spine gilt. The contents are pristine. There is no sign of the looseness or gutter breaks that so often occur with this massive volume. There is no spotting and no previous ownership marks. The fore and bottom edges are as clean and bright as the contents. The sole trivial flaw noted is that the first half inch of topstain immediately adjacent to the spine is very slightly sunned. The balance of the red topstain retains deep unfaded color. Please note that this large, heavy book may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302e1.

First Edition, First Printing, with "First Edition" stated on the copyright page, as well as the proper printing code of "24689753" to denote a first printing. In the original dust jacket with the price of $12.95 intact. In Fair condition, in a Good Minus dust jacket. The boards show soiling, with heavy wear at the corners. Spine cloth heavily worn. Front hinge starting. Pages are in fair condition as well, with water warping, light pencil marking. The dust jacket shows edge wear, surface wear and creasing. It seems the book was lent out by a woman named Kit, who had each reader write an inscription. The front free end paper and the following page have a total of four gift inscriptions to a Kit and Barb, and the inscriptions suggest the people who wrote them knew Cormac McCarthy personally, or found themselves written into the book itself. A truly one-of-a-kind copy, offering an interesting glimpse into the background of the novel. Bird & Bull Press. tall 8vo. quarter leather over decorated paper-covered boards. 123 pages. Limited to 300 numbered copies, this work (Taylor A21) is an excellent, scholarly study, finely printed by Henry Morris. With two original plates intended for Bigelow's book, Jacob Bigelow's American Medical Botany shows a plate that Bigelow had meant to use in his work but didn't. "The two illustrations mounted into this study comprise original, engraved plates--one hand-colored and one left uncolored--which Jacob Bigelow had made up when he initially intended to illustrate his edition in the usual, hand-colored way. As this study shows, the burdensome aspects of this method led him and his cohorts to invent a mechanical method of printing the plates and coloring them concurrently. This resulted in the abandonment of these initial plates, some of which had been colored by artists and some left untouched. These surplus plates, amounting to several thousand, came into the Boston Medical Library in 1927 through the bequest of Jacob Bigelow's grandson, Dr. William Sturgis Bigelow, and it was deemed desirable to mount two of them--a colored and an uncolored specimen--into each copy of this edition, in this way enhancing it with an air of originality and added interest.

        The Right Stuff

New York: Farrar, Straus, Giroux, 1979. First edition. Octavo, original cloth with titles to the spine in silver. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Signed by Tom Wolfe and additionally signed by pilot Chuck Yeager and by John Glenn, one of the Mercury Seven. A very sharp copy, rare signed by Wolfe, Yeager and Glenn. Tom Wolfe began The Right Stuff at a time when it was unfashionable to contemplate American heroism. Nixon had left the White House in disgrace, the nation was reeling from the catastrophe of Vietnam, and in 1979--the year the book appeared--Americans were being held hostage by Iranian militants. Yet it was exactly the anachronistic courage of his subjects that captivated Wolfe. In his foreword, he notes that as late as 1970, almost one in four career Navy pilots died in accidents. "The Right Stuff," he explains, "became a story of why men were willing--willing?--delighted!--to take on such odds in this, an era literary people had long since characterized as the age of the anti-hero." "One of the most romantic and thrilling books ever written about men who put themselves in peril." (The Boston Globe). Listed by Modern Library as one of the top 100 nonfiction works of the twentieth century.

La Condition Postmoderne. Rapport sur le savoir.

(Paris), Minuet, (1979). 8vo. Original wrappers. Very minor soiling/sunning to wrappers and light underlinings to the first two pages. Otherwise a very nice, clean, and fresh copy. 109, (3) pp. + The Minuet advertisement leaf, dated September 1979, for the work laid in loose. Author's presentation inscription for Roger Parmentier to half-title, signed "J-F Ly.".. First edition, presentation-copy for the famous theologian Roger Parmentier, of the groundbreaking work that introduced the term "post-modernism" and fundamentally altered the interpretation and course of (post-)modern philosophy. With this book, Lyotard set the agenda for the discussion of the postmodern, which began in the 1980'ies. Lyotard's main point is that modern society has become postmodern because man no longer believes that scientific and technological progress will lead to freedom, prosperity, and enlightenment for all. For postmodern man, doubt is the dominating factor. The term "postmodernism" was previously only used by art critics, but with "The Postmodern Condition", Lyotard introduced it in philosophy, with the following quotation: "Simplifying to the extreme, I define postmodern as incredulity towards metanarratives", altering our comprehension of this most recent period of philosophy. The influential French theologian and priest Roger Parmentier (1914-2008) was born in the region of Paris. Later he moved with his family to Constantine in Algeria where he became interested in Judaism. In 1941 he moved to Paris wher he studied theology at the Protestant faculty. He founded a group that famously fought against Nazism and antisemistism. After the liberation he took part in the creation of Meetings between Jews and Christians, paving the way for the Jewesh-Christian Friendship ("l'Amitié Judéo-Chrétienne"). He continued his religious-political path throughout his life, is known as an important 20th century-intellectual, and is famous for his many theological writings. "The term "postmodern" came into the philosophical lexicon with the publication of Jean-François Lyotard's "La Condition Postmoderne" in 1979 (English: "The Postmodern Condition: A Report on Knowledge", 1984), where he employs Wittgenstein's model of language games (see Wittgenstein 1953) and concepts taken from speech act theory to account for what he calls a transformation of the game rules for science, art, and literature since the end of the nineteenth century. He describes his text as a combination of two very different language games, that of the philosopher and that of the expert. Where the expert knows what he knows and what he doesn't know, the philosopher knows neither, but poses questions. In light of this ambiguity, Lyotard states that his portrayal of the state of knowledge "makes no claims to being original or even true," and that his hypotheses "should not be accorded predictive value in relation to reality, but strategic value in relation to the questions raised" (Lyotard 1984, 7). The book, then, is as much an experiment in the combination of language games as it is an objective "report."On Lyotard's account, the computer age has transformed knowledge into information, that is, coded messages within a system of transmission and communication. Analysis of this knowledge calls for a pragmatics of communication insofar as the phrasing of messages, their transmission and reception, must follow rules in order to be accepted by those who judge them. However, as Lyotard points out, the position of judge or legislator is also a position within a language game, and this raises the question of legitimation. As he insists, "there is a strict interlinkage between the kind of language called science and the kind called ethics and politics" (Lyotard 1984, 8), and this interlinkage constitutes the cultural perspective of the West. Science is therefore tightly interwoven with government and administration, especially in the information age, where enormous amounts of capital and large installations are needed for research."
