Hand Cast and Photos (from The Bandaged Poets Series)

1979. Plaster cast of William S. Burroughs's right hand created by Caroline Gosselin as part of her Bandaged Poets Series with several accompanying photographs taken by Gerard Malanga of the casting process, Burroughs holding the finished hand, and of Gregory Corso. The unsigned hand is 5" x 2.75" x 7" with a rectangular base and is assembled from two separate molds of the front and back of Burroughs's hand which were then affixed together. Fine with a touch of toning from being handled. Accompanied by four original photographic prints of Burroughs holding the hand, each a different size: 13.75" x 11", 9.75" x 8", 7" x 5.5", and 7" x 5". All are fine except one which has been cut down from a larger photo and has a somewhat ragged top and foredge, near fine. Also included is a long, narrow photo strip measuring 63" x 3.5" with 36 separate images: twenty-four of Burroughs's hand being cast; four of Burroughs holding the hand (but different from the larger images); and eight of Gregory Corso, presumably present when the cast was made, sitting by a window. The strip is Signed on the verso: "Gerard Malanga '79" with "739" stamped nearby, though there is some reason to believe the photographs, (or at least a few) were taken by Ira Cohen who helped conceive of the series and married Gosselin in 1981. Supposedly only two copies of the cast were made; the other is reportedly at the Beinecke Library at Yale. .

Aperture Foundation, Inc., New York 1979 - First edition, first printing. Limited edition of 300 slipcased copies signed in black ink on the first page by Model (this copy is not numbered). [This edition does not include the silver print, which was originally included with the edition.] Hardcover. Gray cloth with title debossed in black on spine, in gray cloth slipcase printed on the front with a facsimile of Model's autograph in dark gray. Photographs by Lisette Model. Preface by Berenice Abbott. Includes chronology, bibliography and exhibition history. Designed by Marvin Israel. 112 pp., with approximately 60 large black and white plates, including several two-page spreads. 15 3/4 x 12 1/2 inches. Out-of-print. Very scarce. CONDITION: Near Fine (rippled cloth on slipcase, else Fine in the publisher's original printed cardboard shipping box). [Cited in Andrew Roth, ed., The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century. (New York: PPP Editions in association with Roth Horowitz LLC, 2001).] The landmark publication of Model's work, from the 1930s to the 1970s, features her best-known, incisive images of humanity, from tourists on the Cote d'Azur and high-society New Yorkers, to entertainers, to outcasts, and more. From the preface by Berenice Abbott: "I know of no photographer who has photographed people as inwardly as Lisette Model. Her people are direct targets of an artist's vision. She has that necessary rapport with the human species of whatever hue or faction. She is very much at home with all kinds of people. She feels for them and understands them. Sensitivity and tenderness predominate so that the camera finger is on their very pulse. She is concerned about them, and allows them to speak for themselves. It is a large order to look at life unblinkingly in the midst of general confusion. I believe Lisette Model's seeing places her in the foreground of an elite group. She is part of no cult nor fad. She is always herself. Hers is the fearless eye. Lisette has said, 'Don't shoot 'till the subject hits you in the pit of your stomach.' She does not shrink from reality. She meets it head on. Concerned with art, the subject is lost. Concerned with the subject, art is found. This is Lisette Model." Signed by Author [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Don Segundo Sombra.

Buenos Aires, ‘Sociedad de Bibliófilos Argentinos’, 1979. - Don Segundo Sombra. Buenos Aires, Sociedad de Bibliofilos Argentinos, 1979. Large folio. 197 + [1 blank]p + [4 + 1 blank]f. Title with name and device of the Argentine Bibliophile Society in green. With 9 etchings drawn and engraved by Aída Carballo. Grey publisher’s wrappers, title blind-embossed on front cover, name and device of the Argentine Bibliophile Society in green; publisher’s box with label. Number 77 of a limited edition of 100 copies on Auvergne crème paper (printed for Héctor P. Lanfranco) finely printed for the Society of Argentine Bibliophiles in celebration of the 50th anniversary of its founding on 20 August 1928. The text of Don Segundo Sombra is based on Güiraldes’ personal copy of the first edition of his work (published in 1926) which contained corrections in his own hand. Ricardo Güiraldes (1886-1927) had spent much time in Paris, where he was attracted to the avant-garde, leading him later to collaborate on innovative journals of the twenties including Proa and Martín Fierro. The present work is his masterpiece, and considered the classic Argentine novel; it celebrates rural life and gaucho simplicity in a boy’s growth to maturity under the tutelage of a wise cowhand Don Segundo Sombra, portrayed as a personification of the pampa. The beautifully executed etchings include a round frontispiece portrait, a man fishing, a pair of lovers, and gauchos in the Argentine pampa (each about 215 x 155mm). A very fine copy.         Jessica Lange (color portrait from the front cover of INTERVIEW, with hand-drawn additions, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY ANDY WARHOL)

Interview, New York 1979 - This is the front cover of volume IX, number 4 (April, 1979) of INTERVIEW, Andy Warhol's fabled tabloid. On this cover is a brightly-colored portrait of a young and attractive Jessica Lange, executed in purest "Interview" style. Warhol has added a fanciful necklace in felt-tip pen. Inscribed "To Lillyan" (sic) and FULLY SIGNED (again, in felt-tipped pen) BY ANDY WARHOL. 43 x 28 cm (17 x 11 inches), and thus COMPLETELY UNTRIMMED. Professionally deacidified and matted. In excellent condition. Provenance: "Lillyan" was Lilyan Cole, the second wife of Sylvan Cole (dean of American print dealers and a well-known fixture of the New York arts scene from the 1940s until his death in 2005.) When Lilyan died in 1989 this picture passed to Sylvan. Shortly before his death Sylvan gave it to me (his favorite nephew). Original drawing over a mass-reproduced color image is perhaps the perfect embodiment of Warhol's art. UNIQUE. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

KILL DEVIL HILL: Discovering the Secret of the Wright Brothers.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin 1979 1st printing. - SIGNED BY NEIL ARMSTRONG; HARRY COMBS; AND FOUR MEMBERS OF THE WRIGHT FAMILY. This book is boldly signed in ink on the front free endpaper by author Harry Combs; Ivonette Wright Miller and husband Harold S. Miller; Horace Wright and wife Susan B. Wright; and Neil Armstrong. Combs is a member of the National Aviation Hall of Fame. Ivonette Wright Miller and Horace Wright were brother and sister; they were nephews of Orville and Wilbur Wright via Lorin Wright. Harold Miller was the executor of Orville's estate. Ivonette and Harold were the public face of the Wright Family; Horace and Susan's autographs are more unusual. This book was ostensibly signed by all parties at an event held in Dayton Ohio when the book was published. Neil Armstrong wrote the book's foreword and has signed his name in blue ink on the lower third of the ffep. This is a clear autograph made well before his 1994 decision to cease signing autographs. The book is in very good condition with a like dustjacket. There is a small address label of the former owner at the top of the ffep above Combs' signature. The book is very slightly cocked from previous readings and the jacket has mild edgewear in the form of stress marks and flaking (no chips or tears). The authenticity of the autographs is guaranteed.         THE KENYON REVIEW, special issues for a patron

(Kenyon College) 1979-1982, (Gambier, OH) - The first sixteen issues of the New Series of this important American literary magazine. These are special issues with loose signatures laid into the covers. According to a letter from the editors dated 1990, included here, these issues were specially done for a patron who donated $100 per issue in exchange for autographed copies. A later note from an editorial assistant at the time states that the donor actually contributed much more than the stated amount per issue, more like $8000, and that only four years of signed copies were done, thus making this complete and the only known set. Nearly every contribution is SIGNED by the author, a total of more than 200 signatures, including duplicates, and including several winners of the Nobel Prize. Some of the better known authors: Samuel Beckett, Alexander Solzhenitsyn (3), Italo Calvino, Joseph Brodsky (2), Czeslaw Milosz, Harold Pinter, Derek Walcott, Claude Levi-Strauss, Woody Allen (2), James Merrill (2), George Crumb, Amy Clampitt (4), Ursula Le Guin (3), William Gass, Robert Hass, James Dickey (2), Sharon Olds, Rita Dove, W. D. Snodgrass, Joyce Carol Oates (3), Robert Bly, E. L. Doctorow, Barry Hannah, Michael Harper, David Ignatow, Mary Jo Salter, Christopher Logue, Anthony Hecht (2), Guy Davenport (2), Robert Pinsky, Harold Bloom, Tom Disch, Patricia Hampl, John Hollander, Alfred Corn, Brad Leithauser (2), etc. Two issues are missing a leaf with writings by Gunter Grass in one and Derek Walcott in the other. We suspect that these were never returned by the authors. Near Fine and quite exceptional, likely unique [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Cleopatra und Meleager. Cleopatra perfuading Meleager to take his Arms in defence of his country.

Princeton, N.J.: Ontario Review Press [1979]. Post card poem. First separate edition, first issue (with "God bless him" in the first line of the third stanza"). Poem card. Fine. Very scarce, traditionally one of the hardest Updike items to find, especially in the first issue. Reportedly only a total of 100 copies of both issues together were published. De Bellis and Broomfield A77: "Roberts reports 100 copies in the entire edition; number in each printing not established." In our experience, the first issue is much the scarcer.

Random House, 1979. Hardcover. Acceptable. New York: Random House, 1979. First Edition, First Printing. Association copy, seemingly inscribed by people who may have known Cormac McCarthy or inspired characters in Suttree. In the original dust jacket with the price of $12.95 intact. In Fair condition, in a Good Minus dust jacket. The boards show soiling, with heavy wear at the corners. Spine cloth heavily worn. Front hinge starting. Pages are in fair condition as well, with water warping, light pencil marking. The dust jacket shows edge wear, surface wear and creasing. The book was lent out by a woman named Kit, who had each reader write an inscription. The front free end paper and the following page have a total of four gift inscriptions to a Kit and Barb, and the inscriptions suggest the people who wrote them knew Cormac McCarthy personally, or found themselves written into the book itself. A truly one-of-a-kind copy, offering an interesting glimpse into the background of the novel. The inscriptions, as far as can be deciphered, are as follows:
