Chi Pai-shih / Folio of 10 @ 15"x10 1/2" landscape prints from works at the Chung King museum, Shanghai, 1979

Shanghai People's Art Publishing Co., Shanghai 1979 - Shanghai: Shanghai People's Art Publishing Co. 1979. Folio, 10 @ 15" x10 1/2 " prints from Chi Pai-shih works, held in a simple folding heavy paper folio with a print reproduced on its front, as well. Reproduced subtly, apparently photographically on unpretentious, non-glossy, though fairly heavy, paper. Prints are near fine to fine, enclosing folio shows toning and a bit of light dust and a minor perimeter wear, better than Very Good itself. An unusual and scarce offering of the works of Chi Pai-shih (1861-1951), a celebrated Chinese painter whose simple life and attitude is expressed in his art. For a 1960 retrospective on him, De Young Gallery curator Alice Boney wrote "[Chi's] life was a dedicated one, a ceaseless struggle to capture for himself and the world in the simplest, truest terms the beauty and inner spirit of all that lived and grew about him."         Self Portraits by Women Artists Holding Palettes

Cambridge, MA: , 2014 Cambridge, MA. 2014. Unique artist's book, on Arches hot pressed watercolor paper, signed by the artist, Jean Segaloff, on the last image. Page size: 7 x 6.5 inches: 14pp. Bound: pages hinged with metal screws on boards covered with painted paper on front panel, custom-made clamshell box with deep cerulean blue label stamped in gold with the title, box by Cynthia Fields-Belanger. The images are accomplished in acrylic medium, watercolor, gouache, pen, alkyd oil paint and pencil and collaged onto board. A separate page of text, on Arches paper printed in black, lists the 7 artists: 1. Elisabet Vigee LeBrun, 2. Nora Heysen, 3. Judith Leyster, 4. Ellen Emmet Rand, 5. Emily Eardler Childers, 6. Elisabetta Sirani, 7. Anna Bilinska-Bohdanowicz. Each artist is pictured with her palette - as if caught in the middle of work. The portrait of each is accompanied by a brief biography. The images are compelling - with the artist gazing out intentely at the reader - as if challenging us to dispute their status as artist. Evoking the book jacket for Germaine Greer's s seminal book, The Obstacle Race: The Fortunes of Women Painters and Their Work (1979 we savor the artist's whose work did survive to be documented.         Unsigned Autographed Note regarding a low-budget film

, 1979. 1979. Unbound. 1 page on lined notebook paper, 6 x 8.75 inches, no place, no date, circa 1979. This note is written in French about an American film called "Fingers" for publication in a brochure of the American Film Institute. Translated in full: "'All that is unbelievable remains decorative,' said Jean Cocteau. Each sequence of 'Fingers' is marked by a deliberate and elegant crudeness. Fingers is one of those low-budget American films placing a lot of stock in bizarre sexual practices and violence, but what makes it superior to productions of the same genre is that it truly has a style, at once precise and precious. The dryness of the treatment is only too apparent; the sentiments are neither shown nor expressed but we divine them. The camera of J.T. is rigorous. The actors, Hervé Keitel and Tisa Farrow, are admirable." Accompanied by a letter from the American Film Institute attesting to the note's authenticity. The note has an uneven lower edge and is neatly mounted to a black board measuring 6.5 x 9 inches. Very good(-) condition. French director of New Wave films.

        Reading is Fun!

Printed for Reading is Fundamental, Inc. in collaboration with the Mattel Foundation, 1979. Printed for Reading is Fundamental, Inc. in collaboration with the Mattel Foundation, 1979 Color Lithograph, 35 ½ x 23 inches. Printed for Reading is Fundamental, Inc. in collaboration with the Mattel Foundation, 1979. Signed and inscribed by the artist for his friend and contemporary children's author & illustrator James Marshall: "For Jim / With love! / Maurice Sendak / Mar. '79". Image depicts three characters from Where the Wild Things Are (1963): Max sits in his wolf costume reading Where the Wild Things Are, while two Wild Things sit behind him- one is sitting on a book, wearing a party hat, and holding cutlery above his head in preparation to eat a feast of books (including Picture Books by Randolph Caldecott, Fairy Tales by the Brothers Grimm, and a volume of nursery rhymes), and the other is wearing a book as a hat and holding a goblet with a book topped with a cherry. In the background, a crescent moon is nose-deep in a book. Below the image is the capitalized serif text: "READING IS FUN!," along with publication information and the artists' inscription. Near fine and bright, with slight rippling and a few faint traces of light smudging to the foot of the poster. In a silver metal frame. A lovely copy with a warm inscription. This poster is inscribed to James Marshall, children's author and illustrator, best known for his 1972 story about two hippopotami, George and Martha, as well as other unique, lovable characters. Sendak and Marshall were close friends with similar interests. Although they had hoped to work collaboratively, Sendak and Marshall's joint works were all published posthumously after Marshall's death in 1992. In addition to an introduction he wrote for the collection of George and Martha stories, George and Martha: The Complete Stories of Two Best Friends, Sendak also created illustrations for Marshall's unpublished manuscript Swine Lake, which was later published by Harper and Collins in 1999. In addition to enjoying their friendship, Sendak revered Marshall's creative abilities, writing in his introduction to George and Martha: "Marshall is the last of a long line of masters that began in the late 19th century with the pre-eminent English illustrator, Randolph Caldecott…settled finally, splendidly, on the judicious, humane, witty and astonishingly clever head of James Marshall." In an effort to increase children's welfare and draw attention to social problems such as malnutrition, education, and child labor laws, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared 1979 the "International Year of the Child" in a proclamation signed January 1, 1979. In the same year, Maurice Sendak created an original illustration for Reading is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF), which collaborated with the Mattel Foundation on specific projects relating to the International Year of the Child. While the Mattel Foundation supports children's early learning and development in a variety of fields, RIF is specifically focused on children's literacy and access to books. In 1979, RIF created the event "Reading is Fun Day," as "a time to recognize the pleasures found in books and to mark the start of summer reading" and as the high point of the organization's initiative for the International Year of the Child. On October 11, 1979, schools around the United States received new books for their students, along with Reading is Fun posters and bookmarks designed by Sendak. While the physical poster is indicative of RIF and UNESCO's projects, Sendak's original illustration is a testament to the importance of children's books and illustration. Aside from the obvious allusion to his Wild Things, Sendak references the historical importance of Randolph Caldecott and the brothers Jacob and Wilhem Grimm. While the Grimms' fairy tales "led to the birth of the science of folklore" as well as the genre of children's literature, Randolph Caldecott similarly revolutionized children's literature with his renowned and beloved illustrations, which inspired the Caldecott Medal for children's illustrators. Like. Inscribed by Author. 1st Edition. Color Lithograph. Fine. 35 ½ x 23 Inches.

Velazquez :the artist as a maker. With a catalogue raisonne of his extant works. By Jose Lopez-Rey. [Werkverzeichnis.]

Lausanne : Bibliotheque des Arts, 1979.. XIII, 541 S. Originalleinen mit Schutzumschlag.. Nummeriertes Exemplar Nr. 369/960. Umschlag beschädigt, mit Klebestreifen repariert, sonst gutes Exemplar. - As some reviewers of the earlier versions of this study perceptively noted, Velazquez is, in my view, one of the few painters whose work vitally responds to a creative intention. It follows that the meaning of any of his paintings ought to be sought precisely where it was achieved, in the painting itself. The tenets of tradition or of modernity, artistic theories, iconographical lore, and ways of life and thought current in Velazquez' time or with which he may have been acquainted were, of course, part of his world, and I have delved into them. They form the common background from which he distinctly starts as a maker of new art realities.

Jeddah, Oxford, New York, 1979-1984.. 1) Evolution and Mineralization of the Arabian-Nubian Shield. (I.A.G. Bulletin No. 3). Jeddah, 1979-1980. 4 vols. 2) Abdulaziz A. M. Extremely rare collection of bulletins and research publications, all designated as "internal publications of limited distribution" and available only through the Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences in Jeddah. The Faculty of Earth Sciences at King Abdulaziz University is considered the first specialized geology college in the Middle East and has remained a force in research since its foundation in 1970. It was founded as the Institute of Applied Geology (associated with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of Saudi Arabia), but in 1980 became one of the King Abdulaziz University schools. The college published a journal, the first three issues of which were entitled "I.A.G. Bulletins" (of which the first two saw virtually no distribution beyond the immediate Faculty); the series was then continued in Nos. 4-6 as "F.E.S Bulletins" before ceasing publication in 1984. Of this rare periodical, the present collection includes Nos. 3 and 5-6. Also included is No. 16 of the F.E.S. Research Series, a revised version of the author's Ph.D. thesis in Geology submitted to the University of Western Ontario, Canada, in 1978. - Well preserved; most volumes with contemporary ms. ownership of the geologist John Randolph Vail (a contributor), another with stamps of the Geology Library, Imperial College, London / Watts Library.

        Die Dicke Schwester.

1979.. Farblithographie. 49 x 64 cm. Pressetext. Auflage 200 Exemplare links Nummeriert 50/200 rechts unten Signiert. 2 kleine Fleckchen im Rand, sonst tadellos.
