A Testament of Faith: A Leaf from a Copy of the First American Bible, Translated into the Langauge of the Algonquian Indians by John Eliot and Printed at Cambridge in New England in the Year 1663 [Original Leaf from the Eliot Indian Bible]

Boston: Charles E. Goodspeed & Co. 1979, edition limited to 87 copies. () 10 + leaf Ggg from the Eliot Indian Bible. Near fine. Octavo. Blue cloth in matching blue slipcase. Glassine dust jacket. Gilt title to spine. Leaf from bible tipped in after title page. The leaf is from the Book of Chronicles, with printer's signature Ggg. The leaf itself is fine, with one small chip and one small closed tear (less than 0.25") to top edge. The book has some foxing to endpapers and foredges and some minor shelfwear to boards and slipcase. Some light discoloration to cloth of book and slipcase. The glassine has light wear to extremities. An excellent example of this leaf book. Printed by the Stinehour Press. One of only 87 copies of A Testament of Faith, containing an original leaf from the first American bible, the Holy Bible: Containing the Old Testament and the New. Translated into the Indian Language. John Eliot was a missionary to the Algonquin-speaking native peoples of New England and printed his bible, now popularly known as the Eliot Indian Bible, in Algonquin. The New Testament appeared in 1661 and the Old Testament, from which this leaf was taken, in 1663. The Eliot Indian Bible is today regarded as a monument of American printing and one of the most important books printed in North America (Disbound and Dispersed 167.5).

Random House 1979 - New York: Random House, 1979. First Edition, First Printing. Association copy, seemingly inscribed by people who may have known Cormac McCarthy or inspired characters in Suttree. In the original dust jacket with the price of $12.95 intact. In Fair condition, in a Good Minus dust jacket. The boards show soiling, with heavy wear at the corners. Spine cloth heavily worn. Front hinge starting. Pages are in fair condition as well, with water warping, light pencil marking. The dust jacket shows edge wear, surface wear and creasing. The book was lent out by a woman named Kit, who had each reader write an inscription. The front free end paper and the following page have a total of four gift inscriptions to a Kit and Barb, and the inscriptions suggest the people who wrote them knew Cormac McCarthy personally, or found themselves written into the book itself. A truly one-of-a-kind copy, offering an interesting glimpse into the background of the novel. The inscriptions, as far as can be deciphered, are as follows: [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

OTHER VOICES, OTHER ROOMS - Rare Fine Copy of The Limited Edition

Franklin Center, PA: Franklin Mint, 1979 - 1st Printing. Signed. 194 pages. Published in 1979. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the most sensational American literary debuts of the 20th century. Limited Edition, as stated. There is no ISBN. The book is now rare. A brilliant production by Franklin Mint: Regular-sized volume format. Brown leather boards with gilt design embossed on the cover and gilt titles embossed on the spine, as issued. Text by Truman Capote. Capote has also written a lovely and nostalgic Introduction which appears in this edition only. Art by Bob Dacey. Gilt paper edges. Silk cloth endpapers. Bound-in satin ribbon marker. Printed on acid-free archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Re-presents, in a beautiful collectible format, Truman Capote's sensational debut, "Other Voices, Other Rooms". Capote was twenty-four years old when the book was first published in 1948. From the beginning, Capote aspired to and achieved a clean, immaculate style, what he once called the "authentic American voice", which only John Updike and Joan Didion have matched since. The purity of his prose helped define the post-Hemingway and post-Faulkner American literary style, remains refreshingly contemporary, and is a very effective antidote to the many toxic "post-modern" writers today, who cannot write a single decent sentence in the English language. As a writer, Capote had an equal number of admirers and detractors. But to have someone like Cynthia Ozick wax rhapsodic over the first time she read "Other Voices, Other Rooms" is worth more than a thousand words from any other writer. Another great fellow writer considers him F. Scott Fitzgerald's successor: "The scene stirring with rightness and strangeness, the compressed phrase, the exact yet imaginative word, the devastating metaphorical aptness, a feeling of concentrated excess which at the same time gives the effect of being crystalline" (James Dickey). An absolute "must-have" edition for Truman Capote collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Edition, indicated as such on the Front Limited-Edition Statement Page, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue ink-pen by Truman Capote. This edition is now highly collectible in its own right. This is one of very few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Copies of the 1948 First Edition available online command $4000 on average regardless of condition. Copies of this edition command more than $1000. A rare signed copy thus. Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" is widely regarded as one of the greatest books of the 20th century. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A flawless collectible copy. The Speaking Picture Book. A Special Book with Picture, Rhyme and Sound for Little People.

      - N.d., circa 1890s. Sixteenth Edition. With nine ivory tassels or pulls with strings attached, which when pulled out from the foreedge or side of the box, produce various sounds: a cock crowling, birds chirping, a donkey bray, a bleat, a moo, a coo, etc. Described by Peter Haining as "The piece de resistance of any collection of movables, or toy-books for that matter". See Haining "Movable Books", New English Library, 1979, p. 136. (Note Haining has in illustration a copy of 17th Edition and he dates the book circa 1893.) The book was produced in Nuremberg by an unknown firm, according to Haining, and as the title page discloses, translated versions were made available in French, Spanish, and as this copy, in English. The sharp chromolithography of the cover and eight other illustrations is inquestionably German and Bavarian. With 22 pp of text, including text on FEP (but not counting cover.) Measures 12.25 x 9.25 x 2.5 inches, or 32 x 24 x 6.5 cm. A minor closed tear along lower hinge of several leaves. Age toning to pages, with some light finger soiling in margins. Light wear of gilt on foreedges. Light rubbing along cloth of spine edge. Not all the sounds are so easily distinguishable, as was probably always the case, but they are all here. Seldom found in completely working order as is this example. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Countercoup: The Struggle for the Control of Iran

Mcgraw-Hill, USA 1979 - Signed 0070535906 217 pages. Black and white photos. Signed by author upon front free endpaper beneath his chilling hand-written inscription "For Leo with warmest regards from his fellow liquidator." Kermit Roosevelt was given the go-ahead to mastermind the overthrow of democratically elected Iranian President Mossadegh after the latter nationalized the Iranian oil industry in 1951. "Roosevelt explains in minute-by-minute detail how he performed his mission. He tells with whom he worked, how he worked, and how the plan was almost aborted." - from dust jacket. "Kermit Roosevelt admitted on NPR radio that in 1953 the CIA and British intelligence carried out a wave of bombings and shootings in Iran. He then went on to brag about how they subsequently blamed the bombings on Iran's President, Mossadegh." - from an online reference. An important book, particularly given America's current preoccupation with Iran, again. Average wear to unmarked book. Binding sound. Various substantial defects to dust jacket which is now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. A significant piece of American, and Iranian, history. Collaborative Archive: Letters, Illustrations, Books

1979-1991. In the early 1980s, Burroughs collaborated with S. Clay Wilson on the German editions of Cities of the Red Night [Die Stadte der Roten Nacht, Frankfurt: Zweitausendeins, 1982] and The Wild Boys [Die Wilden Boys, Frankfurt: Zweitausendeins, 1980]. This archive includes: • correspondence related to this and other collaborations between Burroughs and Wilson, as follows: from 1979 to 1982, six items from the publisher to Wilson; from 1979 to 1985, three items from Burroughs' associate James Grauerholz to Wilson; and from 1985 to 1995, eleven items from Burroughs to Wilson. The earlier items, from the publisher and from Grauerholz, generally solicit drawings, convey approval for ideas, and give progress updates. The later items, from Burroughs himself (one typed note signed; four autograph postcards signed; six autograph cards signed), are more personal, frequently conveying gratitude for a gift or appreciation of Wilson's work. In one, Burroughs (according to a pencil note by Wilson, he is referring to The Chequered Demon) says "vintage Clay Wilson hilarious, horrible disgusting as life itself...Its fine its swell itsa gawdy taste of Hell." In another, in a card picturing a unicorn, Burroughs asks, "Did you see the Barnum & Bailey unicorn? I suspect it to be a goat." Several of the cards are holiday cards, and in one Burroughs wishes "All the best for 1986 and the time remaining to us all." In the last two items, Burroughs thanks Wilson for, respectively, the Graham Greene stories and for a cat book. He also complains about the heat: "Over 100 now for a week. Can't do anything but sit in my air conditioned house." This last card is signed "Bill Burroughs." All of the Burroughs' correspondence items (excepting the postcards) have envelopes; one of the postcards is near fine; the others are fine; many depict Burroughs' artwork. • three original pen-and-ink S. Clay Wilson illustrations for the German edition of Cities of the Red Night. Wilson was one of the group of artists who gained exposure in the underground comix of the 1960s counterculture. After R. Crumb, he is probably the best known of that group, and his images are almost certainly the most extreme: all of the underground comic artists sought to break barriers and defy convention, and Wilson's images are densely packed and full of overt sex and violence to a nearly unthinkable degree. In this he was very much like Burroughs, whose verbal imagery sought to shatter all barriers, preconceptions and hypocrisies; the collaboration between the two of them seems in retrospect to have been inevitable. These drawings were displayed at the Los Angeles County Art Museum in the show "Ports of Entry: William Burroughs and the Arts," which sought to convey the influence Burroughs has had on visual arts. Extraordinary images, and probably the best illustrations ever of Burroughs' writings. Burroughs himself appears as a character in one of the images. Two of the images are 5-1/4" x 9", the third is 5-1/4" x 10"; all three are matted and framed to approximately 16" x 19". Also together with the original layout and lettering for the title page of the book: three hand-lettered sheets and one printed sheet. • a trial edition of the German edition of The Wild Boys, rejected by Wilson, who was displeased with the endpapers, signed by Wilson; Wilson's own copy, bound in Niger goat and snakeskin, signed by Wilson and inscribed by Burroughs to Wilson. and the first German edition, signed by Burroughs and Wilson. Wilson's copy is fine in a custom folding chemise; the other tow have a bit of edge-rubbing and are otherwise fine in the publisher's slipcases. • the German edition of Cities of the Red Night, signed by Burroughs and Wilson. Fine in slipcase. ¶ A unique archive of an exceptional collaboration.

Gordon Matta-Clark : One for All - All for One.

[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
