[Manuscript]: A Married Man's Diary of a passionate love for another man in New York City (1979)

[New York City]. (1979). Blank book. Octavo. Quarter cloth and marbled paper over boards. A compelling diary kept by a married man (name withheld but identified in the diary): "at 37 in my married state!" - written at the culminating moment of a 15-month relationship with another man. His account consists of 10 manuscript pages in ink, covering a two-month period (February-March, 1979), with three additional pages of manuscript notes at the back (the remaining pages are blank). Near fine. The first page begins on February 9th, with the writer's [John] philosophical justifications for keeping a diary, inspired also by his current reading of Proust and D. H. Lawrence. In the second entry he begins to address the heart of the matter, giving an account of his friendship of over a year with a man (MR or Marc) that he hopes is on the verge of becoming romantic and sexual. The entries become more and more poignant, as his initial advances are rejected, and as he wrestles with conflicting emotions: "Here I am, feeling contrite, self-conscious again - another abortive pass at Marc - another irritated, pained rejection ... It's clear I want to separate the beautiful thing I felt, and want more of, with him from the other big realities of my life. And I can't trust him ... but still he gives me intense joy, intense pain. And always, too, the physical yearning. He is utterly beautiful ... I'm also willing to wait. It has to be reciprocal." With increasing emotion in this last three entries from March, he speculates at length on his and Marc's competing motivations, his urgent need for "the physical expression" (but also ambivalence about its consummation), and then describes how things turn out badly, culminating in a fight, and a mad "dash out into the night followed by hurled wet laundry into Columbus Avenue. ... God damn Marc for being so fascinating - or me, for being as fascinated by my own feelings for him." Laid-in is a manuscript note to John from Marc, written over a year later ("Mon. 5/19 - 1980") on a carbon receipt, in which he explains his attempts to get in touch. A provocative and moving testimony. .

Factory Records Newsletter and Shareholder's Analysis [with] Joy Division "Bandthe, Bandthe, Bandthe..." [Promotional sheet]

Manchester: Factory Records. September 1979. Original photocopied newsletter with promotional sheet. [2]pp + [2]pp. Two sets of loose sheets printed versos only attached with one staple. Near fine with some light wear at a staple and some corners, particularly the final sheet. A rare example of two seminal documents from Factory Records. The first, a "polemical newsletter written by Tony Wilson in September 1979, detailing Factory's activities to date, and future plans" (Peter Saville Estate 1-127 #10), is in essence a press release/bibliography describing in an often-sarcastic tone everything Factory Records had released up until that point, including items of dubious legitimacy ("Factory egg timer; menstrual art..."). Together with the newsletter is the first Joy Division promotional sheet, written by Ian Curtis, typed and signed Steve Morris which was sent out with the "Ideal For Living" EP in 1978. Rare. .

This copy is Inscribed on the dedication page by Dr. Lee to his star pupil Greg Louganis: "Greg, it is dedicated to such divers as you who must carry the burden of 'American Diving Supremacy' ---but whether you win or lose you will always be my diver 'Numero Uno' and my Number Two Son. Your Coach and #2 Big Daddy. Sammy." Dr. Lee was himself an Olympic diver, winning back-to-back gold medals in 1948 and 1952. Later he became a celebrated diving coach and worked with Greg Louganis from the time Louganis was in his early teens. When this book was published, the teenage Greg had already won an Olympic silver medal but was destined for greater glory in the 80s. Additionally, Louganis is the subject of several of the photos in this book as well. In later years, Greg Louganis became an outspoken and articulate advocate for gay rights and remains so to this day. A wonderful association between to gold metal winning Olympic divers. .

Allen & Unwin London 1979 - This is the thoroughly grown up edition with all three volumes in one book. The India paper used is as most bibles are printed; very fine paper that is also tough. Thus all three volumes are conveniently included in one handy sized book. The book is foil blocked on the black buckram cover, the text block edges are nicely blue spattered, and the glassine wrapper adds protection inside the handsome box. The paper label on the bo=x is in black and red, and it makes a handsome collectable. The De Luxe edition proved to be popular, and this is its seventh impression. As with most copies the thin paper does crease easily and this copy has a slightly creased title page. The spine is brightly gilt. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Operas of Benjamin Britten: The Complete Librettos Illustrated with Designs of the First Productions

Hamish Hamilton, London 1979 - RARE, POSSIBLY UNIQUE COPY OF THIS INDISPENSABLE WORK. This standard work will probably never be printed again, and certainly not with such lavish care. It is a wonderful labour of love, and contains all the libretti of every Britten opera. Contributors include Peter Pears, Janet Baker, Eric Crozier, Basil Coleman, Colin Graham, Hans Keller, John Piper, Myfanwy Piper and Andrew Porter. It also comes with a unique set of extras - a VERY RARE signed autographed message from Britten, saying 'With best wishes, Benjamin Britten 1963' written on a piece of lined notepaper, along with a handwritten note from the person who obtained it; an original photograph of Britten from his record company archive; and a signed original lithographic print of a Britten portrait by the artist Peter Kettle, produced for an exhibition at Sussex University. This set is a fine tribute to a great creative genius of British music, who remains the only British composer of the 20th Century whose every opera is now firmly established in the international opera repertoire. This is a very special, probably unique, collectors group of items, suitable for an archive or library purchase. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Housed in the original tan cloth slipcase. "This book was first published in 1970. I was fortunate to make this safari in East Africa before the Federation broke up and the different countries went their separate ways. It is, of course, still possible to see the parks mentioned in the book. This new edition is published in a format which, it is hoped, will be much more convenient to handle. It should therefore be easier to examine the pen drawings, and it is these which I regard as the kernel of the book. Although some of the colour plates are now shown as single-page ‘details’ only, it is to be hoped that this more manageable format will make the new Artist’s Safari a welcome successor to the first edition" (verso of half-title).

VERY VERY RARE PROOF - ANY PROOFS OF DEAN KOONTZ'S BOOKS FROM THE 1970s SIMPLY DO NOT COME UP FOR SALE - THIS IS ONLY THE 2ND PROOF OF THIS BOOK THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN FOR SALE. Book appears unread with pages that are white with sharp corners, no creased page corners, nice tight spine with no spine lean, no internal hinge splits, no former owner's markings or used bookstore stamps/stickers inside (author's name/book title was written on the otherwise blank spine), no scotch tape marks or other discoloration to endpapers, no wear to covers, creases at cover corners, no rubbing or soiling to covers, no bumped corners, no wear tO spine tips. Overall a FINE- book of a rare advance state (predating the pb trade edition) Dean Koontz first printing proof book. While the Koontz post-Putnam proofs (after 1993) are fairly common (like Dark Rivers, Intensity, and Sole Survivor), Koontz's Putman era proofs are quite scarce and rarely come up for sale as most are in the hands of collectors. I have a number of other U.S. and U.K. Dean Koontz 1st printing hardcover/paperback/magazine appearances up for sale. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Alfred Perlès, Wells, Somerset 1979 - Miller, Henry. [Alfred Perlès] TYPED BLUE AIRMAIL LETTER FROM ALFRED PERLES, Wells, Somerset to Henry Miller, Pacific Palisades, May 14th 1979. 1 1/2 pages. " Dear Henry / Had your last letter a few days ago, it's the shortest you ever wrote to me - just two sentences which, with a semi-colon in lieu of a full stop, could have been reduced to one. / But your handwriting seems still as steady and vigorous as ever. Your handwriting only, I'm afraid, but then you can't be a near-nonagenarian with impunity. And I'm fast catching up with you, at least insofar as the punishment is concerned. My daily consumption of all sorts of pills for survival is on the increase" "Betty Ryan agrees with you that Jay Martin is a louse. . . / Needless to say I'm extremely curious about your forthcoming opus on "Joey." Can't imagine that you can say anything new about me that you haven't said already before" Perles goes on to talk about Wells turning into a tourist attraction. . . / signed "Fred" Great letter in very good condition – a couple of chips from opening.
