The Key To Midnight - Uncorrected Proof

Pocket 1979 - ADVANCE UNCORRECTED PROOF (also commonly referred to as Advance Reading Copy, Advance Readers Edition or "ARC"), large (larger than the published pb) trade pb format with plain wrapper cover, printed in very small quantities several months before the trade pb release (book was used by editors/book reviewers in advance of hardcover publication). VERY VERY RARE PROOF - ANY PROOFS OF DEAN KOONTZ'S BOOKS FROM THE 1970s SIMPLY DO NOT COME UP FOR SALE - THIS IS ONLY THE 2ND PROOF OF THIS BOOK THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN FOR SALE. Book appears unread with pages that are white with sharp corners, no creased page corners, nice tight spine with no spine lean, no internal hinge splits, no former owner's markings or used bookstore stamps/stickers inside (author's name/book title was written on the otherwise blank spine), no scotch tape marks or other discoloration to endpapers, no wear to covers, creases at cover corners, no rubbing or soiling to covers, no bumped corners, no wear tO spine tips. Overall a FINE- book of a rare advance state (predating the pb trade edition) Dean Koontz first printing proof book. While the Koontz post-Putnam proofs (after 1993) are fairly common (like Dark Rivers, Intensity, and Sole Survivor), Koontz's Putman era proofs are quite scarce and rarely come up for sale as most are in the hands of collectors. I have a number of other U.S. and U.K. Dean Koontz 1st printing hardcover/paperback/magazine appearances up for sale. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

[Alfred Perlès] TYPED BLUE AIRMAIL LETTER FROM ALFRED PERLES, Wells, Somerset to Henry Miller, Pacific Palisades, May 14th 1979. 1 1/2 pages. " Dear Henry / Had your last letter a few days ago, it's the shortest you ever wrote to me - just two sentences which, with a semi-colon in lieu of a full stop, could have been reduced to one. / But your handwriting seems still as steady and vigorous as ever. Your handwriting only, I'm afraid, but then you can't be a near-nonagenarian with impunity. And I'm fast catching up with you, at least insofar as the punishment is concerned. My daily consumption of all sorts of pills for survival is on the increase" "Betty Ryan agrees with you that Jay Martin is a louse. . . / Needless to say I'm extremely curious about your forthcoming opus on "Joey." Can't imagine that you can say anything new about me that you haven't said already before" Perles goes on to talk about Wells turning into a tourist attraction. . . / signed "Fred" Great letter in very good condition – a couple of chips from opening.         16 Black Flag Flyers

California. [1979-1982]. First. Sixteen original flyers for the American punk rock band Black Flag, various sizes, in very good to near fine condition with some tape abrasions, slight creasing, and tiny chips from removed staples. Eleven of the flyers are confirmed as having artwork by Raymond Pettibon. Black Flag, widely regarded as one of the first hardcore punk bands, was formed in 1976 by its only continuous member, guitarist Greg Ginn. They were innovators of the West Coast punk sound and were influential in the counterculture of punk both in the U.S. and overseas. From 1981-1984 they were fronted by singer Henry Rollins, arguably their most notorious member. Raymond Pettibon, a highly collected American artist, is noted for his comic-like drawings, ink on paper, and his association with Black Flag and the mid-1970s to late 1980s punk scene. Pettibon, Ginn's younger brother, started as a bass player for the band. He suggested the band's name (changed from the original name, Panic, in late 1978) and also designed their logo of vertical bars, with which the band gained notoriety by spray painting it all around the Los Angeles area. Pettibon was also the unofficial artist for Ginn's record label, SST Records, which released influential recordings from other alternative bands such as the Minutemen, Husker Du, the Meat Puppets, Sonic Youth, and Dinosaur Jr. Details of the collection available upon request. .

Jacques Mesrine: Les Mains (The Hands). 1979.

1979 - Sequence of 5 original photos. Gelatine silver prints. Each photo: 60x50 cm. Sequence in an edition of 25 copies. Titled, numbered and signed by A. Bizos in black ink on the back of the first photograph. Alain Bizos took these photos of Jacques Mesrine, then French public enemy #1, chased by the entire French police force, in January 1979. A few months later, November 2, 1979, Jacques Mesrine was shot to death by the anti-gang police force of the chief of police Broussard. Here Mesrine makes fun of the police officer, showing he bears the same beard as Broussard's one, using precisely this particular desguise to escape him. As in a game. A childish mortal game. Fine. In Fair condition, in a Good Minus dust jacket. The boards show soiling, with heavy wear at the corners. Spine cloth heavily worn. Front hinge starting. The book was lent out by a woman named Kit, who had each reader write an inscription. The front free end paper and the following page have a total of four gift inscriptions to a Kit and Barb, and the inscriptions suggest the people who wrote them knew Cormac McCarthy personally, or found themselves written into the book itself. A truly one-of-a-kind copy, offering an interesting glimpse into the background of the novel. The inscriptions, as far as can be deciphered, are as follows: [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

OTHER VOICES, OTHER ROOMS - Rare Fine Copy of The Limited Edition

Franklin Center, PA: Franklin Mint, 1979 - 1st Printing. Signed. 194 pages. Published in 1979. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the most sensational American literary debuts of the 20th century. Limited Edition, as stated. There is no ISBN. The book is now rare. A brilliant production by Franklin Mint: Regular-sized volume format. Brown leather boards with gilt design embossed on the cover and gilt titles embossed on the spine, as issued. Text by Truman Capote. Capote has also written a lovely and nostalgic Introduction which appears in this edition only. Art by Bob Dacey. Gilt paper edges. Silk cloth endpapers. Bound-in satin ribbon marker. Printed on acid-free archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Re-presents, in a beautiful collectible format, Truman Capote's sensational debut, "Other Voices, Other Rooms". Capote was twenty-four years old when the book was first published in 1948. From the beginning, Capote aspired to and achieved a clean, immaculate style, what he once called the "authentic American voice", which only John Updike and Joan Didion have matched since. The purity of his prose helped define the post-Hemingway and post-Faulkner American literary style, remains refreshingly contemporary, and is a very effective antidote to the many toxic "post-modern" writers today, who cannot write a single decent sentence in the English language. As a writer, Capote had an equal number of admirers and detractors. But to have someone like Cynthia Ozick wax rhapsodic over the first time she read "Other Voices, Other Rooms" is worth more than a thousand words from any other writer. Another great fellow writer considers him F. Scott Fitzgerald's successor: "The scene stirring with rightness and strangeness, the compressed phrase, the exact yet imaginative word, the devastating metaphorical aptness, a feeling of concentrated excess which at the same time gives the effect of being crystalline" (James Dickey). An absolute "must-have" edition for Truman Capote collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Edition, indicated as such on the Front Limited-Edition Statement Page, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue ink-pen by Truman Capote. This edition is now highly collectible in its own right. This is one of very few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Copies of the 1948 First Edition available online command $4000 on average regardless of condition. Copies of this edition command more than $1000. A rare signed copy thus. Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" is widely regarded as one of the greatest books of the 20th century. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A flawless collectible copy.         The Speaking Picture Book. A Special Book with Picture, Rhyme and Sound for Little People.

      - N.d., circa 1890s. Sixteenth Edition. With nine ivory tassels or pulls with strings attached, which when pulled out from the foreedge or side of the box, produce various sounds: a cock crowling, birds chirping, a donkey bray, a bleat, a moo, a coo, etc. Described by Peter Haining as "The piece de resistance of any collection of movables, or toy-books for that matter". See Haining "Movable Books", New English Library, 1979, p. 136. (Note Haining has in illustration a copy of 17th Edition and he dates the book circa 1893.) The book was produced in Nuremberg by an unknown firm, according to Haining, and as the title page discloses, translated versions were made available in French, Spanish, and as this copy, in English. The sharp chromolithography of the cover and eight other illustrations is inquestionably German and Bavarian. With 22 pp of text, including text on FEP (but not counting cover.) Measures 12.25 x 9.25 x 2.5 inches, or 32 x 24 x 6.5 cm. A minor closed tear along lower hinge of several leaves. Age toning to pages, with some light finger soiling in margins. Light wear of gilt on foreedges. Light rubbing along cloth of spine edge. Not all the sounds are so easily distinguishable, as was probably always the case, but they are all here. Seldom found in completely working order as is this example. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Countercoup: The Struggle for the Control of Iran

Mcgraw-Hill, USA 1979 - Signed 0070535906 217 pages. Black and white photos. Signed by author upon front free endpaper beneath his chilling hand-written inscription "For Leo with warmest regards from his fellow liquidator." Kermit Roosevelt was given the go-ahead to mastermind the overthrow of democratically elected Iranian President Mossadegh after the latter nationalized the Iranian oil industry in 1951. "Roosevelt explains in minute-by-minute detail how he performed his mission. He tells with whom he worked, how he worked, and how the plan was almost aborted." - from dust jacket. "Kermit Roosevelt admitted on NPR radio that in 1953 the CIA and British intelligence carried out a wave of bombings and shootings in Iran. He then went on to brag about how they subsequently blamed the bombings on Iran's President, Mossadegh." - from an online reference. An important book, particularly given America's current preoccupation with Iran, again. Average wear to unmarked book. Binding sound. Various substantial defects to dust jacket which is now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. A significant piece of American, and Iranian, history.
