        The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt.

New York: Coward, McCann & Geoghegan, 1979. First edition, first printing of the first book in the author's acclaimed Theodore Roosevelt Trilogy. Octavo, original black cloth. Inscribed by the author on front free end paper in the year of publication , "To Barbara and Jerry (observing the Rooseveltian scheme of masculine/feminine priorities) with best wishes from Edmund Morris June 14, 1979." The recipients were Jerome Alden and his wife ballerina Barbara Gaye. Alden was the author of one man-play Bully about Theodore Roosevelt and known as a playwright and screenwriter. Also laid in is a thank-you note and envelope written in Morris?' hand which reads, " Dear Jerry, This is just to thank you and Barbara for all your good wishes about the Pulitzer, and in particular for the excellent dinner at Alfredo's. It was a pleasure seeing you again, Sincerely, Edmund." Near fine in a very good dust jacket with a few small closed tears. A nice example with noted provenance. Edmund Morris is an American writer best known for his presidential biographies. The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt won a Pulitzer Prize and the 1980 National Book Award in Biography, The Rise covers the time from Roosevelt's birth through his ascendancy to the Presidency, and Theodore Rex is"[e]pic in scope and vast in detail" (City Journal).

Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume V, Part 1, The Exchequer Years 1922 - 1929, with two typed and signed letters by the author to his proof reader

William Heinemann Ltd., London 1979 - This is the British first edition with two typed, signed letters from the author to his proof-reader. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - eighteen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. The British first editions of the Companion volumes for Volume V of the Official Biography are among the most keenly sought and prohibitive to acquire of all first edition Official Biography volumes. There was only a single printing in England and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes. Here is an author’s presentation copy of the first of the three Volume V Companions, the British first edition, only printing. The volume contains documents from the years 1922 to 1929, from the time when Churchill left the Liberal Party, rejoined the Tories, and became Chancellor of the Exchequer (1924-1929). This copy came to us with two letters about the volume from the author, Sir Martin Gilbert, to Lloyd L. Thomas, one of the author’s proofreaders. Thomas is specifically thanked by name by the author in the Acknowledgements, page xxii, for "help in proof-reading." The author’s first signed letter to Thomas, dated 31 August 1978, is both lengthy and substantive. Much of the letter concerns the challenges and tasks attendant to publication of this document volume. In the letter’s fourth paragraph, Gilbert discusses the pressure placed upon him by his publisher to limit biographic text about the war years to 700 pages. Gilbert states in his letter "I cannot imagine how it will be done." Indeed, it was not done and the historian trumped the publisher. Gilbert would ultimately write two Official Biography main text volumes chronicling Churchill’s war years, each considerably longer than 700 pages. Gilbert closes with a request for further proof-reading assistance from Thomas with the final page proofs of this document volume. The letter is hand-signed "with kind regards, | yours sincerely, | Martin Gilbert". The second letter, dated 21 September 1978, clearly indicates that Thomas consented to further proof-reading of the volume for Gilbert. Gilbert writes: "Thank you so much for the further proofs " Gilbert talks about handing over the next two document volumes to the printer and solicits Thomas’ further assistance: "If, when the winter nights are on us, you feel like tackling some more, there will certainly be no shortage of printed pages!" The letter is hand-signed "yours most sincerely | Martin Gilbert." Thomas clearly assented to Gilbert’s request for further proof-reading, as he is thanked in the acknowledgements of the next two document volumes as well. Condition is very good in a very good dust jacket. The mammoth red cloth binding remains square and intact with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. We note very light scuffing and shelf wear. The contents remain bright with no previous ownership marks. Spotting and soiling is confined to the page edges. The red-stained top edge is mildly sunned to dark pink. The dust jacket is complete, with no losses or tears. There were two prices on the lower front dust jacket flap, an introductory price good "until 1st February, 1981" and a higher price above. Both prices remain intact. We note very light soiling and overall toning, but no sunning of the spine text. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Condition of both letters is excellent, both neatly creased from previous folds, but otherwise unmarked. Please note that this large, heavy book may require additional postage. Temples of Power

Burford: Cygnet Press, 1979. Boyd Harte's arresting lithographs of power stations, sub-stations and generating stations - one of only 250 copies. No. 95 of 250 copies, signed by author and artist. 16 lithographs by Glynn Boyd Harte, printed at The Curwen Press on Van Gelder all-rag, mould-made paper. Type set in Monotype Walboum and printed on. Oblong folio, 17.5 x 13 inches, original quarter blue cloth over patterned paper covered board, with a repeated pattern of Battersea Power Station in red, in the original dust wrapper with a panoramic view towards Battersea Power Station. Jacket chipped at edges and with a stain on the rear but generally a very good copy. John Betjeman writes of Boyd Harte in his foreword, "electricity has inspired him wth its cleanness and invisibility". Boyd Harte's lithographs of London power stations and former generating, lighting and sub-stations are arresting in their simple, colourful strength. At the time of publication Temples of Power sparked a great interest in power stations amongst historians and is regarded by many to be directly responsible for the remodelling of Bankside Power Station as Tate Modern.

+++ 15 x 21,5 Cm, 4,4 kg.         THE LIFE & STRANGE SURPRISING ADVENTURES OF ROBINSON CRUSOE OF YORK

London: The Basilisk Press, 1979. No. 6 OF 25 SPECIALLY BOUND COPIES WITH 10 ORIGINAL PRINTS (of a total edition of 515) n. Hardcover. 328 x 245 mm. mm (13 x 9 3/4"). 180 pp., [1] leaf (blank), [1] leaf (colophon). No. 6 OF 25 SPECIALLY BOUND COPIES WITH 10 ORIGINAL PRINTS (of a total edition of 515). Publisher's original dark blue morocco by Tony Miles of London, upper board with gilt vignette reproducing Craig's woodcut portrait of Crusoe, raised bands, gilt spine titling, gilt dragon ornament to tail panel, decorative blind roll to turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. (Without the publisher's box.) With more than 80 small wood engravings in the text by Edward Gordon Craig, including 15 in the introduction, and WITH 10 ORIGINAL PRINTS, SIX OF THEM SIGNED with initials and dated, these bound in at the rear in windowed French fold leaves. Original prospectus laid in. Designed by Bernard Roberts and printed at The John Roberts Press on Van Gelder mouldmade paper. In mint condition. From one of the most celebrated private presses of the last quarter of the 20th century, this is an extremely pleasing edition of one of the most widely published books in history--Defoe's classic castaway story, its 1719 first appearance often credited as the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre. While our volume is attractively printed and handsomely bound, it is memorable above all because of the wood engravings of Edward Gordon Craig. While they were originally created in 1924 to illustrate an edition of "Crusoe" for Count Harry Kessler's Cranach Press, this is the first appearance of the woodcuts; the Cranach edition never materialized, mainly because of the artist's obsessive fastidiousness, and he continued to work on the woodcuts into the 1960s. The son of acclaimied British actress Ellen Terry, Craig (1872-1966) began his career as a theater manager, stage designer, and actor. During the early 1890s, he met the artist William Nicholson, who introduced him to woodcutting and engraving, specifically the creation of simple black and white illustrations. Watching Nicholson at work inspired Craig to follow this art form, and he obviously had a natural gift for it. In 1898 he launched a new magazine, "The Page," illustrated with his own wood engravings. He produced some of the earliest "white line" wood engravings of the modern era, a technique that leaves the incised line uninked and the block's surface inked, the resulting image appearing to emerge from the paper, rather than being impressed upon it. The artist's son, Edward A. Craig, provides insight into the creation of his father's illustrations in his extensive introduction here, which also includes three essays on "Robinson Crusoe" by artist Craig. The Basilisk Press was founded in 1978 by Charlene Garry, who had opened a shop in the Hampstead section of London exclusively to sell modern private press books. Garry produced an acclaimed facsimile edition of the Kelmscott "Chaucer" and the first facsimiles of the "Red Books of Humphry Repton," with marvelous collotype plates. But though popular and to all appearances successful, the shop and press were undercapitalized, and, due to financial stresses, the Basilisk Press and Bookshop closed in 1988, to much lamentation.
