The Postman Always Rings Twice (Two Original screenplays for the 1981 film)

Los Angeles, CA: Columbia Broadcasting System, 1979. Two draft scripts for the 1981 film. One is a Second Draft script, dated December 1979, the other is an Agency script in promotional printed wrappers, undated. Directed by Bob Rafelson, and based on the 1939 novel by James M. Cain, "Postman" was one of the gems of early 1980 cinema (along with "The Verdict") and neo-noir, and brought David Mamet to the attention of the filmmaking world, leading to his working not only as a screenwriter but an important director. Mamet's grim update of Cain's classic hard-boiled novel was somewhat panned on release, but is today held in high regard, and is considered a major influence on the genre. Shot on location in Santa Barbara, California. Script one: Red studio wrappers. Title page present, dated December, 1979, noted as SECOND DRAFT, with credits for screenwriter Mamet and novelist Cain. 123 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 121. Photographically reproduced. Title page present, undated, with credits for screenwriter Mamet and novelist Cain. 118 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 117. Photographically reproduced.         Straight Life: The Story of Art Pepper (Signed First Edition)

New York: Schirmer Books, 1979. First Edition. First Edition. SIGNED by Art Pepper on the front endpaper. An astounding and underappreciated jazz autobiography. In just a few years, Pepper established himself as one of the greatest alto saxophonists of the be-bop era, often thought of as second only to Charlie Parker, and certainly a prime innovator in the West Coast jazz scene. But beginnning in 1954, difficulty with drug use caused Pepper to be incarcerated almost constantly (four separate terms) until 1965. Toward the end of his life he managed to stay clean, and during that time wrote this autobiography with his wife Laurie. The autobiography serves not only as a portrait of a great jazz artist, it is also a great document of not only the jazz world of the mid-century, but also the world of drug users and criminals on the West Coast during that time. Soon after publication of this book, Don McGlynn released the documentary, "Art Pepper: Notes from a Jazz Survivor," which featured extensive interviews with Pepper, his wife, and others. Pepper died only three years after the book was published, in 1982, and signed copies are rare. Fine in a bright, about Near Fine dust jacket, with a touch of wear to the jacket crown.

Where the Buffalo Roam: A Movie Based on the Life of Hunter S. Thompson (Original screenplay for the 1980 film)

Universal City, CA: Universal Pictures, 1979. Draft script for the 1980 film, more than a little loosely based on Hunter S. Thompson's obituary for his closest associate, Oscar Zeta Acosta, a.k.a. Dr. Gonzo, "The Banshee Screams for Buffalo Meat," which appeared in October 1977 issue of "Rolling Stone." An early draft, preceding the film's release by 18 months. A film that, despite being an unholy mess, represents in retrospect an intersection of ideas and talent, as well as the first of many messy attempts to commit to celluloid the basically un-filmable life and work of Hunter S. Thompson. Bill Murray, at this time little more than a droll comedic sensation, arguably made the first step toward becoming the four-dimensional icon he is today, though not necessarily by intention. Both Murray and Thompson had serious concerns about the quality of Kaye's script, and at the beginning of filming both Thompson and Ralph Steadman came onto the set as "executive consultants." Though the author says he did little other than "wander around and fire machine guns," his influence on Murray was profound. The actor became obsessed with his idol, and by all accounts became one with him. During production, Murray and Thompson engaged in a series of dangerous one-upmanship contests, including a Houdini-inspired stunt where Thompson tied Murray to a chair and threw him into a swimming pool. Murray nearly drowned before Thompson pulled him out. The pair's obsession with the film's poor script and continuity led to a hasty final addition of a voice-over narration and two explanatory scenes at the film's end. Three days prior to release, a press screening was canceled because the film was still being edited. When Murray returned to the Saturday Night Live set in the fall of 1980, he was still immersed in character, complete with long black cigarette holder, dark glasses, and nasty habits. One of the show's writers said that Murray "...was not Bill Murray, he was Hunter Thompson. You couldn't talk to him without talking to Hunter Thompson." (Doug Hill and Jeff Weingrad, "Saturday Night Live: A Backstage History," William Morrow, 1989) Red studio wrappers, dated May 23, 1979 on the front wrapper, with the Universal Studios logo as called for. Title page present, with credits for Thompson, screenwriter Kaye, and producer-director Art Linson. 167 leaves, eye-rest green, mechanically reproduced. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with three gold brads.

Provenienz: Sammlung Joanneum, Graz, Lugt 2709; Sammlung L. H. Philippi, Hamburg, Lugt 1335. Die Zuschreibung an den kaum bekannten Filippo Pedrini, den Sohn des in Bologna tätigen Malers Domenico Pedrini, gründet sich auf die unlängst von Clerici Bagozzi als Arbeit von Filippo Pedrini erkannte lavierte Federzeichnung „Deckenentwurf mit Bacchus, Ariadne, Diana und Minerva" im Art Institute in Chicago (H. Joachim/ S. Folds McCullagh, „Italian Drawings in the Art Institute of Chicago", Chicago und London, 1979, no. 147, pl. 154) und auf die von Veronika Birke Pedrini zugeschriebene lavierte Federzeichnung „Die Anbetung der Hirten" in der Albertina in Wien (V. Birke7 J Kertész, „Die Italienischen Zeichnungen der Albertina. Generalverzeichnis", 2 Bde., Wien, Köln, Weimar, 1992, Bd. II, Inv. Nr. 1868). Beide Zeichnungen sind bislang jedoch irrtümlich für Arbeiten von Ubaldo Gandolfi gehalten worden, dessen Zeichenstil eine gewisse Verwandschaft mit Filippo Pedrini besitzt. Unsere Bestimmung der Zeichnung wurde von Veronika Birke bestätigt (Brief vom 4. August 1995).

        The Right Stuff

New York: Farrar, Straus, Giroux, 1979. First edition. Octavo, original cloth with titles to the spine in silver. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Warmly inscribed by the author in the year of publication and additionally signed by pilot Chuck Yeager and by John Glenn; one of the Mercury Seven. Tom Wolfe began The Right Stuff at a time when it was unfashionable to contemplate American heroism. Nixon had left the White House in disgrace, the nation was reeling from the catastrophe of Vietnam, and in 1979--the year the book appeared--Americans were being held hostage by Iranian militants. Yet it was exactly the anachronistic courage of his subjects that captivated Wolfe. In his foreword, he notes that as late as 1970, almost one in four career Navy pilots died in accidents. "The Right Stuff," he explains, "became a story of why men were willing--willing?--delighted!--to take on such odds in this, an era literary people had long since characterized as the age of the anti-hero." "One of the most romantic and thrilling books ever written about men who put themselves in peril." (The Boston Globe). Listed by Modern Library as one of the top 100 nonfiction works of the twentieth century.

The Plan of St. Gall: A Study of the Architecture & Economy of, & Life in a Paradigmatic Carolingian Monastery. With a foreword by Wolfgang Braunfels, a translation into English by Charles W. Jones of the DIRECTIVES of Adalhard, 753-826, the Ninth Abbot of Corbie, and with a note by A. Hunter Dupree on the Significance of the Plan of St. Gall to the History of Measurement

Berkeley: University of California Press, 1979. First edition. 1073 illustrations. 4 vols. Folio. Full cream buckram, crimson gilt morocco title labels on spines. Fine (Spine label of Plan in Brief slightly dull). First edition. 1073 illustrations. 4 vols. Folio. The basis of this stunning, massive architectural monograph is a single drawing, in red and black ink on a 44 x 30-1/2 inch piece of vellum, made from 5 pieces, and completed between 820 and 830 AD most likely by the Benedictine Abbot Haito, bishop of Basel. But the plan of the Abbot of St. Gall (which, unfortunately, was never actually built) is more than a blueprint for a monastery. Haito's plan furnishes clues to the most minute, intimate details of monastic life, right down to personal hygiene (Haito provided one toilet for every two people). Horn's text and Born's drawings recreate the entire fabric of an idealized 9th-century Carolingian monastery. The book is, therefore, a study of medieval technology and of medieval attitudes to medicine, education, religion, work, and almost every other aspect of monastic life. A beautifully produced labor of love.

The Pobble Who Has No Toes

Brisbane: Locks' Press, 1979. Lock, Margaret. Folio. (10)ff. One of sixty copies, signed by illustrator and Locks' Press co-founder Margaret Lock. Eight black & white engravings accompany Lear's nonsense poem about a man who has his toes stolen (possibly by mermaids) while swimming across the Bristol Channel. This is the first book of the Locks' Press imprint, which was founded by the husband and wife duo, Fred and Margaret Lock, and focuses on small editions of literary texts that have stood the test of time. Bound in beige canvas, painted black at the spine to give a quarter-bound look, with lithographed endpapers evocative of underwater plants. Engraved paper label to upper cover continues the mermaid motif, as two mermaids recline onto the title text. Light rubbing to head and tail of spine, otherwise very fine.

Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume V, Part 1, The Exchequer Years 1922 - 1929, with two typed and signed letters by the author to his proof reader

London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1979. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is the British first edition with two typed, signed letters from the author to his proof-reader. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - eighteen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. The British first editions of the Companion volumes for Volume V of the Official Biography are among the most keenly sought and prohibitive to acquire of all first edition Official Biography volumes. There was only a single printing in England and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes. Here is an author?'s presentation copy of the first of the three Volume V Companions, the British first edition, only printing. The volume contains documents from the years 1922 to 1929, from the time when Churchill left the Liberal Party, rejoined the Tories, and became Chancellor of the Exchequer (1924-1929). This copy came to us with two letters about the volume from the author, Sir Martin Gilbert, to Lloyd L. Thomas, one of the author?'s proofreaders. Thomas is specifically thanked by name by the author in the Acknowledgements, page xxii, for ?"help in proof-reading.?" The author?'s first signed letter to Thomas, dated 31 August 1978, is both lengthy and substantive. Much of the letter concerns the challenges and tasks attendant to publication of this document volume. In the letter?'s fourth paragraph, Gilbert discusses the pressure placed upon him by his publisher to limit biographic text about the war years to 700 pages. Gilbert states in his letter ?"I cannot imagine how it will be done.?" Indeed, it was not done and the historian trumped the publisher. Gilbert would ultimately write two Official Biography main text volumes chronicling Churchill?'s war years, each considerably longer than 700 pages. Gilbert closes with a request for further proof-reading assistance from Thomas with the final page proofs of this document volume. The letter is hand-signed ?"with kind regards, | yours sincerely, | Martin Gilbert?". The second letter, dated 21 September 1978, clearly indicates that Thomas consented to further proof-reading of the volume for Gilbert. Gilbert writes: ?"Thank you so much for the further proofs…?" Gilbert talks about handing over the next two document volumes to the printer and solicits Thomas?' further assistance: ?"If, when the winter nights are on us, you feel like tackling some more, there will certainly be no shortage of printed pages!?" The letter is hand-signed ?"yours most sincerely | Martin Gilbert.?" Thomas clearly assented to Gilbert?'s request for further proof-reading, as he is thanked in the acknowledgements of the next two document volumes as well. Condition is very good in a very good dust jacket. The mammoth red cloth binding remains square and intact with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. We note very light scuffing and shelf wear. The contents remain bright with no previous ownership marks. Spotting and soiling is confined to the page edges. The red-stained top edge is mildly sunned to dark pink. The dust jacket is complete, with no losses or tears. There were two prices on the lower front dust jacket flap, an introductory price good ?"until 1st February, 1981?" and a higher price above. Both prices remain intact. We note very light soiling and overall toning, but no sunning of the spine text. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Condition of both letters is excellent, both neatly creased from previous folds, but otherwise unmarked. Please note that this large, heavy book may require additional postage.
