White House Years --- Years of Upheaval

Boston: Little, Brown and Company 1979 - "White House Years": Thick 8vo., blue cloth lettered in gilt; dust jacket, slightly soiled. First edition of Kissinger's National Book Award winner. A presentation copy, inscribed: "To Phil Habib, invaluable colleague and trusted friend. With affection and admiration, Henry A. Kissinger," on the half-title page. [Along with] "Years of Upheaval" (1982): 8vo., red cloth lettered in gilt; dust jacket. First edition. A presentation copy, inscribed: "To Phil Habib, who made many Secretaries of State look good. with the admiration and affection of his friend Henry A. Kissinger," on the half-title page; laid-in are Kissinger's business card and 3 pages of notes, probably written by Margaret Adams, the senior editor of Wadsworth Publishing, detailing relations between Habib and Kissinger, probably for a future interview with the latter. ----- The "New York Times" once judged U. S. Ambassador Philip Habib, "the outstanding professional diplomat of his generation." Like Secretary of State Kissinger, Habib was heavily involved in Middle East diplomacy, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1982. Upon his death, Kissinger said Habib was "every Secretary of State's idea of a great foreign service officer." Kissinger eulogized Habib with the statement, "He was one of my heroes. The great thing about him was that he was a terrific soldier." As evidenced by the numerous references to Habib in his memoirs, Kissinger relied a great deal on Habib's acumen and irreverence while serving as secretary of state. "I might not do what he said," asserted Kissinger, "But I wouldn't make a move without finding out what he thought." A handsome set with an exceptional provenance.       1979-1995. In the early 1980s, Burroughs collaborated with S. Clay Wilson on the German editions of Cities of the Red Night and The Wild Boys [Die Wilden Boys, Frankfurt: Zweitausendeins, 1980]. This collection includes correspondence related to this and other collaborations between Burroughs and Wilson, as follows: from 1979 to 1982, six items from the publisher to Wilson; from 1979 to 1985, three items from Burroughs' associate James Grauerholz to Wilson; and from 1985 to 1995, eleven items from Burroughs to Wilson. The earlier items, from the publisher and from Grauerholz, generally solicit drawings, convey approval for ideas, and give progress updates. The later items, from Burroughs himself (one typed note signed; four autograph postcards signed; six autograph cards signed), are more personal, frequently conveying gratitude for a gift or appreciation of Wilson's work. In one, Burroughs (according to a pencil note by Wilson, he is referring to The Chequered Demon) says "vintage Clay Wilson hilarious, horrible disgusting as life itself...Its fine its swell itsa gawdy taste of Hell." In another, in a card picturing a unicorn, Burroughs asks, "Did you see the Barnum & Bailey unicorn? I suspect it to be a goat." Several of the cards are holiday cards, and in one Burroughs wishes "All the best for 1986 and the time remaining to us all." In the last two items, Burroughs thanks Wilson for, respectively, the Graham Greene stories and for a cat book. He also complains about the heat: "Over 100 now for a week. Can't do anything but sit in my air conditioned house." This last card is signed "Bill Burroughs." All of Burroughs' correspondence items (excepting the postcards) have envelopes; one of the postcards is near fine; the others are fine; many depict Baaronurroughs' artwork. Also together with an original of Wilson's layout and lettering for the cover Cities of the Red Night [Die Stadte der Roten Nacht]: three hand-lettered sheets and one printed sheet.

Original August 16, 1979 Typed Letter Signed From Pulitzer Prize Winner Michael Shaara (CANDID DISCUSSION OF HIS FAMOUS MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT AND SUBSEQUENT DRUG OVERDOSE)

Original Letter, Tallahassee, FL 1979 - 8 1/2 X 11 Inches. Rare TLS (Typed Letter Signed) from Pulitzer Prize winning author Michael Shaara. Letter on author's personal "Tallahassee" stationery. Shaara was a lifetime writer, but consistently struggled with the page. and publishers apparently. As time would tell, he had but one truly great book in him, although he dreamed of an autobiographical Shakespeare novel that would top "The Killer Angels". Interestingly, Shaara also wrote the book "For the Love of the Game", later published and adapted to the Kevin Costner film of the same name. The Killer Angels was Shaara's Pulitzer Prize winner and is most certainly the book he is remembered for. In part, "Please excuse me for taking so long to answer your letter. First, I was out of the country and then when I go back I was sick for a while - one problem was drugs, overdose after a motorcycle accident." Boldly signed at the conclusion in blue ink. A very candid conversational letter in classic Shaara style. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The famous Ridley Scott movie of the same name, which was based on a Philip K. Dick novel, got its name from this book, although not the story: the script writer found this Burroughs book, liked the title, and the producers negotiated rights to the name.         Rothschild Gebetbuch,Exemplar Nr.525,

Expl.-No. 525 Versand D: 5,00 EUR

        Handwritten Manuscript Lyrics of Dreamin'

1979. Debbie Harry's handwritten manuscript (fair copy), titled at the top, and signed twice, of Dreaming Is Free, her brawny and lusty, gold selling single. The complete lyrics, all in her own handwriting, 27 lines (169 words), in blue ink, all of them on the recto side of an 8 1/2" X 13" sheet of yellow paper. Celestial Debbie has sealed her signature at the end with a kiss in pink lipstick. Ably framed (UV) with a color photograph of D. H. (white skirt and top, hands in pockets, head tilted, big smile). Lightening of the ink in a few places, otherwise fine condition, and this MS is so fair to behold, that if I had a tail, I'd wag it. Dreamin' was the lead single from Blondie's 4th album, Eat to the Beat, a red hot, new wave, punk rock hit, a sorceress' mix of beauty and power, from the "Buddy Holly/Rave On" school of songwriting, released in the gentler days of punk, just before the '70s gave way to the body piercing generation of living wind chimes, whose only fear was a junkyard magnet. The manuscript was gifted to a poorly promoted and lightly attended charity auction in 1992 and she came away from the encounter soured by the experience. So if you plan to get your own Debbie Harry manuscript, you better start stalking her right now, and be sure to come equipped with a donut for bait, a 3 layer blindfold, a rag soaked in chloroform, and a trunk lid that won't open from the inside. Near fine.

New York: Random House, 1979. First Edition. Hardcover. Acceptable. First Edition, First Printing. Association copy, inscribed by people who appear to have known Cormac McCarthy or inspired characters in Suttree. In the original dust jacket with the price of $12.95 intact. In Fair condition, in a Good Minus dust jacket. The boards show soiling, with heavy wear at the corners. Spine cloth heavily worn. Front hinge starting. Pages are in fair condition as well, with water warping, light pencil marking. The dust jacket shows edge wear, surface wear and creasing. The book was lent out by a woman named Kit, who had each reader write an inscription. The front free end paper and the following page have a total of four inscriptions to a Kit and Barb, and the inscriptions suggest the people who wrote them knew Cormac McCarthy personally, or found themselves written into the book itself. A truly one-of-a-kind copy, offering an interesting glimpse into the background of the novel.

Handbook of Physiology. A critical, comprehensive presentation of physiological knowledge and concepts. Section 2: The Cardiovascular System. 4 in 6 Vols. (all publ.).

      - American Physiological Society, Bethesda, Maryland, 1979-1984, 4°, ca. 3900 pp., zahlreiche Abbildungen, 6 orig. Leinenbände; St.a.Tit.; frisches Exemplar. 1.: The heart / volume editor, Robert M. Berne. 2.: Vascular smooth muscle / volume editors, David F. Bohr, Andrew P. Somlyo, Harvey V. Sparks, Jr. 3/1+2: Peripheral circulation and organ blood flow / volume editors, John T. Shepherd, Francois M. Abboud. 4/1+2: Microcirculation / volume editors, Eugene M. Renkin, C. Charles Michel. "The first edition of the Handbook of Physiology section on Circulation appeared between 1962 and 1965. This publication of the American Physiological Society consisted of three volumes that covered many aspects of the physiology of the heart and circulation. Since that time knowledge has advanced slowly in some areas of physiology, more quickly in others. Meanwhile the total body of information has grown almost exponentially, making it increasingly difficult to organize and meld old and new data to provide the reader with a comprehensive, critical appraisal of cardiovascular physiology. Nevertheless, the aim of the revised second Handbook section, retitled The Cardiovascular System, is to accomplish these goals and produce authoritative reference works with extensive bibliographies. The books will be useful to students of physiology at all stages of study, to professional physiologists, and to interested scien tists in related disciplines. The utility of the Handbook of Physiology, Circulation has been proved by its continued and ongoing use by many investigators and teachers, a condition the editors hope will also be true for this revision, but the accelerated pace of cardiovascular and other research will probably demand a subsequent edition in a shorter interval of time."         The Stand

UK First Edition, First Printing (New English Library 1979). First published in the US in the previous year. The first print run of this UK edition consisted of fewer than 1,000 copies, as opposed to the 70,000 printed in the US, making this edition very rare indeed. Foxing to top edge of text block with very light soiling to fore-edge. A few marks to front and rear boards. Binding is still nice, square and tight and there are no tears or inscriptions. Original dust jacket is price-clipped and has a few small nicks and tears to the top and a little rubbing to front and rear panels; spine panel laminate has lifted in places.

Autograph Letter Signed, in English, 2 separate folio pp with a 3 separate page folio addendum, all on printed "Erte" stationery, Paris, France, May, 7 1979 with signed transmittal envelope

Erte discusses the illustrations to be included in "Erte's Theatrical Costumes in Full Color," published in 1979 by Dover (reprinted in 2016). He gives detailed notes on the costume selection and placement to Stanley Applebaum, Editor-in-Chief at Dover. "Erte's Theatrical Costumes in Full Color," is a collection of 49 of Erte's exotic and historical costume designs for theater productions (and for well-known theater personalities), ballets, Folies-Bergere, and the like from 1911-1975. Included in the book are designs for a fan bearing slave girl, worshipper of Horus, wife of Russian Boyar, Ceres, a mermaid, and a gypsy dancer. The published book includes changes Erte listed in our letter. For example, the cover shows a costume for Ganna Walska in "Manon," 1920. In the letter, Erte lists this work as being on p. 10, suggesting that after receiving this letter, Applebaum changed the placement of the costume design.  The Gift-bearer for the show "Aladdin" at the Folies-Bergere, 1927 is in the book and in the letter is listed as being on p. 19. Erte mentions the design for the Monster from Scheherazade which is also in the book. Erte refers to Salome Estorick who wrote the book's preface. Erte writes, "I am sending you the information you asked for. To tell the truth I am not very happy about the selection of the illustrations - I think they could be much more typical of my work. First of all the design which I suppose is intended for p.1 is not a theatrical costume but an evening dress (so it has to be replaced). Then I think that there are too many costumes for Sheherazade [sic]; - I believe that four of them would be sufficient; the ones I like best are: "Monster" (p. 43), "Lady-in-waiting" (p. 44), "Shahriar" (p. 46) and "Jester (side 3). I should be very happy if you could replace the two costumes for a children ballet (p. 24 and p. 25) and the Chinese costume (p. 37) by something more effective. Would you kindly get in touch immediately with M. and Mr. Estorick at the Grovesnor Gallery in London (48 South Molton Street. Tel - 1-6290891) - they could supply you with some other designs. [Salome Estorick wrote the preface for Theatrical Costumes]. I am terribly sorry to give you so much trouble - but I really should love the new book would be as beautiful as the preceding ones you did. With my kindest regards, Cordially yours Erte 3 page addendum, separate folio Erte stationery sheets, Erte lists page numbers and titles of illustrations or comments on the illustration, starting with "Side 2... Front Cover...p. 46 Side 3.".

New York Rocker. Nos. 1 (February 1976) through 57 (May 1984) (all published)

[Alternate titles: New York Rocker Pix; NY Rocker; NYRocker.] Altogether 58 fascicules (includes the rare May 1979 "New York Rocker Pix" supplement, numbered separately as vol. 1, no. 1) comprising a complete run of the seminal New York punk and pop music tabloid, with articles, band interviews and reviews of live shows and recordings written by Alan Betrock (founder), Andy Schwartz (editor), Tad Among, Ken Barnes, Blondie, Victor Bockris, Jim Jarmusch, Amos Poe, Lance Loud, Anna Sui, Lester Bangs, Miriam Lina, and other scene stalwarts, covering artists including Patti Smith, The New York Dolls, The Ramones, The Talking Heads, Television, Iggy Pop, Blondie, Television, Richard Hell, Mink DeVille, The Dictators, Suicide, and others, with later issues tracking the global diaspora of punk and new wave music in the UK, Europe and elsewhere, as well as information on other scenes in the United States, including Los Angeles, Boston, and Minneapolis (where Schwartz began his rock journalism career as an undergraduate at the University of Minnesota), illustrated throughout with reproductions of photographs by Roberta Bayley, Lee Childers, Bob Gruen, Duncan Hannah and others. Sizes vary, ranging from 4to to small folio (nos. 1-24 and the "pix" supplement 29 x 43 cm; nos. 25-55 29 x 38.5 cm; nos. 56-57 20.5 x 27.5 cm) Illus. self wrpps. Some scattered tears, overall very good. New York (New York Rocker) 1976-1984. Together with three original mailing envelopes, one from November 1978 printed with the New York Rocker logo. Offering unparalleled journalistic coverage of the emergence of punk rock in NYC, New York Rocker was written by and for the movement's original clique in Manhattan's downtown arts and performance community. As the popularity of punk and new wave music grew, so did the publication's editorial scope and distribution. NY Rocker, as it was called in later issues, published continuously on a monthly or bi-monthly schedule until it went on hiatus in 1982, returning briefly for two reformatted and poorly distributed issues in 1984, after which it folded entirely. As of October 2017, WorldCat locates a number of partial holdings but only two complete runs in North America.
