The Magician of Lublin (Collection of three original title card maquettes for the 1979 film)

Los Angeles: Golan-Globus Productions, 1979. Three original draft title card maquettes hand lettered by Harold Adler for the 1979 film. Based on the 1960 novel by Isaac Bashevis Singer. The three sketches show different approaches to the title, all distinct from the final lettering design used. Harold Adler was a calligrapher who created hand lettered titles on over 100 films, worked frequently with Alfred Hitchcock, and was a favorite of legendary title sequence designers Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro. In addition to "The Magician of Lublin" his credits include "Comanche!" (1956), "The Man with the Golden Arm" (1955), "The Seven Year Itch" (1955), "Carmen Jones" (1954), "Psycho" (1960), "The Birds" (1963), "In the Heat of the Night" (1967), and "Finian's Rainbow" (1969). In 2012, an exhibition of Adler's work was organized by noted typographer and design historian Jill Bell at the American Advertising Federation, Kansas City. At the turn of the Twentieth century, a Jewish stage magician and con man, whose career has been ruined by womanizing, gets one more shot at the big time by attempting to pull off a never before seen trick. Two leaves. First leaf: 19 x 18 inches. About Near Fine with creasing to the edges. Two designs, executed in black ink on white paper with a holograph notation to the side in blue pencil. Second leaf: 15.5 x 5.5 inches. Black ink on white paper. Near Fine, with holograph notations in blue pencil.

Dressed to Kill (Original screenplay for the 1980 film, working copy belonging to assistant director William Eustace)

Los Angeles: Filmways Pictures, 1979. Revised script for the 1980 film. Copy belonging to second assistant director William Eustace, with his name in blue holograph ink on the title page, and his copious notations throughout, almost studious in nature. Eustace's notations detail scenes to be omitted, extras to be used, props on the set, even which scenes included stunt doubles. Working scripts used by people on- and off-scene are varied, particularly regarding notations with attention to detail, and this is an example how different those scripts can be. A defining De Palma film, suspenseful in the vein of Alfred Hitchcock and intense sexuality. The film begins with a very famous update on the "Hitchcock shower scene," with Angie Dickinson very plausibly filling Janet Leigh's role. The sixth of nine highly distinctive films De Palma made between 1973 and 1984. Dark green wrappers with the title and a credit for De Palma embossed on the front wrapper. Title page present, dated 10/10/79, noted as REVISED, with credits for screenwriter-director De Palma. 112 leaves, mechanically reproduced, with pink revision pages throughout, dated 10/10/79. Pages Very Good plus, wrapper Very Good bound with two gold brads.

Creepshow (Original screenplay for the 1982 film, signed by George A. Romero)

Burbank: Warner Brothers, 1979. First Draft Script for the 1982 film, "Creepshow," directed by George A. Romero, written for the screen by Stephen King, and starring King, Hal Holbrook, Ed Harris, Ted Danson, Adrienne Barbeau, Leslie Nielsen, and E.G. Marshall. SIGNED by George Romero on the title page: "Stay scared! / George Romero." This an early draft, with the "Laurel Group" address on the title page. The Laurel Group was sold the film rights by Films Around the World at the point when Romero was picked to direct the film. In one of the most successful genre pairings of the 1980s, horror maestros Romero and King came together to write a five-story B-movie anthology that paid tribute to the great E.C. horror comics of the 1950s. The result was a film that belongs in a category with Mario Bava's 1968 "Danger: Diabolik!" and perhaps a few others, wherein the experience of reading a comic book is vibrantly translated to the screen. Another often-ignored fact is this an original screenplay by King, with only two of the five tales in the anthology ("Weeds" and "The Crate") based on short stories previously written by King. Black vinyl studio wrappers, stamped in gilt on the front wrapper. Title page present, with a date of 1979 (3 years prior to the film's release) and a credit for screenwriter King. Tiny holograph ink notation of a first name ("Karen") and a couple of phone numbers at the top of same, indicating that this was probably a working reference copy. 142 leaves, mechanically reproduced, white stock. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with two gold screw brads. In a custom quarter leather clamshell box.

After some investigation, and the discovery of a portrait of the woman in a old hotel, he uses a form of self-hypnosis to find the actress who sat for the painting. Set in New York and Canada, shot on location in Chicago and Michigan. Nominated for an Academy Award, and winner of three awards from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films.         The Postman Always Rings Twice (Two Original screenplays for the 1981 film)

Los Angeles, CA: Columbia Broadcasting System, 1979. Two draft scripts for the 1981 film. One is a Second Draft script, dated December 1979, the other is an Agency script in promotional printed wrappers, undated. Directed by Bob Rafelson, and based on the 1939 novel by James M. Cain, "Postman" was one of the gems of early 1980 cinema (along with "The Verdict") and neo-noir, and brought David Mamet to the attention of the filmmaking world, leading to his working not only as a screenwriter but an important director. Mamet's grim update of Cain's classic hard-boiled novel was somewhat panned on release, but is today held in high regard, and is considered a major influence on the genre. Shot on location in Santa Barbara, California. Script one: Red studio wrappers. Title page present, dated December, 1979, noted as SECOND DRAFT, with credits for screenwriter Mamet and novelist Cain. 123 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 121. Photographically reproduced.         Straight Life: The Story of Art Pepper (Signed First Edition)

New York: Schirmer Books, 1979. First Edition. First Edition. SIGNED by Art Pepper on the front endpaper. An astounding and underappreciated jazz autobiography. In just a few years, Pepper established himself as one of the greatest alto saxophonists of the be-bop era, often thought of as second only to Charlie Parker, and certainly a prime innovator in the West Coast jazz scene. But beginnning in 1954, difficulty with drug use caused Pepper to be incarcerated almost constantly (four separate terms) until 1965. Toward the end of his life he managed to stay clean, and during that time wrote this autobiography with his wife Laurie. The autobiography serves not only as a portrait of a great jazz artist, it is also a great document of not only the jazz world of the mid-century, but also the world of drug users and criminals on the West Coast during that time. Soon after publication of this book, Don McGlynn released the documentary, "Art Pepper: Notes from a Jazz Survivor," which featured extensive interviews with Pepper, his wife, and others. Pepper died only three years after the book was published, in 1982, and signed copies are rare. Fine in a bright, about Near Fine dust jacket, with a touch of wear to the jacket crown.

Where the Buffalo Roam: A Movie Based on the Life of Hunter S. Thompson (Original screenplay for the 1980 film)

Universal City, CA: Universal Pictures, 1979. Draft script for the 1980 film, more than a little loosely based on Hunter S. Thompson's obituary for his closest associate, Oscar Zeta Acosta, a.k.a. Dr. Gonzo, "The Banshee Screams for Buffalo Meat," which appeared in October 1977 issue of "Rolling Stone." An early draft, preceding the film's release by 18 months. A film that, despite being an unholy mess, represents in retrospect an intersection of ideas and talent, as well as the first of many messy attempts to commit to celluloid the basically un-filmable life and work of Hunter S. Thompson. Bill Murray, at this time little more than a droll comedic sensation, arguably made the first step toward becoming the four-dimensional icon he is today, though not necessarily by intention. Both Murray and Thompson had serious concerns about the quality of Kaye's script, and at the beginning of filming both Thompson and Ralph Steadman came onto the set as "executive consultants." Though the author says he did little other than "wander around and fire machine guns," his influence on Murray was profound. The actor became obsessed with his idol, and by all accounts became one with him. During production, Murray and Thompson engaged in a series of dangerous one-upmanship contests, including a Houdini-inspired stunt where Thompson tied Murray to a chair and threw him into a swimming pool. Murray nearly drowned before Thompson pulled him out. The pair's obsession with the film's poor script and continuity led to a hasty final addition of a voice-over narration and two explanatory scenes at the film's end. Three days prior to release, a press screening was canceled because the film was still being edited. When Murray returned to the Saturday Night Live set in the fall of 1980, he was still immersed in character, complete with long black cigarette holder, dark glasses, and nasty habits. One of the show's writers said that Murray "...was not Bill Murray, he was Hunter Thompson. You couldn't talk to him without talking to Hunter Thompson." (Doug Hill and Jeff Weingrad, "Saturday Night Live: A Backstage History," William Morrow, 1989) Red studio wrappers, dated May 23, 1979 on the front wrapper, with the Universal Studios logo as called for. Title page present, with credits for Thompson, screenwriter Kaye, and producer-director Art Linson. 167 leaves, eye-rest green, mechanically reproduced. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with three gold brads.

A Fine first printing of the first edition in alike dust-jacket, minor edgewear. Boldly SIGNED with added drawings by author Tom Wolfe on the title page; Principal practionioner of "The New Journalism," author Tom Wolfe's "The Right Stuff" is a page turner of a book about the pilots engaged in U. Wolfe wrote that his "book grew out of some ordinary curiosity about what makes a man willing to sit up on top of an enormous Roman candleÂ… and wait for someone to light the fuse." In 1980, Wolfe won the National Book Award and in 1983, "The Right Stuff," was adapted into the film of the same name, which starred Scott Glenn and Ed Harris.         L'ART KOTA: LES FIGURES DE RELIQUAIRE

Alain et Francoise Chaffin, Meudon, FRANCE. ND (circa 1979). - 354pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Text in French and English. With a bibliography. This beautiful volume by noted African art scholars Alain and Francoise Chaffin is the first comprehensive stylistic study of the wood and metal reliquary statues of the Kota-associated peoples of Gabon and the Congo. It covers the comparative aesthetic and technical aspects of these sculptures as well as the historical and cultural aspects of their creation. A handsome, lightly used example of this exceedingly uncommon, authoritative reference bearing a few nicks to the foredge of the first few pages, a slight dent at the beginning of the top edge of the textblock, and whose dust jacket shows a diagonal soft crease through the inside front flap along with some light wear and creasing along the top and bottom edges. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         A Time to Heal - 1st Edition/1st Printing

New York: Harper & Row, Publishers. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1979. First Edition; First Printing; Signed by Author. Cloth. 0060112972 . A Fine first printing of the first edition in equally unblemished dust-jacket, signed and dated 3/3/04 by author Gerald Ford directly on the front fly leaf; A Time to Heal is at once the autobiography of a political career and the human story of a dedicated but unassuming man propelled by history into taking on the immense burdens of the Presidency. It is a dramatic, forthright and firsthand account of a decent man's effort to knit together a nation fragmented by Watergate and a White house staff often contentious and badly bruised by the legacy of the Nixon years. There are light moments as well, of family fun, irreverence, pleasure and warmth .

Provenienz: Sammlung Joanneum, Graz, Lugt 2709; Sammlung L. H. Philippi, Hamburg, Lugt 1335. Die Zuschreibung an den kaum bekannten Filippo Pedrini, den Sohn des in Bologna tätigen Malers Domenico Pedrini, gründet sich auf die unlängst von Clerici Bagozzi als Arbeit von Filippo Pedrini erkannte lavierte Federzeichnung „Deckenentwurf mit Bacchus, Ariadne, Diana und Minerva" im Art Institute in Chicago (H. Joachim/ S. Folds McCullagh, „Italian Drawings in the Art Institute of Chicago", Chicago und London, 1979, no. 147, pl. 154) und auf die von Veronika Birke Pedrini zugeschriebene lavierte Federzeichnung „Die Anbetung der Hirten" in der Albertina in Wien (V. Birke7 J Kertész, „Die Italienischen Zeichnungen der Albertina. Generalverzeichnis", 2 Bde., Wien, Köln, Weimar, 1992, Bd. II, Inv. Nr. 1868). Beide Zeichnungen sind bislang jedoch irrtümlich für Arbeiten von Ubaldo Gandolfi gehalten worden, dessen Zeichenstil eine gewisse Verwandschaft mit Filippo Pedrini besitzt. Unsere Bestimmung der Zeichnung wurde von Veronika Birke bestätigt (Brief vom 4. August 1995).
