Translation of a Comparative Vocabulary of the Chinese, Corean, and Japanese Languages: To Which is Added The Thousand Character Classic The Chinese and Corean; The Whole Accompanied by Copious Indexes, of all the Chinese and English Words. Occuring in the Work.

Tokyo: Yushodo. 1979. Printed on Japanese style folded leaves, stab binding presented in a Japanese folding cloth covered case with toggle ties. New introduction booklet with red ribbon ties loosely inserted. A handsome work in excellent condition. This attractive facsimile is said by some authorities to have been adapted by Walter Henry Medhurst under the pseudonym Philo Sinensis. It was first published at the Parapattan Press in Batavia in 1835 [under the supervision of Walter Henry Medhurst]. This adaptation of a Korean classified vocabulary was apparently accomplished without the help of a Korean speaker. The publication from which it was developed was written for Koreans learning Japanese. The adaptation added romanizations of the Japanese and Korean, deduced from Japanese and English lists. (Lust - Western Books on China).Although standard bibliographies such as Lust 'Western Books on China Published up to 1850' state that Philo Sinensis was the pseudonym of Walter Henry Medhurst, ?Philo Sinensis? is usually accepted as the pseudonym used by Carl Gutzlaff at the time and appears in publications such as the Chinese Repository. Its presence is therefore likely to indicate some level of involvement of Carl Gutzlaff. However, most authorities attribute the greater role in the adaptation to Walter Henry Medhurst. Accompanying this copy of the facsimile is a typescript note in English from Nitta Yuji, (founder of Yushodo Booksellers, Tokyo) explaining that he published this facsimile on the occasion of his 70th birthday "in order to share its value to everyone in the scholarly world. It is my hope that this small tribute would be of use." A very fitting contribution to the scholarly world indeed. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 142690).

The Book of Jonah, Vellum Copy; David Jones

London: Clover Hill Editions / Rampant Lions Press, 1979. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. Limited edition of 8 copies (colophon states 10 copies, but the prospectus and Rampant Lions bibliography claim only 8) on vellum of the great reprinting of David Jones's illustrated Book of Jonah. Copy A was kept by the publisher Douglas Cleverdon. This copy, B, went to his friend Major Roger Kinsey of Headcorn Manor in Kent. This set consists of two volumes in a matching green cloth slipcase. Volume one is the vellum edition bound in full green morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, with a wonderful whale motif pressed into the leather cover and set in gold. The volume is fine. The second volume is bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in matching 1/4 morocco over matching dark green cloth. This is a folding case holding 3 sets of the 13 prints, 39 images total. One set is on vellum, one on japon, and one on hand-made paper. Volume two and contents completely fine, as new. The two volumes are, in turn, in a matching green cloth slipcase that has some minor soling (possibly a couple of drops of coffee) on the sides and is a strong VG+, spine looks fine, no bumps, no splits. A beautiful copy. Prospectus (worn) and three letters from Cleverdon laid in. This is a beautiful edition in any format but the vellum is really something special. The presswork for the vellum was done separately from the regular edition, using a more powerful press for a very sharp image, and the vellum is folded over (thus printed on one side only). The effect is dazzling, truly a fine press highspot.

Desert, Marsh and Mountain: The World of a Nomad (Signed First)

The unclipped dustwrapper is Fine: very crisp and clean with tiny rubs to a couple of corners; presented in a removable, archival-quality Brodart protective cover.         Typescript of Share the Seed: A Farmworkers Anthology

1979. An apparently unpublished compilation of the voices of the Farmworkers Movement, edited by Rudge, peace activist and poet (who, in her later years, was the poet laureate of Alameda, CA). Signed by Rudge at the end of her foreword to the volume. Perhaps a hundred voices, providing narratives, poems, songs, "documentary," and photographs (in photocopy). Hundreds of pages, assembled photocopies of varying quality, but with many holograph corrections and emendations, in what appears to be the authors' and the editor's hand. Velobound in brown vinyl covers. Several pages are adhered, possibly due to the use of Whiteout. Several pages missed the binding and are thus laid in. Also laid in is the obituary of one of the contributors, as well as several ephemeral pieces from the Movement: a printed Thanksgiving letter from Cesar Chavez, 1969, commemorating the fifth Thanksgiving of the farm workers' struggle; El Malcriado, "The Voice of the Farm Worker" newsletter for both November and December, 1969; The Picket Line, July 18, 1975; "The Children of Delano invite you to meet with Cesar E. Chavez" [1969] -- a one-page legal-size handbill promoting an event sponsored by the UFWOC [United Farm Workers Organizing Committee] Defense Fund Committee. These last two pieces are sunned and folded, otherwise the ephemeral items are near fine, as is the typescript itself. A unique document of one of the major social justice movements of the 1960s and 70s, which touched on contemporary racial issues and anticipated present day issues of immigration, citizenship, and undocumented workers. Here the voices of the people themselves prevail, rather than those of analysts or policy makers. First Edition. No Binding.

Soong May-ling, (or May-ling Soong Chiang) also known as Madame Chiang Kai-Shek was a remarkable and important figure in the history of the Republic of China. With her first class education in the USA, and with her resultant excellent English she played an important role in political discussions. She was a politician and involved in charitable causes, as well as an accomplished painter in the traditional Chinese style, and after the death of her husband in 1975, moved from Taiwan back to the USA. Around 1988 to 1990 she did return to Taiwan and tried and become involved in politics again, but this time was unsuccessful, and returned to the USA. She was a beautiful and formidable lady, and has even been nicknamed The Last Empress. More photos on request.         A Bestiary

(Watertown, MA): Bromer, Anne & David, 1979. Claes, Brother Edgard. 19ff. From an edition of 125 copies signed by the artist, Sarah Chamberlain. With fifteen wood engravings of exotic animals, including the panda, koala, Siberian tiger, and platypus by Sarah Chamberlain. Together with the extra suite of prints, all signed and numbered. This copy features an innovative, three-dimensional designer binding by Brother Edgard Claes, signed. Claes's concept for the binding was that all animals are slightly futuristic, with their long necks, beaks, scales, spines, and such. Insects especially reminded him of spacecraft, and Claes ran with that idea when designing the binding for this bestiary. Originating from model spaceships that Claes had customized, two mounted reliefs rise from the covers, with straight horizontal girders arching across their surface. Panels of geometric shapes are painted with blue, purple, red, and orange automotive paint. Large circular agates, one blue on the upper cover and two black on the back, bore their way through the hulls of the ships and provide a sharp focus point. The binding is accented with a purple snakeskin spine and bright yellow endpapers. The accompanying suite of illustrations is held in a four-flap enclosure constructed of purple- and black-striped polycarbonate with yellow and orange geometric designs tumbling across each flap. Housed in a polycarbonate box, with the book and suite each in their own compartment, protected by sliding covers. The box follows the same geometric theme as the binding, with yellow and red geometric designs against a dark background. The title "A Bestiary 1979" wraps around all four sides of the box in a tall, narrow sans-serif font, completing the look. In a charcoal, soft microfiber case. A renowned designer binder famed for his creative use of innovative materials, Brother Claes is a member of the Belgian Order of the Holy Cross. Claes studied with master binders Ren de Cock and August Kulche at the Rijksinstitut in Malines, where he was later appointed professor. His original intent was to do restoration work in the monastery library, but his creativity and zeal led him to the use of innovative materials and cutting-edge abstract designs that emphasize the structure of the book. Extremely fine. (Book measures 2 1/4 by 2 inches [57x51mm]; box measures 2 1/2 by 2 1/4 by 1 5/16 inches [65x57x34mm]).

West Bank, About 120 BC-70 AC . *** Illustrations: . *** Names related to the work: , . *** Facsimile Edition: 3 rolls volumes: Exact reproduction of the original document (extent, color and size) *** Limitation: 400 copies copies. New York: Johnson Reprint Corporation, 1979. 1/400. Quarto. 93pp (text), 108pp (photographic reproductions). Original linen covered box with title in Hebrew and English on metal plate fixed on top lid. Striking burgundy silk on inside of the box. Casket containing an earthenware jar, 3 facsimile scrolls placed inside the jar (just the way the original Dead Sea Scrolls were found), and a soft leather bound book telling the amazing story of the Dead Sea Scrolls and their discovery. Found inadvertently in 1947, the Dead Sea Scrolls are regarded by many as the most important archaeological find of the twentieth century. Mystery and intrigue surrounded their acquisition and there are many accounts of their subsequent ?wanderings? as they continued to change hands after their discovery. The three facsimile scrolls represent some of the largest and most important Dead Sea Scrolls: The Great Isaiah Scroll, the Rule of the Community, and the Habakkuk Commentary. - 1) The Isaiah Scroll is the only complete biblical book surviving among the Dead Sea Scrolls. Found in Cave One at Qumran in 1947, it dates from about 120 BCE. The text of the scroll hardly differs from the version used today and demonstrates the degree to which the text of the Bible was faithfully transmitted over the centuries. The Isaiah scroll is approximately seven metres long and is made up of 17 parchment sheets, sewn end to end. - 2) Also discovered in Cave One at Qumran, this scroll fragment is known variously as the Rule of the Community and the Manual of Discipline, and was in two pieces when it was brought by the Bedouin who discovered it to Bethlehem in 1947. The text embodies the rules of conduct for the Qumranites themselves, rules which are additional to the 613 commandments found in the Pentateuch (Torah). These rules of conduct regulated interpersonal relationships and matters of personal piety in a Jewish community which had apparently separated itself both geographically and ideologically from the more mainstream practice of Judaism in Jerusalem. - 3) The Habakkuk Commentary, also discovered in Qumran Cave One, is part of a group of literature found in several caves at Qumran, which have come to be known by the Hebrew word pesharim, ?commentaries.? These explanations often interpret the biblical text with reference to events in the writer?s own time, the recent past, or the near future. Other such commentaries found at Qumran explain in this way the biblical books of Isaiah, Micah, Zephaniah, Psalms, Hosea, and Nahum. The text of the scroll hardly differs from the version used today and demonstrates the degree to which the text of the Bible was faithfully transmitted over the centuries. The transcription was made from the excellent photographs which form the basis of this edition, from the earlier photographs published by M. Burrows, and from the original Scroll themselves. Studies dealing with the textual and paleographic aspects of the Scrolls were also used. Each scroll is rolled and protected by a piece of linen cloth. Size of the earthenware jar: 17" tall, 8" width. The soft leather bound book is gilt-lettered on spine and covers, contains 93 pages of text and 108 pages featuring color photographic reproductions of the three scrolls, along with their transcriptions.
