Gaia: A New Look At Life on Earth.

Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1979. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Signed and dated by James Lovelock on the title page. Laid in is a ticket to the lecture given by the author. Fine in a fine price-clipped dust jacket. The Gaia Hypothesis was first formulated during the 1960s as a result of Lovelock?swork for NASA concerned with detecting life on Mars, the hypothesis proposes that living and non-living parts of the Earth form a complex interacting system that can be thought of as a single organism. Named after the Greek goddess Gaia at the suggestion of novelist William Golding, the hypothesis postulates that the biosphere has a regulatory effect on the Earth's environment that acts to sustain life. Written for the non-scientist, Gaia is a journey through time and space in search of evidence with which to support a new and radically different model of our planet. In contrast to conventional belief that living matter is passive in the face of threats to its existence, the book explores the hypothesis that the earth's living matter-air, ocean, and land surfaces-forms a complex system that has the capacity to keep the Earth a fit place for life. "This may turn out to be one of the epochal insights of the 20th century"(CoEvolution Quarterly).

        Mother Goose and Nursery Rhymes

1979. One of Twenty Specially Bound CopiesSigned by Philip Reed and With a Signed Original Wood Engraving from His Original EditionREED, Philip, designer and illustrator. Mother Goose and Nursery Rhymes. Wood Engravings by Philip Reed. South Bend, Indiana: Regnery/Gateway, Inc., 1979. Deluxe 'Limited Leather Edition'. One of twenty specially bound copies (this one being #9) signed by Philip Reed. Together with a colored 'proof' wood engraving from the original edition of 1963, of Simple Simon and the Pieman (sheet size 11 x 8 1/2 inches; 279 x 215 mm.) signed by Philip Reed, loosely laid-in.Small folio (10 11/16 x 7 5/8 inches; 271 x 194 mm.). [2, blank], [vi], 57, [3, blank] pp. Seventy wonderful colored wood engravings (on fifty-five pages). Bound by Monastery Hill-Chicago, stamp-signed in gilt on rear turn-in. Full black morocco, covers ruled in gilt, upper cover pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt, spine with two raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt, cream watered silk liners and end-leaves, all edges gilt. Housed in the original matching black leatherette slipcase. A very fine copy. The generic title 'Mother Goose' suggests a few nursery rhyme gems tucked away within. Short stories with thinly veiled morals and violent themes. In just the first few pages: children are whipped soundly and sent to bed, an old man is thrown down the stairs, a pussy cat is drowned, a mouse is bitten in two, a pig is shot with an arrow and children are asked to remember the Fifth of November.Gunpowder treason and plot;I see no reasonWhy gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot.Guy Fawkes included, this is a great selection of rhymes. Sometimes collections like this include so many ditties that the book ends up being an encyclopedia that you never want to pick up because of the sheer volume. However, this is a sensible collection, not too long and not too short with enough old favorites and undiscovered treats to keep everyone happy. Philip Reed's colored wood engravings show our much-loved characters with cherub, pinched faces and the animals full of personality."Philip Reed (1908-1989) spent his youth in Park Ridge, Illinois and later studied graphic design at the Art Institute of Chicago. At the Art Institute he studied the works of such illustrators as Howard Pyle and Randolph Caldecott who would later influence his own work. In 1930, he established his first printing company, the Broadside Press, and over the next decades Philip Reed gained a reputation using "fine quality work". Most of "his work has been engraved" and Philip Reed worked using "a great deal of color". Philip Reed designed and illustrated many books for children and critics praised his "detailed color wood prints." In 1958, he illustrated a new edition of James Thurber's classic Many Moons and in 1963 published Mother Goose and Nursery Rhymes which received many awards and honors. His work has been displayed at the Library of Congress in Washington, the Victoria and Albert Museums in London and other institutions. Mother Goose and Nursery Rhymes was the Caldecott Honor winner in 1964.

        Aylesbury Friars 1979-1984

Self Published ca 1979-1984, Aylesbury - Comprising 18 x flyers (20.5 x 33 cm) mimeographed on mixed paperstocks with Friars editorial and newsletter printed to verso, 5 x flyers (towards the end of the period) are Litho printed on white stock, 1 x Friars 10 years foldout listing every gig from 1969-1979, 2 x membership cards- one c.a. 1971, and the other 1979, and finally, flyer for Paul Weller Friars tribute in 2010. More images available on request. Friars- due to it's proximity to London rose to prominence as one of the key venues in th UK in the seventies and eighties, The Pretty Things in 69, to Bowie in 72 (his only UK gig that year), to Roxy Music, Genesis, Queen, Cockney Rebel, Motorhead, Fairport Convenion and so on, until the punk and new wave explosion of the late 70s where Friars hosted everybody from The Clash to The Ramones, Blondie, Gang of Four, The Buzzcocks, The Adverts, Sham, The Cramps, Ian Dury, Siouxie, The Slits and many more. Looking back at their listings it's a who's who of alternative music, which is due to the tastes and talents of husband and wife team David and Budget Stopps, who assisted by a team of enthusiasts ran everything Friars related from a spare room in their house. The very distinct flyers and posters were designed by Bridget Stopps, continuing the work of Kris Needs who it seems wrote the texts on the back (he was also editor of Zig Zag). Budget cut the stencils at home, with David making the screens for the posters and the flyers were printed on an old mimeograph machine which they inherited from the local newspaper in the mid seventies. The texts to the rear really give a feel to the late 70s music scene. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

New York: Delacorte Press, 1979. First edition. Octavo, original black cloth. Signed by Kurt Vonnegut with self-portrait caricature on title page. Light rubbing and wear, some light speckling to the bottom edge, near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jailbird takes us into a fractured and comic, pure Vonnegut world of high crimes and misdemeanors in government and in the heart. This wry tale follows bumbling bureaucrat Walter F. Starbuck from Harvard to the Nixon White House to the penitentiary as Watergate's least known co-conspirator. But the humor turns dark when Vonnegut shines his spotlight on the cold hearts and calculated greed of the mighty, giving a razor-sharp edge to an unforgettable portait of power and politics in our times. "A gem. . . a mature, imaginative novel-possibly the best he has written. . . Jailbird is a guided tour de force of America. Take it" (Playboy).

Ingmar Bergman, Faro, Sweden 1979 - FANNY AND ALEXANDER - A FILM FOR TELEVISION, by INGMAR BERGMAN. Translated (into English) by Alan Blair. ORIGINAL DRAFT SCREENPLAY for what BERGMAN INTENDED TO BE a FIVE HOUR, FOUR PART FILM for TELEVISION. The Draft is dated Faro (Sweden), 1979. Plastic Spiral Bound Screenplay, green paper and clear plastic covers, 8.25x11.75 inches, mimeographed or photocopied typescript, 235 pages plus 3 prelim pages (Title Page, Characters), pages printed on one side only. VERY GOOD condition, light toning and soiling to the page edges, overall tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A very nice copy. The full breadth and beauty of Ingmar Bergman's incredible film is only fully realized in the format he originally intended, the four part, five hour television film. This 1979 screenplay draft was the embodiment of that vision. However, Bergman was convinced to make a drastically cut version (3 hours versus 5 hours) for limited release in Europe in late 1982 so that the film would qualify for the Academy Awards. After the spliced and diced film finished its very limited European release, and after it won 4 academy awards (it was nominated for six), a 5 hour theatrical film was given limited European theatrical release. That five hour film was basically a spliced together version of the intended four part, five hour television film. Finally, also in 1983, the full four part, five hour television film was shown in Sweden (Fanny och Alexander) in the form Bergman originally intended. I do not believe that Bergman's preferred 5 hour version was ever filmed in English. His original intent was clearly to have the four part, five hour telefilm made and shown on television in both Sweden and the United States. Thus this 1979 English translated draft screenplay. But instead only the drastically shortened film version was ever released theatrically in the United States. That film was released in 1983, four years after this 1979 screenplay for television was looking for U.S. producers. This Original 1979 Draft Screenplay for the Full Four Part, Five Hour Television Film was sent to Super Agent Paul Kohner (long time agent for Ingmar Bergman and for many of Bergman's film stars). Paul Kohner's ownership label is on the title page, with his early phone number CRESTVIEW 1-5165. SCARCE. This 1979 INGMAR BERGMAN written SCREENPLAY for his original vision of a Five Hour, Four Part FILM for TELEVISION, is the only copy I have, and it is the only copy I have ever seen.         The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories.

8vo., original cloth with dust wrapper. A near fine copy. First edition, signed by the author. Angela Carter was an English novelist, short story writer and journalist, known for her feminist, magical realism, and picaresque works. In 2008, The Times ranked Carter tenth in their list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945". All of the stories share a common theme of being closely based upon fairytales or folk tales. Angela Carter has stated: "My intention was not to do 'versions' or, as the American edition of the book said, horribly, 'adult' fairy tales, but to extract the latent content from the traditional stories." The anthology contains ten stories: "The Bloody Chamber", "The Courtship of Mr Lyon", "The Tiger's Bride", "Puss-in-Boots", "The Erl-King", "The Snow Child", "The Lady of the House of Love", "The Werewolf", "The Company of Wolves" and "Wolf-Alice".

Translation of a Comparative Vocabulary of the Chinese, Corean, and Japanese Languages: To Which is Added The Thousand Character Classic The Chinese and Corean; The Whole Accompanied by Copious Indexes, of all the Chinese and English Words. Occuring in the Work.

Tokyo: Yushodo. 1979. Printed on Japanese style folded leaves, stab binding presented in a Japanese folding cloth covered case with toggle ties. New introduction booklet with red ribbon ties loosely inserted. A handsome work in excellent condition. This attractive facsimile is said by some authorities to have been adapted by Walter Henry Medhurst under the pseudonym Philo Sinensis. It was first published at the Parapattan Press in Batavia in 1835 [under the supervision of Walter Henry Medhurst]. This adaptation of a Korean classified vocabulary was apparently accomplished without the help of a Korean speaker. The publication from which it was developed was written for Koreans learning Japanese. The adaptation added romanizations of the Japanese and Korean, deduced from Japanese and English lists. (Lust - Western Books on China).Although standard bibliographies such as Lust 'Western Books on China Published up to 1850' state that Philo Sinensis was the pseudonym of Walter Henry Medhurst, ?Philo Sinensis? is usually accepted as the pseudonym used by Carl Gutzlaff at the time and appears in publications such as the Chinese Repository. Its presence is therefore likely to indicate some level of involvement of Carl Gutzlaff. However, most authorities attribute the greater role in the adaptation to Walter Henry Medhurst. Accompanying this copy of the facsimile is a typescript note in English from Nitta Yuji, (founder of Yushodo Booksellers, Tokyo) explaining that he published this facsimile on the occasion of his 70th birthday "in order to share its value to everyone in the scholarly world. It is my hope that this small tribute would be of use." A very fitting contribution to the scholarly world indeed. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 142690).
