Where the Buffalo Roam: A Movie Based on the Life of Hunter S. Thompson (Original screenplay for the 1980 film)

Universal Pictures, Universal City, CA 1979 - Draft script for the 1980 film, more than a little loosely based on Hunter S. Thompson's obituary for his closest associate, Oscar Zeta Acosta, a.k.a. Dr. Gonzo, "The Banshee Screams for Buffalo Meat," which appeared in October 1977 issue of "Rolling Stone." An early draft, preceding the film's release by 18 months. A film that, despite being an unholy mess, represents in retrospect an intersection of ideas and talent, as well as the first of many messy attempts to commit to celluloid the basically un-filmable life and work of Hunter S. Thompson. Bill Murray, at this time little more than a droll comedic sensation, arguably made the first step toward becoming the four-dimensional icon he is today, though not necessarily by intention. Both Murray and Thompson had serious concerns about the quality of Kaye's script, and at the beginning of filming both Thompson and Ralph Steadman came onto the set as "executive consultants." Though the author says he did little other than "wander around and fire machine guns," his influence on Murray was profound. The actor became obsessed with his idol, and by all accounts became one with him. During production, Murray and Thompson engaged in a series of dangerous one-upmanship contests, including a Houdini-inspired stunt where Thompson tied Murray to a chair and threw him into a swimming pool. Murray nearly drowned before Thompson pulled him out. The pair's obsession with the film's poor script and continuity led to a hasty final addition of a voice-over narration and two explanatory scenes at the film's end. Three days prior to release, a press screening was canceled because the film was still being edited. When Murray returned to the Saturday Night Live set in the fall of 1980, he was still immersed in character, complete with long black cigarette holder, dark glasses, and nasty habits. One of the show's writers said that Murray ".was not Bill Murray, he was Hunter Thompson. You couldn't talk to him without talking to Hunter Thompson." (Doug Hill and Jeff Weingrad, "Saturday Night Live: A Backstage History," William Morrow, 1989)Red titled wrappers, dated May 23, 1979 on the front wrapper, with the Universal Studios logo as called for. Title page present, with credits for Thompson, screenwriter Kaye, and producer-director Art Linson. 167 leaves, eye-rest green, mechanically reproduced. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with three gold brads. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        James Bond and Moonraker

London: Jonathan Cape. 1979. FIRST EDITION, pp.221. Novelisation of the film 'Moonraker'. Publisher's cloth with pictorial dust-wrapper by Bill Botten. Minor shelfwear, jacket a trifle rubbed at crown, no inscriptions or price-clipping; near fine. This was written under licence from Ian Fleming's copyright holders Glidrose Publications- when Fleming sold the film rights to his novels he would not consent to this and 'The Spy Who Loved Me' being filmed as written; he felt 'The Spy Who Loved Me' was an experimental novel (with female perspective and narrative), and 'Moonraker' was somewhat dated; therefore both would need re-writing and Christopher Wood was brought in by director Lewis Gilbert to produce a screenplay and subsequent novel for the two titles.

        Moby Dick; or, the Whale

San Francisco: Arion Press, 1979. Moser, Barry. Folio. xvi, 577pp. One of an edition of 265 copies. Hand-set in Goudy Modern, with initial letters, printed in blue at the start of each of 135 chapters, in Leviathan Capitals, a special alphabet designed for the purpose. Printed on Barcham Green's hand-made paper, which has a bluish cast and is unusually soft to the hand. Barry Moser's carefully researched wood-engravings were intended to provide "informative depictions of subjects mentioned by Melville: places, creatures, objects or tools, and processes used in the whaling industry," thus leaving "the Pequod, Ahab, and Moby-Dick described only by Melville's words." The book went into production more than ten years after Robert Grabhorn and Andrew Hoyem began planning it, and more than five years after the first experimental pages were printed. Bound in full-blue morocco with silver titling on the spine. Housed in a blue linen slipcase, which is remarkably unfaded. Scratch to rear cover, else a fine copy.

As of January 2014, WorldCat locates five partial runs and only one complete run in North American libraries. Advertised as "The Alternative Magazine That's Not for Everyone," Damage connected San Francisco punk rock and performance art to the global underground, paying equal attention to local happenings and developments in London, Tokyo, Paris and elsewhere. The magazine and its editorial staff were closely associated with the legendary Western Front festivals of 1979 and 1980, and extensively promoted the San Francisco mayoral candidacy of Dead Kennedys lead singer Jello Biafra. A very fine copy of an ephemeral publication.

        Exotic Birds (Original artwork)

N.p., N.p. 1979 - Original arwork depicting exotic birds in a glorious psychedelic landscape, also known as Don Van Vliet's mind. Signed "Van Vliet / 79." From the collection of Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas, for whom the painting was made.It was around this time that Van Vliet famously began to contribute artwork to the covers of two of his finest recordings, "Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)" (1978) and "Doc at the Radar Station" (1980). Gary Lucas was the principal guitar player, along with Jeff Moris Tepper, in Beefheart's final configuration of the Magic Band, appearing prominently on Beefheart's last two recordings, the aforementioned "Doc at the Radar Station" (1980) and "Ice Cream for Crow" (1982). Lucas' solo guitar performances of "Flavor Bud Living" and "Evening Bell" on the respective recordings are singular in Beefheart's ouevre. Lucas managed and performed with Beefheart for five years, until Van Vliet retired to Trinidad, California to be a full-time painter in the mid-1980s. During their association, well before he gained notoriety as a painter, Beefheart spontaneously created drawings for Lucas, typically using colored markers, and typically reflecting the situation where the drawing was being made, either literally or on some abstract level. 10.5 x 13.75 inches. Red, orange, and black marker on drawing paper. Archivally framed and matted. Fine.Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Lucas. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
