The History of United States Coinage As Illustrated by the Garrett Collection (SIGNED) . . . AND the four volumes cataloguing the Garrett Collection Sale for the John Hopkins University, November 1979 through March 1981, all with prices realized

Bowers & Ruddy Galleries, Inc., Los Angeles, Calif. 1979 - The main, summary volume is dated to the ochre FFE Oct. 24, 1979, inscribed to David E. Kelby, and signed by the author Q. David Bowers. Additionally, Mr. Kelby's name is stamped in gilt to bottom of front board. Also included in this lot are the matching four quarto volumes cataloging the four-part sale, held (respectively) by Bowers & Ruddy Galleries in November, 1979; March, 1980; October 1980, and March 1981. All five volumes are matching in size and in their dark brown faux leather bindings with bright gold gilt titles. The signed volume and the first catalog volume, though without major flaws, will close their text blocks but not their boards and we grade "very good." The remaining three catalog volumes WILL close their boards and we grade "fine," though the top outside corners of the second catalog volume have been banged. A handsome set, each volume illustrated with numerous B&W photographs and also with color plates of the coins. T. Harrison Garrett, whose family managed the Baltimore & Ohio railroad, began collecting coins while a student at Princeton in the mid-1860s. By 1880 Garrett aspired to own one of each variety in the major United States series. He acquired the finest known 1802 half dime from Harold P. Newlin, who wrote the first reference work on the series. He obtained a rare 1804 silver dollar. He acquired intact from the authors of the standard works on those series their collections of Hard Times tokens and of New Jersey coppers. By the time of his death in 1888 Garrett had formed one of the finest rare coin collections ever assembled. His sons then took up the pursuit, acquiring patterns and elusive gold issues. The signed volume is of 572 pp. including index. Lot 607 in the first sale, the finest known Brasher Doubloon, netted $725,000. The second sale was of larger coins, with lot 897, Augustus Humbert's personal specimen of the famous proof 1851 $50 octagonal gold, bringing $500,000. The third sale included colonial and state coins, though it was the superb uncirculated 1795 eagle which brought $120,000, while the fourth sale featured token, medals, ingots, Confederate issues, and the like. This lot of five volumes weighs 14 to 15 lbs. (6.5 kilos.) Domestic media-mail shipping will cost $9.00 (twice our usual charge.) Priority domestic U.S. shipping is likely to cost $30; overseas shipping will cost about $90. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Against the Current.

London: The Hogarth Press,, 1979. Essays in the history of ideas. Edited and with a bibliography by Henry Hardy. With an introduction by Roger Hausheer. Octavo. Original blue boards, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Loss to fore margin of pp. 187?8 affecting a few words on p. 188. A very good copy in a bright jacket. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy from the author to Sir Edward Playfair, with Berlin's compliments slip pasted onto the front pastedown, inscribed by him, "Eddie, don't dream of reading it [indecipherable] before it is remaindered, Isaiah." Edward Wilder Playfair (1909?1999) was a civil servant with a reputation for being unconventional, once described as a "scholar manqué who liked dons, books and clever people such as himself" (Lord Annan, ODNB). His highest appointment in office was as Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Defence in 1960?1, however this was a bad experience for Playfair as he did not get on with the Defence minister, Harold Watkinson, and Playfair ended leaving the public service for a career in industry. Berlin mentioned Eddie Playfair "whom I know" in a letter addressed to antirationalist philosopher Stuart Hampshire dated 6 June 1945.

New York: s.n. (self-published by Larry Clark), 1979. First Cloth Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Large quarto. Original cloth with pictorial dustjacket, preserved in a mylar sleeve and housed in a fitted black cloth case. The work is dated 1971 but was actually reissued in cloth in 1979, as here. Signed copy of the first cloth edition, issued by Larry Clark himself in 1979. When it first appeared in 1971, Larry Clark's groundbreaking book "Tulsa" sparked immediate controversy across the nation. Its graphic depictions of sex, violence, and drug abuse in the youth culture of Oklahoma were acclaimed by critics for stripping bare the myth that Middle America had been immune to the social convulsions that rocked America in the 1960s. The raw, haunting images taken in 1963, 1968, and 1971 document a youth culture progressively overwhelmed by self-destruction -- and are as moving and disturbing today as when they first appeared. The harrowing author's statement, is unflinching, unapologetic, and brutally honest, and described succinctly the photographs herein: "I was born in tulsa oklahoma in 1943. when i was sixteen i started shooting amphetamine. i shot with my friends everyday for three years and then left town but i've gone back through the years. once the needle goes in it never comes out." Reference: The Photobook, p. 206 ("One of the most talked about and important books of the decade").

The Plan Of St. Gall: A Study Of The Architecture & The Economy Of, & Life In A Paradigmatic Carolingian Monastery

University of California Press, Berkeley 1979 - Massive and exquisite production from the University of California Press. Three volumes plus the original prospectus still in the envelope. This set is as new. It remains in its original shipping box. Bound in light tan cloth with red leather spine labels, lettered in gilt. Issued without dust jacket. This monumental effort was accomplished based entirely on the existence of a 9th century drawing of a Benedictine compound - a small walled city if you will - containing church, infirmary, houses, stables. It looks to my eye like an much expanded plan for what became eventually the original Colleges of Oxford or Cambridge. From five parchment sheets sewed together, this plan has survived and remains a topic of intense scholarly dispute. It is believed that the late and much missed Umberto Eco referenced St. Gall in his "The Name Of The Rose." The structure was never built and thus we are left with the faded red ink drawing of the ideal Medieval Monastic complex. These volumes are acknowledged as the finest study in English to date. This is as fine a set as one could hope to find. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Postman Always Rings Twice (Two original screenplays for the 1981 film)

Columbia Broadcasting System, Los Angeles, CA 1979 - Two draft scripts for the 1981 film. One is a Second Draft script, dated December 1979, the other is an Agency script in promotional titled wrappers, undated. Directed by Bob Rafelson, and based on the 1939 novel by James M. Cain, "Postman" was one of the gems of early 1980 cinema (along with "The Verdict") and neo-noir, and brought David Mamet to the attention of the filmmaking world, leading to his working not only as a screenwriter but an important director. Mamet's grim update of Cain's classic hard-boiled novel was somewhat panned on release, but is today held in high regard, and is considered a major influence on the genre. Shot on location in Santa Barbara, California.Script one:Red titled wrappers.
