Evidence for Anomalous Lepton Production in e+ e- Annihilation" in Physical Review Letters, Vol. 35, No. 22, 1 December 1975, pp. 1489-1492

American Physical Society, Rome 1975 - FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF THE DISCOVERY OF A NEW ELEMENTARY PARTICLE, THE TAU LEPTON (also known as the tau particle, or tauon). In 1995, the American physicist Martin Perl was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for this discovery. "In 1947, when a particle discovered earlier in cosmic rays - the muon - was identified to be identical to an electron but about 200 times heavier, Perl's research supervisor, Rabi, had famously exclaimed: "Who ordered that?" Perl became fascinated by this enigmatic particle, and so began his lifelong quest to answer Rabi's question. In particular, he wondered if there is just one muon, or whether there could be still heavier examples. He believed that if he could find a yet heavier form of the electron, it might help to resolve the muon's role in nature" (The Guardian, Obituary, 2014). What Perl discovered was the tau, an elementary particle similar to the electron, but is 3,500 times heavier than the electron and survives less than a trillionth of a second (whereas the electron is stable) and carries a negative electric charge and a spin of .5. "Together with the electron, the muon, and the three neutrinos, it is a lepton. Like all elementary particles with half-integral spin, the tau has a corresponding antiparticle of opposite charge but equal mass and spin, which in the tau's case is the antitau" (Wikipedia). Perl would later write that "the discovery of the tau lepton and the third generation of fermions came from the convergence of three physics streams in the late 1960's and early 1970's. These streams were: the failed attempts by myself and others to understand the connection between the electron and the muon, the development of electron-positron storage rings, and the development of the theory of sequential leptons" (Perl, The Discovery of the Tau Lepton, SLAC, September 1992). CONDITION & DETAILS: First edition in original wraps housed in a modern leather covered clamshell case, gilt-lettered at the spine. Rome, N. Y.: The American Physical Society. Quarto (10.25 x 7.50 inches; 256 x 188mm). Finely rebacked. The rear wrapper has a shipping label and there are very light stamps on the head and foot of the text block. No other markings. Slightly bowed front board with some edgewear else near fine with fine photographs.A photo album kept by a woman who was involved in the Merrimack Valley Cake Club in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The album opens with a photo of an impressive sculpture of the Mayo Brothers, the founders of the Mayo clinic. The collection is a combination of traditional cakes such as a beautiful tiered wedding cake, seen here, to scenes made in icing and cake including one of a man driving a horse drawn carriage. Many of the cakes show craftsmanship and delicate decorations which were clearly worked on with care. One cake shows a Civil War scene with iced figures of Southern belles, a soldier, and Abe Lincoln, while another is a full cake rendition of the Last Supper.A delicious collection of photographs detailing a community's baking artists. .

        Traktat über kritische Vernunft. [Widmungsexemplar].

Tübingen, J.C.B.Mohr, 1975. 8°. XVI, 219 Seiten. Softcover. 3., erweiterte Auflage. Originale Broschur. Sehr guter Zustand. Mit der gedruckten Widmung an Karl Popper. Mit handschriftlicher Widmung und Signatur von Hans Albert an Oswald Schwemmer. / Inscribed by the german philosopher Hans Albert to fellow philosopher Oswald Schwemmer in 1975. Inscribed books by Albert are very uncommon. Hans Albert (born February 8, 1921) is a German philosopher. Born in Cologne, he lives in Heidelberg.nHis fields of research are Social Sciences and General Studies of Methods. He is a critical rationalist, giving special attention to rational heuristics. He is a strong critic of the continental hermeneutic tradition coming from Heidegger and Gadamer.nnAlbert held the chair of 'Social Sciences and General Studies of Methods' at the University of Mannheim. He is also a much-cited philosopher. Most importantly, he gave Popper's critical rationalism a concise, broad-ranging formulation, even as a way of life.nnAlbert's plea is for critical rationalism. He avoids solemn preaching in favor of serious, serene discussion with people of different faith and thinking. While Popper always warned not to follow one's opponent into the mire, Albert follows them into their favored field of thinking on their own terms. So he criticized Heidegger's "being in the abyss" ("Sein im Ab-Grund"), Gadamer's "horizons melting together", Habermas's "consensual theoretical truth in the ideal discourse", Karl-Otto Apel's transcendental arguments, the theologian Hans Küng's "absolute-relative, this-life-and-hereafter, transcendental-immanent, allconcerning-allcontrolling most real reality in the very heart of things".nnSince 1958 he has been participating the Alpbacher Hochschulwochen (a famous summer conference in the beautiful Austrian alpine village of Alpbach). It was there he made the acquaintance of Karl Popper after having studied Popper's philosophy and having mostly accepted it long ago. After 1955 he had exciting discussions with Paul Feyerabend, who in those times was a critical rationalist and an admirer of Karl Popper. Their letters later were published. (Wikipedia)

This croquis was made from a xerograph of an original drawing, which was then hand-colored with ink, watercolor, and gouache. The design shows a long yellow dress with a matching cape and a deep neckline. Five swatches of the appropriate fabrics--green, yellow, red, blue, and lime muslin, are stapled to the sheet. These sketches were produced in a limited quantity and presented to potential clients in attendance at the Paris Couture shows held by Dior in the spring and fall of each year. This example is in good condition and makes a wonderful document for any lover of fashion.
