As No Storm or The Any Port Party

[Berkeley, CA]: Rebis Press, 1975. First Edition. Near fine. Johanna Drucker. An exceptionally bright, clean copy. From the collection of master printer Ruth Lingen.Of this early book, Drucker noted that the nautical motif in images and binding combine with the stippled ink drawings to produce an effect that suggests a children's book, at first glance. The text is dense, rhymed, complex, almost unreadable in any straightforward sense. Thick with double entendres, allusions, puns, it is the story of a failed New Year's party I attended with my parents in what must have been the winter 1974-75. [Publisher] Betsy Davids had applied for and received funds from the NEA for a series of book projects, and she had invited me to be one of the artists It remains one of the best produced of my works, particularly in that early period, thanks to Betsy's expertise, patience, and experience. The book is somewhat baffling, impenetrable, an opaque textual object. The writing is shifted into a more fantastic register by the images than it might have been on its own, but unrelieved, the text would have been unreadable. Still, it was quite typical of the writing I did at the time, heavily knotted and turned inward on itself, but tightly structured, highly rhythmical, intricate The title translates as A Snow Storm, followed by a twist on Any Port in a Storm, combined with the word Party, indicating the event on which the text was based.Druckers 14 full-page, pen-and-ink stippled illustrations were etched onto zinc plates for printing. Drucker has stated that the book, with its canvas cover, was meant to look as if it was made from pieces of a sailboat.Outermost strand of canvas along the lower edge of the rear cover working loose. Letterpress printed on dampened Rives paper. Flexible canvas covers grommeted and laced with rope. One of 326 copies, 26 of which are signed and lettered. 30 pp; 25cm x 21.5cm.

*Signed* The Secret Teachings of All Ages: An Encyclopedic Outline of Masonic, Hermetic, Qabbalistic and Rosicrucian Symbolical Philosophy Being an Interpretation of the Secret Teachings Concealed Within the Rituals, Allegories and Mysteries of All Ages

Philosophical Research Society; Limited edition (1975), 1975-01-01. Twentieth Edition. Hardcover. Very Good (7 of 10) . Signed by Author. Large Hardcover bound book, black boards, red & gold embossed title on cover. This copy is *AUTOGRAPHED/SIGNED* by Manly P. Hall on the front fly, inscribed to "Maureen with best wishes". Very Good (7 of 10) light shelf wear, mildly shaken. Heavily illustrated in b&w. Twentieth Edition - Reduced facsimile of the first edition. [After the publication of 'The secret Teachings of All Ages' Manly P. Hall went from being just another earnest young preacher in the City of Angels to becoming an icon of the increasingly influential metaphysical movement sweeping the country in the 1920s. His book challenged assumptions about society's spiritual roots and made people look at them in new ways. a gorgeous, dreamlike book of mysterious symbols, concise essays and colorful renderings of mythical beasts rising out of the sea, and angelic beings with lions' heads presiding over somber initiation rites in torch-lit temples of ancestral civilizations that had mastered latent powers beyond the reach of modern man. The greatest knowledge of all time should be available to the twentieth century not only in the one shilling editions of the Bohn Library in small type and shabby binding, but in a book that would be a monument, not merely a coffin.]. * * * * * * * * * * {FREE Media Mail Shipping!         Apophthegmatum libri octo cum primis frugiferi, denuò vigilanter ab ipos recogniti autore, non sine lucro novae accessionis.Cologne, Johann Gymnich I, 1538. 8vo (16 x 11 x 4.5 cm). With Gymnich's woodcut device, 9 woodcut initials (2 series) plus 1 repeat, and a vine-leaf ornament. Set in an Aldine-style italic with incidental roman and Greek. Near contemporary blind-tooled calf (the owner's stamp ca. 1564?, added later than the rest of the tooling) over wooden boards, each board in a panel design, the front board with the large oval armorial panel-stamp (72 x 55 mm) of Simon Cluver of Gedansk (ca. 1540-1598); the back board with 2 rolls showing Christian imagery. With 1 of 2 brass catchplates but further with only remnants of the fastenings.

Rotterdam City Library, Cat. Erasmus Collection, p. 22; USTC 635471 (4 copies); VD16, E2039 (same 4 copies); for owner's stamp on binding: Hulshoff Pol, The first century of Leiden University Library (1975), p. 414. Rare second(?) edition of the revised and expanded text of Erasmus's important and popular collection of more than two thousand aphorisms, apothegms and anecdotes, in the original Latin, first published by Froben at Basel in 1531 in six "libri" but finding its definitive form in his 1535 edition in eight "libri". Gymnich, with the present edition, appears to be the first after Froben to publish the revised 1535 text. The book is a collection of short quotations from a wide variety of sources, intended to be both educational and entertaining. With the large armorial owner's stamp of Simon Clüver (ca. 1540-1598), some of whose books went to Leiden University via his grand nephew, the historical geographer Philipp Clüver (1580-1622). Hulshoff Pol records this stamp on a binding dated 1564, but in the present binding it has been stamped over the existing decoration on the front board, so the binding itself may be older than the owner's stamp. With numerous small stains in the preliminaries, some mostly marginal water stains and a few small marginal worm holes, but otherwise in good condition and only slightly trimmed, retaining an occasional deckle. The owner's stamp has been impressed quite deeply and has therefore been well preserved, but the rest of the binding is worn, with some cuts, tears and gaps, and the surface of the spine flaking. One of the earliest editions of one of Erasmus's most popular and most entertaining works, in a near contemporary, blind-tooled binding.

The Sacred Scrolls of the Southern Ojibway

University of Toronto Press / Glenbow-Alberta Institute, 1975. x, 199 pp. Includes reference list, key to sources, extensive directory of birchbark scrolls and charts, and index. Oblong 7" x 10". Extensively illustrated with black and white photo reproductions, diagrams and scroll fascimiles. "Provides a previously unavailable chart of the emergence, development, and decline of a unique religious nexus known as the Midewewin, an untranslatable Ojibway word inadequately rendered in English as the 'Grand Medicine Society.' The Mide cult was introduced by a young visionary late in the eighteenth century, and later spread from Lake Superior as far as Lake Winnipeg. Examines over a hundred Mide scrolls and relates them to the mainstream of the oral tradition as preserved in Ojibway literature. In tracing the history of this fascinating cult, the author also provides perspectives on Ojibway identity and on the rise and fall of Ojibway civilization." - from dust jacket. Somewhat above-average wear and soiling to illustrated cream-coloured dust jacket, now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. Moderate wear to book. Binding tight. Prior owner's signature atop half-title page, otherwise contents clean and unmarked. A sound copy of this wonderful reference.
