Linear Programming: Invited paper presented before the Symposium on Numerical Methods July, 1948, Los Angeles, California.[National Bureau of Standards], 1948. First edition, pre-print.

Extremely rare mimeographed typescript of the paper (published three years later) in which Dantzig gave the first general description of linear programming and his famous 'simplex' method - declared as one of the most important algorithms of the 20th century. Dantzig was the recipient of the first Von Neumann Theory Prize "for his work on linear programming". When it was announced that the 1975 Nobel Prize in Economics would be awarded jointly to Kantorovich and Koopmans "for their contributions to the theory of optimum allocation of resources", the later wrote the first that he would deny the prize, as a protest towards the exclusion of Dantzig. Harvard economist Robert Dorfman, in his paper 'The Discovery of Linear Programming' (Annals of the History of Computing, vol. 6, pp. 283-295, 1984), clearly refers to this 1948 paper by Dantzig as the first in which he discovered the "basic strategy of the simplex method and all its variants, ... Thus Dantzig described the basic step in climbing the beanpole in the summer of 1948", citing the published version of this paper. The contents of this mimeographed typescript is identical to the 1951 publication [also offered her] and is with all probability the version handed out to the attendees of the symposium (National Bureau of Standards) in July 1948 - the first and last page are marked with the rubberstamp of statistician, and specialist in numerical methods, Dr. Clifford J. Maloney (who worked for different governmental institutions) and who would have been a very likely participant at this symposium. Included is, furthermore, one mimeographed typed sheet being an abstract of (a seemingly unpublished) paper by Dantzig, 'Application of the SEAC to Linear Programming', given before the Association for Computing Machinery, Sept. 7-9, 1950. In 1950 the first solution of the 'transport problem' on a computer was realized by coding the simplex algorithm for the National Bureau of Standards' SEAC digital computer under the auspice of the USAF's Project SCOOP. (See Gass & Assad: Timeline of Operations Research, p.72). The abstract ends with "In addition, the Bereau of Standards has agreed to develop an electronic computer capable of solving large-scale systems of linear inequalities more rapidly than computers currently under construction". This forthcoming computer, which Dantzig mentions, was the UNIVAC I that was installed at the Pentagon in the summer 1952. "The total influence of the Air Force's Project SCOOP is truly amazing. ... George Dantzig and Project SCOOP and the Air Force did not just contribute the linear programming model and the simplex method - what evolved from the Air Force's Project SCOOP changed the way business, industry, government and, especially, the military forces, plan, analyze and carry out their activities". (Peter Horner, Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences). WorldCat lists no copies of the separate 1948 paper.. Mimeographed typescript: 267 x 204 mm. 14 mimeographed, typed and stapled sheets, as issued, with the rubber stamps of 'Clifford J. Maloney'; lower left corder of the first shit bent, otherwise fine. Published version of the paper: Pp. 18-21 in 'Problems for the Numerical Analysis of the Future', issued by the National Bereau of Standards, June 1951. 4to: 260 x 200 mm, original printed wrappers; fine. Abstract typescript: 280 x 216 mm. 6 lines of title and 18 lines of abstract; fine

13 TLS, 1 ALS FROM LAURENCE DURRELL TO HENRY MILLER, 1975-1979

Sommiere, 1975 - 1979]: Durrell, 1975 Original Autographed Letters &. An important literary archive of 14 letters from Lawrence Durrell to Henry Miller written mainly during the mid to late 1970's, a period of maturity for both authors who had more than established credentials as major international literary celebrities with stellar reputations as innovators & trend-setters. These letters mostly from Sommières on Durrell's letterhead, sent to Miller in Pacific Palisades, CA. All with intimate, fascinating content. The mid 1930's period in Paris was highly creative for Miller, & during this time he also established a significant and influential network of authors circulating around the Villa Seurat. One author who became a lifelong friend was the young British author Lawrence Durrell [1912-1990]. Durrell's reading of Tropic Of Cancer unlocked the possibilities within his own innate writing skills. Durrell sought Miller out, became a member of the Villa Seurat circle. Through the decades, in person and in letter, he and Miller remained confidants. Miller's correspondence with Durrell was later published in two books. 13 TLS + 1 ALS - 1975 -1979. 1 on blue airmail paper signed, two unsigned letters on white bond, 2 page ALS from Brassai with Durrell's typed added forward/intro, 1 typed card [2 sided] with 8 page Gary Finder Ms, 9 signed letters on Durrell Letterhead, 3 holograph transmittal envelopes. Some Snippets: 1 - ONE PAGE TLS from Lawrence Durrell to Henry Miller on printed Sommières Letterhead, (November, 1976). "Cher Maitre, a quick line to tell you that last evening crazy Marcelle came to visit and to tell the cards for Ghislaine...She reminded me that when you were here she did your cards and described in great detail both operations". Durrell goes on to write that Marcelle said, "Mr. Miller has very successfully remounted the slope and is moving into good shape", but "He feels lonely which is bad for him...Here you (Lawrence Durrell) can be of assistance". Durrell goes on to say that he and Ghislaine are planning a trip to the United States and staying not too far from Miller's home in California, "I will take a cautious sounding to see if you are not too tired to let me say hello". Durrell continues with a paragraph about his impending marriage to Ghislaine and the fact that he has finished his 'devil' novel and closes with, "For the rest I hope to be hearing your laughter by Boxing Day / Love ". Signed in holograph "Larry" in orange. In fine condition . 2 - ONE PAGE TLS from Lawrence Durrell to Henry Miller on printed Sommières Letterhead, (April, 1976). "Dear Henry, after the success of my Greek film I am being asked if I will adapt a few things for French Television, among the notions I had was to ask you if you would grant me a six month option on your Mishima and The Smile AT The Foot Of The Ladder to see whether I could sell a short treatment to them.... naturally with such an "option ami" if any other more lucrative offer comes up our arrangement automatically falls to the ground but I need the option to get the thing officially listed by them. Send me a cable naming the titles or if there is any black just say NO OPTIONS. Every good thing and writing you soon Larry [in holograph] , PS They will pay well if it takes". 3 - ONE PAGE TLS from Lawrence Durrell to Henry Miller on printed Sommières Letterhead, (May, 1976). A chatty letter regarding the state of movie production in France, the rise of television for smaller budget options with the chance of more ingenuity & the possibility of making more serious things: "Dear Henry, Just a quick line to give you a brief notion about what I had in mind when asking you for your option-ami(e)... / To back this I have for some time been receiving approaches from French TV to offer them, if not original work, at least some treatments of existing work. . . " also Ghislaine's re-entry into the movie and television world and the prospects of short treatments of some of Miller's, Anais Nin's and Durrell's works for television. "Paris seems desperate for new ideas and all three of us are very popular there". Signed in holograph "Larry" Provenance: PBA. / The Personal Archive of Henry Miller Part I Fine Modern Literature Thursday, June 26, 1997.. Signed by Author. Original Autographed Letters & Documents.

Longing for Darkness. Kamante's Tales from Out of Africa

New York and London: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich,, 1975. With original photographs (January 1914–July 1931) and quotations from Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen). Collected by Peter Beard. Tall quarto. Original black boards, titles to spine in white, image of Blixen to upper board and of, tan endpapers. With the dust jacket. Illustrations throughout. An excellent copy lightly rubbed at the extremities of the boards and jacket. First edition, first printing. Inscribed by Peter Beard to author Lois Wyse with an elaborate ink drawing across both front endpapers, "To Lois with the rest of the picture coming soon! The best beach this side of Jamaica Inn! Warmest regs PB". Beard has drawn a humorous Hog Ranch scene complete with wild boars and a swimmer evading alligators as the sun sets against a distant mountain range. The American artist and photographer Beard was inspired to visit Africa, photograph its wild animals, and eventually buy a home there, after reading Blixen's Out of Africa. This book, compiled by Beard, combines Kamante's watercolours and his version of the events of Out of Africa (translated and handwritten by his sons) with Blixen's notes and previously unpublished photographs by Blixen, Beard, and others. A beautiful volume with a lovely, and unusually substantive, presentation illustration.
