Archive of Letters and Other Materials

1975. Very Good. A five inch stack of files containing about 110 letters from Guy to Jeffrey dated between 1965 and 1989 as well as photocopies of many of Jeffrey's letters to Guy over the same period. Also in the files are a few drafts of articles and other items. Condition of the letters and other material varies - some have a bit of staining or other wear. Some run on to several pages; a few are brief; several are cramped onto the space provided by the old single sheet folded aerogrammes. The archive also includes a file containing 55 WWII letters from Jeffrey Butler to his family back in South Africa. Almost all of the WWII letters are on aerogrammes, stamped "Passed by Censor." The file also includes a typed transcription of Jeffrey's WWII letters. Guy Butler was an important English-speaking South African poet and writer as well as a professor at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa. His brother Jeffrey eventually emigrated to the United States and spent the majority of his working life as a professor at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut but remained very much interested in South Africa and the town (Cradock) in which he grew up. Despite their Quaker background, both served with South African forces in World War II during which Jeffrey was severely wounded in Italy in 1944 and lost an arm. We don't think Jeffrey ever published an account of his WWII service. Guy described his service and his reaction to Jeff's injury in "Bursting World," the second of his three autobiographical works. Quite a bit of the correspondence collected here is dated in the mid-1970's when the brothers contemplated writing a joint memoir tentatively titled "Two Brothers." After sputtering along for some time, the project is rather firmly put to rest by Guy in a 1978 letter. An earlier cluster occurs in 1965 when their father dies and the estate has to be dealt with by Guy. The letters are generally chatty, quite friendly and sometimes lengthy. Guy shares news of his various writings and honors and often seeks his brother's opinion and suggestions on various matters.

Scrapbook and Photo album]: Balky Burros Hee Haw

Loveland, Colorado 1975 - Folio measuring 15" x 12". Green leatherette photo album with handmade cover with applied elements. A scrapbook for the years 1974 to 1975 for a Colorado camping group, the Balky Burro's, run by the National Campers & Hikers Association, now the Family Campers & RVers. Filled with various newspaper articles, camp newsletters, small souvenirs, and 193 color snap shot photographs ranging in size from 2.75" x 1.5" and 4" x 3". Moderate rubbing and some tiny chips on the front board else near fine. A scrapbook from September of 1974-75 made by Louise Sexauer for various Balky Burro's Camping functions around the Colorado area which were run by the National Campers & Hikers Association. Louise has several pages decorated for the events and photographs of the "Campvention." Some of the photos are of her and the other campers dressed up as clowns for entertainment during the festival. She lists some of the families on the trip with her and when describing her and her husband she employees a moderately amusing pun, "The only NCHA chapter in USA with a Sex-auer! The others have to be satisfied with a 'coffee-break!". She goes into detail about the people, places, and events that were had on the trip. One of these events was a "Hobo Party" filled with food, music, and friends dressed in homeless attire. Included is an article "Colorado-Balky Burros held a 'Happy Hobo Party' with the Pineconers as guests. Happy hour, hobo stew, and burro bingo were the highlights," written about the event for the 'Round the Campfire News. A few pages are dedicated to the group's celebration of Christmas with pictures of various campers sitting on Santa's lap with quotes of what they said, "Of course Santa, you old-wise man, I've been a good girl," featuring a little old lady with a big grin. While most events seem to be parties, there are also a couple of community cleanups that the campers organize. "Organized by the Balky Burros chapter, was to clean up Potters' field, a section of the cemetery where poor people or those without family are buried," written for the AG News Letter. Several pictures show the campers cleaning up the cemetery with little notes written, "It's hard work, but worth the effort!" and "A Labor of Love." They also go to work on a hiking trail, cleaning it up and making it more accessible to the public. A Junior Forest Ranger's badge is pinned onto this page, featuring Smokey the bear. The last pictures and pages are of the trip coming to an end and spending time with the families the Sexauer's had gotten so close with. The National Campers & Hikers Association (NCHA), which sponsored the Balky Burro's, was found in 1949 by Hank Ellsworth Nathan. It started at the Beaverkill Public campsite in New York near the Catskill Mountains. Since 1986 the office has been located in New York and is up and running to this day. The first "Campvention" was held in 1961 in Missouri with 272 families in attendance. Within 11 years the number of families increased to 7,842 but by 1998 due to decreasing interest and membership the Campvention now works on a regional rotation. An interesting look back on the social functions and friendships developed via RV culture during the 1970s, the vintage color snapshots and the DIY nature of the album reflect the time and the spirit of the era.

The Sacred Scrolls of the Southern Ojibway

University of Toronto Press / Glenbow-Alberta Institute, 1975, Hardcover, Book Condition: Good, Dust Jacket Condition: Good, First Edition. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall, x, 199 pp. Includes reference list, key to sources, extensive directory of birchbark scrolls and charts, and index. Oblong 7" x 10". Extensively illustrated with black and white photo reproductions, diagrams and scroll fascimiles. "Provides a previously unavailable chart of the emergence, development, and decline of a unique religious nexus known as the Midewewin, an untranslatable Ojibway word inadequately rendered in English as the 'Grand Medicine Society.' The Mide cult was introduced by a young visionary late in the eighteenth century, and later spread from Lake Superior as far as Lake Winnipeg. Examines over a hundred Mide scrolls and relates them to the mainstream of the oral tradition as preserved in Ojibway literature. In tracing the history of this fascinating cult, the author also provides perspectives on Ojibway identity and on the rise and fall of Ojibway civilization." - from dust jacket. Somewhat above-average wear and soiling to illustrated cream-coloured dust jacket, now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. Moderate wear to book. Binding tight. Prior owner's signature atop half-title page, otherwise contents clean and unmarked. A sound copy of this wonderful reference.

Boating on the Upper Colorado--A History of the Navigational Use of the Green, Colorado, and San Juan Rivers and Their Major Tributaries

1975. Softcover. A detailed navigational history of three rivers, contracted by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and the University of Utah, signed by both authors and containing a typed letter, signed by Madsen. Letter states that about 15 copies were printed, and 5 were sent to the U.S. Army in Sacramento. Report is unbound but includes red wrappers and has holes at spine for binding; signed by Crampton and Madsen on title page; all text and illustrations are typed on recto; t.l.s is from the desk of Steven Madsen to Dave Hellyer of Five Quail Books and is dated to 1995. Book is in very good condition with very light toning and wear to edges, light soiling to rear wrap and light toning around edges of text block; as mentioned in the typed letter, page 140 is Xeroxed being unintentionally left out of the report; t.l.s. has moderate creasing and evidence of erased pencil marginalia. As the prefatory note states, "the following pages bring together for the first time the outline of what is known about navigation on the major waterways of the Upper Colorado River Basin. We have carried the story from the earliest known beginnings up to the present year. The gleanings from written records, both printed and manuscript, were supplemented by a large number of interviews of persons knowledgeable in the history of the subject. In some instances the information presented is based almost wholly on interviews." This summation of the report tells of the magnitude of information included. Consisting of a historical introduction, court decisions relating to navigability, and a chronological history of navigation of the Green, Colorado and San Juan Rivers, along with 7 maps, 8 illustrations and a bibliography, this report is hugely significant in navigational and river history. Only four copies in OCLC as of August 2017. ; B&W Illustrations; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 164 pp .

An Archive of Hand-decorated Cards, Letters and Envelopes

1975 - A collection of approximately 120 large format, handmade and heavily hand-decorated postcards and letters, mostly with envelopes. Various dates from 1967-1975, all by Mrs. Brightman of Akron, Ohio to Ned Osthaus of Scranton, Pennsylvania. The content and accompanying art are highly eccentric, very entertaining, and occasionally slightly addled. Many are patriotic or moralistic in tone. Virtually all of the cards and letters are heavily painted, as are most of the envelopes. Several of the envelopes are made from busily patterned wrapping paper, some of which are additionally embellished, some not. Minor wear at the edges, else fine. The hand-illustrated correspondence displays a unique confluence of patriotic fervor, Biblical observance, political opinion, and boundless artistic energy. Many of the cards are in commemoration of holidays be they real (Christmas, St. Patrick's Day, Thanksgiving, Bastille Day, Passover, Columbus Day, Easter, July 4th) and obscure or imagined (Kent State Massacre Memorial Day, Mayflower Day, Law Day, Our Martyred United States of North American Mr. and Mrs. President's Day, St. Bartholomew's Massacre Day, Ten Commandments Day); others are dedicated to a theme: the Holy Grail, the Boer War, the Watergate Hearings, the Vietnam War, the Constitution, certain types of plants. In a July 4th card she explains her many names: "Note: During my early public career I was known as Margaret Quincy. During my later public career I was known as Margaret Stanton. Margaret Zenie was given to me at my birth and oddly, the Negroes in the South called me 'Ladybird.' I performed a High Swan Dive for them, especially, every Saturday Night whenever I played in the South." And in one card she explains her family lineage, after having read Profiles in Courage: "I was surprised to find Secretary of War Stanton still labeled 'a villain". in fact, he is my great grandfather. [his] wife. was an Allen. and she owned almost all of New York City, which my Grandfather Alexander Stanton inherited, and lost to the Astors."Our research indicates Brightman was born Margaret Zenie Stanton in Massachusetts in 1897 and died in 1978. She appears to have worked from an early age as a player for the pioneering and prolific American film studio Kalem Company that was based in New York and produced more than 1700 films. While performing at their summer facility in Jacksonville, Florida she met and married Thomas Qunicy, a high diver at the nearby Johnny J. Jones Circus. By 1912 she learned the high dive act and toured the South performing at various fairs and parks, which she references in one letter: "I was a professional athlete for 14 years." Later she married Ralph Weston Brightman and settled in Akron, Ohio. Her journey from high diver to housewife remains obscure though we suspect further investigation might yield more details. She expresses a deep interest in culture, and a recurrent and not so subtle dislike for the British, and especially the Royal Family. In a letter dated in 1974 she decries the state of literacy in the country: "It is not difficult for me to understand why you are having trouble trying to buy the book you wish to send me. For, I have long been troubled about our book stores, and libraries. about a week ago the 'To Tell the Truth' program on television had a man on their program who was from Great Britain, and who stated 'he owned the largest second hand book store in the world.' And this man stated that 'he had been buying millions upon millions of our books, classics included.' And to prove what this man had to say -- our largest second hand book store has vanished which means the British Queen Elizabeth II is plotting to reduce this nation of United States of North America to a nation of illiterates. Too, I have been discovering books missing from my own library, and books that have been replaced with important information deleted." In a St. Patrick's Day card she states: "Bless the American Irish for keeping us
