        [High School Yearbook]: 1975 Kalibarb: The Kalibre [bound with several issues of] The Barblet

      DeKalb High School DeKalb, IL: DeKalb High School. 1975. First. First and only edition. Screwbound printed yellow binder. Quarto. The wrapperbound yearbook, The Kalibre, bound with ten of twelve possible issues of the school newspaper, The Barblet (lacking issues seven and ten), for author Richard Powers's (here referred to mostly as Rick Powers) senior year of high school. Slight tears in the yellow cloth binder, some pages well-thumbed, student inscriptions in the yearbook, and a couple of leaves loose but sound, a very good example. Powers is pictured on at least three pages in the yearbook, twice in band pictures, and once in the National Honor Society, although curiously, he is not represented by a senior class picture. According to biographies of Powers he spent much of his high school time in Thailand, and only returned to DeKalb to finish high school, and was perhaps thus not present for the photo. He also appears at least three times in the issues of The Barblet, twice playing the cello, and once at a National Honor Society Assembly (we have by no means exhaustively searched the bound volume and may have missed other appearances). According to our research, Powers is the second most important graduate of the high school, after supermodel Cindy Crawford. .

        River-Crossing Pa Ndau

      The Hmong people of Laos are a tribal people in the highlands of Southeast Asia. They were recruited by the C.I.A. to fight against the communist Vietnamese and Pathet Lao in the 1960s, and they suffered the highest casualty rate of any group in the war. After the victories of the North Vietnamese and the Pathet Lao in 1975, the communist governments retaliated against the "traitors." Many Hmong were killed and others fled across the Mekong River into Thailand, seeking freedom, or at least refuge. For a period of time, the largest population of Hmong in the world, outside of Laos, existed in a Thailand refugee camp. A number resettled in the West, including tens of thousands in the U.S. Pa ndau is a traditional Hmong textile folk art -- "pa" is Hmong for flower, "ndau" for cloth. Decorated cloths can be as small as postage stamps or as large as quilts and can incorporate various kinds of stitcheries, as well a various images or patterns. The central image of a pa ndau generally tells a story. One thematic development in traditional Hmong pa ndau since the end of the Vietnam war was the "river-crossing" pa ndau, representing the flight from Laos across the Mekong River and into Thailand. Approximately 34" x 34", this embroidered pa ndau shows a traditional scene of village life in the highlands of Laos, with planting, cooking, and other traditional activities taking place, followed by -- as one approaches the foreground -- the arrival of armed Pathet Lao soldiers herding villagers at gunpoint. Still closer to the foreground, a number of villagers have escaped into the river, some on rafts, some in boats, some floating singly. On the other side of the river, they are greeted by Thai troops, and escorted to safety in Thai vehicles. The unnamed artist who created this pa ndau escaped from a Pathet Lao prison camp with her children, hiding out in the forest for several weeks until she was eventually recaptured; her captors knocked her teeth out with rifle butts after her recapture. She eventually escaped again and made it across the river, finally emigrating to the U.S. River-crossing pa ndau -- a modern expression of a traditional Hmong art-are extremely scarce, and this is a particularly dramatic example.         Tributes to Robert Mitchner, Director of the Indiana University Writer's Conference

      (1975). A collection of sixteen one-page tributes to Robert Mitchner, the founder of the Indiana University Writer's Conference. The tributes, in the form of text and sketches, are all on individual leaves, most measuring 10.75" x 14.5. All but three pages appear to have been removed from a stapled binding. Wear to the left margin of the large pages where they were disbound, one page dampstained, and some glue residue to the verso of the three smaller pages along with some wear, very good or better. The tributes to Mitchner, dating from his retirement in 1975, are by writers, artists, and instructors who attended the conference. They vary from simple notes and letters of thanks to poems and illustrations. Among the most notable contributions are an Autographed Note Signed by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., a Typed Letter Signed from Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tad Mosel, an Autographed Note Signed from Roger Zelazny, and a Typescript poem with illustrations from children's author and Newbery Medal winner Jean Lee Latham. This 1st printing (stated on copyright page) book's dustjacket had 3 issues: the 1st rumored to be only 25 copies priced at $8.95, all kept in-house by Doubleday and the one known to have come on the market commanded a price of around $25,000. This is the 2nd issue dustjacket - still very scarce because of the Father Cody mistake on the front flap (later corrected in the 3rd issue to Father Callahan) that was price clipped by Doubleday and a price of $7.95 printed beside the publisher clip. The book has the required (to be a real 1st printing) Q37 code at the lower end of the gutter of the last text page. The book is Near Fine. Straight, clean, tight, no binding spots or soiling, with just slight softening to the cloth at spine ends and a few very small, very faint spots to outer page edges near the back of the text block, and on the top of the front free end page there's a previous owner's name plus in different writing her place born and date and place died and date. The book is SIGNED by Stephen King on the title page, right below his publisher printed name - just his name with no inscription. A lovely example of King's 2nd book, and a 'really' nice Fine example of the fragile dustjacket (usually found chipped and tattered). Even the red part of the lettering on the spine isn't faded as you usually find it. Only things keeping it from being As New is an occasional skinny trace of white showing through the black at the front flap fold line, and a couple of very tiny professional edge repairs on the reverse side that show an also just a tiny trace of the black used in the color matching on that reverse side. A collector's copy. Made into a TV series, which is what really got King's career started. ; 8-7/16" x 5-3/4"; 439 pages; Signed by Author .

      London: Secker & Warburg. (1975). The first British edition of his second novel, winner of the National Book Award and one of the best novels to link the impact of the Vietnam war on American society in the Sixties to the dark side of that era -- the official corruption and the underside of the drug experiences of a generation. An unaccountably scarce edition. Reportedly 2500 copies were printed but it turns up very seldom, far less often than the British A Hall of Mirrors, which is reported to have had a first printing of only 1000 copies. Printed in the U.S. and with a similar binding to the U.S. edition, but with a completely different dust jacket design. This copy is inscribed by the author to his bibliographer, Ken Lopez, "with best wishes." Faint marks on foredges and endpages; near fine in a near fine dust jacket with some of the usual fading to the spine lettering. We've carried this edition only a handful of times over the years.         Linear Programming: Invited paper presented before the Symposium on Numerical Methods July, 1948, Los Angeles, California.[National Bureau of Standards], 1948. First edition, pre-print.

      Extremely rare mimeographed typescript of the paper (published three years later) in which Dantzig gave the first general description of linear programming and his famous 'simplex' method - declared as one of the most important algorithms of the 20th century. Dantzig was the recipient of the first Von Neumann Theory Prize "for his work on linear programming". When it was announced that the 1975 Nobel Prize in Economics would be awarded jointly to Kantorovich and Koopmans "for their contributions to the theory of optimum allocation of resources", the later wrote the first that he would deny the prize, as a protest towards the exclusion of Dantzig. Harvard economist Robert Dorfman, in his paper 'The Discovery of Linear Programming' (Annals of the History of Computing, vol. 6, pp. 283-295, 1984), clearly refers to this 1948 paper by Dantzig as the first in which he discovered the "basic strategy of the simplex method and all its variants, ... Thus Dantzig described the basic step in climbing the beanpole in the summer of 1948", citing the published version of this paper. The contents of this mimeographed typescript is identical to the 1951 publication [also offered her] and is with all probability the version handed out to the attendees of the symposium (National Bureau of Standards) in July 1948 - the first and last page are marked with the rubberstamp of statistician, and specialist in numerical methods, Dr. Clifford J. Maloney (who worked for different governmental institutions) and who would have been a very likely participant at this symposium. Included is, furthermore, one mimeographed typed sheet being an abstract of (a seemingly unpublished) paper by Dantzig, 'Application of the SEAC to Linear Programming', given before the Association for Computing Machinery, Sept. 7-9, 1950. In 1950 the first solution of the 'transport problem' on a computer was realized by coding the simplex algorithm for the National Bureau of Standards' SEAC digital computer under the auspice of the USAF's Project SCOOP. (See Gass & Assad: Timeline of Operations Research, p.72). The abstract ends with "In addition, the Bereau of Standards has agreed to develop an electronic computer capable of solving large-scale systems of linear inequalities more rapidly than computers currently under construction". This forthcoming computer, which Dantzig mentions, was the UNIVAC I that was installed at the Pentagon in the summer 1952. "The total influence of the Air Force's Project SCOOP is truly amazing. ... George Dantzig and Project SCOOP and the Air Force did not just contribute the linear programming model and the simplex method - what evolved from the Air Force's Project SCOOP changed the way business, industry, government and, especially, the military forces, plan, analyze and carry out their activities". An important literary archive of 14 letters from Lawrence Durrell to Henry Miller written mainly during the mid to late 1970's, a period of maturity for both authors who had more than established credentials as major international literary celebrities with stellar reputations as innovators & trend-setters. These letters mostly from Sommières on Durrell's letterhead, sent to Miller in Pacific Palisades, CA. All with intimate, fascinating content. The mid 1930's period in Paris was highly creative for Miller, & during this time he also established a significant and influential network of authors circulating around the Villa Seurat. One author who became a lifelong friend was the young British author Lawrence Durrell [1912-1990]. Durrell's reading of Tropic Of Cancer unlocked the possibilities within his own innate writing skills. Durrell sought Miller out, became a member of the Villa Seurat circle. Through the decades, in person and in letter, he and Miller remained confidants. Durrell goes on to say that he and Ghislaine are planning a trip to the United States and staying not too far from Miller's home in California, "I will take a cautious sounding to see if you are not too tired to let me say hello". Durrell continues with a paragraph about his impending marriage to Ghislaine and the fact that he has finished his 'devil' novel and closes with, "For the rest I hope to be hearing your laughter by Boxing Day / Love ". Warmest regs PB". Beard has drawn a humorous Hog Ranch scene complete with wild boars and a swimmer evading alligators as the sun sets against a distant mountain range. The American artist and photographer Beard was inspired to visit Africa, photograph its wild animals, and eventually buy a home there, after reading Blixen's Out of Africa. This book, compiled by Beard, combines Kamante's watercolours and his version of the events of Out of Africa (translated and handwritten by his sons) with Blixen's notes and previously unpublished photographs by Blixen, Beard, and others. A beautiful volume with a lovely, and unusually substantive, presentation illustration.
