        Animal Liberation

New York: Random House, 1975. First Edition. Octavo. Original cloth. Warmly inscribed by Singer on the title page. Small name on endpage, near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Australian moral philosopher Peter Singer is a frequent advocate of animal ethics, which he teaches on at Princeton University. Animal Liberation "galvanised a generation into action. Groups sprang up around the world, equipped with a new vocabulary, a new set of ethics and a new sense of mission...Singer's book is widely known as the bible of the animal liberation movement" (Independent on Sunday). It is "[a] reasoned plea for the humane treatment of animals that galvanised the animal-rights movement the way the Rachel Carson's Silent Spring drew activists to environmentalism" (New York Times). And it is "[i]mportant and responsible...Everyone ought to read it" (Richard Adams). It is "[p]robably the single most influential document in the history of recent movements concerned with animal welfare" (Guardian).

A Fine set of four original etchings by Gunter Grass, each SIGNED BY GUNTER GRASS, housed in a Near Fine marbled-gray stiff cardboard folio also SIGNED BY GUNTER GRASS on the title label, published in a Limited Edition of 70 copies, of which this is copy 69, together with the original custom cardboard mailing box. Each of the four etchings has been signed, dated, and numbered in charcoal by Gunter Grass, who also signed and numbered the title pastedown residing on the folio's front cover in blue ink. (One of the etchings is number 59 from a limitation of only 60.) Each Etching is loosely inserted into the folio and is there protected by a loosely inserted tissue guard (each in very good condition). The Folio measures approximately 30" X 21" and each etching is printed on a sheet measuring 19-3/4” X 25-1/2”. Each Etching is in Fine condition and is untitled. (Were we to give titles to the etchings, the titles would be: "Partially Eaten Peaches" (59/60, 1973), A Study of Three Fish (79/80, 1973), A Study of the Scorpion (79/80, 1973), and "Rescue from a Fish" (79/80, 1974). The Etching sheets are much larger in size that usually seen and the issues Limitation is much smaller than usually is seen. Gunter Grass won the 1999 Nobel Prize in Literature in recognition of his "frolicsome black fables [which] portray the forgotten face of history". The original mailing carton shows that the folio was sent to 25 Marktgasse Bern, Switzerland to the family of Alfred Scherz & Co., Bern, Switzerland, publishing house and rare booksellers (which ultimately sold all its assets to the Holtzbrinck Publishing Group in 1998).         Longing for Darkness. Kamante's Tales from Out of Africa. With original photographs (January 1914–July 1931) and quotations from Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen). Collected by Peter Beard.

New York and London: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1975 - Tall quarto. Original black boards, titles to spine in white, image of Blixen to upper board and of , tan endpapers. With the dust jacket. An excellent copy lightly rubbed at the extremities of the boards and jacket. Illustrations throughout. First edition, first printing. Inscribed by Peter Beard to author Lois Wyse with an elaborate ink drawing across both front endpapers, "To Lois with the rest of the picture coming soon! The best beach this side of Jamaica Inn! Warmest regs PB". Beard has drawn a humorous Hog Ranch scene complete with wild boars and a swimmer evading alligators as the sun sets against a distant mountain range. The American artist and photographer Beard was inspired to visit Africa, photograph its wild animals, and eventually buy a home there, after reading Blixen's Out of Africa. This book, compiled by Beard, combines Kamante's watercolours and his version of the events of Out of Africa (translated and handwritten by his sons) with Blixen's notes and previously unpublished photographs by Blixen, Beard, and others. A beautiful volume with a lovely, and unusually substantive, presentation illustration. [Attributes: First Edition]

        The Monkey Wrench Gang

New York: Lippincott, 1975. First edition. Hardcover. Hardcover. First edition. Fine in fine dust jacket. A fine, fresh copy of the author's master work about disrupting those who would tamper with the environment. An uncommonly nice copy of a book that often is thumbed, soiled or remainder marked. Signed and inscribed by Abbey on the front free endpaper Abbey. It is inscribed to Ed Lueders, longtime professor and chairman of the English Department at the University of Utah and director of the university's creative writing program. Lueders was instrumental in bringing Abbey in as the university's first writer-in-residence. An unusually meaningful association.
