        Flirt

[Pittsburgh]: [International Poetry Forum]. [1975]. A broadside poem, measuring approximately 9" x 12", reproducing the author's holograph and his signature. Approximately 500 copies printed for distribution at a reading, using paper of various sizes and colors. This copy is 8-3/4" x 11-3/4", light brown, and as such not noted in the De Bellis/Broomfield bibliography. Additionally, this copy is actually signed by Updike, below the facsimile signature, and dated 7/13/91. Tiny spots of foxing, near fine; now framed to 12-1/2" x 15-1/2". Much scarcer than its estimated print run would suggest, and extremely scarce signed. That this variant eluded the bibliographers, who were almost unbelievably thorough in tracking down the multitude of issues of Updike's enormous body of work, also suggests extreme scarcity. First Edition.

        8 1/2" X 11 1/2" ORIGINAL PEN AND INK PICTURE

1975., 1975. Art depicts two Indian boys riding on a horse in front of three Indian teepees with people going about their work and two automobiles parked to one side of a tent. The work is signed by Fellows with his familiar Cowboy Artists of America insignia just below his signature. "Born in Ponca City, Oklahoma, Fred Fellows lived his early years exposed to the 101 Ranch and the culture of the Otoe and Osage Native Americans. At age nine his family joined the tail-end of the Okie exodus that followed the dust bowl trail to California but each year Fred returned to Oklahoma where he spent summers with his grandparents in their art-filled home. His grandfather a celebrated civil industrial engineer in Ponca City would take his family frequently to nearby museums. Fred was awe struck by Bryant Bakers Pioneer Woman monument in Ponca City. Although he did not realize it then, Fred’s fate as a future artist had been cast. He had an active imagination and a God given talent for drawing." Fellows was elected into membership in the Cowboy Artists of America in 1968 and in 1997 was elected president of the Cowboy Artists of America. By 2003, he had presided over the organization twice. His paintings and sculptures have been featured in many magazines throughout the country, among them Arizona Highways, Western Horseman, Newsweek, and Southwest Art and Architecture Digest. He has won many awards for his artwork including several from the CAA including Gold Medal for Most Popular Work in 1976, Silver Medal for Sculpture in 1991-1995, and Best of Show in 1991. He was honored to have had a retrospective at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2002. This original black and white ink sketch is matted and protected by a transparent shrinkwrap film. Fine.

The New Reformers" [Original Photo-Collage of Burroughs and Gysin]

Geneve: Francoise Lagarde / Le Colloque de Tanger, 1975. First Edition. Fine. Original B&W silver gelatin print. 12” X 9.5”. Photographer's stamp to verso. One of 50 numbered copies. SIGNED by Burroughs and signed and date by Gysin to recto. Fine condition. Famous image of Burroughs and Gysin, a photo-collage of their heads atop two stone relief figures (one of whom is Martin Luther - the full relief can be seen on the rear jacket of THE THIRD MIND). It was utilized for the posters promoting Le Colloque de Tanger, a September 1975 conference held in Geneva celebrating the work of Burroughs and Gysin. Lagarde helped organize the event with Gerard-George Lemaire and produced a portfolio of photographs in conjunction. This photograph was separately issued and is more uncommon than perhaps even the limitation might suggest. As Shoaf describes: "Atticus Books Catalogue Eight notes 'Planned for publication but never released.' It is believed that most went to Richard Aaron [Am Here Books] but they apparently were never distributed" (p. 107). [Schottlaender F38].

The Structure and Function of Chromatin

Elsevier, New York and Amsterdam 1975 - 4to; pp. ix, 368. FRANCIS CRICK'S COPY, AND THE BASIS OF HIS LAST WORK ON DNA. This volume collects the papers from the Symposium on the Structure and Function of Chromatin, held at the Ciba Foundation, London, Apr. 3–5, 1974. Crick was to summarise the conference in one of his last papers on DNA, 'Chromatin structure and function. Future prospects' (1978), where he celebrates the 'big advance in our under standing of the three dimensional organization of chromosomes at the first level of coiling of the DNA', and speculates on the possibilities of sequencing, anticipating the potential as well as the difficulties of 'genomic' projects. This copy has Crick's distinctive signature to the inside-front cover, and a couple of discrete annotations to the text (p. 176 and inside-back cover). In light of the paper Crick published we can assume that this was a crucial working copy. Near-fine condition: internally fine throughout; binding pristine; dust-jacket slightly worn at extremities, spine-sunned and a little marked, but generally very good. It was around this time that Crick left genetics behind and moved into neuroscience; hence this volume comes shows Crick at the peak of this phase of his long career, fully in command of the DNA literature and commenting prophetically on work to come.         Homage to Michelangelo (Omaggio a Michelangelo)

Fondation Bruckmann Stiftung 1975 - On rare occasion, one encounters a portfolio that is not simply a series of illustrations, or works surrounding a central theme. It is a cross section that summarizes an entire time and place. In its totality, it represents a self-contained collection, rather than a portfolio. "Homage to Michelangelo" is such a work. The portfolio was created in 1975, and published by the Fondation Bruckmann Stiftung, Munich, in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Michelangelo. It contains 13 original, hand signed and numbered artworks (some are etchings and others are lithographs), in an edition of 200. Each work is contained within a paper folder, with text printed in Italian and artist's biography printed in English, French, and German. The portfolio measures 33.5 x 24.5 inches, and the illustrations measure (in the main) 22" x 30". The original graphics consist of works by: Horst Antes (born 1936), "Portrait Michelangelo" (cat.# Lutze 775 2A); Jorge Castillo (born 1933); Emilio Greco (1913-1995); Renato Guttoso (1912-1987); David Hockney (born 1937), "Homage to Michelangelo" (cat.# SAC 173); Jean Robert Ipousteguy (1920-2006); Giacomo Manzu (1908-1991); Marino Marini (1901-1980), "Omaggio a Michelangelo" (cat.# G.325); Andre Masson (1896-1987); Henry Moore (1898-1986), "Four Reclining Figures" (cat.# C. 333); Sir Eduardo Paolozzi (1924-2005); Fritz Wotruba (1907-1975); and Paul Wunderlich (1927-2010), (at # Riediger 506). The example on offer includes each original graphic in excellent condition. The original beige, linen covered portfolio case with green leather front panel shows wear i.e., scuffs and scratches however, it has maintained the contents in excellent condition. It is extremely rare to find this portfolio complete in that most examples were dispersed, with artworks sold separately. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
