        Signed Photograph

      - Undated. An 8" x 10" black-and-white glossy of Dylan, with Allen Ginsberg in the foreground, taken during the Rolling Thunder Revue tour in late 1975 or early 1976. Ginsberg was on the tour for most of the 1975 dates but seldom performed his readings or recitations; he did typically join Dylan and others for the finale of Dylan's set, a performance of Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land." Signed by Dylan. Signature in blue ink across the dark shadows on his face, not readily apparent. Fine. A nice memento of a legendary musical odyssey.

        Humboldt's Gift

New York: Viking, 1975. First edition. Octavo, orginal half cloth. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with some toning to the spine. Inscribed by the author: "To Karyl, with love I could never have done it without your patient help Saul." The recipient, Karyl Kylie typed the manuscript of this Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.Humboldt's Gift is a self-described "comic book about death," whose title character is modeled on the lyric poet Delmore Schwartz. Charlie Citrine, an intellectual, middle-aged author of award-winning biographies and plays, contemplates two significant figures and philosophies in his life: Von Humboldt Fleisher, a dead poet who had been his mentor, and Rinaldo Cantabile, a very-much-alive minor mafioso who has been the bane of Humboldt's existence. Humboldt had taught Charlie that art is powerful and that one should be true to one's creative spirit. Rinaldo, Charlie's self-appointed financial adviser, has always urged Charlie to use his art to turn a profit. At the novel's end, Charlie has managed to set his own course.

        TYPED LETTER, SIGNED

College Park, MD. 25 September 1975.. One page, quarto. Typed by a secretary, but signed in full by Porter, with two small ink corrections. Fine. To a correspondent in Mississippi: "...your little note and collection of copies of my poetry would make my day happy if I had nothing else. It is marvelous to be called a poet when I never expected to be anything but a prose writer and I must say that none of my poet friends have ever mentioned my poetry...if Rousseau could call himself a Sunday painter, I think I have the right to call myself a Sunday poet...I had the joy that only poetry can give you whether you write it yourself or read Yeats or John Crowe Ransom or Homer or Dante...As for being good, how would any poet know?... I have had my strange consolation, reconciliation with life in writing it in my times of deep loneliness, for which I blame nothing at all and no one...." Ca. 250 words. Accompanied by typed fair-copies of four poems by Porter ("Winter Burial," "November in Windham" and "Two Songs from Mexico"), on colored stiff card, each signed by Porter in full, the first two with added captions about places and dates of composition.

        Bunker Archéologie

Paris, Centre Georges Pompidou,, 1975. Square quarto. Original photographic stiff wrappers, titles to front cover in black, titles to spine in white. Minimal rubbing to edges, a lovely bright copy. First edition, first printing. Published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris for the Exhibition of Virilio's photographic studies of the bunkers around the Western and Northern coasts of France. Accompanied by a theoretical explanatory text this work represents an early statement of his "war model" of the growth of cities and of the development of human society itself. "… to say that the positive phenomenon of technology came in large part from the arsenal and war is…hard for people to accept." (quoted in Gane 'Paul Virilio's Bunker Theorizing' in Theory, Culture & Society. , Vol. XVI, No. 5-6, p.87) Irrespective of this "mythical" dimension it is nonetheless a superb visual record. Text in French.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1975. First Edition. First Edition. Warmly INSCRIBED by Gaddis in 1984 to Harper's Magazine and Saturday Review literary critic John Aldridge: "To John Aldridge / with great thanks and serious regard / William Gaddis / Ann Arbor / 1984." & & Though later considered one of the most important literary works of the twentieth century, Gaddis' debut novel "The Recognitions" was effectively lambasted upon publication. Only a few critics, including Aldridge and a young David Burnett, gave good notices. Aldridge's review was eventually published in his collection of essays, "In Search of Heresy" (McGraw-Hill, 1956). Gaddis took little notice of the lack of public interest in his first novel, and started work on his second, "JR," not published until 20 years later, again reviewed by Aldridge, and ultimately winning the National Book Award. & & Beginning in 1976 and throughout the 1980s, Gaddis and Aldridge maintained contact, and became friends.         Self Portrait Drawn by the Author

1975. A unique self-portrait drawn by Richard Yates, author of Revolutionary Road, Eleven Kinds of Loneliness and other novels. It is signed and dated by him in February, 1975. Yates drew the portrait for New York City bookseller Burt Britton (the Strand and Books, Inc.) who asked the famous and not so famous literary stars to draw pictures of themselves. Yates is pictured with hands in pocket and doleful look on his face. With the inscription: "For Burt./ Dick Yates/ 2/6/75." Without doubt a terrific one-of-a-kind item.
