        TYPED LETTER - SIGNED

Washington, DC, U.S.A. 1975 - MICHAEL COLLINS - Typed Letter Signed Typed letter thanking a gentleman for a recent letter that he sent. On Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum letterhead, measured 7" X 9" and is dated February 21, 1975. Condition: Normal mailing folds. Fine condition. "Dear Lt. Higbee: Thank you for your letter of January 25. Our Sextant was different from yours, and probably should have been called a telescope. It had 28 power magnification and a narrow (less than 1) field of view. Hence we could see objects a long way off provided we knew fairly precisely which way to look for them. Hope this explains it. With all best wishes, Sincerely, (Michael Collins) Michael Collins Director." As pilot on the 3-day Gemini X mission, launched July 18, 1966, Collins shared with command pilot John Young in the accomplishments of that record-setting flight. These accomplishments included a successful rendezvous and docking with a separately launched Agena target vehicle and, using the power of the Agena, maneuvering the Gemini spacecraft into another orbit for a rendezvous with a second, passive Agena. Collins' skillful performance in completing two periods of extravehicular activity included the recovery of a micrometeorite detection experiment from the passive Agena. Gemini X attained an apogee of approximately 475 statute miles and traveled a distance of 1,275,091 statute miles--after which splashdown occurred in the West Atlantic, 529 miles east of Cape Kennedy. The spacecraft landed 2.6 miles from the USS GUADALCANAL and became the second spacecraft in the Gemini program to land within eye and camera range of the prime recovery ship. Collins served as command module pilot on Apollo 11, July 16-24, 1969--the first lunar landing mission. He remained aboard the command module ,Columbia, on station in lunar orbit while Neil Armstrong, spacecraft commander, and Edwin Aldrin, lunar module pilot, descended to the lunar surface in their lunar module Eagle. Collins performed the final re-docking maneuvers following a successful lunar orbit rendezvous which was initiated by Armstrong and Aldrin from within the Eagle after their ascent from the lunar surface. Among the accomplishments of the Apollo 11 mission were collection of lunar surface samples for return to earth, deployment of lunar surface experiments, and an extensive evaluation of the life supporting extravehicular mobility unit worn by astronauts. Collins completed two space flights, logging 266 hours in space--of which 1 hour and 27 minutes was spent in EVA. He left NASA in January 1970, and is Director of the National Air & Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, D.C. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Archive includes (i) TWENTY-THREE TYPED LETTERS SIGNED and ONE TYPED NOTE SIGNED, each letter being in German and on Buchheim's stationary and typically signed by him either "L.-G. Buchheim" or "L.-G. B." -- with one letter being signed "Lothar-Günther Buchheim" (some letters are signed twice by Buchheim); (ii) TWO BUCHHEIM AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED, each in German; (iii) TWELVE TYPED LETTERS SIGNED FROM THE GERMAN PUBLISHER PIPER VERLAG ON PIPER VERLAG STATIONARY, each in German; (iv) an ORIGINAL CONTRACT COUNTERPART BETWEEN THE AMERICAN PUBLISHER ALFRED A. KNOPF AND PIPER VERLAG SIGNED BY EACH PARTY and dated August 20, 1973 for the publication of "Das Boot" in English translation with exclusive rights being granted in the United States, Mexico, The Philippine Republic, and non-exclusive rights granted worldwide except in the British Commonwealth, South Africa, and the Irish Republic. Attached is the check stub for payment by Knopf of a $31,500 Advance; (v) a copy of the signed contract dated November 22, 1976 between Knopf and Piper for publication in English of Buchheim's "U-Boat War" (in the same areas as specified for Knopf's publication of "The Boat", together with the check stub for payment by Knopf of a $10,000 Advance; (vi) an ORIGINAL COUNTERPART OF THE AGREEMENT OF KNOPF WITH BANTAM BOOKS FOR A PAPERBACK EDITION OF "U-BOAT WAR" with the ORIGINAL SIGNATURES of the representative of each Publisher, with multiple initialings in the margins; (vii) and undated AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED from Carol Janeway of Knopf to Joan Daves, Buchheim's American Literary Agent with a copy of an Buchheim letter to Janeway attached; (viii) Carol Janeway's business card on which is written an AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED to Joan Daves and attached to which is a copy of a letter from Janeway to Buchheim; (ix) an AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED FROM ROBERT GOTTLIEB of Knopf to Joan Daves attaching a copy of Knopf correspondence to the translator Denver Lindley; (x) ORIGINAL TYPED LETTER SIGNED from Carol Janeway at Knopf to Joan Daves stating that "The Boat" had been a "splendid success for Knopf and discussing a possible advance from Knopf in the amount of $100,000 or more for "U-Boat War", noting Piper Verlag's excitement about the coming book, and seeking a copy of the portion of the book written to date as well as a synopsis of the portion yet to be written; (xi) TWO TYPED NOTES SIGNED from Carol Lazare of Knopf to Joan Daves regarding "U-Boat War"; (xii) a small file on a proposed serial publication by Life Magazine of "U-Boat War" as part of Time Magazine's effort to resurrect the then-defunct "Life" Magazine and Buchheim's rejection of the proposal as inadequate; and (xiii) copies of other relevant items and correspondence. Lothar-Günther Buchheim was a German propaganda officer serving in Kriegsmarine (the German Navy) the during World War II acting as war correspondent and recounting his experiences on German minesweepers, destroyers, and submarines. In such capacity, Buchheim also made drawings and took photographs. He ultimately served on U-96, a submarine commanded by Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock who was a leading German submarine commander during the Battle of the Atlantic which lasted from 1939 until the Allies defeated Germany in 1945. Lehmann-Willenbrock came to great fame due to his success and the publicity thereof provided by Buchheim who was aboard U-96 during its sinking of several of the 24 ships sunk under Lehmann-Willenbrock's command. Several decades after the War, Buchheim wrote his most famous and most successful book, "Das Boot", a fictionalized autobiographical account of his time during the War. "Das Boot" provided the basis for the 1981 German film nominated for six Academy Awards. Nicknamed "Starnberg volcano", Buchheim was known for his temper, and both that temper and his corresponding temperament clearly show through in his letters. In them, he repeatedly complains about Knopf, his American publisher, and often about his American Agent, Joan Daves, peppering his letters with such phrases as "There is nothing worse for an author...", of a French translator "she is so miserable", for a telegram of the American efforts he "waited with fear and trembling", he describes himself as "extraordinarily stingy", complains constantly about a "lack of communication" from New York and states that it is driving him wild, describes American reviewers as idiots, others as imbeciles, declares himself to be annoyed, sour, and hanging "in the air" over the lack of information from Knopf, complains vehemently about being forwarded a hospital bill in the amount of $35 for a Proctoscopy he had while in New York -- arguing that it should have been covered by Knopf as part of his expenses for a meeting in New York, says his anger at Knopf "knows no limits at all", complains about the American translation of "Das Boot" states that the Hollywood folks trying to make a movie of the book must refer to the UK translation in order to understand the book. He seldom shows satisfaction, much less happiness. In response to one of his letters, Carol Janeway of Knopf begins her reply to him with "Dear Herr Buchheim, Peace! White Flag! Surrender!". All in all a remarkable and interesting Archive replete with Buchheim signatures and EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE as such.

[Archive]: A Collection of Six Vietnamese Silk Screen Posters

[No place]: Phong phu [?]. [circa 1975]. Six original silk screen posters. Each measures about 15.5" x 18.5". Each is printed in six colors vibrant colors: purple, burgundy red, orange, blue, green, and gold. A very few short tears at some edges, else fine. A suite of compelling images of young women in traditional informal dress, four of which depict a woman being courted by a young man, and two that depict a pair of young women working together outside: one in a rice paddy field and one at the ocean. Each poster has two lines of text. Our Vietnamese is rusty, but the two lines of text appear to be couplets from proverbial items of folk wisdom pertaining to the agonies or follies of budding love, or couplets from the erotic poetry of Ho Xuan Huong, a famous female Vietnamese poet from the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. In particular Huong's poem "Bailing Water" closely reflects the poster depicting two women on a rocky coast maneuvering a bail between them with ropes, that they are dipping into the water of a river as it flows into the ocean. A rare set of somewhat mildly suggestive charged propaganda posters. .
